Secular Song 486
I swore to all husbands that this is not my song. Last night in my dream one husband came and lamented about his situation. And I give only verbal expression to it through this song. But this is not my song!!!
This evening one interesting thing I came to know. Last night my nephew came after 2.00 am (midnight) and went to his parents’ house and demanded food from his mother. She got up and prepared hot food and served him. Interestingly he lives with his wife in the next street and in fact when he comes from the railway station he has to first cross his house to reach his parent’s home. When my mother heard this from my sister and later complained about it to me, I told my mother, ‘no mother will say “no” when her child demands food at any time. But a husband knows that he cannot do the same with his wife.’
I also witnessed another interesting event. One time when I was with a family who hosted several people for lunch at the end of the lunch, the husband asked his wife if she would prepare some block coffee as some guests wanted. Immediately she said, ‘No. I become tired’. Then the husband silently went to the kitchen and heated the water and prepared some block coffee by mixing some instant coffee powder. I was there with my close friend and we each saw each other with much surprise. Because the whole morning two cooks were cooking the food. The wife was only resting in her room and came when the lunch was served. Of course she served the guests very nicely by serving the food. Whereas if you ask your mother, who might have even prepared the meal, won’t say no even if she becomes tired of a coffee that too without milk and sugar or regular tea with ginger, milk etc.
I say this not to degrade all women. But the same women when becoming a mother behave in one way but when she is a wife behave in a different way. Of course we cannot generalize all the wives, but as I have observed several such incidents and as that husband came and lamented in my dream I wrote this song to console him.

Secular Song 486 You should join me to weep
The mother
Who is full of love?
When becomes
Mother-in-law; daughter-in-law and wife
Has become
A devil
Unable to tolerate it
I ask you this!
Forgetting her pleasure
Renouncing her welfare
When she can only think
About her child alone
When comes to me
She becomes a ‘Durga’
And if I ask why?
She becomes more upset
The one who
Brings up her child by feeding milk
When cooks for me
Why does she forget me? (Completely)
‘Eat whichever is given
And go silently’ she tells me
Before I could open my mouth
She manages it to close it (by her words)
The mother who
Brings up the child carefully
Often forgets that
I too am the father (to that child)
When she tolerates the child
Which forgets its debt to her?
She asks accounts
For my debt to her (as a husband)
The one who lives
Not to become a burden to her child
Somehow thinks me
As a burden (to her)
Even the gods
Which are living in the form of a mother?
Also tremble
When think about their wives
There is no means
To pay the debt to a mother
But there is none
Even to remember my debt by them
The feminists also
Never think about me
There is none here
To talk about for men
You have escaped
Not marrying
Can only write
About mothers
Just become a husband
Even for a day
Then you will understand
The condition of the husbands
Knowing this
Realizing my situation
You should come
To weep with me

Secular Song 487
Every defeat is only a guru to teach the secret for success. Once we realize this, then there is no concept of defeat in life.
Secular Song 487

Secular Song 487 Non-existing defeat
There is no defeat
Even in our life
I never accept
Anything as a defeat
When we refuse to
Accept the success
Automatically
Defeat will come and stand before us
When we become
Afraid of it
It will make us to belief
That it is real
Taking courage
When we oppose it
It will run back
By keeping its tail in between the legs
Chasing it when
We change it
It will show the way for success
Guiding us from the front
Through the lesson
Which we learnt from defeat
When we again strive
Success will come automatically

Secular Song 488
One of the old age scenarios is the thought that others cannot do the work properly as they used to do. Even if they give the responsibility to them (with some hesitation) when they are doing the work, often they will come and interfere by seeing whether the things are going as per the ideal? Before completing a part of the work, they will shout at them not to do this or that. The next generation may have their better ideas and means to do the same work in a different way. But not knowing about it, thinking that only the old ideas and means alone will work well, we old age people won’t wait till the work is done. Of course, this we faced when we were young from our seniors and the present youths will do the same to their next generation. Once we give the responsibility, let us close our eyes and ears allowing the next generation to do the work. There is no other option other than this if we want to have peace both for us and others.
Secular Song 488

Secular Song 488 Should keep away
You should
Learn to live peacefully
You should stop
Hurrying like this
Once you came
To the edge of the life
You should stop
Carrying burden
Once you know
That you cannot do it
Not think that
Let us try it
Realizing the
Condition of the old age
You should learn
To keep patience
Giving room
For the young generation to take responsibility
You should
Give space them by standing away
You should give up
The thought that
None is there
To do well like me
Not poking your
Nose often
In order to show
That you know well
You should understand
The irritation
Which others
Get because of that
So far we have done
What we managed to do
Now let us give space
For others to accomplish
If some one coming
Seeking advice
come and seeks
Then let us give
Thinking about the peace
Which comes because of this?
Let us say thanks
By folding both our hands

