Baba Kalam

After Mahatma Gandhiji, the Indian I hold in highest regard is Baba Kalam. Although he is commonly referred to as Dr. Kalam, I prefer the term Baba Kalam, as it reflects his embodiment of both Jana and karma in his bhakti to the nation, akin to a sannyasi. Remarkably, he never descended into the realm of politics himself, though he adeptly navigated political challenges, such as during Sonia Gandhi’s bid for the Prime Ministership.

During an interview with Dr. Pranab Roy on NDTV, while Baba Kalam was addressing students at Rashtrapati Bhavan, Dr. Roy posed the question, “Should the President be a politician or a non-politician?” Baba Kalam astutely replied, “That is a political question.”

Regardless of where his mortal remains are laid to rest [at Remewswaram where he born], the presidency of India will forever be marked by the era before and after Baba Kalam. To honor his immense contribution, I believe a statue of him should be placed in front of Rashtrapati Bhavan, permanently adding dignity to that esteemed building.

He lived a life of nobility and passed away in a noble manner, continuing his dharma of inspiring the youth.
