Before AI and After AI : Part One

We all knew that history was divided as BCE and CE, before and after the common era. But now we have to reckon with a new method—BAI and AAI.

The Impact of AI

Though AI has brought a few comforts—I don’t want to call them blessings—the disaster it has created is mind-blowing, like any other human invention. Leaving all other areas, I want to take one example of ethics in writing to highlight my point. It has almost completely eroded, though AI has its own excuses to brush it under the carpet. Now this has become a serious issue, and several writers time and again raise this issue.

A Personal Experiment

To give an example, let me share what I have done. I asked AI to write a 109-word essay on a waterfall, then I asked it to convert it into an English poem. Then I asked it to translate them into Hindi. It has done everything that I asked. Then I asked the following questions. I will give them in the notes the answers that AI gave for them below. I will share them, including the article and poem that AI wrote for me in Part Two.

Ethical Concerns and Future Implications

This being the AI reality, what would be the future of not only original writing but also the future of the younger generation? Now one can even easily get a Ph.D., asking AI to do all the work. But when he faces a Viva Voce—questioned by a panel of professors to test his originality—it could expose his fraud. Now, considering the present-day [Indian] reality, one can even ‘buy’ them and get a Ph.D. and even become a college professor. Now what kind of students is he going to produce? Of course, he knows that his own students would do the same in submitting any essay but might do badly in examinations. But out of my own practical knowledge, as I have personally witnessed how some parents even managed to get enough marks for their children to pass the examination.

Societal and Sectoral Risks

What kind of nightmare would that kind of society be to live in? What if the same happens in the health sector? I cannot even imagine such a scenario. Though I can console myself that I won’t live that long to see it more experienced in my life. The future does not promise a normal life for anyone to live on this earth.

AI’s Ethical Standpoint

However, before further sharing the answers given by AI, I would like to quote what the AI has said about ‘ethics’ in writing:

Ultimately, AI tools can enhance the writing process, but ethical use and transparency are key to maintaining integrity and originality in writing.

Conclusion

So there is no point in even blaming AI for this. After all, it is nothing but our own creation to complicate our lives more.

A Personal Comparison

After I asked the AI to write that poem about the waterfall, I wrote a short poem in Tamil. I am going to share that in Part Two if you have time and if you happen to read this article [in hindsight I never expect anyone to read my article, but I write for my own need and share it to keep it somewhere from where someone in the future can get them if they are interested in my writings]. See the difference between the poem compiled by AI from its data and my own imagination—a different kind of message in nature [see Part Two]. I am not saying what AI created is less beautiful, but in my understanding, it is more artificial and not original, though AI claims that it cannot be considered plagiarism or a violation of ethics in writing.

Asking AI to write a poem or article for us is what Rumi says, ‘Inklings’.  It is worth quote what Rumi says:

You may learn to imitate a birdcall,

but do you experience

what the nightingale feels for the rose?

You get inklings,

the way deaf people watch lips

and guess at the conversation.— INKLINGS.  Coleman Barks,  The Essential RUMI,  Introduction to the New Expanded Edition, New York,  HarperCollins, 2004, p. 344

As I have quoted Rumi, AI cannot do.  This makes the difference in original creativity and plagiarism.

DB: Write a 109-word article describing the beauty of a waterfall. 1

Wow. Could you please convert this into an English poem? 2

Is it possible for you to translate this article first and then the poem into Hindi?3

Okay. Now I have a question. You have written this article and poem, but I asked you to write them for me. Then who holds the copyright for this?4

But you wrote this based on the data that you have collected from others’ writings. Is it not outright plagiarism?5

Then what about work ethics, I mean in writing? Then those who can’t write even a few words in English can become authentic writers and poets.6

Notes

1 A waterfall is nature’s symphony, a breathtaking spectacle where water cascades gracefully over rocks, creating a mesmerizing display of power and tranquility. Each drop sparkles in the sunlight, forming rainbows that dance in the mist. The rhythmic roar of falling water harmonizes with the rustling leaves and chirping birds, creating a serene and enchanting ambiance. The surrounding lush greenery, often dotted with wildflowers, enhances the scene’s vibrant beauty. As the water descends, it carves out a pool below, reflecting the sky and trees above. Visiting a waterfall offers a refreshing escape, a moment to marvel at nature’s artistry and feel a profound connection to the earth.—by Chatgbt

2 see in Part Two.  Certainly! Here’s the description of the waterfall transformed into an English poem:

3 Sure, here is the translation of both the article and the poem into Hindi. [see Part Two]

4 As the user, you hold the copyright for the article and poem. When you request content creation from me, the generated content is for your use, and you own the rights to it. This means you can use, modify, and distribute the content as you see fit.

5 The content I generate is based on patterns and knowledge derived from a large dataset of texts, but it is created uniquely in response to your request. It is not a direct copy of any specific existing work. Instead, it is an original composition that synthesizes information in a new and unique way.

Therefore, the content provided is not considered plagiarism. You can confidently use the content as your own, since it is generated specifically for you and does not directly copy from any particular source.

6 The use of AI tools in writing raises interesting questions about authorship and work ethics. Here are some points to consider:

a. *Tool vs. Creator*: AI tools are like any other writing aid, such as grammar checkers or thesauruses. They assist the writer but do not replace the need for creativity and judgment. The user decides how to use the generated content, often adding their own ideas and revisions.

b. *Accessibility*: AI tools can democratize writing, allowing those with language barriers or less experience to express their ideas more effectively. This can foster creativity and enable more people to share their stories and thoughts.

c. *Ethical Use*: It is important for users to be transparent about their use of AI, especially in professional or academic settings. Crediting the AI tool or disclosing its use can help maintain ethical standards.

d. *Originality*: While AI can generate content, the originality comes from how it is used. A writer’s unique perspective, style, and ideas still play a crucial role in creating authentic and meaningful work.

Ultimately, AI tools can enhance the writing process, but ethical use and transparency are key to maintaining integrity and originality in writing.
