Secular Song 606

Secular Song 606 To unload burden

I need to attain

The bliss of remaining silent

And I should

Live in it

Though sharing

Might reduce heart burden

If we remain silent

The heart burden might completely go

There is no solution

Like that to our heart

There is no other treatment

Like it to our mental stress

All the solutions

That we found after sharing

Is not

Equal to this

The burden that gone

After sharing with others

Might increase when we

Began to think about it further

How much we actually shared

And how much we left

When we think about this

Confusion will increase more

Others who carried

After we have shared

Has began to

Unload it on others

Creating new kinds

Of so many rumours

It will further

Increase the burden

There is a way

To remove the burden

First knowing its

Source of origin

There we should

Find solution to it

And settle the issue

There itself

Otherwise remaining

Silent about it

And if needed

Recording it in writing

For the burden

That came on its own

To go on its own

We need lots of patience

Leaving this and

Often thinking about it

And sharing it

With so many people

As the un-leaving burden

Increasing heart burden further

Then some kind of

Silence will emerge there

This alone is

True here on this earth

There is no substitute

For this

Train yourself to

Remain silent

And then try to live

Silently

Secular Song 607

We all put on different kinds of masks to survive in this world.  But such life will bring some kind of tension as we cannot live our life naturally.  Though out of compulsion to survive we put on a mask, better try to avoid and live your life for yourself.

Secular Song 607

Secular Song 607 Mask

Covering our face

With a mask

And try to act

For others to watch

When we remove

The mask and see our face

That might

Shock us

How many masks

We could change

Just to act

For others sake

A time might come

Not able to change

Even time might come

Unable to change often

But if we continue

to change the mask often like this

Then we will become

An alien to yourself

Unable to accept it

At the same time unable to reject it

Even our life also

Might become an alien to us

Finally, when we

Sit to calculate

Nothing might

Left on our hand

Not getting further

Chance to put mask

And not having

Many more to change

We might not even

Act for the world

And unable to

Live for oneself

Therefore when

We put the mask

Remembering that

This is not permanent one

We should try to live

As much as possible

Naturally our life

For oneself

How many more days

We could act for others

And when we are going

To live for ourselves

Secular Song 608

When I sat with my cup of tea this morning the one question that the local boy asked when yesterday he took me to the Ration shop to put my digital signature [I exchange them for Ragi for me with our ashram helper] was, ‘how you manage to live alone in such a big ashram without anyone living with you?  Are you not bored by such a life?’  Because most of the people in the village around me know that I am living alone, almost no one visiting regularly.  The ashram helper comes just for an hour in the morning.  Then I will lock the door inside and live alone.  In response I said to that boy, ‘I become bored only if someone comes and disturbs my life of solitude.’  As I recalled our talk, I said to myself, ‘is my life and I have no hesitation to accept and live.  Particularly in old age, the best way to live each day is to live your tomorrow today itself to waste your today worrying about your future.  The result is this song.

Secular Song 608

Secular Song 608 This is your life

Once it becomes clear

That this is the life for you

Why hesitate

To accept it?

What is the use of

Longing for the

One in the bush

Not happy with two on the hands

Nothing wrong

To dream about future

That is quiet

Common for all

Do all need

To do the same

If we think like this

Nothing wrong in it also

But what kind of

Life you need

Once you are

One step to grave

What else is

Your requirements

Other than to go

Not becoming a burden to others

Preparing for that

Every day and

Keeping both your body

And mind fit for that

Cooperating with others

Not creating tension often

And work with them

As much as possible

Somehow this

Day is gone o! God

What about

Tomorrow?

Only praying

Like this to him

Is the only option

That is left with us

Thinking clearly

What kind of life

You need

Other than this

Try to live

Each day life like this

Your tomorrow is

Only in this TODAY

Secular Song 609

Guest is the God, says Upanishad [atiti devo bhava].  Valluvar dedicating one separate [ten kurals] for Hospitality insists that the main dharma of a home is to provide wonderful hospitality to every guest.  As Mahabharata says that as Household [grahastashrama] is the foundation for all other ashramas [brahmachari, vanaprastha and sannyasa], emphasis the same concept.  But going beyond them Rumi says that ‘This being human is a guest house’ like so many unexpected and unwanted guests, many problems also would come in our life.  But we should remain grateful to them as they are the ‘guides sent from BEYOND’.

