When I went for my evening walk, I began to talk with the Lord, as I often do. Then I said to him, ‘You never allowed me to live with any want and there is no shortage for anything in my life. Even before I ask you to stand to serve readily. But the only fear that you have is whether I will make any complaint about any shortcoming.’ After this initial task and even teasing him that he is afraid of my complaints, I took the mobile and began to record these thoughts as a poem (which I don’t like as I have to often stop and record the lines). When I returned back and began to copy the song in the notebook, before completing it I said ‘but there is one thing that I need but you are not at all listening’. Then began the argument between me and the Lord. Finally, as usual he won it (I think for the first time).
It is difficult to translate this song in English. It is a kind of dialogue.

BT Song 776 A shortcoming is there
Somehow I lived so far
I received everything because of you
Now I know the way to reach Further Shore
By living the rest of the life like this.
What kind of shortage you left for me
Which one you denied once I asked
Once you gave yourself for me
You gave everything only for me.
You set apart the kind of life which I preferred
And you gave that kind of life which I liked
Though you also are living with me
You refuse to give me any trouble.
You refuse to ask me
What is my need and when I need it?
Even before I ask anything
You provided everything to me.
You only asked:
‘Still is there any shortage’ (for anything)
But you were so afraid thinking that
‘I would say “yes” I have one.
“What is the use of providing all these?
Still I have one personal desire”,
Before I could even complete this
You closed my mouth (not allowing me to talk further)!
“I know what is it and I know
When to give it to you”
By giving this proper response
You changed the topic of our dialogue.
“Even before I could complete
If you shut up my mouth, then how can I share” I responded.
“Did I ever provide anything to you only after you have asked?”
You gave this answer to that also.
What can I do now?

As I came to the Dhyanamandapa for meditation and prayer, I said to myself that it is really pitiable that many don’t understand the secret of worship as it will be the correct antidote for many issues in life. Singing and praising the Lord that too with new songs is the best way for me to overcome all my frustration and bitterness in life. As I began to reflect on it, I wrote this song to sing and worship him today.

BT Song 777 Receive Grace
If Grace alone is available that is enough on this earth
What else one needs other than this in life
It is enough to have clear conviction in life
Then it will prompt one to seek the feet of the Lord.
Once we worship the Lord
All the confusion will flee away
Once we approach the guru
All blemishes will come down automatically
Really it is pitiable indeed
After coming to this earth not knowing this.
It is really very sad to live without receiving the redemption
Even though he is ready to offer it.
If you want to get rid of your chanchal (frustration)
Then seek the presence of God
If you want him to remove all your troubles
Take refuge at his feet.
When you are still alive better you know this
Giving up false ways and come to Him
The one which you cannot receive after you have gone
Try to get it before you are gone.
Seeking it from Him
Beg him to redeem you
Worshiping him wholeheartedly
Receive the grace to get redemption.

Another fight between me and the Lord. Knowing several of my shortcomings he refuses to remove them and allow me to live and struggle with them. But as He allows me even after my repeated request to help me to overcome several of my shortcomings I told him clearly that I don’t need his comforting words anymore as he is not ready to listen to my prayer. Then out of frustration I wrote this song to vent out my anger with the Lord. This also is one of my shortcomings.

As the days are coming closer and closer for me to go away from the ashram, I tried to use more of my time to be with the Lord. Several times, tossing on my bed also I was communicating with him both in my spirit and mind. So this morning when I came to Dhyanamandapa again I rejoiced the time that God gave me to be with him to worship him and enjoy his fellowship. To celebrate that relationship I wrote this song. Though God alone can take us to the Further Shore, the role of our mind in it cannot be ignored. That is why I said that it will take me to the Further Shore but not of its own.

Though this song belongs to the genre of viraha bhakti, yet even, in this kind of bhakti also there is a place to accept it and even rejoice in it as mere physical separation can never close the relationship between a bhakta of bhagavan. Therefore once the atman never experienced any separation from the Lord, mere emotional level of experience through songs, prayer etc., even not required in such bhakti.
In Nachiyar Thirumozhi Andal beautifully describes her dream in which she saw her marriage with Vishnu. It is a beautiful poem and I think if you are interested you can check the net to see the English translation. In old Tamil films such songs are very common but written beautifully.
