Secular Song 611
For the past week I was intensively thinking about ‘THOUGHT’. It occupied my mind too much. This is my confirmed belief that our physical brain [not buddhi] is the main seat of all our thoughts. At the same time, I realize that a mere physical brain cannot do that on its own. Then what is the source of the ‘THOUGHT’. Sever times I feel that thoughts are nothing but coming from an empty vessel. That is a riddle. An empty vessel filled only with air and when we try to serve anything from it, nothing will come. But what is the origin of this thought which prompts the mind to create appropriate words? For example, when I started to write a poem, only the first few lines would initially come. But before I complete one line, words will stand in the queue one after the other. This happened last night also. When I got up at 3.00 am, though I became tired and did not want to get up from the bed, still as I called to control my urine I got up and used the restroom. When I lay down, immediately the song for another line [BT 1566] came to mind. Ignoring it, I tried to sleep. As my thought refused to allow that I took my mobile and thought of only recording the first four lines. But once I started to write, before I completed the four lines, the next one came, resulting in another complete song. With much frustration and surprise, I tried to catch my sleep again thinking how so much thought and words could come from an empty mind or physical brain. Till I renounce even the very THOUGHT I cannot escape both from it and words.

Secular Song 611 Empty vessel
Become tired after
Writing several things
Worn out
After thinking much
Now I think
What is left
At the end
With me now
There is no
Shortage for thoughts
And there is no shortage
For words to write down
But what is the stock
On my hand
That is still
Not clear
From where
This thought is coming
And from where
Words are coming to write
How is it possible
To serve
From an
Empty vessel
If there is a condition
Of thoughtlessness
I should
Live in it
If there is a heart
That would renounce thought
Then I should
Possess it
But what I need
More than that
Is the condition
Even to renounce it
If I renounce
The very thought of need
This might
Possible indeed
Till that time
Struggling with
Both thought and words
I have to live

In our ashram, apart from the monthly salary (ten thousand) , if we include other beneficiaries that they get (free two wheeler, bonus, medical help, holidays, interest free loan, etc. etc.) it will be on average 15,000/- per month. Do you know how many hours they (both husband and wife) come and work. Just ONE HOUR in a day. Now the husband also stopped saying that as there is a serious drought, he has to take his sheep two times to graze early in the morning and evening. So only his wife comes and works for an hour. However ,you ask, they won’t do even that regular work properly—won’t give water regularly to the plants and coconut trees, won’t clean outside regularly. Even after they washed the vessels, if we want to use them with hygiene, again we have to wash one more time to remove the soap left inside the vessels. The same with the cloth. We have to soak them with soap powder before they come. They will take it and one time rinse in water and wrench and dry. If you wrench after they left, you can still see soap water coming from the cloth.
I have seen with my own eyes in the North. The servant will apply soap or ash that too not to every vessel. Then she will put it in a bucket full of water. Then she will take it dip in another bucket of clean water and leave it in the vessel’s basket. When the vessels dry, one can clearly see the white soap or ash on the surface of most of the vessels. Those vessels which were not washed either by soap or ash are fortunate to escape from it. The list goes on.
In the past they had some fear about the consequences of karma. Now as everyone’s conscience is almost dead—even our own, no one has fear about anything. The situation in rural areas is the worst. As laborers are not available for any kind of work, we have to learn to survive accepting this reality. Better are the places where the concept of ‘domestic’ helpers is almost absent, like in the West. Going to an old age home won’t solve the problem. Unless you have a huge amount to spend (average 45 thousand per head) you cannot live with basic needs in any old home. So better go and live free old age home—though life would be hell there (though there are few exceptions, where they provide good seva compare to paid old age homes), still you can live with peace of mind thinking, ‘at least here I can experience some true love, kindness and seva’. Otherwise, old age becomes a punishment now in India—everywhere.
Secular Song 612

