BT Song 1561
Another poem of viraha bhakti. I wrote this poem on two different days. When I can’t complete a poem, I leave it half done, realizing that the inspiration has suddenly stopped. This has happened several times, resulting in many incomplete poems. Later, when I revisit them, if the inspiration returns, I complete them, trying to continue with the same theme. However, sometimes I begin with one thought and end up with another as my reflection on the subject changes.
BT Song 1561 Should know the calm
Simple English
Stanza 1
If I stay calm,
You make me feel different.
If I ask “why,”
You stay silent.
Stanza 2
If I ask:
Why are you
Teasing me for no reason?
What’s on your mind?
Stanza 3
You charm me
With your mesmerizing smile,
And you make me
Want to seek you again.
Stanza 4
If I try to leave, thinking
I’ve had enough of your troubles,
You stop me
From going away.
Stanza 5
I came to you,
Condemned by the world
And rejected
By my relatives.
Stanza 6
When I came
Like this,
You provoke me
By teasing me like this.
Stanza 7
Why are you
Behaving like this?
Why this drama?
I can’t understand.
Stanza 8
Even after knowing well
Why I came to you,
You give me pleasant
Yet unnecessary troubles.
Stanza 9
I should come
To your feet,
And stay there,
Forgetting myself.
Stanza 10
I should remain
Calm and peaceful,
Not listening to
The constant noise of the world.
Stanza 11
I should lose myself
Completely in that silence,
Deep within
My heart.
Stanza 12
When I came
To you,
Seeking this kind of
Calm and rest,
Stanza 13
You should
Bestow more of your grace,
Not making me think
Or talk like this.
Gurukulam, 14-1-24, 11.15 pm.
BT Song 1561 Should know the calm
Classical English
Stanza 1
If I in stillness remain,
Thou dost alter my state.
If I inquire “Why,”
Thou dost remain silent.
Stanza 2
Should I question:
Why dost thou
Needlessly provoke me?
What thoughts dost thou harbor?
Stanza 3
With thy enchanting smile
Thou dost bewitch me,
And compel me
To seek thee anew.
Stanza 4
If I endeavor to depart, believing
I’ve endured enough of thy trials,
Thou dost forbid me
To take leave.
Stanza 5
To thee I came,
Condemned by the world,
And forsaken
By kinsfolk.
Stanza 6
Thus did I arrive,
And thou dost incite me
By thy provocation,
Teasing me so.
Stanza 7
Why dost thou
Conduct thyself thus?
Why this charade?
I cannot comprehend.
Stanza 8
Though well aware
Of my reasons for coming,
Thou dost bestow upon me
Pleasant yet needless troubles.
Stanza 9
To thy feet
I should repair,
There to abide,
Forgetting my own self.
Stanza 10
In tranquility and peace
I ought to remain,
Heeding not
The incessant clamor of the world.
Stanza 11
In that profound silence
I should lose myself,
Deep within
My heart.
Stanza 12
To thee I came,
Seeking such
Serenity and repose,
Stanza 13
Thou shouldst
Grant more of thy grace,
Not stirring my thoughts
To speak thus.
Gurukulam, 14-1-24, 11.15 pm.
BT Song 1562
After retiring to bed, unable to sleep, I began to think about some changes I want to bring to my life. I want to spend more quiet time with the Lord. To do this, I should reduce my time with gadgets, the internet, reading, and writing. But I never make new resolutions, as I know how rarely one can stick with them to bring drastic changes to their life. It takes time. Then I thought, “Why should I read more, think more, and write more? Why can’t I live my life hidden from everyone, at least for a while?” As I continued to reflect on this topic, inspiration came, and I recorded the first few lines on my mobile. I completed this poem in the evening, having spent the day with less engagement with gadgets, the internet, and reading.
BT Song 1562 Should remain hidden
Simple English
Stanza 1
No one should know
Anything about me.
I don’t need to tell
Anything to anyone.
Stanza 2
It’s enough
If my heart realizes
The relationship
Between us.
Stanza 3
Both my heart
And body melt in you,
Along with them,
The soul also joins.
Stanza 4
If I stay permanently
In this bliss,
You occupy my mind
And mingle in my thoughts.
Stanza 5
Can the world know
Or the intellect understand
What truly is
Spirituality?
Stanza 6
Going beyond all Scriptures,
And going beyond all religions,
And going beyond
All human explanations.
Stanza 7
I understood that
Divine relationship,
As you live with me
Every single second.
Stanza 8
Whatever I do,
Whether sitting
Or standing
Or walking.
Stanza 9
Or if I sit at your feet,
Thinking of you alone
And praising you
With a melted heart.
