BT Songs 1601 to 1605

 BT Song 1601

This morning, I sat with a cup of tea near the bay window, stretching my legs. At that time, the sun was about to rise. It slowly emerged with a bright orange color, bringing joy and a smile to me. Sipping my tea, enjoying the sunrise, and immersing in the silence around me, I experienced bliss. But before I could finish my tea, as the sun began to change its color and the hot rays started to hit my body, I got up immediately to move away. Then I realized how contrasts are part of life and nature. Did God create only good and never evil? According to the Bible, God never created evil but only good. According to Hinduism, both are part of God’s creation, part of Her Nature. Anyhow, if God didn’t create it, then He allowed it to enter His good creation. Then from where did that evil come? If it were a fallen angel, according to Christian mythology, before that, God alone created even that angel. Well, further discussion on this topic is like peeling the onion to find out its seed. Only tears will come—of course, cleaning our eyes, but we would never get the onion seed.

To have a smooth life, we need both good and bad. Otherwise, life won’t move. Both nature and life demonstrate this very clearly.

BT Song 1601 Both Are Needed

Thinking of it as illusion

Without considering anything

Not rejecting

Any work as unnecessary

The life

Is good

I also live

Happily today

3.

Ups and downs

Sweet and bitter

Mixed together

Tasting one

Rejecting the other

The life lived

Becomes loathsome

What is good for the tongue

Is an enemy to the stomach

What is good for the stomach

Is an enemy to the mouth

If you want

Permanent goodness

The coming and going

Of opposites is needed

The Lord

Kept both

To do good

10.

Accepting that

Giving it together

Bless and see

You will understand later

BT Song 1602

See: Oh My God Part Six: God and Worship

BT Song 1602 You Become What?

Simple English

1.

My eyes have never

Seen your vision

My ears have never

Listened to your voice

2.

You also never

Remain as my thought

Still, you come and

Have a relationship with me

3.

Becoming which

You dwell within me

Becoming who

You are communicating with me

4.

Not remaining both of them

Going beyond all of them

Which form

Have you taken

5.

Seeing your vision

That I have never seen

Listening to your voice

Which I never heard

6.

Experiencing your presence

Which never remains as an experience

How to share

Writing but not writing

7.

But this is not

Mere emotion

There is no point in telling that

This is my experience

8.

Through which faculty

Can I explain that

Which stands beyond

All faculties

9.

But you showed

A way to it

But you refused to give

A name for that

10.

But you gave a

Way for me to

Know without knowing

Understand without understanding

11.

Walking in that way

By actually not walking

Living each day

Actually not living

12.

Joining you actually

Not joining

Finally, I will become one with you

Actually, not merge with you

13.

Therefore, there is no

Need for your vision

There is no need

To listen to your voice

14.

There is no place

For thought also

As everything is

Possible for you

BT Song 1602 Thou Becomest What?

Classical English

1.

Mine eyes have never

Beheld thy vision

Mine ears have never

Harkened to thy voice

2.

Thou also never

Remainest as my thought

Still, thou comest and

Hast a relationship with me

3.

Becoming what

Thou dwellest within me

Becoming who

Thou communicatest with me

4.

Not remaining as either

Surpassing all of them

What form

Hast thou taken

5.

Beholding thy vision

That I have never seen

Hearing thy voice

Which I have never heard

6.

Experiencing thy presence

Which never remains an experience

How to share

Writing yet not writing

7.

But this is not

Mere emotion

It is futile to say

This is my experience

8.

By which faculty

Can I explain that

Which stands beyond

All faculties

9.

Yet thou showed

A way to it

But thou refused to give

A name to it

10.

But thou gavest a

Way for me to

Know without knowing

Understand without understanding

11.

Walking that path

Yet actually not walking

Living each day

Yet actually not living

12.

Joining thee yet

Not joining

Finally, I shall become one with thee

Yet actually not merge with thee

13.

Therefore, there is no

Need for thy vision

There is no need

To listen to thy voice

14.

There is no place

For thought either

As all is

Possible for thee

 BT Song 1603

May Day special to God. Either give retirement, or I will serve a hartal notice. As a Master, He is also subjected to human values. If I miss this day, He will continue as a Task Master.  If He knows how to accomplish His task, then we know how to get back our rights.

BT Song 1603 Rest is Needed

Simple English

1.

For some reason

Setting one thing

Accordingly

Creating the situation

2.

Seeing your

Skill and ability

I marvel

So does my mind

3.

You won’t say

Anything beforehand

What the plan is

Tell that too not

4.

With trust

I comply

With me alone

You do everything

5.

When planning

Slowly proceeds

Several questions

Come to my mind

6.

Knowing that

No answers will come

I too

Continue my work

7.

