BT Song 1456
Though a bhakta has many reasons to lament in her life, when she reflects on her existence on this earth, she finds even more reasons to sing and praise God rather than dwelling on her trials and troubles. Despite enduring the toughest times, when I sit and contemplate the blessings I receive from Him each day, I find more reasons to thank Him than to dwell on temporary trials and troubles.
BT Song 1456 Millions of thanks
Simple English Version:
1
Through many trials
And troubles in life,
When I come to you,
You help me through.
2
You let me
Worship you,
Giving me grace
To sing your praise.
3
Can one think of
All the troubles
From the womb
To the grave?
4
Do we have
Any way to count
All the blessings
You give in life?
5
There are
So many things
In life to
Think negatively.
6
But when I come
To you,
They all turn
Positive.
7
There are so many
Things in the heart
To stay lazy
And lament about life.
8
But, O my Lord,
You have the power
To overcome
Even that.
9
When I think,
Even for a second,
How much
My heart revives.
10
When I drown,
Immersing myself
In that
Blissful state.
11
The life you gave
For me to live on earth,
And the way you made
This world for that.
12
My tongue says
They are indeed good,
As I rejoice
Singing your praise.
13
I came to your feet
To give millions of thanks
For all the blessings
You gave in life.
Gurukulam, 3-12-2022, 2.30 a.m.
BT Song 1456 Millions of thanks
Classical English Version:
1
Through myriad trials
And life’s troubles,
When unto thee I come,
Thou dost succor me.
2
Thou dost grant me
The grace to worship thee,
Allowing me
To sing thy praise.
3
Can one ponder
All the sorrows
From the womb
To the grave?
4
Hast thou any count
Of all the blessings
Thou dost bestow
In this mortal life?
5
There are
Countless things
In life to
Think ill of.
6
Yet when I come
To thee,
They all turn
To joy.
7
Many are the things
In the heart
To stay idle
And lament life’s course.
8
But, O my Lord,
Thou hast the power
To conquer
Even that.
9
When I muse,
Even for a moment,
How much
My heart revives.
10
When I sink,
Immersed in
That
Blissful state.
11
The life thou gavest
For me to live on this earth,
And the world thou created
For that life.
12
My tongue declares
They are indeed good,
As I rejoice
In singing thy praise.
13
I come unto thy feet
To render countless thanks
For all the blessings
Thou hast bestowed in life.
Gurukulam, 3-12-2022, 2.30 a.m.
BT Song 1457
“No” is also an answer to prayers. But when a bhakta feels that God is delaying in giving any kind of answer, she either has to live with frustration or wrestle with God. As I always prefer the latter option, I had another tussle with God, as He delays in providing a proper answer to my present need to take care of my mother.
BT Song 1457 It Is Good If You Give
Simple English Version:
1
When you refuse
To listen to me,
What’s the use
Of telling my needs to you?
2
When you refuse
To give what I asked,
What’s the use
Of asking you more?
3
Remembering all
The promises
You made,
As if you were generous.
4
When I come
To you,
Why do you give
Thousands of excuses?
5
I never came
To you thinking
You would
Make promises.
6
When you gave
When I didn’t ask,
If you refuse to give now,
Is it wrong to question you?
7
Whether you give or refuse,
That’s your choice.
I never denied
Your right.
8
I’m not even worried
When you refuse
To give
Any answer to me.
9
You’ll do
What you think is right.
I always knew
This about you.
10
No matter how much right
You may have,
I too have
My own rights.
11
But is this the
Right time to
Discuss
Our individual rights?
12
If you won’t answer
Even to this,
At least now,
Listen to what I say.
13
Someday,
You’ll show mercy.
At that time,
Please remember me.
14
Till then,
I will remain patient.
At least keep
This in mind.
15
If you give part of
The benefit now in advance,
That would be
A great blessing to me.
Gurukulam, 4-12-2022, 3.30 a.m.
BT Song 1457 It Is Good If You Give
Classical English Version:
1
When thou refusest
To hearken unto me,
What purpose is served
In revealing my needs to thee?
2
When thou deniest
That which I seek,
What purpose lies
In asking thee further?
3
I recall all the promises
That thou hast made,
As if thou wert
A benefactor.
4
When I approach thee,
Why dost thou give
A multitude of excuses?
5
I came not to thee
With the expectation
That thou wouldst
Proffer promises.
6
When thou gavest
Without my asking,
If thou refusest now,
Is it unjust to question thee?
