Finding solace in Scripture

When anyone is in distress it is natural for her to seek solace in the teaching of her favourite Scriptures, particularly encouraging verse or mantra.  Gandhi said the same that when he is distressed:

‘…I must tell you in all humility that Hinduism as I know it, entirely satisfies my soul, fills my whole being and I find a solace in the Bhagavad Gita and Upanishads that miss even in the Sermon on the Mount.  Not that I do not prize the ideal presented therein, not that some of the precious teachings in the Sermon on the Mount have not left a deep impression upon me, but I must confess to you that when doubts haunt me, when disappointments stare me in the face, and when I see not one ray of light on the horizon I turn to the Bhagavad Gita, and find a verse to comfort me; and I immediately being to smile in the midst of overwhelming sorrow….’ [The Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi, New Delhi, 1968, Vol. 27, p. 435]….— The Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi, New Delhi, 1968, Vol. 27, p. 435, p.139

So it is natural for a bhakta of Bhagavan Muktinath to do the same to find some encouraging verses from Mukti Veda.  But one problem in our bhakti is that we often seek guidance for every kind of problem and situation only in the verses and often fail to notice how the Lord and His followers acted and reacted in that kind of given situation.  In fact, one’s life teaches more than what the verses or mantras teach from the Scripture, as Ramachandra Guha writing about Gandhi said that, ‘What Gandhi said and did makes sense only when we know what he was responding to’( Gandhi Before India, New York, Alfred A. Knopf, 2014 {Original, London, Alle Lane, 2013, p.5).  The same is the case with us.  What the Lord and His followers were ‘responding to’ would help us to face the challenges than mere abstract teachings in verses.

See how the Lord handled people and various kinds of situations.  He was rejected by his family, community, society, even government, disciples and finally even by God.  Similarly, Chottu Lal (Sevanand) also faced lots of challenges in his life.  But rarely they quoted from their known Scripture (Purva Veda) or sought solace only in their verses but based on their Trust in God and past experience faced the challenges in a given situation for which there is no clear and direct answer from the Scripture.

We too often face such situations in life.  To be or not to be the question before us.  In such situations, though we can seek and recall the promise of God through His verses, still we can learn a lot from their life.  Though Mukti Veda never leaves a pattern for us to imitate, it still gives us principles for us to interpret according to our need not only through the verses but also from the life of its characters.

It is a well known fact that several people were much impressed and got clearer guidance by reading the Autobiographies and biographies than from any plain reading of the Scripture.
