Fanaticism versus orthodoxy

Only a very thin line divides both FANATISM and ORTHODOXY.  There is nothing wrong in saying that,’ My God is the WAY and MY guru is the acharya’.  This is orthodoxy.  But when one small four letter word is added in between this proclamation then it becomes fanaticism.  That word is: ONLY. My God is the ONLY way and my guru is the ONLY acharya’.

Let me take the example from Bhagavad Gita where Krishna says:

Whichever form a bhakta worships with faith (bhakti); I make the same faith unwavering, viz. I am endorsing it.—My own translation.7:21

yo yo yāṁ yāṁ tanuṁ bhaktaḥ śhraddhayārchitum ichchhati
tasya tasyāchalāṁ śhraddhāṁ tām eva vidadhāmyaham

Or let me quote another famous sloka:

 Aakashat Patitam Toyam Yatha Gachhati Sagaram | SarvaDevNamaskaaran Keshav Pratigachhati ||

Meaning – As the water dropped from the sky goes to the ocean / sea, the salutation to all the gods goes to Krishna / Vishnu.

And let me quote one from Saiva tradition:

Yaadoru daivam kondeer ath daivamaahi

Maadoru bahane varuvar

Which deity you accepted as your choose god

Siva (ardhanarishvara) will appear only in that form to you.2

We can safely say that all these are statements of orthodoxy. But if we say that all the worship reaches only Keshava or Siva alone appears in other deities then it becomes fanaticism.

The same is the case with every other faith.  Let me take one famous example from Christianity which they often misinterpret thinking that it is the correct way to understand and express their orthodoxy.  Here I have to use many words to make my point very clear with scholarly reference. Otherwise, I will be dismissed as a Liberal.  Well, I often say it is better to be a liberal and a bhakta than a fanatic.

The context of exclusive claims:

For example, Acts 4:12 : ‘Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved’, (NIV)is quoted as proof of the unique claim about salvation only through Muktinath.  Now the question that comes to my mind is this, ‘Is the verse addressed to all the people living under the sun, or to the followers of Mukti Nath.  As per the context–is it addressed to those who are opposing the preaching about the Lord as the ONLY WAY.? About this, A.T. Robinson says, ‘The word for “saved” here (and hence “salvation”) is exactly the same as that rendered three verses earlier in Acts 4:9 by “cured”. The context is not one of comparative religion but of faith-healing.  The issue is “by which power” the cripple is made “completely well” (3.16).  Is it by some innate power or godliness of the apostles (3.12), or is it by “the name of Jesus, awakening faith”’ (3.16)?3  The same is the case with John 10:8, which again, according to Robinson, ‘ has nothing to do with comparative religion’.4   The following explanation offered by Robinson on John 14:6 will further highlight this point:

Much the same must be said of another Johannine text, which is frequently put to exclusivist use: ‘Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life: no one comes to the Father but by me”’ (14.6).  The context here is Thomas’s question about how the disciples can know where Jesus is going, and therefore, how they can know the way.  The answer is that he is going to the Father, and since they know him, they have no need to ask further.  With Philip, ‘Show us the Father’: to have seen Jesus is to have seen the Father (14.1-11).  The point the evangelist is making, to use an earlier distinction, is that Jesus as the Christ is totus Deus: the Father is perfectly reflected in him, he is God ‘all through’.  There is no suggestion in the context that he is claiming to be totum Dei, that outside him there is no truth or life to be found.  The assurance is that in him truth and life are to be found; therefore, there is no cause for anxious fears.5

But fanaticism reaches its peak when the fanatics are so worried about others, particularly ‘friends’ going to hell and they ONLY going to HEAVEN.  The only response to this is: SHOW ME THAT YOU ARE SAVED AND THEN I WILL BELIEVE IN YOUR SAVIOUR.

When their friends’ lives become hellish on earth, they least bother to help him/her.  But worried too much about their not going to hell.  Remember the famous saying: Charity begins at home.  Are you contributing anything tangible to make the life on earth as a glimpse of heaven as Sant Jnanewar asks us to ‘change the earth as swarg’ (dharti ko svarg banate chalo).  Listen to the whole song sung beautifully Bharat Ratna Lata Ji which is available in Youtube, even with English meaning.

I will complete this with one point.  How to begin at home?  If you segregate the plastic wastes and from green waste in your home and send the plastic waste only for recycling and not burning, then you will take the first step to make the earth as heaven.  Even in this small endeavour when we all people on earth have collectively failed, then why worry about anyone going to hell.  God will take care of the souls as She alone created it.  First try to make your surroundings, beginning from home as heaven, thn merely become a FANATIC to claim EXCLUSIVISM by misinterpreting your own text.  Never remain an angel in the street and devil in the house.

Google Translation.  Needs to be properly edited