7
Whether thou givest or refusest,
‘Tis thy prerogative.
I have ne’er denied
Thy right.
8
I am untroubled
Even when thou refusest
To provide
Any answer to me.
9
Thou shalt do
What thou deemest correct.
I have always
Known this.
10
Though thou hast
Thine own rights,
I too possess
Mine own.
11
But is this the
Proper moment
To debate
Our individual rights?
12
If thou wilt not respond
Even to this,
At least now,
Hearken to my plea.
13
In some future time,
Thou shalt show mercy.
In that moment,
Remember me.
14
Until then,
I shall remain patient.
At least bear this
In thy mind.
15
If thou bestowest
A part of the benefit
In advance,
It would be
A great blessing to me.

BT Song 1458
As I take care of my mother, I often have to stay up all night to help her get up from bed to use the restroom. Many times, after 3:00 AM, even though I cannot sleep, I lie down in bed. As I lay there, unable to fall asleep and tossing around, I began to think about my present life and the simultaneous challenges and blessings I receive.
I live in a place I like very much—away from all kinds of noise, situated near a forest. There are no artificial sounds, and the climate is excellent almost the entire year, especially in December. I have good books to read with deep subjects, such as “Vedantic Approaches to God” by Eric Lott, Macmillan Press, London, 1980; “The Testimony of C. F. Andrews” by Daniel O’Connor, CLS, Madras, 1974; and “Echoes of Scripture in the Letters of Paul” by Richard B. Hays, Yale University Press, 1989. I enjoy special tea with ginger (or strong filter coffee) and biscuits. I have the opportunity to serve my mother, who deserves it, and to indulge in my favorite hobby of cross-stitching, working on a large carpet using leftover threads from other projects, which might take several years to complete. Above all, I get to practice bhakti to the Lord, who gave me such a wonderful calling to remain as His bhakta—a bliss that even He does not know. Unable to lie down, I got up and went to my study room and wrote this song within five minutes so that others who read this poem would not miss such a call to remain His bhakta, a life I feel I never deserved.
Saint Manikkavasagar, in his Tiruvasagam, talks about a similar experience, where he says: “The human life is indeed a good one on this earth if one can see the arching brows, the gentle smile on your red lips, the flowing matted hair, the holy ash on your body that looks red like coral, and the sweet, gently lifted leg.” (Free translation by me). I share the YouTube video for those who can understand Tamil.

BT Song 1458 You Gave the Call
Simple English Version:
1
I know that
This is my call,
How could I
Ever miss it?
2
When one rarely
Gets this chance,
I enjoy it
Completely each day.
3
You called me
To live in solitude,
Making me sit
At your feet.
4
You shared
A secret with me,
Which no one
Had ever heard before.
5
I know
It’s a great secret,
But I forgot
To understand it fully.
6
Drowning in the bliss
I received,
I completely
Forgot myself.
7
Though many
Practice devotion,
Though they are
Great in their bhakti,
8
You called me,
Who is good for nothing.
What a wonderful chance
You gave to me.
9
When you called me
So near to you,
When you were
So close to me,
10
Whatever secret
You shared,
I couldn’t
Understand them.
11
How could you
Understand this secret,
Since you missed it
By remaining as God?
12
Poor indeed are you,
As you missed this chance
To be a devotee,
To remain in bhakti.
13
When this opportunity
Is available,
I say,
Great indeed is this human birth.
14
Many devotees
Have said the same.
They praised
This divine call.
15
You gave this
Blessed status,
Which remains
Both here and hereafter.
16
You gave me
This chance for bhakti,
And called me
To remain a devotee.
Gurukulam, 4-12-2022, 4.00, a.m.
BT Song 1458 You Gave the Call
Classical English Version:
1
I know this call
Is mine to take,
How could I ever
Miss this fate?
2
When one may chance
Upon this gift,
I relish it wholly
Each passing day.
3
Summoning me
To solitude’s grace,
You made me rest
At your sacred feet.
4
A secret you shared,
Unknown to all,
Never before
Had it been told.
5
I know it is
A secret profound,
But failed I to grasp
Its full depth.
6
In the bliss
I drowned,
And myself
I forgot.
7
Though many pursue
The path of bhakti,
Though they are great
In their devotion,
8
You called me,
Worthless though I be.
What a marvelous chance
You bestowed upon me.
