BT Songs 1511 to 1515

BT Song 1511

Transcending all the senses and tuning inward, we can hear the gentle voice of Him, who comes into our lives in the way we desire. For me, He comes as a guru. To achieve this, we need to delve deep within ourselves and even transcend our own limitations to be with Him.

BT Song 1511 I Heard Your Voice

Simple English

Crossing all boundaries,

Crossing even myself,

How did you

Come into me?                 1

Without sensing you

Within me,

I searched everywhere

Wandering day by day.                2

To know you, who were hidden,

I sought the help of

Secrets and mysteries,

I also tried.              3

Along with that,

I also listened to

The teachings of wise and

Elderly scholars.                4

Even this was not enough,

Thinking it would never be,

I ran to temples,

Searching in many ways.             5

Even if it was fasting or rituals,

Whatever was said,

I did it willingly

With devotion.                   6

Yet, none of these

Methods or reasons

Could reach you

When I was bewildered.               7

A subtle sound

Resonated from within,

Calling me

In silence.               8

Not knowing whose voice it was,

I stopped my senses and mind

When I realized

It was calling me.              9

Realizing it was you calling,

In my soul,

I stood still

Like a statue.          10

Sensory perceptions

Hide within the mind,

Both mind and faith

Approach the soul.            11

There, I heard

Your voice

And then I stopped

My search.              12

Within me,

Searching for you,

Crossing all boundaries,

I ran and found you.          13

After realizing,

The boundaries vanished,

I reached you,

Surpassing even myself.              14

BT Song 1511 I Heard Thy Voice

Classical English

Transcending all limits,

And surpassing even my own self,

How didst thou

Come within me?              1

Without perceiving thee

Within myself,

I searched in various places

Wandering daily.               2

To understand thee, who was concealed,

I sought the aid of

Mysteries and their secrets,

And endeavored likewise.            3

Moreover,

I heeded the wise and

Esteemed scholars’

Teachings and precepts.             4

Yet this was insufficient,

Thinking it would forever be so,

I traversed to temples,

In various searches.          5

Be it fasting or rituals,

Whatever was prescribed,

I performed it with devotion

And earnestness.              6

Nevertheless, none of these

Methods or reasons

Could lead me to thee

In my state of confusion.              7

A faint sound

Echoed from within,

Calling me

In silence.               8

Uncertain of the source of this call,

I ceased my senses and intellect

Upon realizing

It was thee who called.                9

Recognizing that it was thou

Calling from my soul,

I remained motionless

As a statue.            10

Senses and perceptions

Retreat within the mind,

Both mind and faith

Approach the soul.            11

Therein, I discerned

Thy voice,

And thereafter ceased

My quest.                12

Searching for thee within myself,

Transcending all boundaries,

I found thee

By surpassing even my own self.           13

Upon realization,

The boundaries vanished,

I reached thee,

Surpassing my own limitations.              14

BT Song 1512

Upon reading the following words by Fr. Bede Griffiths, I paused and reflected on my own situation, which is quite similar to what he described. This inspired me to write this song:

“I am certainly going through very deep psychological experiences and I am often bewildered by them, but one cannot put them on paper.”—11-2-1962. Adrian B. Rance: Falling in Love with India: From the Letters of Bede Griffiths, Thannipalli, Saccidananda Ashram, year not mentioned, p. 386

BT Song 1512 Why Did You Change?

Simple English

Why did you come to me

Saying one thing,

And now behave

In this manner?                 1

Saying one thing

And doing another—

Is this what

Makes you beautiful?                   2

What you said

I can recount,

But now, I only

Understand what you do.             3

If you say

I am the reason for this,

How will I

Also accept it?                  4

Why do you

Wear a guise

Fit for others

For my sake?                    5

If you must

Change often

And always

Don a different mask,                  6

Each moment

The mind changes,

And always,

The faith remains unstable.                    7

Always shifting

And frequently changing

The state of things

Leaves me confused.                  8

If you too

Change according to this,

What will happen

To my situation?                9

If you, who are unchanging,

Change and come,

What will be

The use of changing for me?                  10

Whatever happens,

Let it happen,

Thinking so,

I have stood still.               11

Realizing that you

Change for me

And also change

Me in the process,             12

Therefore, from now on,

Whatever you do,

I will not

Question why.                   13

One day,

I trusted that

You would do

What you said.                  14

BT Song 1512 Why Hast Thou Changed?