Stanza 10
Whatever I might be doing,
Doing everything only for you,
Is indeed
True spirituality.
Stanza 11
If you bestow your grace
For me to have
The same kind of life each day,
That is enough; what else do I need?
Gurukulam, 15-1-24, 5.15 pm.
BT Song 1562 Should remain hidden
Classical English
Stanza 1
Let no one know
Aught concerning me.
I need not disclose
Anything to anyone.
Stanza 2
Suffice it
If my heart perceives
The bond
Betwixt us.
Stanza 3
My heart and body,
In thee do they dissolve,
And with them,
The soul doth join.
Stanza 4
If in this bliss
I eternally remain,
Thou dost inhabit my mind
And blend with my thoughts.
Stanza 5
Can the world discern,
Or intellect fathom,
What true
Spirituality is?
Stanza 6
Surpassing all Scriptures,
Transcending all faiths,
Exceeding
Human explications.
Stanza 7
I have grasped
That divine connection,
As thou dost dwell with me
Every moment.
Stanza 8
Be it in any deed,
Whether sitting,
Standing,
Or walking.
Stanza 9
Or if I repose at thy feet,
Meditating upon thee alone,
And extolling thee
With a heart that melts.
Stanza 10
In whatever task,
Performing all for thee alone,
This indeed is
True spirituality.
Stanza 11
If thou bestow thy grace
For me to live thus
Each day,
That suffices; what more do I need?
Gurukulam, 15-1-24, 5.15 pm.
BT Song 1563
After reading from the Muktiveda (Matt 12), I closed the book. But I was struck by verse 12:50, where the Lord claims those who do His will as His relatives. Although I continued to read, that thought kept reflecting in my mind, preventing me from concentrating. I immediately wrote this song.
BT Song 1563 What actually happened
Simple English
Stanza 1
You said that
Whoever does your will
Is alone
Your relative.
Stanza 2
Thinking this,
Am I not doing the same?
I ran to you
To have that relationship.
Stanza 3
But as you remained
Indifferent, thinking
As if someone
Had come to you.
Stanza 4
What kind of
Cruelty is this?
Why so harsh,
And I stood shocked.
Stanza 5
Thinking someone
More important than me
Had come and
Was enjoying your relationship.
Stanza 6
Though I waited
With much patience,
You didn’t turn back
To see me even once.
Stanza 7
On one side,
I was upset,
And on the other side,
I was tormented.
Stanza 8
Further delay
Would cause only
Great personal
Loss to me.
Stanza 9
I came to you
Even without your permission,
And when I saw what was happening,
I was very bewildered.
Stanza 10
You were rejoicing
With me, smiling,
And we both were
Having a very pleasant time together.
Stanza 11
Surprised to see
Someone like me with you,
When I asked her,
“Who are you?”
Stanza 12
“How could you come,
Seeking Him who
Always remains with you,
Never separated?
Stanza 13
How are you
Going to realize this,
As you always
Walk with a double mind?
Stanza 14
I have lost my will
Completely in Him,
Without needing to know
His will for me.
Stanza 15
As I always remain
His own,
Why should I come again to Him,
Seeking after Him?”
Stanza 16
By telling this,
When she disappeared within me,
I realized
My real situation.
Stanza 17
Then what
Happened there
Is impossible
To tell.
Stanza 18
As the “I” had
Completely gone,
I couldn’t understand
What actually happened there.
Stanza 19
And there is no need
To share
What happened between
Me and Him.
Gurukulam, 15-1-24, 11.15 pm.
BT Song 1563 What actually happened
Classical English
Stanza 1
Thou hast said
Whoever doeth thy will
Alone is
Thy kin.
Stanza 2
Pondering this,
Am I not doing the same?
To thee I hastened
To gain that bond.
Stanza 3
Yet thou remained
Indifferent, as though
One unknown
Had approached thee.
Stanza 4
What manner of
Cruelty is this?
Why so severe,
And I stood aghast.
Stanza 5
Thinking some
More favored than I
Had arrived and
Enjoyed thy company.
Stanza 6
Though I awaited
With great patience,
Thou didst not
Turn to behold me.
Stanza 7
One side brought
Upset,
And the other side
Torment.
Stanza 8
Further delay
Would cause naught but
Great personal
Loss to me.
Stanza 9
To thee I came
Without permission,
And when I witnessed the scene,
I was much bewildered.
Stanza 10
Thou didst rejoice
With me, smiling,
And we both did share
A most pleasant time.
Stanza 11
Surprised to see
Another like myself with thee,
I inquired of her,
“Who art thou?”
