Secular Songs 121 to 125

Song 121

Mutual need to survive in life often forces us to adjust with people with whom we cannot cope for long time.  Though we know the solution, still we cannot implement because of need and expectation in life.

121 Need and expectation

Nothing wrong with others

There is no mistake in them

As long as I

Superimpose my shortcomings on them

Unnecessary expectations

Murmuring without understanding

Unjustifiable demands

Illegitimate desires

Like this keeping

So many other commands

When I try to

Lord over others

What others can do?

They bewildered seeing my mistake

They resent in their heart

And wonder remaining silent

Still they put up with me

In order to fulfil their need

And they do their best

To meet my needs

This struggle will

Never come to an end

As long as need and expectation

Are always in life

Who should be changed?

We all know well, still

Unable to change

We somehow manage life

Song 122

After doing my regular reading of day, I thought how I am going to escape from this as I am often tossed by the views of others and my reflections view about it.  Several times I long to give up reading completely. But as I am reading books from my boyhood, I am not sure I can escape from this till the end of my life?  I read not merely to gather information.  I often reflect on the subject.  This compels me to record my views.  At the same time I cannot agree either with other’s view completely nor reject my reflections.  Till the end I have to live with this kind of situation in my life as I cannot give up reading completely.

122 I cannot escape

What is the use of reading many books?

What kind of conclusion can I arrive after thinking many things?

I analyzed few things by writing them

But I realized that nothing will help me to act

I read hundreds of books

I reflected about the subject in them

As each one share her thought in her own ways

None of them will come to help me

I don’t have any of my own personal opinion

I cannot accept others’ view completely

Still I search which one is true

By analyzing the opinion of everyone

Not accepting my opinion which is not there

I cannot reject other’s views completely

I am tossed in between

Somehow I try to get away from these two positions

Even if I escape is there any use in it?

When the wave again draws me back in it

Till I live on this earth I cannot stop reading

I cannot escape the waves which toss me often

Song 123

As I became an old man who went through various phases of life, I can say with much confidence that among all the stages of life, old age alone is the sweetest one.  Though there are several challenges related to physical limitations, we still compare the life of others who live a life with many activities rushing and pushing, we can sit back and relax watching all their activities with a smile.  At least I am enjoying my old age. So for me old age is the golden period in life.  Just relax and enjoy it.

123 Sweet old age

Old age is sweet indeed

Though we are crippled

And confined in a corner

Old age is sweet indeed

We need not to get up in hurry

And need not work with much haste

We need not run pillar to post

In everyday life

Getting up leisurely

Sitting and relaxing

Doing minimum work

We can live with satisfaction

We need not become upset

To Work hard to earn

Calculating gain and losses

Spending with much thrift

Rejoicing when we get

Having patience when we don’t get

Accepting whatever comes

We can spend our life

Whatever uproar we make

However we create big scenes

Though we long much

There is none to uphold us

Understanding this truth

Realizing what is happening (around us)

We need not lament

When we are deprived [our rights]

Understanding this well

Accepting this whole heartedly

If we live not murmuring

Old age is indeed sweet

Gurukulam, 2-6-15, 6.15 a.m.

Song 123

In the past the poets used to sing praising their patrons to get financial support.  But in this song I wrote this song appreciating the seva done by one of my shishyas and his family for the mandali and Gurukulam.  His dedication and commitment to our ideology impressed me. His entire family, including his parents stood with him in his new understanding and worshiping the Lord going away from his family tradition.  As we arranged a party for the family in the ashram, this morning I wrote this song appreciating their seva for us. This is not to glorify any individual or a family but to show how very few people coming from different backgrounds understood our need and aspiration and completely changed themselves to serve us according to our need.  So he merely represents several such individuals who empathize with our ideology. And I dedicate this song to all these bhaktas of the Lord.

I removed the personal names of him and his family members and used the meaning of their name by replacing their names.

