Secular Songs 131 to 135

Poem 131

Generally I am fortunate to have only good books to read. But sometimes I read a few books which are beyond my capacity to understand both the subject and language.  But once I start, unable to give up reading, somehow I will manage to complete the reading.  But a few books I give up after reading a few pages.  I won’t entirely blame the authors, but not everyone is a good writer (including me) and often I feel sorry for myself as I cannot give up this habit of reading.

131. Poor one

What they want to communicate

What they want to teach

Writing something

Why are they confusing so much?

Using so many unnecessary words

Having a thought that goes beyond understanding

They write something

As their mind leads

Saying that they are writing in a new angle

By give new kinds of explanations

Unable to complete once started to write,

They tell so many things without continuity

As long as there are publishers to publish

As long as there are someone to buy them

Giving something in writing

They make a good living

But in this I am the pitiable one

Unable to stop reading (books)

Unable to understand what I read

I become a slave to this habit (of reading)

Mathigiri, 30-9-15, 11.30 p.m.

Poem 132

There is a difference between urgency and haste. But anxiety about the future always makes us live in haste.  This makes us lose what we already gained and unable to get what we long for.  This makes us behave like the dog lying on hey. Neither can it eat it nor allow others to take to feed the cattle.

132 Some kind of haste

Each one has so many works to do

In this busy world many are the troubles

There is no time for anyone

To sit and think patiently

Each one gets up with much haste

Longing by seeking something

When it slips away from the hand

Then who is responsible for that

Keeping so many evasive longings

Failing to preserve what already achieved

They are troubled too much

Unable to retain what they gained with the anxiety about the future

Unable to struggle all alone

Unable to take the help from others

We become like the dog lying on the hay

Not allowing others to use which it cannot eat

I shared what I thought about it

Because I am also one among them

Unable to run further

I recorded this by lamenting within me

Mathigiri, 21-10-2015, 2.55 p.m.

As usual I got up by 4.00 and couldn’t sleep. So after my regular tea and reading of my scriptural portions, when I began to keep quiet and meditate, my thoughts began to wander.  As usual it jumped from one subject to another without any meaning and purpose.  Then I thought about the formula: a small thought leads to imagination; imagination leads to longing; longing leads to desire; desire leads to conviction; and conviction leads to action which we try to justify after doing it. And we are caught up in this vicious cycle again.  However we analyze there is no way to escape from this.  However, those who can change the longing as an effort and troubles as strength by keeping the thoughts under control can make this life meaningful. But there are very few who can achieve this. But many have to swim along the current to survive.  Whereas few swim against the current to become successful to understand the meaning and purpose of this life.

133 Meaningful life

Many are the thoughts

Many are the longings

Many are the troubles in this world

Yet we have life too amidst all these!

Thoughts themselves become a burden

Longings become the very breath

Troubles also become habitual

Yet the desire also increased.

Though I was troubled because of the longings

And have fear about the troubles

I thought about this many times

Yet I cannot understand the meaning of life (amidst this)

Every day I analysed them

I thoroughly search the beginning, middle and the end

However I tried I cannot understand

Yet I didn’t give up.

Can I live if I began to think (and analyse)?

Can I press forward because of the longing (alone?)

Can I have fear about the troubles?

Or is it possible to unload my burden on others?

If we can keep the thoughts under our control

And if we can make the longing as an effort

And if we change the troubles as our strength

Then life on this earth too will become a meaningful one.

Mathigiri, 9-11-15, 5.30

Song 134

After my regular reading, as I didn’t eat my dinner properly, I made some hot milk to drink. When I was about to drink, I thought of continuing my reading so as not to waste that time while drinking the milk.  But I said to myself, ‘take time to think and reflection’.  This I said in Tamil and as I was again and again thinking the same sentence, after having my milk I wrote this poem. I know that I am not only a workaholic but also a tasked person. When I do one thing, in order to do another thing, I will do both of them side by side.  Several times I have noticed that I am doing three or four things at the same time.  There are both advantages and disadvantages. However, I find it difficult to change this habit.  Anyhow, at night, again doing two things together—drinking milk and thinking about ‘thinking’, I wrote this poem.

134. Try to accomplish something

We need to think for few seconds

And evolve what we have done

If we do without having any plan

We need to calculate the consequence for it

Each day will flee from life

But we need to do one thing usefully

We need to safeguard ourselves

Not merely living to increase the flesh in the body

Whether we remain ideal or wander

Each day will go away in life

But in this we need to think

What are we doing and why are we living?

Though we attained the noble status as human

Yet not losing it because of our foolishness

As per the status as human beings

We need to complete our life living accordingly

For that we need to take time to ‘think’

And need to evolve our works in systematic manner

Instead of passing the life ‘somehow’

We need to strive to accomplish something each day.

Mathigiri, 26-11-15, 11.30 pm.

Song 135

As my reading several times confuses me than giving any clarity on a particular subject, I realize the truth that ‘too much reading is really a strain to our mind’.  Particularly when some first frame a thesis and then try to present the facts twisting and turning them to suit their thesis finally ends up in contradiction.  Over-systemization and trying to homogenize contradicting facts won’t help anyone. On the other hand, accepting the contradiction and trying to explain them at best, at the same time not compromising with personal conviction and open for correction is the best solution that I find to overcome this dilemma.

135 True writing

Whose statement I should accept

Unless it is clear to me

How much I can argue (with them)

Unless their views are clear to me?

By reading too much I become barren

I become confused by thinking so many things

And I searched to find out the truth

But till the end I cannot find it out.

First framing a thesis and forming an ideology

And doing research superficially for that

Then collecting information that will serve for that purpose

And presenting it as ‘writing’ is really a thamasha

Accepting the contradiction completely

And try to analyse them as much as possible

And forming a theme keeping a balance

And presenting it properly is really true writing.
