“The present generation youth are not listening to their elders. They love to stand before the mirror and spend time on makeup.” Can you guess who said this? It is believed that Socrates said this about 2500 years ago. Every generation, the older people repeat the same about the young generation.
Now, the trend has changed. Once social media invaded our lives, everyone got trapped in it, and even elders are not ready to impart any advice or listen to the young generation, even if the youth want to share something. In the past, I have seen retired people spending several hours doing puja and other Sadhana. I remember our co-tenant in Trichy when I was in college, a retired person, would begin his puja around 7:30 in the morning and complete it around 11:30. Even now, my brother spends a minimum of three hours in puja, plus three times of Sandhyavandan, and an hour in the evening visiting the temple. He does not have a smartphone or social media. He only reads the newspaper. In the afternoon, he spends a minimum of two hours doing Ved Adhyayan (svadhyaya). Though my father never did any puja or went to the temple, he still did his other Sadhanas and spent the rest of the time sitting quietly, when he completely retired from his auditing work, not talking to anyone, either looking into the sky or observing the little garden. Fortunately, in their time, there were no mobiles or much TV.
Now, added to air pollution and noise pollution—thanks to the abundance of vehicles everywhere—there is lots of VOICE POLLUTION. People are either talking to someone else or listening to someone talking to them on the mobile or watching YouTube all the time, creating voice pollution. When are they going to understand the need for silence in life?
I am fortunate in this regard. Being single, I live alone in the ashram. Our helpers come just for an hour to work and leave after 10:00. Even for this one hour of work, we pay ten thousand rupees every month. Some say this is too much. Yes, due to labor problems, we have to pay them, and they are very honest people who have been serving us for the past ten years. But I say to others, we are paying this much to avoid being disturbed by more work. In the past, when I lived in Mathigiri, if I came to the ashram to stay for a few days or hours, I used to ask them to leave as soon as they completed the work so that I could stay alone.
Now once they left, until they came the next morning, I was alone, enjoying the SILENCE around me—though my mind wouldn’t remain silent for a long time. At least there is less air pollution and almost no VOICE POLLUTION.
