Secular Songs 306 to 310

Secular Song 306

Secular Song 306 We can live celebrating life

There is no hurry

And there is no need

We can live each day

Celebrating life

We run saying that

We don’t have time

Not knowing for

Which we are running

When we come back to home

The outside burden won’t go

If we go outside

The home burden won’t diminish

We live somehow

Not knowing that

For whom we toil

And what purpose we are living

We say that

We don’t life for ourselves

Everybody says the same

To others

Saying that we are

Carrying other’s burden

We never realize that

We are only carrying our own burden

Others are living with us and

We too are living with others

We always live with others

Not living for others

Once we

Realize this truth

We can live each day

Celebrating life

Mathigiri, 3-5-2017,11.30 pm.

After writing the previous song, I again reflected about the real life which I voluntarily choose to live.  I often say that we never live for others but live with others. Once we understand this truth, then everyday life becomes a celebration rather than a burden.

Secular Song 307

Secular Song 307 Monkey’s verdict

Whether right or wrong I don’t know

There is none to enlighten me on this

Some say that it is correct

Others refute it and say ‘no that is wrong’

Finally, my condition became

Like the food which the monkey divided (between two cats)

But who is the monkey

Is the final question here?

Some said that living as single is wrong

And it is good only to live with others

But there is no use in both these

And it is wrong to take even birth, others said

Right or wrong somehow, we took birth

We live only with others

Even if we live to alone

We depend upon others for that also

Not understanding these

Some arbitrating in between us

Try to give verdict like the monkey

Without any use for us at the end

That monkey is none else

Other than our own mind

If we give too much concession

Finally, it alone will over rule us

We should listen to what it says

Then we need to analyse it

And to settle our issues

We should approach a third party’s counsel also.

Mathigiri, 5-5-2017,10.10 pm.

‘One’s own atman is one’s friend and one’s own atman is her enemy’, says Bhagavad Gita (6:6).  This is true in several issues, particular in deciding about our life while we live with others.  But several times if we allow only our atman/mind/buddhi to have the final say, then we cannot reach any objective conclusion which would be reasonable. There alone we need the help and counsel of others, particularly our well-wishers.  But when we allow only our own mind/buddhi to make a decision then we will end up receiving the verdict like the bread which the monkey volunteered to divide between two cats which were fighting over it to have exactly equal share.  At the end both cats have to walk away without having even a small piece as the monkey ate the entire bread while dividing to give equal share.

I hope you all know the story: One time two cats saw bread and began to fight to have it only for them.  And a monkey sitting on the branch watched and wanted to have it for himself.  Then he interfered and said to the cats, ‘why you fight over it?  Let you both have half of it’.  Finally, they agreed but again began to fight over who would divide it exactly half. Then the monkey volunteered to divide it for them.  When they consented, the monkey took the bread and divided and began to weigh on both hands and said, ‘Oh oh. The share in the left hand is a bit excess.  So you decide who will have it’. Then the cats began to fight over it. Then the monkey said, ‘Ok. Stop fighting. Let me do justice to you both’. And it bites the extra bread in the left hand and eats it.  Now the one in the right hand becomes excess. In this process of dividing equally at the end the monkey had only a very tiny bit left on both the hands and said, ‘now what is the use of having this tiny bit. As I wasted my time to divide the bread among you equally, I feel very hungry’. By saying this it ate the remaining bread and jumped back to the branch. Now the helpless cats walked away empty stomach learning a good lesson.

Secular Song 308

Secular Song 308 A lamentation

What is the use of?

Living further in this world

Why should I live?

I cannot understand this

Body become tired

Mind get depressed

And the soul swing

In between them

There is nothing

To see new things

As life becomes routine

It becomes tasteless

There is no use

To live further

As there is no

Aim in life

Old age is

Indeed a burden

Once crippled

What is the use for anyone?

Living further

Is great pain

And there is no

Deliverance from this

Can we blame?

One who created us?

Or can we find fault

With our parents

Once this remain

A common thing for all

Can I find a

Separate way for me?

Mind is urging to

Lament by saying something

And there is no use

Even saying this, I understand

But what else the means

To unload the burden

And where is other

Ways other than this?

Mathigiri, 9-5-2017,10.15 pm.

As my mother is suffering from a severe chest cold and cough, with fever in between I too cannot take proper rest.  As the domestic helper also stopped coming to work, I have to do all the errands along with cooking and taking care of my mother.  So almost my routine life of reading and writing came to an end, as I often feel tired and lay down on my cot when I get some time.  As I was again lying on my cot unable to read and at the same time unable to sleep, I thought about such a life which goes on without having any aim. I constantly and sincerely pray for the early departure of both me and my mother without further living.  As I was contemplating on this, I got up and wrote this song, as this is the only means I have to unload my burden.

Secular Song 309

Secular Song 309 None can do

World will

Never weep for you

It won’t shed

Tears along with you

When each one has

Their own struggle

Where is the time

For each other

There is no point

In blaming others

Because we too are

Like them

Though we say

Few comforting words

Beyond that

We cannot do much

Others can assist and help

Through money and service

Sometimes they can

Spare a bit of their time (for us)

Remaining with us

Till the end is

Impossible for

Anyone

What others contribute

In small portions

Will become a large

If we calculate them all

Thinking only that

Remaining thankful

Each one has to

Carry her burden

Mathigiri, 10-05-2017, 11.15 am.

When I was reflecting about our plight and the way others involve to help us, I wrote this song. This is not pessimism but realism. But when we see the way each contribute a bit, at the end becomes more than what we required to face the problem.  Instead of calculating the overall blessing, when we focus only on our problem or others limitation or little contribution, then we cannot face the reality of life.  Instead, when we see the light at the of the tunnel amidst the problem we can still live with hope.

Secular Song 310

Secular Song 310 Should accept

We should accept the life

As it comes

And we should not lament

What has already came

We don’t have the right

To decide what should come

There is no use in trying

To change what has already came

Yet not giving up

Our right to change

We should learn

To fight back

Not excusing ourselves that

This is ‘my fate’

We should do our part

Each day completely

Learning to live

Accepting what has come

We should enrich

Our life always

Even if we cannot change

At the end

We should accept the fact that

Unchanging change as it is

Mathigiri, 28-5-2017, 11.30 pm.

Accepting the life as it is, at the same time doing our best to make it enjoyable or at least managable is part of human endeavor.  It looks paradox for me that though we cannot decide what should come, but try to bring some change is our right.  It is another kind of karma theory. Though we cannot decide which cards should come to our hand, yet how we play decides the game. Of course however we know the game unless relatively good cards come, however we play we cannot easily win. So which card should come also a kind of fatalism and also depends upon how others play.  Even good cards came, unless one knows how to play properly cannot win at the end.