Stanza 12
“How couldst thou come,
Seeking Him who
Ever abides with thee,
Never apart?
Stanza 13
How shalt thou
Comprehend this,
As thou ever
Walkest with a double mind?
Stanza 14
I have surrendered my will
Completely in Him,
Without need to know
His will for me.
Stanza 15
As I ever remain
His own,
Why should I come again to Him,
Seeking after Him?”
Stanza 16
Thus speaking,
When she vanished within me,
I discerned
My true condition.
Stanza 17
Then what
Transpired there
Is beyond
Expression.
Stanza 18
As the “I” had
Fully departed,
I could not grasp
What truly transpired there.
Stanza 19
And there is no need
To recount
What occurred between
Me and Him.
Gurukulam, 15-1-24, 11.15 pm.
BT Song 1564
After reading some comments and a song, I was unable to read further. I put the book aside and sat quietly, immersing myself in Rumi’s thoughts. Rumi said, “My poems have kept me in myself; I surrender back.” (p.119). I was also impressed by the comment that, “Rumi says, we’ve been walking in the surf holding our robes up when we should be diving naked under, and deeper under.” (p.118). I realized that although Rumi tried to surrender his greatest gift back to God, he continued to write, unable to resist the inspiration given by God. The result is this song. But to understand it, first read this:
On Flirtation:
….Some surfs have seen the beauties of art as something that can slow down soul growth. Art gives a teasing taste of surrender without the full experience. Beautiful poetry can keep one on the verge of the oceanic annihilation in God. Rumi says, we’ve been walking in the surf holding our robes up, when we should diving naked under, and deeper under. (10, Art as Flirtation with Surrender: Wanting New Silk Harp Strings, Coleman Barks, op. cit., p. 118,)
Omar and the Old Poet
The harper had grown old. His voice was choked sounding
and harsh, and some of his harp strings were broken.
He went to the graveyard at Medina and wept. “Lord,
you’ve always accepted counterfeit coins from me!
Take these prayers again, and give me enough
to buy new silk strings for my harp.”
He put the harp down for a pillow and went to sleep.
The bird of his soul escaped! Free of the body
and the grieving, flying in a vast simple region
that was itself, where it could sing its truth.
“I love this having no head, this tasting without mouth,
this memory without regret, how without hands I gather (p.118)
rose and basil on an infinitely stretching-out plain
that is my joy.” So this waterbird plunged into its ocean,
….
… …. … “These songs, breath by breath,
have kept me minding the musical modes of Iraq
and the rhythms of Persia, The minor zirafgand,
the liquid freshness of the twenty-four melodies,
these have distracted me while caravan after caravan
was leaving! My poems have kept me in my self,
which was the greatest gift to me, that now
I surrender back.” (p.119)
Don’t be a searcher wrapped in the importance of his quest.
Repent of your repenting!” The old man’s heart
woke, no longer in love with treble
and bass, without weeping
or laughter. In the true bewilderment of the soul
he went out beyond any seeking, beyond words
and telling drowned in the beauty,
drowned beyond deliverance.
Waves cover the old man.
Nothing more can be said of him.
He has shaken out his robe,
and there’s nothing in it anymore.
There is a chase where a falcon dives into the forest
and doesn’t come back up. Every moment,
the sunlight is totally empty
and totally full.—Coleman Barks, op. pp. 118-120
BT Song 1564 I don’t want freedom
Simple English
Stanza 1
Nothing can be conveyed
Through reading and writing
When I cannot experience you
Deep within me.
Stanza 2
No matter how much I write,
It’s all useless
When I fail to go
Beyond the writings.
Stanza 3
Forgetting myself, losing myself
Completely in you,
Just as I lost myself
In my own writings.
Stanza 4
As I lost myself
In my own writings,
I also lost you
Within me.
Stanza 5
But what cannot be lost
Dwells in the heart,
What cannot be understood
Is in the mind.
Stanza 6
Therefore, no matter how many songs
I might write and sing,
They are all useless,
None of them matter.
Stanza 7
At the same time,
I cannot stop writing,
And I am not
Responsible for it.
Stanza 8
You occupy my mind
And dwell in my heart,
You alone force me to write,
And I have no other choice.
Stanza 9
What is the need
To cover myself
When completely drenched
In rain?
Stanza 10
Once I drowned in you
And disappeared,
What is the need
For me to walk on the surface?
Stanza 11
I removed all my clothes
That were wet,
And keep drenching myself
In you again and again.
Stanza 12
Without any thought
Of freedom,
I put myself completely
In your prison.
Stanza 13
I don’t want freedom,
I want to stay
Lost in you,
Always.
