Song 176

176 None has renounced
There is none who has (really) renounced
As we need something to renounce
Once nothing belongs to us
Which one to give up to become a renouncer?
We born without cloth on earth
At the end (after our burial) that too will disappear
In the meantime, what all we enjoy are
Collected and provided to us by others
The body is also not ours
And the pleasures which we enjoy are not permanent
And it is impossible to enjoy any pleasure
Independently on this earth^
(^so that we need the consent of others even to give up pleasure)
Finally, when we renounce all these things
We never do it secretly
There is no point of renouncing
After declaring what all the things that we have renounced
Those who have courage even to renounce renunciation
Alone know the truth about renunciation
Once they understand this truth
Will realize that actually there is none who has renounced (anything)

Song 177
177 We should learn the lesson
This too is a funny thing
And a routine one
If we thinking about it
It is nothing but habitual one
By counting all the shortcomings
And adding further to them
By searching diligently
How many complaints they make
Even small issues become major one
If we raise our voice that too become an offence
If we try to avoid them
That also becomes another point of contention
How much we do, it is not enough for them
However, we toil they are not satisfied
However, we bow as they continue to hit on the head
Their anger never subsides
But this becomes a habitual one for them
Therefore, our heart too is become immune to it
What else they too can do
Their habit itself became a routine
We should also learn a lesson from this
We should never do like this (in future)
Even we get trapped in similar situation
We should be careful enough not to imitate them.
Mathigiri, 2.50 pm. 15-6-16
Those who are not satisfied with our seva will always find fault even on small matters which are not at all important. By mistake we could make such small mistakes as we too are human beings. Instead of counting the major things that we do, they will magnify only those secondary issues. I am also not exempted from this. By sharing even this thought and song, I do the same—only highlighting others’ secondary mistakes forgetting their best co-operation on core issues.
Song 178

178 Twist/knots
The meaning of the life
Will become clear as the days go
Once it become clear
The riddle about life will also be solved
Taking each strand separately
Joining them together
Once you formed a thread
Don’t try to unwind the thread
However, you remain careful
However, you try
When you try to unwind the thread of three strands
More knots will be formed
When you try to carefully remove the knots
New knots will be formed
Once you try to remove the knots
Finally, the thread itself get damaged
If this truth become clear
Life will take its natural course
If you try to remove the knots
The damage will be total
Relationship too like this
As it is entwisted with each other
Not realizing this if you try to unwind it
Finally, the loss will be yours
Understanding this truth
Mingling with others
Once we live meaningfully
The Truth about life will become clear.
16-6-16, Mathigiri, 1.15 pm.
Relationships are very complicated one. When the threads get twisted (சிக்கல், முடிச்சு), several times when we try to remove the twist, the entire thread gets damaged. As I do the cross stitch, I have faced this problem several times. The best option is to accept a little damage and cut where it is twisted and use the rest of the thread. The same is the case with relationships. In the name of correcting the wronged person, if we begin to explain too much, it gets more complicated. The better option is to cut the damage part alone and continue to live with this reality in life.
This reminds me of a joke, though women will excuse me as in the original it was only about women, particularly about one’s wife: If your wife says “CORRECT ME IF I AM WRONG” smile and agree. Never try to do that. That is a trap.
Song 179

179 cheppel and relationship
New cheppel
Bites
New relationship
Is very sweet
Once used with it
It becomes old one
Then we will
Understand
When it bites
We cannot throw it
Though it is precious/costly
We cannot keep
Relationship is
Also, like this
As we walk
More and more
The cheppel
Will get adjusted
As we continue
Our relationship
We will
Understand about it
New chapel will
Soon become old one
Relationship also
Like that
When worn out
We can buy
A new cheppel
By throwing one
But we cannot
Throw the
Relationship like that
We should understand this
We can even walk
Without cheppel
But we cannot
Live without relationship
This we will
Realize soon
Mathigiri, 17-6-16, 11.10 p.m.
As my old sandal wore-out I began to use my new one. But it began to bite. I found it difficult to use. At the same time unable to walk without sandals, I adjusted my leg to get used to the biting. As my mother saw that I was limping while walking with the new sandal, she said ‘new sandals always bites’. Then using the same proverb, I wrote this song. There is no other reason for this.
It is difficult to translate such prose types of poems in English. The summary of this song is this:
New sandals sometimes bite and once we use them, then we can walk. But we cannot throw it outright as it bites. On the other hand, new relationships always look very sweet. Once we come close, then familiarity breeds contempt. However, unlike a sandal which won’t be useful for us, we cannot throw away our relationship with others that much easily. Because we can manage to walk even without sandals, but we can never live without a relationship.
Song 180

180 Someone else
I become upset with someone else
But how to tell it to you
When I searched who is that person
Finally, it is I, what to say further to you?
When I refuse to accept myself
I get irritated with others
Though I understand this truth
I find it difficult to accept it, what can I do?
I search for various reasons (to blame others)
And reflect all that went in the past (to accuse them)
Yet knowing who is reasonable for that
I find it difficult to accept, what else can I say?
Who has the answer for this?
I searched in many places
Finally, when I found it that it is within me
I refuse to accept that answer
I pretend that I don’t know the answer
Though I already knew it
However, I pretend, once my character is revealed
I see that my drama came to an end
That time as my anger turned towards me
Then soberly I began to search for the reason
Unable to accept the answer which is already I knew
Again, I began to attack someone else
18-6-16, Mathigiri, 6.30 am.
One main issue in interpersonal relationship is that when we fail to accept as we are, then not understanding it, we become upset with others. Others are not responsible for most of the problems and strains in our relationship with them. When we sit and soberly think about it, though we realize, unable to digest, again we blame someone else for our failures. This is my experience.
The following advice by Bapuji (Mahatma Gandhiji) is relevant for me in this context:
191. LETTER TO ESTHER FAERING
LAHORE,
January 24, 1920
MY DEAR CHILD,
… Only remember one thing, never allow your spirit of sacrifice to go to the length of making you sour and disgusted with yourself or your surroundings. This is one of the sorest temptations to which workers are exposed. They go on sacrificing themselves till they become disgusted with everything and everybody for want of response. We sacrifice truly only when we expect no response. It is well worth knowing the root meaning of the word. It means, as you might know, ‘to make sacred’. We make neither ourselves nor others sacred when we are irritated or angry. There is often more sacrifice sacred making in a divine smile than in so-called substantial sacrifice. The instances of Mary and Magdalene1 occur to me as I write these lines. Both were good but the one who simply waited upon her Lord without making any fuss was probably more self-sacrificing than the other. And so may it be with you. Do not overtax your spirit in trying to win over Mrs. Gandhi or anybody else. Immediately you find that you cannot get on with her, you must have a separate kitchen for yourself. You could still serve her but not be so intimate with her. Nothing that you do there should tire out either your spirit or your body.
1 This appears to be a slip for “Martha”.