Here is Rumi’s full song:

This being human is a guest house.

Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression a meanness,

some momentary awareness comes

as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!

Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,

who violently sweep your house

empty of its furniture,

still, treat each guest honorably.

He may be clearing you out

for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,

meet them at the door laughing,

and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,

because each has been sent

as a guide from beyond.

— Coleman Barks,  The Essential RUMI,  Introduction to the New Expanded Edition, New York,  HarperCollins, 2004, THE GUEST HOUSE, p. 109

Secular Song 609

Secular Song 609 Many kinds of guests

As householder is

The noble dharma

Many guests

Will come there

Along with

Noble and gentle

Uninvited guests

Will also comes

Unwanted and underserved

Guests often coming

Might give troubles

With much affection

Still receiving them

With true love

One should fulfil

The dharma of the Home

Like them in life also

Along with troubles

Sorrows and depression

Will come as guests

Still receiving them all

And providing wonderful hospitality

Make sure that

They will come again

Like a Toronto

Few might come

Giving lots of

Constant troubles

They might even

Sweep away

All that is

Left behind

Probably they have

Done it

To clean the house

To welcome fresh ones

Thinking like that

Treating them well

We should wait

For next one to come

Unnecessary thoughts

Anger and jealousy

Might come

As guests

May be

Several such

Unwanted guests

Are indeed coming

As the angels of God

To show us the correct path

To guide us clearly

For this world and next

Gurukulam, 12-1-24, 11.55

It’s really good how that verse from Upanishad about welcoming (people) guests into our home can translate into Rumi’s verse about welcoming unwanted thoughts, sensations, feelings, emotions… Having an open heart no matter who or what comes, knowing that deep within us dwells the Lord to Whom we can surrender/offer all these guests.

In the contemplative spirituality I practice, there is a practice called the Welcoming Prayer.. It has helped me a great deal even in easing physical body pain. When I get pain in my back or shoulders or legs, I close my eyes, focus on that area and say welcome to it several times. I imagine wrapping my arms around the pain as if welcoming with love.  That accepting and welcoming attitude has really helped with healing.

Meena, London

13-1-24

I do the same but not welcoming it but to trace from where the pain came and how my body and mind is reacting to it.  When I concentrate, the pain bothers me less and sometimes I even begin to enjoy it.   But your thought of welcoming pain is a very good and indeed great idea that all should embrace.  As Paul Brand and Philip Yancy wrote: all kinds of pains are a gift from God to show that we are still healthy.  Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Secular Song 610

When I sat calmly after doing all my reading, I thought, is it a true life that I am living now?  I cannot understand both what TRUTH is and also the truth about life.  As I continue to think about it, I wrote this poem to express my thoughts.

Secular Song 610

Gurukulam, 17-1-24, 11.55

Secular Song 610 This is the reality

I don’t know

What actually truth is

I don’t know even

How to understand it

The needs of the body

Is not maya

Nothing wrong in

Seeking the needs of the mind

Could we say that this life

That we are living is merely a drama

Or all the needs in life

Are lies or wrong

Could we say that

What looks real on one side

And mere maya on the other

As mere mirage

They say that the life on this earth

Is not permanent

But why they seek

So much for it

Not content with

What already they possessed

How much more they

Seek new things

Once they say that

What they received is not enough

They still say that there is no use in

All that they receive newly

They are longing

For something

But they run after it

Not knowing what actually is it

I don’t want to run

Along with them

But there is no choice

For me to stop [not joining them]

Like a boat without oars

The life on this earth

Is going as per the current in a

Flooded river

If the boat capsized

Unable to reach the shore

Though it is visible

And not knowing how to swim

This now remains

True to me

And I understood it

Very clearly

Therefore, I am living

Each day according to it

I am also carried away

Along with the current of Time