Secular Song 612 Kaliyug
Curse won’t
Do anything
If you quarrel
Work won’t be get done
Bowing with humility
Falling at their feet
If you beg them
Sometimes work might be done
Don’t ask about
Whom I tell
You all know well
Who they are
If you think about
What domestic helpers do
Tears will flow
Continuously
Often, they will ask for
Increment in salary
But proportionately
They will reduce the work
‘Why you are doing
Like this,’ if asked, they will say:
‘if possible, get
Someone else’.
The way old people
Trapped with them
And go through
All kinds of suffering
There are not enough
Words to explain
There is no use in
Lamenting about it
The boat will be carried
By the cart one time
And the cart will sail
In the boat one time
This old proverb
Never failed
In our life
For sure
Thinking that
Enough is enough
And if we go and join
In an old age home
There suffering
Will become many fold
And we have to even
Spend extra money for that
Unable to live properly
Death also not coming
The condition of the senior people
Living alone
How to tell
I don’t understand
To whom shall we share
We don’t know that also
Children will live
In faraway places
Even if they live close
There is no use in it
This is Kaliyuga
What else is there to say
What is the use of
Blaming anyone else.

Secular Song 613
Secular Song 613

Secular Song 613
We old people have one advantage. First, we managed to survive this long whereas many people couldn’t even cross middle age. Then we gained enough knowledge based on our experience in life about life—whether worth or unworthy. However, that knowledge helps us to cope with the reality of the present life. Unlike others we need not fight to gain new territories but try to defend what we have already gained. So, in several ways, compared to other people’s life there is much to celebrate in old age than lamenting about it. As I was thinking about it, I wrote this poem to celebrate my old age.
Secular Song 613 Celebrate
Understanding completely
Realizing clearly
Live a Full life
In this life
Only good has
Happed so far
The same will happen
In life again
By saying this
Let us live
And let us bless
Deep from our heart
Many indeed
Never got our freedom
Many could not even
Reach old age
Indeed, it is a GREAT
Blessing to reach old age
Thinking this
Celebrate it.
As hearing capacity
Came down
There is no need
To listen to others
As there is no need
To understand many things
There is no need
Even to answer to many questions
Morning, evening
And Night is
Only for those
Who live in haste
Twenty four hours
Is one and the same for us
And it will move
Very slowly for us
Therefore celebrating
Old age
Thinking that
This is the best opportunity
Realizing that
New Spring has come again
Let us live laughing
Joyfully in life

Secular Song 614

Secular Song 614 Remain as a bridge
Doing unnecessary
Arguments
Wasting time
Without any use
Those who merely
Talks all kinds of idealism
Soon become
Worn out
Understanding the
Practical need
Planning the work
Accordingly
Implementing the work
Properly
Will achieve the goal
Who remains as karmayogi
Both are in need
For this world
For the cart of life
To role smoothly
One giving guidance
Clearly
And the other
Implementing it properly
How many hurdles
Come in between
At the end
Both will win
As they both
Do their seva
Properly for
The people in the world
Giving up
This unnecessary argument:
Who is correct
And who is wrong
Remaining as a
Bridge in between them
And try to help them both
To keep in touch with each other
They both should
Toil joining together
In order to do
Welfare to humanity
Not allowing them
To go to one extreme of frustration
And reminding them
Their need in life
We should request them
To mutually understand each other
And work together
For the common cause

Secular Song 615
Forgetting several things is part of the old age scenario. Several times we will search for the specs not only keeping it on our head but also even wearing it. In such a scenario expecting that everything should remain as it is impossible when our own body, mind, and spirit undergo drastic change. Accepting the change and receiving help from others is the only way to survive in this old age.
Secular Song 615

Secular Song 615 Become old
Once we become old
Remaining silent
We should not utter
Unnecessary words
We should give up
The longing that
Nothing goes
As in the past
It is enough
If we could get
A place to stay
And receive water and food
Like this
Spending each day
Somehow, we should
Complete rest of our life
When we forget
And eyesight diminishing
Even hearing also coming down
As we often babble
How is it possible
For us to talk clearly
And who can understand
Us correctly
When we search
For the specs
Keeping it on head
And pointed by others
Once we reached
This stage
We might even
Forgot ourselves
One way this
Is also good for us
Only keeping this
In our mind
Once for all
Renouncing that
Youth-hood will
Never return back
As we live
Just one step to grace
It is enough to complete this life
Living like this
