Secular Song 256 Should know one’s limitation
Each one should know her limitation
And do accordingly
If unnecessarily we carry any burden
Half way we will fall down
Once after knowing one’s own strength, support and opponent’s strength
Then we should engage with them
If we unnecessarily interfere
Then we should pay for that
Somehow, I have done the mistake
And unnecessarily involved
Now become like the monkey
Which put its tail and removed the wood in between the gap@
I am troubled like the monkey
Which put its hand inside the coconut (to collect it) @?
And if someone come to help me
Then I ran along with that coconut
Once it gives up the collected coconut in its hand
Then it can pull its hand outside
But it does not have that common sense
I never learnt even after burned
1-11-16, Mathigiri, 2.15 pm.
Our wisdom comes out of our experience and our experience comes out of mistakes. But sometimes in life we are trapped in such a situation where we cannot escape from the burden which we are forced to carry.
@ Both the monkey story is a Tamil proverb. In order to split a big log, they will make a small crack and insert a wood in it and continue to use the axe to cut it. A monkey, after putting its tail on the crack, removed the wood and trapped it. Similarly, a monkey managed to open a coconut and put its hand inside and collected the coconut. But as the hole was small it cannot remove its handful of coconut. Then it ran everywhere carrying the coconut with it, at the same time unable to release its hand. It can do it easily, once it gives up the coconut from the hand to pull it out from the small hole. But as it doesn’t have that common sense, it does not want to give up the coconut suffered till the end.
Though we have common sense, trapped by circumstance we end up in a similar situation.
Secular Song 257

Secular Song 257 Along with age I should grow
We should have buddhi according to our age
And should grow in life accordingly
If we behave childishly
Then we will get trouble
There is no point of growing in body alone
What is the use of become grown up
We should develop our buddhi along with it
And should be expressed properly through our speech
Our life will become rotten
If we fail to control our tongue
And if pride join with it
Where is the solution for that?
It is not enough to read many things
Not thinking oneself as a learned person
One should have meekness along with it
And should know how to adjust in life
If we think that ‘my way is high way’
Anybody can travel in it
If we too join them to go in it
We may end up facing danger
Not listening the elders
We should not behave as if super intellect
We should listen a bit from others
And should act accordingly with proper thinking
Mathigiri, 2-11-16, 2.10 pm.
This is one constant problem that I am often facing in my life. This life as a single person gives immense freedom, particularly ‘not listening’ to others and I often behave childishly. As I reflected upon my own nature, I wrote this song addressing me.
Secular Song 258

Secular Song 258 Don’t draw a circle
If you draw a round around you
And if you stand within it
With your own rules and regulation
Others cannot come and play with you
Nothing wrong in self retrospection
It never remained a wrong notion
But if one shrinks within oneself
There is no place for others in it
Searching so many things outside
Doing many things unnecessarily
If we waste our time without any purpose
There is no time for personal analyse
Standing in between these two extremes
Keeping any eye on both sides
Judging one with the other
We should learn to live in this world
One will never win
When play all alone
None won any race
By running all alone
Mathigiri, 7-11-16, 2.10 pm.
Writing in the context of Possession, Elisabeth Schombucher writes:
Despite its dramatic appearance, which at first sight is emotionally overwhelming to an outsider, possession states are verbally constructed events whose structures are well ordered and can be anticipated by the audience. Besides the two types of protagonists mentioned above, a third element is needed in possession, the audience. Words spoken in a state of possession cannot be efficacious on their own. Despite (p.236) the ritual setting in which they are spoken and the communicative competence of the possessed person, they need an addressee who makes them efficacious. Speaking alone does not provide words with illocutionary power, but merely acts as a presupposition for listeners to do so.—“Possession” in Will Sweetman & Aditya Malik (eds.) Hinduism in India: Modern and Contemporary Movements, New Delhi, Sage, 2016l, pp. 236-37
This is equally true with other areas in life. Being human means just: SOCIAL ANIMAL.
Secular Song 259

Secular Song 259 Our greatness
Doing what we could do
And sharing what we have
If we live with others
There will be meaning in our life
We humans are someone special
If we realize it, there is profit
From the rest of the creation
We have one thing different
To realize about the purpose of life
To understand its secret
To share our life with others
We know a means to do it
We have a heart
To live as we realized
To rejoice with others
And to share what we have
If we understand this greatness
And live accordingly
And realize the true nature of the heart
There is meaning in our life
Mathigiri, 10-11-16, 2.40
The free will that we have, the choice that we can make and the heart to understand all these is our greatness. If we live accordingly our life will become meaningful one.
Secular Song 260
260 struggles which I cannot understand
With whom I should struggle
For what purpose I should do it
And not knowing
How to do it
To found one answer
After struggling with me
Finally I
Found one answer:
Not knowing
Why this struggle
Not knowing
How to struggle
Arguing many things
For that unnecessary struggle
Unable to win in the end
All become calm
Then discussing about it
Giving thousands of reasons for that
Unable to come to any conclusion
By anyone
Nothing is learnt
From this
Except
Wasting our time unnecessarily
As all realized this
At the end leaving me alone
Then I understood this truth
All alone
Mathirigi, 10-11-16, 11.10 pm.
Translating this song in English is very difficult for me. The main theme is that we analyse the reason for the entire human struggle and are unable to understand the reason and origin of it. Then we began to analyse why we cannot reach any conclusion. Then we realize that merely we wasted our time and energy in analysing and finding solutions to the struggle which no one knows ‘why, when and what’ is the real struggle. Finally, as all left to mind their own business, at least I understood this truth that there is no point in analysing the origin of a struggle and trying to find a solution to it. Because even if we manage to trace the origin and find the solution, life is going to move as usual with so many adjustments just for survival.