Classical English

Why didst thou come to me

Proclaiming one thing,

And now dost thou

Act in this manner?            1

To speak one thing

And to perform another—

Is this what

Endows thee with grace?             2

What thou didst say

I can recount,

But now, I perceive

Only what thou dost do.               3

If I were to declare

The cause of this,

How shall I

Also accept it?                  4

Why dost thou

Assume a guise

Fit for others

For my sake?                    5

If thou must

Change frequently

And perpetually

Wear a different mask,                6

Each moment

The mind doth alter,

And evermore,

Faith remains unstable.               7

Ever shifting

And frequently changing,

The state of affairs

Leaves me in perplexity.              8

Shouldst thou also

Change accordingly,

What will become

Of my own condition?                  9

If thou, who art unchanging,

Shouldst come altered,

What shall be

The benefit of my own change?              10

Let whatever will occur,

Occur as it may,

Thinking thus,

I have remained steadfast.           11

Understanding that thou

Alterest for me

And in turn,

Change me as well,           12

Henceforth, whatever thou

Dost undertake,

I shall not

Ask why.                 13

Believing that one day

Thou wouldst fulfill

What thou hadst spoken,

I entrusted myself to thee.            14

 BT Song 1513

…Now my mind seems to be expanding and I feel that the repression is being dispelled. I find that I must do without any images – the image of Christ is a great obstacle. The only way I can find out is to consider that on the cross Christ died to this world and disappeared. After the resurrection, he no longer belongs to this world. We have to pass out with him to the Father, to lose ourselves completely. I can only think of God as Nothing and myself as nothing. Do you remember that Augustine Baker described the mystical union as the union ‘of the nothing with the nothing’? This seems to be exactly true. (p. 418) -7-11-1966. Adrian B. Rance: Falling in Love with India: From the Letters of Bede Griffiths, Thannipalli, Saccidananda Ashram, year not mentioned. Pp. 417-18

This is the closing theological remark of Fr. Griffith in his long correspondence with Mrs. Micheline Rance. After reading this, I wrote at the end of these words, ‘Yes. I agree with this.’

This may come as a surprise to many with the question, ‘Then do you not believe in God?’

The question about God always remains a mystery for me, even before I became a bhakta of the Lord. Coming from the advaitic tradition, my understanding of God somehow remained close to that tradition, though in my normal life I try to live as a normal bhakta of gods. However, deep within me, when I began to ask questions about my imperfection, I realized that I cannot get the answer by starting with God but with myself: ‘Why do I need a God; if at all there is any G O D (English word)?’

Then I realized that what I needed was a guru, and I happily found him in Mukti Nath. He became everything in my life—even as a God, though I prefer Him to remain a guru to me all the time. All the concepts of God, something or someone beyond us, never appealed to me. Of course, I strongly believe in a supernatural energy that sustains this universe. We can call it COSMIC ENERGY. But as human beings, we cannot relate to that Cosmic Energy as mere Shakti outside us or within us, but only as a Person. Then the concept of a Personal God could have developed.

But when I found my guru, I was happy to relate to Him not as a God either beyond me or within me, but living along with me. Not leading me from behind or showing the way by going in front or standing in one place like a signpost, showing the way for me to walk, but coming along with me in every form according to my need: as a Mother, Father, brother, friend, companion, and even as a servant.

So though I won’t use the exact words of Fr. Griffith, I am still happy with my guru who helped me to experience life while living in this mortal body without worrying much about the life beyond. As I often insist, for me, mukti is not going to some heaven after death but experiencing it while living in this very body on this earth. As I meditated on this line, I wrote this song expressing my thoughts in a limited way, paving the way for many questions that need to be addressed in a separate article.

After this, when I further meditated on this, I wrote the following words:

If there is any God; let Him be like my guru

If I need any God; let Him decide that too

At present my guru is enough for me

As He walks along with me in my journey.

BT Song 1513 Why Search?

Simple English

You appeared and vanished,

Went far away,

I too

Thought so.            1

What need do you have

To appear?

If it were to be

Within before.                   2

No chance of going far,

When boundaries

Are not present for you.               3

How can something

That does not vanish

Appear?