Gurukulam, 15-1-24, 11.55 pm.
BT Song 1564 I don’t want freedom
Classical English
Stanza 1
Naught can be conveyed
Through reading and writings,
When I cannot feel thee
Deep within me.
Stanza 2
Howsoever much I write,
No benefit lies therein
When I fail to transcend
The written word.
Stanza 3
Forgetting myself, losing myself
Utterly in thee,
As I have lost myself
In mine own writings.
Stanza 4
As I lost myself
In mine own writings,
So too did I lose thee
Within me.
Stanza 5
Yet, that which cannot be lost
Abides in the heart,
What remains unfathomable
Resides in the mind.
Stanza 6
Therefore, howsoever many songs
I might pen and sing,
They avail naught,
None hold worth.
Stanza 7
Simultaneously,
I cannot cease writing,
And bear no responsibility
For this compulsion.
Stanza 8
Thou dost occupy my mind
And dwell in my heart,
Thou alone dost compel me to write,
And I have no recourse.
Stanza 9
What need have I
For covering,
When fully soaked
By rain?
Stanza 10
Once I drowned in thee
And vanished,
What need have I
To walk upon the surface?
Stanza 11
I discarded all my garments
That were drenched,
And immerse myself anew
In thee, ceaselessly.
Stanza 12
Harboring no thought
Of liberty,
I surrender myself entirely
To thy confinement.
Stanza 13
I desire not freedom,
I wish to remain
Lost in thee,
Forever.
Gurukulam, 15-1-24, 11.55 pm.
BT Song 1565
One important thing to note in Rumi’s poems is that he tells small stories to highlight his points. I like this. He creates curiosity to know the end of the story, though short, making us laugh, weep, and delve deep within ourselves. This song inspired and challenged me to convey it in my own words in Tamil. At first, I thought, “Let it be what it is; why should I try to translate it?” Then I realized that reading it only in English, I was still missing the original spirit in which it was written (or recorded by his disciple). So I decided to put it in my own words, where I could feel the original, if not completely, at least in my own language. The result is this poem:
First Rumi:
The Prophet said, “There are some who see me
by the same light in which I am seeing them.
Our natures are one.
…
The Chinese and the Greeks
Were arguing as to who were the better artists.
The king said,
“We’ll settle this matter with a debate.”
The Chinese began talking,
but the Greek wouldn’t say anything.
They left.
The Chinese suggested then
that they each be given room to work on
with their artistry, two rooms facing each other
and divided by a curtain.
The Chinese asked the king
for a hundred colors, all the variations,
and each morning they came to where
the dyes were kept and took them all.
The Greeks took no colors.
“They’re not part of our work.”
They went to their room
and began cleaning and polishing the walls. All day
every day they made those walls as pure and clear
as an open sky.
There is a way that leads from all-colors
to colorlessness. Know that the magnificent variety
of the clouds and the weather comes from
the total simplicity of the sun and the moon.
The Chinese finished, and they were so happy.
They beat the drums in the joy of completion. (p.121)
The king entered their room
astonished by the gorgeous color and detail.
The Greeks then pulled the curtain dividing the rooms.
The Chinese figures and images shimmeringly reflected
on the clear Greek walls. They lived there,
even more beautifully, and always,
changing in the light.
The Greek art is the sufi way.
They don’t study books of philosophical thought.
They make their loving clearer and clearer.
No wantings, no anger. In that purity
they receive and reflect the images of every moment,
from here, from the stars, from the void.
They take them in
as though they were seeing
with the lighted clarity
that sees them.—Rumi, Barks, op. cit. Chinese Art and Greek Art, ibid. pp. 121-122
BT Song 1565 Curtain
Simple English
Stanza 1
Two artists
Competed with each other
To prove who is the
Best artist.
Stanza 2
To decide that,
They selected
Two separate walls.
Stanza 3
A curtain
Separated them,
Both started
Their work.
Stanza 4
One artist used
Many colors,
Starting his
Painting.
Stanza 5
The other artist
Cleaned his wall,
Keeping it clean
And shining.
Stanza 6
Finally, the judge came
And marveled,
Seeing the colorful
Painting.
Stanza 7
When he went
To see the other side,
He saw only a
Shining wall.
Stanza 8
When the other artist
Removed the curtain,
The judge saw
The reflection.
Stanza 9
Of the colorful painting,
Shining clearly
And more beautifully
Than the original.
Stanza 10
As the shining wall
Added new shades,
The colors looked
More beautiful with various shades.
Stanza 11
Like that,
The devotees who
Cannot utter or write
Any kind of philosophy.
Stanza 12
As they cleanse both
Heart and mind,
Removing
All attachments.