Understanding

My mind’s flow

Feeling the trust

Placed on you

8.

Slowly making

Things clear

Finally, you

Complete your task

9.

Whether it is one

Or two, tell me

All your completed

Tasks fully

10.

Thinking it’s over

With this

Again starts

Something new

11.

A rest

Is needed

The tired body

Needs it

12.

Even though I have

Said this many times

Still no

Answer has come

13.

Knowing that

Answers won’t come

I’ve avoided

Asking questions

14.

If you give

An answer to this

This will be

The last question

15.

Just as you

Have a reason

For this too

I have a reason

16.

Understanding that

If you answer

There will be

More opportunities to act

17.

Thinking that

Somehow the work

Will get done

If you just stay idle

18.

A work stoppage

Will happen

Then you’ll understand

My situation too

19.

So without

Wasting time

Accept my right

To rest

20.

Give me rest

Quickly

And you

Do your work too

 BT Song 1604

Reading another book on dialogue {Francis X. Clooney, SJ, The Future of Hindu-Christian Studies: A Theological Inquiry, New York, Routledge, 2017}. Clooney, one of my favorite authors, again makes a passionate plea for the revival of dead or dying dialogue, which in the past was initiated only by Christians. Whatever argument he or anyone interested in such inter-religious dialogues presents, they forget one point: at least here in India, except for a few exceptional scholars, nobody is interested in any kind of dialogue with people of other faiths. Of course, we know that we cannot avoid them, but the general trend is to remain indifferent towards their faith, religious activities, and rituals, except when any of them pose any kind of threat to our life. “Mind your business” is the mark of an average Hindu. “You have your faith, and we have ours. What is there to learn from each other?” is their question. But though a student of religious scriptures like me might get some benefit from such books, still, both religious and spiritual activities and life remain personal to the Hindus rather than needing to be paraded or interacted with people of other faiths. For us, if there is any real substance in your faith, then it need not be propagated. It will attract others towards it on its own merit.

As I reflected on this subject of dialogue, I wrote this song.

BT Song 1604 Spiritual Ecstasy

Simple English

1.

Knowledge seeks the mind

Experience seeks the heart

Beyond both

The soul seeks something

2.

Feeling it has lost

Something

Desiring to

Attain it somehow

3.

The soul

Tries in many ways

Prepares itself

And waits

4.

Surpassing scriptures

Surpassing religions

Surpassing the limits

Of the mind with wisdom

5.

That secret

Reveals itself

Describing it

Without words

6.

No path

To lead there

No necessity

For anything

7.

Reaching that

State of ecstasy

Coming back again

Without the mind

8.

Thought and mind

Surpassing the state

Of speech and action

9.

Without agitation

Burning like

A radiant lamp

Shining brightly

10.

That very lamp

Lights another lamp

Yet its light

Never fades

11.

Who else but the one

Who understands this secret

Will attain

That ecstasy

12.

The one who attains

That supreme bliss

Becomes a spiritual light

Removing the darkness of the house

13.

Inward and outward

Peace will come

Giving the righteous path

To live gloriously

 BT Song 1605

I like the four terms that Algondavilli Govindacharya {1860-1940, Three Lectures on Inspiration, Intuition, and Ecstasy. Wesleyan Mission Press, 1897, pp. 82-83, in Francis X. Clooney, SJ, The Future of Hindu-Christian Studies: A Theological Inquiry, New York, Routledge, 2017, p. 53} used: intuition, inspiration, revelation, and ecstasy. After reading this section, when I was thinking about what kinds of words exist for this in Tamil, as inspiration came, I wrote this song. But I had to rephrase the words several times to communicate my thought, but this one poem resisted that attempt. Anyhow, not giving up, I tried my best.

BT Song 1601

6.

இடையில் வந்திடும்

பலவிதத் தடைகளை

எளிதாகக் கடந்து

எய்தலாம் அந்நிலை

7.

ஆயினும் முதலடி

எடுத்து வைக்க

அதிலே நாமை

அழைத்துச் செல்ல

8.

குருவாக மாறி

அவன் வரும்போது

கரம்கொண்டு அவனது

தாளினைப் பற்றி

9.

அபயம் அளித்து

அள்ளி எடுத்து

நம்மை அனைத்து

தன்னுடன் இணைத்து

10.

அளிக்கும் அந்த

குரு உபதேசம்

நம்மில் நிறு

நிலைக்கும் போது

11.

வந்திடும் அந்த

உந்துதல் உள்ளே

தந்திடும் மன

உணர்வின் ஊடே

12.

வெளிப்படும் அந்த

பரவசம் மீண்டும்

ஆனாமா அதிலே

திளைக்கும் என்றும்