Why search for what does not fade?                 4

Nevertheless, the mysteries

Speak thus,

Therefore, people

Also believe in it.               5

Transcending mysteries,

Transcending religions,

Transcending the mind,

I went beyond.                  6

In you, I found

Myself,

In myself, I found

You, without separation.              7

Without me, you have

No place,

Without you, I have

No refuge.              8

Nevertheless,

There is no chance

To speak of it,

Not even a language for it.           9

In the life of the body,

I knew you,

In the life of the soul,

I realized that too.             10

The body will end,

The soul will vanish,

What remains

After that, who knows?                11

In the known life,

Blending with you,

In continuous life,

I will think of you with devotion.              12

Appearance, disappearance,

Near and far,

Such distinctions,

I will live today.                  13

BT Song 1513 Why Must One Search?

Classical English

Thou didst appear and then

Vanish, journeying afar;

Thus did I also

Reflect in my thoughts.                1

What need have thee

To manifest?

If it were to be

Existing within beforehand.          2

There is no chance of going

Far away,

When boundaries

Are absent for thee.           3

How can that which

Is imperishable

Ever appear?

Why seek what cannot be lost?              4

Yet, the mysteries

Speak thus,

And so, humanity

Also places its faith therein.                   5

Transcending mysteries,

Transcending religions,

Transcending the mind,

I journeyed beyond.           6

Within thee, I discovered

My own self;

Within myself, I found

Thou, in a state of unity.              7

Without me, thou hast

No abode;

Without thee, I have

No refuge.              8

Nevertheless,

There is no opportunity

To speak of it;

No language for its expression.              9

In the life of the body,

I came to know thee;

In the life of the soul,

I apprehended that as well.                    10

The body will come to an end,

The soul will fade away;

What remains thereafter,

Who can know?                11

In the realm of the known,

Blending with thee,

In the course of existence,

I shall remember thee with devotion.                12

Appearance and disappearance,

Near and far,

Such distinctions,

I shall live today.               13

BT Song 1514

After finishing all my reading and other activities, I sat quietly, unsure of what to do or think. I began to speak to the Lord, asking for one thing: that He fulfill the needs of my heart and mind, which I struggle to satisfy. As I continued this conversation with Him, I wrote this song as my prayer.

BT Song 1514 It Is Good to Give

Simple English

I came seeking,

I asked willingly,

For something else

I did not desire.                 1

There are many needs,

Plenty of them,

I also have needs

To ask for.              2

For each one,

I have expressed,

Even if it is given, a small part

Cannot be fulfilled.             3

Physical needs

Are somewhat limited,

I can seek and

Fulfill them myself.            4

However, when it comes to mental needs,

The quantity is not sufficient,

And this is indeed true.                5

Unlike physical needs,

Mental needs are boundless;

To fulfill them,

No one else can.               6

I do not understand

The reason for this;

Do you understand

The cause of the mind’s craving?           7

Do not tell me

About it,

For I do not

Comprehend it.                 8

Yet, because my mind

Is with me,

It is not easy to

Escape it.               9

Everything cannot be

Fulfilled for this,

Hence, the struggle

Continues with it.               10

Clinging to duality,

Suffering like an ant,

I cannot find liberation

From you.               11

If something is done,

And taken further,

I too desire liberation

From you.               12

If you fill

My heart completely,

I will find

Refuge only in you.           13

Without any other needs,

There will be no more

Desires or requirements

In the future.           14

This is what I sought

And have come now;

I do not wish

To ask for anything else.              15

It is good to give;

Please help me,

If you refuse,

Where else can I go?                   16

BT Song 1514 It Is Good to Give

Classical English

I have come seeking,

And asked with earnest desire,

For something other

I did not require.                1

There are numerous needs,

Abundant indeed,

And I too possess

Needs to request.              2

For each and every one,

I have expressed,

Even if granted, a small portion

Cannot be fulfilled.             3

The needs of the body

Are somewhat limited;

I can seek and

Fulfill them myself.            4

However, when it comes to the needs of the mind,

The quantity is never sufficient;

This too is a truth

That must be acknowledged.                  5

Unlike bodily needs,

The needs of the mind are boundless;

To satisfy them,

None else can do so.                   6

I cannot comprehend

The reason for this;