Stanza 13
The entire cosmos
Will shine on the
Walls of their heart
As a beautiful painting.
Stanza 14
As God also
Gives Her vision there,
By staying
Permanently with them.
Stanza 15
Each and every moment,
Having Her vision,
And helping others
To have the same.
Stanza 16
They will behold
Her vision permanently,
And God also abides there
Permanently to give vision.

எப்படி வந்தாய்
13
இருவித மனதுடன்
குந்திக் குந்தி
நடக்கும் நீயும்
எவ்விதம் உணர்வாய்
14
19
எனக்கும் அவனுக்கும்
இடையே நடந்ததை
சொல்ல வேண்டிய
அவசியம் இல்லை

BT Song 1564 I don’t need freedom
1
எழுத்திலும் ஏட்டிலும்
ஏதுமே இல்லை
இதயத்தில் உன்னை
உணராதே போது
2
எத்தனை எழுதினும்
பயனுமே இல்லை
எழுத்துக்கு அப்பால்
செல்லாத போது
3
உன்னில் என்னை
தொலைக்க மறந்து
எழுத்தில் என்னை
தொலைத்ததினாலே
4
எழுத்திலே நானும்
என்னை இழக்க
உன்னை நானும்
என்னில் இழந்தேன்
5
இழக்கக் கூடாது
இதயத்தில் இருக்க
எண்ண முடியாது
சிந்தையில் இருக்க
6
எத்தனைப் பாடல்கள்
எழுதி பாடினும்
அவற்றால் எவ்விதப்
பயனும் இல்லை
7
ஆயினும் எழுத்தை
விடவும் முடியலை
அதற்கும் காரணம்
நானும் இல்லை
8
எண்ணத்தில் நிறைந்து
இதயத்தில் இருந்து
எழுதச் செய்கிறாய்
வழியெனக் கில்லை
9
முழுதும் மழையில்
நனைந்த பின்னே
முக்காடு போட
அவசியம் என்ன
10
உன்னில் மூழ்கி
மறைந்த பின்னே
நீர்மேல் நடக்க
அவசியம் என்ன
11
ஆகவே மீண்டும்
உன்னில் மூழ்கி
மேலவர வேண்டிய
அவசியம் இன்றி
12
முழுதும் நனைந்த
உடையை களைந்து
மீண்டும் மீண்டும்
உன்னில் நனைந்தேன்
13
விடுதலை என்ற
எண்ணமும் இன்றி
என்னை உனது
சிறையில் வைத்தேன்

BT Song 1565 மனத்திரை
1
இருவருக்கிடையே
போட்டி வந்தது
எவரின் சித்திரம்
சிறந்தது என்று
2
அதனை அவரும்
முடிவு செய்ய
தெரிந்து எடுத்தார்
தனித்தனி சுவரை
3
இருவருக்கிடையே
திரையும் தொங்க
இருவரும் தொடங்கினார்
அவரது பணியை
4
ஒருவன் பலவித
வண்ணம் கொண்டு
உயர்தரமான
சித்திரம் வரைய
5
மற்றவன் சுவரை
சுத்தமாகி
வைத்துக் கொண்டான்
பளபளப்பாக
6
இறுதியில் நடுவர்
வந்து பார்த்து
வண்ணச் சித்திரம்
கண்டு வியந்தார்
7
மறுபுறம் சென்று
பார்த்த போது
பளபளப்பான
சுவரைக் கண்டார்
8
அப்போ அவனும்
திரையை நீக்க
நடுவர் கண்டார்
அவனது சுவரில்
9
மற்றவன் வரைந்த
வண்ணச் சித்திரம்
அங்கே ஒளிர்ந்தது
அதனினும் அழகாய்
10
பளபளப்பு தனி
ஒளியை கூட்ட
வண்ணம் தெரிந்தது
தனியொரு அழகாய்
11
அதுபோல் தத்துவம்
ஏதும் பேச
எழுதிக் காட்ட
அறியார் பக்தர்
12
சித்தம் இதயம்
சுத்தம் ஆக்கி
ஆசா பாசம்
அறவே நீக்கி
13
அவரது தூய
மனதின் திரையில்
அண்டம் ஒளிரும்
சித்திரமாக
14
அத்துடன் அங்கு
இறைவன் காட்சி
நிரந்தரமாக
அவருடன் தங்க
15
ஒவ்வொரு கணமும்
அவனைக் கண்டு
அவனை மற்றவர்
காணச் செய்து
16
தரிசனம் காண்பார்
நிரந்தரமாக
இறைவனும் நின்றான்
தரிசனமாக