9
When you called me
So near to you,
When you were
So close to me,
10
Whatever secret
You revealed,
I could not
Comprehend it.
11
How can you
Understand this secret,
When you missed it
By being God?
12
Alas, poor you,
Missing this chance
To be a devotee,
To dwell in bhakti.
13
When such a chance
Is at hand,
I declare,
Blessed is this human birth.
14
Many devotees
Have echoed the same,
Praising
This divine call.
15
You bestowed this
Blessed state,
Eternal both
Here and hereafter.
16
You gave this chance
For bhakti’s grace,
And called me
To remain a devotee.

BT Song 1459
A bhakta is a saved sinner but a struggling saint. His call to serve others is the only way she can experience her bhakti in the Lord. As I often say, we don’t have a private God, though we can have a personal relationship. Every religion and most scriptures promote this: “Nar ki seva Narayan ki seva.” Tirumular, in one of his poems, says, “Whatever one offers in the temple won’t reach the needy on the street. But whatever one offers to the needy on the street will reach the deity in the temple.” The Muktiveda clearly states, “Those who cannot love [and serve] those whom they see [or rub shoulders with in everyday life] cannot love [or serve] a God whom they cannot see.” There is no use in giving multiple references from various scriptures. Despite our shortcomings and struggles, when we keep others’ needs in mind and live to serve them in whatever ways we can, that kind of life alone will bring satisfaction. As I often insist, we should even remove the notion that we are living and serving for others but rather with others. Unless others give us the opportunity, we cannot even live for them. Life is full of struggle, but when we struggle with others, we can also live with God in day-to-day life. This life should begin at home first. There is no point in being an angel in the street and a devil in the house.
BT Song 1459 I Will Be Complete
Simple English Version:
1
My nature won’t change,
You know that well.
Please understand
My present situation.
2
Lead me
Accordingly,
Somehow help me
Reach the Further Shore.
3
My life never
Belonged to me,
You never completely
Ruled over it.
4
There are many
Interferences from others,
As their needs
Are also involved.
5
I cannot
Avoid them,
As they need
My service.
6
I never had
Any desire to live for myself,
At the same time,
I cannot live fully for you.
7
But living for others
Is also living for you,
This too
Becomes your duty.
8
I have done
Only that so far,
And you too
Lead me accordingly.
9
You also told me
Clearly
That the rest of my life
Will remain like this.
10
If this alone
Is your will,
I consent
To do accordingly.
11
If your rule
Is in that life,
That is enough for me,
I only say this.
12
Whatever might be
My nature,
As your nature [dharma]
Rules me,
13
If my nature
Remains in you,
I will find
Completeness in that.
Gurukulam, 5-12-2022, 1.30 a.m.
BT Song 1459 I Will Be Complete
Classical English Version:
1
My nature changeth not,
Thou knowest it well.
I pray thee understand
My present plight.
2
Guide me
As thou wilt,
And somehow help me
To reach the Further Shore.
3
My life hath never
Been mine own,
Nor hast thou ever
Fully ruled it.
4
Many interferences
From others there be,
For their needs
Are intertwined with mine.
5
I cannot
Evade them,
As they require
My service.
6
I ne’er had
The desire to live solely for myself,
Yet I cannot
Wholly live for thee.
7
But to live for others
Is also to live for thee,
And this too
Becometh thy duty.
8
Thus far,
I have done only this,
And thou hast led me
Accordingly.
9
Thou hast clearly told me
That the rest of my days
Shall continue
In this wise.
10
If this alone
Be thy will,
I consent
To follow accordingly.
11
If thy rule
Is in that life,
It sufficeth me,
This I declare.
12
Whatever my nature,
As thy nature [dharma]
Ruleth me,
13
If my nature
Abideth in thee,
Therein shall I find
Completeness.

BT Song 1460
This is a recurring theme in my song and life. No matter how I try to bend the will of God in my favor, She will pretend as if She is listening and doing things according to my will. However, by changing the circumstances and making me work accordingly, She will ultimately fulfill Her own will for my life. There is no point in wrestling with God to force Her to conform to our will. Total surrender without reservation (known as parapati, not merely saranagati) is the only option left for a bhakta. Recently, in a satsang with a group, I mentioned that God answers all our prayers, but often She gives a big “NO” to our prayers. Thus, there are no unanswered prayers in a bhakta’s life. In my personal life, I have received “NO” as the answer to 90 percent of my prayers. With no option but to accept it, I continue my journey trusting God.
