Secular Songs 156 to 160

156 A Race

They continue to seek and tell what they know

But unable to get what they seek and not understanding what they know

Run the race not giving up

And not accepting the defeat, they continue to run

They search the whole day and run seeking after it

And listen to the good counsel of others

Though they listen to that good counsel they didn’t see the good they seek

And again listen what others say

They become tired and become sad

And try to live the life each day

Though they live, unable to know the aim of life

They are confused and frustrated.

They lament and boil inside

And become mad thinking what is gone

And become anxious thinking many things

And become very sad of that experience

Nothing will help whatever they do

Wherever they search they won’t get the answer

(because) as they again run seeking

The answer which they won’t get for the question which does not even exist

6-4-16/7-4-16, 12.30 am, Mathigiri

Back in 1992 I wrote a song in Tamil in which I said that the mystery of life is that we ask several questions in life where the question itself becomes the answer.  And in other times, however we try, we cannot find the answer that we want to know. But sometimes the paradox is that we try to seek to get the answer which is not existing or not knowing what the very question itself is the answer.  This poem may look philosophical to some and make no sense to others.  But this is the paradox of (my) mind as I several times sit and think about the paradox of life, which I am unable to communicate, as I myself was not clear what I think or understood.  But I have to live this kind of mind and some of you have to read it.  And blessed is the one who never read such poems or ignore it—as they have either the answer or know the question.  Though I tried my best, trying after several drafts of translation, finally I gave up as I find it difficult to convey what I have written in Tamil in English.

Song 157

157 Burden

Why we took this (human) birth

Why we go through several sufferings in it

We never came desiring it

And we will not be taken when we asked for

Though we grew up

Seeing good each day and time

Many troubles coming in amidst them

Give pain along with much suffering

What to say about the nature of Time

What to tell about the many changes that we have seen

Each age went in its own way

But old age alone become a burden

So many people carried us throughout life

And done many things for us in proper time

But when the old age has come

There is none to carry our burden

In childhood parents carried us

In youth one carried himself

Before old age each one carried the other

But in old age alone we become burden

Becoming a burden to the earth and wasting the time

And lamenting by staying alone

Losing everything and longing alone

We will wait for the arrival of Yama

Mathigiri, 10-4-16, 11.45 pm.

Another song lamenting about loneliness in old age.  Sorry for the melancholic note again, but this is part of life.

Song 158

158 Where to escape

Where to escape leaving everything

And how to lament thinking about all the strife

Standing alone at the centre

Crushed by all side by many turmoil

What is the point of ‘who said what?’

And which one’s statement we should accept

Though we talk about ‘public interest’

There will be selfishness in that too

Many thousands get defeated after struggling a lot

And millions are there who do not understand this

I am one among them

And I cannot find the way to escape

If we go at the back it will kick us

And if we come to the front it will bite us@

Somehow, we need to load the burden

And by some means need to take the luggage to the destiny

Unable to drag alone

And unable to call others to help

Like a cart which get stranded on the way

Works will remain incomplete

What to do in this situation
somehow the life is going on

We should push as much as possible

And when it goes beyond us, we should keep away from it.

@–this is a proverb about donkeys.  When trying to load it will try to avoid it by kicking and biting.

27-4-16, Mathigiri, 5.45 pm.

As I am reading the Complete Work of Gahdhiji (vol. 16), the following words which he addressed to the Ashram Inmates (at Sabarmati) reflected such feelings many of us often experience.  But the immediate words that came to my mind were ‘Where else to run leaving everything? Then stopping reading, I wrote this song based on my reflection and also having similar experience:

231. ADDRESS TO ASHRAM INMATES 2

March 18, 1918

Every day I discover so much hypocrisy in the world that many times I feel I just cannot go on being here. At Phoenix, I often told you that, if one day you did not find me in your midst, you should not be surprised. If this feeling comes over me, I will go where you will never be able to seek me out. In that hour, do not feel bewildered, but go on with the tasks on hand as if I were with you all the time. [From Gujarati] Mahadevbhaini Diary, Vol. IV, –CWG, vol. 16, p. 346

Song 159

159 We are waiting

We become prisoner to the circumstance

And lost the communication between the words and deeds

What is the point of having all that we need?