123     Dharma, Seva and bhakti

Along with dharma, seva and bhakti

With a humility of self giving

Upholding dharma and living as a servant

Growing in bhakti live many more years

You have done seva joining so far with us

You have done many services for us

Wherever you go, living like this

Grow in bhakti by immersing in the Lord

Coming to Gurukulam as a family

Knowing all the needs; you have done seva

Wherever you go, live with satisfaction

And have a sweet and wonderful life

You got a wonderful wife with simplicity

You ruled our hearts with love as Chakravarthy

You got victory and peace as your daughters

You also saw joyful companions as your sons

Increasing many fold and seeing many more families (of your children)

Seeing your grandchildren and great grandchildren

Established in mukit and rejoicing in bhakti

Live with Muktesan a full life

16-6-15, Gurukulam, 4.00 p.m.

Song 124

As usual I find it difficult to translate this song in English.  It is about the way inspiration induces the mind to soar high with many imaginations to write poems where the words and theme will come automatically.

124 Poem balsams

 As thoughts come

Words will appear

As words appear

Heart will expand

As heart expands

Many visions will come

As many visions come

Many types of scenery will come (in mind)

As sceneries come

Imagination will continue

Then a theme will

Come automatically

Then words will come

And stand in line

As we began to write

It will inspire the mind

The inspired mind will

See things properly

Then boarding on

The chariot of dream

Joining the horse

Of imaginations

As we drive them

With the whip of mind

The heart will

Run in the path of poem

Song 125

There are very few contemporary Indian leaders who earned the respect of all the Indians in their public life.  And Baba Kalam remained one such outstanding personality.  It is a blessed opportunity for me that I lived when he lived and witnessed his life.  He is a versatile person.  Apart from being a leading scientist and honoured the post of President of India, he wrote several books, and wrote poems.  He liked Carnatic music very much and can also play veena.  Rarely can we find a person who has all different kinds of talents.  When we heard about his sudden demise till doing his favourable service of teaching, the whole India was in shock. As I could not sleep for a long time as I was thinking about him I wrote this song as a tribute for him.

After Mahatma Gandhiji, the one INDIAN I respect is Baba Kalam.  Though others address him as Dr. Kalam, I prefer to call him Baba Kalam. He deserves to be addressed this way as he epitomized his own jnana and karma in his bhakti to the nation with a spirit of a sannyasi. Thankfully, he never remained a politician, but handled politicians very tactically —particularly in the episode of Sonia’s attempt to become the PM.

Dr. Pranap Roy (of NDTV) was interviewing Baba Kalam once while he was addressing the students at Rashtrabati Bhavan. He asked him, “Should the President be a politician or a non-politician?” Baba Kalam wisely answered, “This is a political question.”

Wherever his mortal body will be put to rest, the Presidency of Indian will always be divided as before Baba Kalam and after Baba Kalam. To honor his contribution to the nation, I wish that his statue should be put in front of the Rashtrabati Bhavan, as it will dignify that building permanently.

He lived a noble life and ended with a noble death — that too while doing his dharma of INSPIRING THE YOUTHS.

125 Light House (A tribute to Kalam Baba)

You taught to have a vision/dream

And toil for it with full dedication

You ask us to soar with “Wings of Fire”1

And advised us to live for others

You are like a pearl which is thrown (by wave) on the seashore2

And cultured (to shine) in the school of life

And you soared to the sky in the Rocket3

You established a noble glory.

In order to become a Super Power

You created a powerful weapon4

To make progress with our own strength

You gave so many super plans for the country.5

To attain glory in future for India

You make us to see many dreams

Though you attained so many glories

Yet you lived a simple life.

You taught the youth

That the Future is in their hands

And to make progress with dignity

You gave so many lectures to them.

Though your mortal body might be gone in the flood of time

Remaining as the Light House known as ‘Kalam’

By showing light by transcending so many generation

You will rule ever as an uncrowned King of us.

1. The book which he wrote

2. He born in Rameshwaram

3. He created the first Sat light launching plan

4. He created Atomic power

5. After the Pokaran atomic explosion, though sanction was imposed on India by America and other countries, to overcome all such impediments, he planned for the development of a cryogenic motor to launch several sat lights and we succeeded in it.