Do you understand

The cause of the mind’s yearning?                   7

Do not speak to me

Of this matter,

For I cannot

Grasp its meaning.            8

Nevertheless, as my mind

Is within me,

It is not so easy

To escape from it.             9

It is not possible

To fulfill everything

For this reason;

Thus, the struggle continues.                 10

Clinging to duality,

Suffering like an ant,

I cannot find liberation

Through thee alone.          11

If something is done,

And elevated,

I too seek liberation

From thee.              12

If thou fillest

My heart completely,

I shall find

Refuge solely in thee.                  13

Without any other needs,

No further desires

Shall remain

In the future.           14

This is what I sought

And have come now;

I wish not

To ask for anything else.              15

It is good to give;

Kindly assist me,

If thou refusest,

Where shall I go?              16

BT Song 1515

…We did not belong anywhere. That was part of our misery, whether we liked it or not, we were uprooted like the rest of the world, and wherever we went we could not escape ourselves.—Bede Griffiths, The Golden String, Thannirpalli, Saccidananda Ashram, (1976)

When I first read this, I wrote, “True,” and wrote this song echoing the same sentiment. But I was not happy with what I wrote. So when I went for my evening walk, as I continued to meditate on this subject, I realized that I live by my principle: One day at a time. So wherever I go, though initially I struggle a bit, I easily integrate into the environment and with people without much hesitation. So I never felt that I never belonged anywhere. Of course, several times the sense came that I am not happy with life on this earth. At the same time, I accept it as a gift and try my best to enjoy each moment of life. Then the last two stanzas came as inspiration, and when I returned to my room, I wrote them with much satisfaction, echoing the lines of an ancient Tamil Sangam poem: Puranaanuru (192) Yadum Vure; yaavarum kelir (Every city is your city. Everyone is your kin.).

I heard that even this line was engraved in front of the United Nations building.  But I don’t agree with the present interpretation on these lines in Sangam Tamil poem.  See: https://dayanandbharati.in/universalhood-and-tamilians/

BT Song 1515  Everyone is mine

 Simple English Translation:

Wherever I go

This is my place

The thought that

Rises within me                 1

Whether the place

Is a home or a residence

The thought of

Not being mine comes                 2

Searching for something

I wander every day

Not knowing what it is

Or how to explain it           3

Like a child lost

In a crowd

I search

Standing alone                  4

Have I gone missing

Or has someone else lost me?

I don’t understand

When I am confused                   5

Some people came

And said I was theirs

But after getting close

They said I was not theirs            6

Did someone

Intentionally make me lost

Leaving me in the crowd

And then going away?                 7

In the crowd

My hand slipped away

Did I get separated

And come away alone?                8

Even that

I don’t understand

As a child

In a state of confusion                 9

Until the time

When others join me

I too will remain

Alone till then                    10

Even so, I don’t know

What it is

How to understand

Or even recognize it          11

Unable to search

Without anyone’s help

I lost myself

From myself            12

After I lost myself

All life

I came to understand

Even then               13

Wherever and however

I live with others

Every place

I felt it was mine                14

BT Song 1515 All are mine

Classical English

Wherever I may journey

This place is indeed my abode

The very thought of it

Rises within my soul                    1

Whether it be a dwelling

Or merely a residence

The notion that

It is not mine returns                    2

In my ceaseless quest

I wander every day

Uncertain of what it is

Or how to articulate it                   3

Like a child lost

In a multitude

I search

Standing in solitude           4

Have I been lost

Or have others misplaced me?

Such is the confusion

When I am in distress                  5

Some came to me

Claiming me as their own

But after drawing near

They declared I was not theirs               6

Did someone, indeed

Deliberately make me lost

By abandoning me in the throng

And departing thereafter?            7

In the throng

My hand itself slipped away

Did I separate

And come away alone?                8

Even this

Remains beyond comprehension

As a child

In a state of confusion                 9

Until the time

When others join me

I shall remain

Alone until then                 10

Even so, I am unsure

Of what it is

How to discern it

Or comprehend its nature            11

Unable to seek

Without the aid of others

I lost myself

From my own self              12

After losing myself

I perceived all life

Even in its essence

Though I understood it not           13

Wherever and however

I may dwell with others

Every place

Felt as my own                  14

BT Song 1515