Secular Song 489
Recently I witnessed what it means to be caught between a rock and hard place. Wife standing on the upper staircase mother standing in the down steps shouting at each other, the poor son cum husband sat paralyzed keeping his hands on his head. Like our TV debate both the ladies were not listening to each other but shouting towards the poor man. It is interesting to know the context. When the marriage was arranged, the girl demanded a car from his father. But the boy’s mother objected to it by saying that first they should finish the marriage, later when money is available the car can come. But pestered by the girl, her father booked the car but was unable to pay the balance. So after the marriage, when the boy received notice from the showroom to pay the balance and take the car, his wife suggested pledging her jewels to take the car. But his mother objected to it by saying that others will only blame her, and asked her son to pledge her jewels and get the money. Finally he listened to his mother’s advice and brought the car. Then it becomes the bone of contention. When they took the car often, mother became irritated by saying, why waste so much petrol when you have two two-wheelers (he already has one motorcycle and scooter). But the wife said once the car came she cannot go on the two wheeler.
When it became a serious issue and there was a lot of tension, finally when it became an issue between husband and wife, the wife told me, ‘he is a good boy but he cannot take personal decision’. But I cannot understand one thing: listening to his wife’s decision alone means making a personal decision? After several rounds of fight and argument, finally in the climax when both the mother and wife were shouting at the boy keeping him in between them, I watched it silently, unable to do anything but writing this poem.
Are any feminist listening?
Secular Song 489
The one has come (wife)
is not proper, says mother
He was not brought up
properly, says wife
taking birth itself
is sinful indeed, he says
and there is no
means to escape

Secular Song 489 pity Indeed
What a man
Can do in this?
If he is beaten
On both sides
Wife says that
He cannot take his own decision
Mother says that
He only listens to others (which means wife)
He become like a
Dolak (pakavaj)
Beaten on both sides
Will become mad
How much he tries
To escape
Till the end
He has to play this kabadi match
When his mother
Attacks him by
Saying that
He listens to only his wife
Wife retaliate by
Saying that
His mother tries to
Control him as done to his father
On the one side
The mother who was also a wife
On the other side
The wife who became a mother
Seeing this
His father is laughing
And telling to his son
Do you understand now?
Caught between
Mother and wife
The poor boy
Is shedding tears
Whatever might one say?
Man also indeed pitiable
But there is no woman
Who is ready to accept this?

Secular Song 490
Cold has increased since the last few days. Though this morning as usual I got up, then I saw the time. It was only 5.55. Then I thought let me lay down for another five minutes. But as the milk would come, unable to sleep, I got up and began to do the regular kitchen work. That time I said to myself, ‘I too long to sleep some more time’. Then stepping into the shoes of a woman who toils day and night, I wrote this song. When I wrote I recalled another such song from the West. East or West, women have the same work everywhere.
She cooked the breakfast first of all,
Washed the cups and plates,
Dressed the children and made sure
Stockings all were mates.
Combed their heads and made their beds.
Sent them out to play
Gathered up their motley toys,
Put some books away,
Dusted chairs and mopped the stairs,
Ironed an hour or two
Baked a jar of cookies and
A pie, then made a stew
The telephone rang constantly,
The doorbell did the same,
A youngster fell and stubbed his toe,
And then the laundry came
She picked up blocks and mended socks,
Then she polished up the stove
(Gypsy folks were fortunate
with carefree ways to rove!)
And when her husband came at six
He said: ‘I envy you!
It must be nice to sit at home
Without a thing to do!
(Mothers) work on our behalf is never done.—Prev, un-known author about mothers in Good News Broadcaster, in 1985.
Secular Song 490

Secular Song 490 I too like to sleep
I too have a desire
To sleep a bit extra (in a cold morning)
But due to my responsibilities
There is no place for it in my life
Whenever I go to sleep last night
I need to get up early in the morning
Before the milk man goes
I have to get the milk from him
Once the sleep is gone
After have a cup of tea
In order to see rest of the work
I have to go to the kitchen
Raising the (grand) children from bed
Dressing them up in a hurry
And pushing some food in their mouth
I have to send them to the school
To my husband who gets up leisurely
When he come and asks
I have to give coffee to him
And send him for bathing (even arranging hot water for him)
I have to cook breakfast
Also lunch and dinner
After taking bath I have to
Wash cloths and dry them
After giving food in time to those
Who are living with us (my mother-in-law)
If there is any leftover food
I have to swallow them
After clearing the kitchen
And washing the dishes
When I sit bit leisurely
The next work will come in time
Not minding the disturbance
When the phone rings in between
I have to attend the calls
And should go to do other works
When the neighbours
Come to talk with me
Definitely I should
Gossip with them
I should silently see
All the atrocities of my daughter-in-law
(History repeats here)
I should also listen to all the
Murmurs of my mother-in- with much pain in my ear
Once the (grand) children
Return back from school
I have to sit and
Do the home works along with them
Somehow as the
Day has gone
I need to watch in the evening
Without fail all the TV serials
Whenever they come and stand
Not minding the time
To those who return from
Their jobs (this is daughter-in-law)
Heating the cooked food
I should fill their stomach
Added to this
I also need to prepare some special snakes to them
When I try to take bit rest
After I became tired
As my mother-in-law calls
Immediately I should rush to attend her
As the day is gone like this
How can I go and sleep for sometime
If I tell this to others
They will say that I am going overboard
They will say that: ‘You are fortunate as
You can stay in the home without need to do any work
Only you need to cook and
Enjoy good food (for yourself) and sleep’!
If they work like me
Even staying one day in the home
Then they will
Realize about my condition
Working like this all through life
Without receiving any remuneration for that
Only receiving rebukes and scolding
Alone became by salary
Finally in the end
Until Yama come and takes me back
There is no chance for me
To sleep bit extra in life
