BT Songs 146 to 150

146.  Good Marga

Bhakti alone compatible for Mukti

And it is within our strength to practice.

We need not go to the forest to do tapas (austerity)

We need not wander the land (pilgrimage) to earn merit

We need not learn scriptures seeking wisdom

It is enough for us to approach the feet of the Lord

What a blessed thing is to live as a bhakta

Bowing at His feet is the greatest tapas for us

Worshipping Him wholeheartedly is the only great merit for us

Is there any other refuge other than the feet of the Lord?

He will safeguard us by becoming mother and father

He will be with us by becoming (elder) brother and friend

He will uphold our hand with real love

He will give His company till the end

Only those who surrendered alone know this

There is no other way except saranagati (taking refuge at His feet)

We who experienced proclaim this with clear understanding

Lord Himself will show the end of the bhakti

Come let us hail Him and bless the charitable One

Let us know the path of Mukti in this world

He who sought us will never reject us

We tell this as we know this truth.

Gurukulam, 27-09-2012. 9.05 am.

This song in a gist declares my bhakti theology.  When I was deeply meditating on all the beautiful aspects of bhakti this morning, I wrote this song.

147. Oh grace which is the bliss

Grace which is the bliss

The divine’s greatest Light

The one which removes delusion

This is the greatness of grace

In this life

Surrounded by darkness

Showing the path

The pure Light

The divine wisdom

Which gives a clear stand?

In the confused condition

Due to a disturbed heart

The God who takes care

By becoming the answer

When unanswerable questions

Come while we live

Anand, peace

True way with grace

Eternal Mukti

Are the gifts bestowed by you?

I will praise you

I will uplift your fame

I will bow with love

Seeking the feet of the Lord every day.

He will be with me

He will walk with me

Saving me till the end

He will merge me with Him.

Gurukulam 09-10-2012.

For me Muktinath came as the answer and not with an answer.  Of course, my question was, ‘why I cannot live a perfect life even for a single day’.  And though I got the answer from Romans 7:15ff, yet for all the questions in life finally I saw that our Lord is the answer, though it is expressed through His Mahavakyas, teachings or through His disciples and other bhaktas. Of course, all the answers were not explicit or expressed in text, but whichever form it came, finally the Lord became the embodiment of that answer to me.

148. I took refuge unto you

I don’t find any other refuge other than your feet

I never learnt the code of true marga (path)

I never had fullness in life without shortcomings

The mistakes that I do are countless

I never had joy without trouble

I never had happiness without worries

I never had any clear thinking without confusion

I never have good gunas without blemish

I never do anything without having selfish motive

I never accepted any condition other than pleasure

How much more should I tell

Who knows me well?

If you reject me, where else can I go?

‘Show mercy’ all that I can cry

I will never leave your feet

Either you beat me or hug me I made it clear to you

You came to save the sinner

You redeemed me by sacrificing yourself

Therefore, I come unto you again

I become a refuge unto you.

Gurukulam 19-10-2012,

Bhakti knows nothing other than the Lord Himself.  Though sometimes I had the sense of rejection by Him, yet the assurance that He cannot reject what belongs to Him is the encouragement that I have in my bhakti.

149.  The Darshan of the feet

Give me the darshan

And you come to this lonely one everyday

I want to have the darshan of your feet

I want to mingle with the bhaktas

I want to dance joyful singing

Oh Lord I want to approach your feet

The divine feet without any comparison

The pure feet which saved us?

To save the world it got pierced by nails

The feet which hanged on the tree

There is nothing equal to your feet

Oh God your feet are the final resort for redemption

Knowing this I come unto your feet

Give me protection under its feet

18-11-2012. Gurukulam

This song is reminiscent of the famous song ‘Padam ondre vendum’ in Tamil by Sastriyar (I think).  As we have the feet of the Lord as the emblem in the dhyana mandapam windows, as I saw it, I remembered that song by Sastriyar and wrote this song.

Having the feet as the refuge and having it on one’s head portrays the dasa bhava (salve attitude) in bhakti tradition (known as ‘thiruvadi deekshai’).  When Bharata received the ‘paduka’ of Rama he carried them on his head back to Ajodhya to rule the Kingdom.  In several ashrams the ‘padukas’ which the departed Swamiji used are kept in the ‘brindavan’ (the graveyard) to represent his presence to which all the pujas are performed.  Though Mukti Veda never glorifies any particular part of the Lord as divine one more than others, yet our bhakti tradition helps us to express our bhakti by depicting the feet of the Lord as the ‘earthly’ abode for a bhakta.  I never hesitate to use this symbolism in celebrating my bhakti in the Lord.

 150. Grace is enough

Your grace is enough for me

To emancipate what else I require in this world?

The love which you have for the undeserving

The nobleness which you show to the mean one

The concern that you show to the humble ones

It is called as Grace as per the verdict of the world

We learnt it as came seeking after us

We realized as it was given to us continuously

This unchanging your nobleness

Is grace which is your nature?

You defined what love is

You put yourself as its end (limit)

You demonstrated it by hanging on the cross

By this you even dignified Grace.

21-11-2012, Gurukulam

When I wrote this song and completed the last stanza I couldn’t even proceed further.  I stopped stunned by realizing how our Lord even gave dignity, nobleness, glory even to the grace itself.

Though comparing the Incarnation of the Lord with the Avatara of Vishnu is not correct one, yet in general the reason behind all the Avatars of Vishnu is to save the Devas from the Rakshasas as documented by Pazha Karuppaiya in his Tamil book: Yellaihal neetha Rama kadai [Rama’s story which crossed all (human) boundaries].  There he says that unless Kalki avatara takes places which promised to save the people, it will become a mistake and humans as a category to be saved by avatara will be left out.  (p. 206). @ Of course, staunch Vaishnavites won’t agree with Karuppaiya. But what he says has a point to ponder.

But Mukti Veda clearly depicts that the Incarnation is to redeem the entire creation through the redemption of human beings first.  And in it, grace stands as the climax. Of course, Vaishnavite bhakti tradition clearly sings the glory of grace; the forgiveness of sin by Rama and redemption of people through him.  But the core concept of avatara is not primarily to save the people but only gods (devas).

Notes.

@Rama took avatara to save the devas from the Rakshasas.  Now this avatara (Kalki) must take place to save people. Now those who are going to be saved are not devas but people (in Kalki avatara).

Vishnu took avatar to save devas, Veda and yajnas.  But he never took avatara to save simple people.  Therefore, if his Kalki avatara does not take place, the purpose of the avatar will be lost.  The human as a category to be saved will be left out from the purpose of avatara. — Yellaihal neetha Rama kadai (Rama story which crossed all the boundaries), Coimbatore, Vijaya Press, 2008, p. 206 [my translation]
