Mother God

Last night, as I experienced severe back pain again, I retired to bed early at 11:00 PM (my regular bedtime is after midnight). Unable to sleep, I began to talk to the Lord, saying, ‘OK, I am your slave, do whatever you want. Whenever you want to give me sleep, give it.’ But immediately, I said, ‘No, it is not acceptable for me. Better let me come as a child, and then it will become the responsibility of a mother to make the child sleep.’ I began to meditate on this, and as the thought flowed, I recalled that meditation tonight and wrote this song.

For me, there is no greater relationship than that between a mother and her baby. If you ask any mother what the best time in her life is, most will say without hesitation that it is hugging and feeding their baby. The baby, when grown, will forget that experience, but every mother will cherish it for life. As a woman, she might have enjoyed various pleasures, but hugging her baby and feeding it is a bliss she realizes in her soul, and it remains permanently with her.

However, men can never fully understand the beautiful relationship between a mother and her baby. That is why motherhood is the most blessed relationship among all others. Being a slave to a master is always challenging as he has to know the master’s intentions and accomplish them before he tells him. Being a Jew, the Lord will get a double portion from the inheritance as the firstborn. But in India, though some dharmasastras give double portions to the eldest son, the law usually divides property equally among all children. So as an Indian, the Jewish law is neither applicable nor acceptable; I don’t want to be His brother. Even friendship has its limitations. So the best choice for me is to become a child to the Lord and for Him to become my mother.

My only hesitation in such a metaphor is others thinking I have some psychological problem for calling the Lord as a mother. But as I find much comfort in that relationship, I never mind what others think and always write such songs [see. BT Song 1143].

I read some kind of strange interpretation even in this relationship between a mother and baby, particularly a son’s relationship with his mother or his mother’s relationship with his.  But as such strange kind of interpretation of psychology or psychiatry we Indians have our interpretation where a Mother stands not only the first but all in all, including equal to God or sometime more than God.