But the TRUTH is that there is no satisfaction in anything

Those who don’t have worry about what is missing

And everything become a worry for those who have everything

But the struggle is the same for both

What is the alternative to this?

We don’t have the heart to run away giving up everything

And we don’t have strength to run after things longing for them

The green in the distance look very cool

But when we go near it burns like fire

The neighbour’s garden always looks very beautiful

But if we enter into it there is some snare

We don’t have satisfaction with what we have on hand

And we never get what we are longing for

We repeatedly get cheated by saying with longing

“That grape is very savour”
Yet we don’t want to leave it and go

And there is no means even to go away from it.

We go round and round (under the creeper)

And look unto it with longing

The birds come and pick up the fruits

And those un-ripened ones which fall is savour and bitter

Thinking that somehow we might get one

We wait with great desire for it

Though the fruit season is gone

We wait for the next season to come

5-5-16, Bangaluru, 10.30 pm.

As I came to stay with one family, (on May 5th 2016) to have quiet time, after he and his son retired to bed, I silently sat by the bay window looking out at the sky.  I sat there for some time.  Though I have a better place than this at the ashram, as I want to avoid responsibility for at least for a few days, I came here to spend a week. But merely changing the place or situation is not going to guarantee what we are looking for.  Wherever we go our shadow will follow us. Above all, the neighbour’s garden always looks beautiful and green. But we are like the fox which jumped several times to get the fruit and finally gave it up by despising it that it will be very savory.  But our condition is worse than that.  Unable to get the fruit at the same time and not wanting to leave the tree we continue to sit under it thinking that one day we will get at least one fruit which will fall on our hand after ripping naturally.

Song 160

160 unceasing race

We seek comforts each day

For that we too run pillar to post

But what is ‘comfort’ is not very clear

And mind too cannot comprehend it neatly.

Thinking the physical needs one by one

And constantly thinking each one that we need

Then we make decision clearly and plan accordingly

And accomplish our acts by consulting others

The race won’t end until we get it

But we won’t get peace of mind once we received it

If someone comes as stumbling blog

None can bear our wrath

Irritation comes when desire is curtailed

Once get irritated buddhi become confused

Once buddhi get confused conflict will arise

Once conflict arise the work get spoiled

Whatever might be the end what does it matter?

How much hurled comes what that matter

Until we get what we desired

Will we accept others advice?

Are we running within a circle?

Do we seek without having any discerning spirit?

The goal is not visible (as we go round and round)

Where we began that too is not clear (as we run within the circle)

Yet we do not stop running the race

The goal is not visible too

As I too run like others

My run within the circle never comes to an end.

6-5-16, Bangalore, 5.30 am.

I never like to go for shopping.  Because if I go for shopping finally, I will end up buying so many things which are not necessary for me buy thinking that it will be useful for them.  As I saw the milk cooker at my hosts’ house, I want to buy one for the ashram, as boiling more than 5 litters of milk requesting someone to keep an eye on it was a constant problem. I thought these kinds of milk-cooker which we once used are not available now. But when I saw in his kitchen, I enquired about it and he said it is available even now and he ordered big one (five litters) for the ashram and small one (2 litters) for my personal use.  But after this I began to think the way I get trapped in such material needs from which I cannot escape and wrote this song reflecting my own situation.  When I wrote this song, what Gita says about this came to my mind:

dhyaayato visayaan pumsah sangas tesuupajaayate|

sangaat samjaayate kaamah kaamaat krodho’bhijaayate}||

krodhaad bhavati sammohah sammohaat smrtivibhramah|

smrti bbramsaad buddhinaaso buddhinaasaat pranasyati||—2:62-63

Brooding on the objects of senses, a man develops attachment for them; from attachment springs up desire; from desire (unfulfilled) ensues anger. From anger arises delusion, from delusion; confusion of memory; from confusion of memory, loss of reason; and from loss of reason (discrimination), he goes to complete ruin.—Swami Ramsukhdas, Sadhaka Sanjivani, Srimadbhagavadgita, Gorakhpur, Gita Press, first ed. Year not mentioned, vol. 1, p. 140-41