BT Song 1460 (Simple English) Your Will Be Done
1. How many times
I might think
And however
I might think
2. Only your will
Be accomplished
I tell this
Because of my experience
3. Though I try to impress you
That my suggestion is best
And however I managed
To communicate to you
4. Though you were
Listening to me
Still, the final decision
Will always be yours only
5. Thinking only
About my need
And planning
Accordingly
6. For others also
To accept it
However, I managed
To convince them
7. Allowing me
To go my own way
And making others
To do accordingly
8. You pretended
Many times as if
You were doing
Some favor to me
9. Overruling my need
And always keeping
Others’ needs before you
And planning accordingly
10. Not informing
Well in advance to me
You will accomplish
Through your action
11. Then I become
Upset with you
And argue
Against you
12. Though I cry
With many tears
And try to accomplish
Only my plan
13. When I cool
Down and
After crying
As I settle down
14. With patience
You will make me accept
And help my dull
Intellect to understand
15. Several times in the past
The same happened
Only the same thing
Repeating again
16. And convincing me
By talking like this
You will do only
What is good for me
17. So, however I act
After much thinking
Only your will is
Accomplished in my life
BT Song 1460 (Classical English) Thy Will Be Done
1. How many times
I might muse
And however
I might ponder
2. Only Thy will
Shall be fulfilled
This I declare
From experience learned
3. Though I strive to persuade Thee
That my counsel is best
And however I endeavored
To impart it to Thee
4. Though Thou wast
Attentive to me
Yet, the ultimate decree
Shall always be Thine alone
5. Contemplating solely
On my desires
And scheming
Thereupon
6. For others too
To acquiesce
However, I managed
To sway them
7. Permitting me
To pursue my course
And guiding others
To comply thus
8. Thou didst feign
Oftentimes as if
Thou wert conferring
Some boon upon me
9. Overriding my desires
And always prioritizing
Others’ needs before Thine
And planning accordingly
10. Not forewarning
Me in advance
Thou dost fulfill
Through Thine actions
11. Then I become
Vexed with Thee
And contend
Against Thee
12. Though I weep
With copious tears
And strive to achieve
Only my designs
13. When I calm
Down and
After weeping
As I compose myself
14. With patience
Thou makest me accept
And enlighten my dull
Mind to comprehend
15. Many times afore
The same occurred
Only the same
Repetition anew
16. And convincing me
Through such discourse
Thou doest solely
What is best for me
17. So, however I act
After much deliberation
Only Thy will
Is fulfilled in my life

1
எத்தனை முறையே
எண்ணிய போதும்
எத்தனை வகையில்
யோசித்த போதும்
2
சித்தம் உனது
மட்டுமே நடக்கும்
பட்ட அறிவால்
நானுமே சொன்னேன்
3
எனது யோசனை
நல்லதே என்று
எப்படி உன்னிடம்
எடுத்துரைத்தாலும்
4
என்னதான் நீயும்
கேட்டுக் கொண்டாலும்
இறுதி முடிவு
உனதாய் இருக்கும்
5
என் தேவையதை
நானும் எண்ணி
அதற்கு ஏற்ப
யோசனைப் பண்ணி
6
பிறரும் அதையே
ஏற்றிட வேண்டி
பக்குவமாய் நான்
எடுத்து சொல்லியும்
7
10
முன்பாக என்னிடம்
எதையும் சொல்லாமல்
செயலிலே செய்து
நீயும் காட்டுவாய்
11
அப்போது உன்மீது
கோபமும் கொண்டு
உனக்கு எதிராய்
வாதங்கள் செய்து
12
கண்ணீர் சிந்தி
கதறியே அழுதாலும்
காரியம் சாதிக்க
நானும் முயன்றாலும்
13
கோபமும் குறைய
ஆத்திரம் அடங்க
கதறி அழுது
கத்தி தீர்த்தபின்
14
பொறுமையாய் எனக்கு
எடுத்துக் கூறி
மந்த புத்திக்கும்
புரிய வைத்து
15
இதுபோல் முன்பு
பலமுறை நடந்தது
இப்போதும் அதுதான்
மீண்டும் நடக்குது
16
என்று சொல்லி
இசைய வைத்து
ஏற்றதை மட்டும்
நீயும் செய்வாய்
17
ஆகவே எப்படி
எண்ணி செய்தாலும்
உன்செயல் மட்டுமே
எப்போதும் நடக்குது
