BT Songs 1646 to 1650

BT Song : 1646

As I was typing notes from Rumi, one of his poems deeply impressed me. While on my evening walk, meditating on it, I wrote this song. I’ve written several poems like this before, but I never realized that this inner longing could also be one of the ways God answers my prayers.

He quit praying and fell into a confused sleep.

He dreamed he saw Khidr, the guide of souls,

In thick, green foliage,

“Why did you stop praising?”

“Because I’ve never heard anything back.”

“This longing you express is the return message.”

— Coleman Barks, The Essential Rumi, Introduction to the New Expanded Edition, New York, HarperCollins, 2004, “Love Dogs,” p. 155.

 BT Song   1646 Longing

Simple English Translation:

1.

No matter how much I ask,

Your heart does not relent.

No response has yet

Come to me.

2.

Why are you doing this?

I don’t understand.

What should I do next?

Even that, I don’t know.

3.

Come to me directly,

Tell me what to do.

Or show me

In the scriptures.

4.

Give me a vision,

I ask you earnestly.

Show me in my dreams,

I never plead with you.

5.

Through someone else,

Reveal it to me.

Or even through

The words of others.

6.

If any other way

Seems right to you,

Use that way

And fulfill your work.

7.

No matter how I ask,

You won’t reply.

No matter how much I cry,

You won’t be moved.

8.

But don’t assume

That this alone

Is bearable for me,

I cannot endure it.

9.

But even for you,

You need time,

When I thought

About it.

10.

So, I gave you

The time you needed.

Now, I

Have silenced myself.

11.

Then, after resting,

When I returned,

I found inner peace

After that.

12.

Then you silently asked,

“Do you still have

Any longing

Within you?”

13.

That very longing of yours

Is my answer.

Understanding that

Will do you good.

14.

After you said that,

I understood,

That this is

Your answer.

 BT Song   1646Longing

Classical English Translation:

1.

No matter how oft I plead,

Thy heart remains unmoved.

No answer yet has come

To me from Thee.

2.

Why dost Thou act thus?

I comprehend it not.

What should I do next?

Even that remains unknown.

3.

Come to me in person,

Tell me Thy will.

Or show it

In the holy scriptures.

4.

Grant me a vision,

I beseech Thee.

Reveal Thyself in dreams,

I implore not Thee.

5.

Through another’s mouth,

Show it unto me.

Or through the words

Of others reveal it.

6.

If any other way

Seems good in Thy sight,

By that means,

Fulfill Thy purpose.

7.

However much I ask,

Thou answerest not.

Though I cry aloud,

Thou remainest unmoved.

8.

But think not

That this alone

I can bear;

I cannot endure it.

9.

Yet even Thou

Needest time,

As I considered

In my thoughts.

10.

Thus I gave Thee

The time Thou required,

And now I

Have sealed my lips.

11.

Then, when I returned

After a season of rest,

I found inner peace

Within my soul.

12.

Then didst Thou ask,

In silent inquiry,

“Is there still

A longing within?”

13.

That very longing

Is my answer to thee.

Understanding it

Will be for thy good.

14.

When Thou didst say this,

I too understood,

That this indeed

Is Thy reply.

BT Song 1647:

There is a saying that “God never grants us vacations or holidays.” When I thought I had finally reached my retirement, able to live peacefully in my favorite place, enjoying His presence surrounded by nature, He assigned me new tasks—writing, interacting with others, even visits—things I no longer wish to do. Yet, in the end, we only receive one crown, which is already assured. So why must I run another marathon for a second crown? Let Him keep even the crown I deserve and grant me this one on earth—a perfect retirement life.

BT Song 1647 No need for any race

Simple English Translation:

1.

Thinking that

I had finished the race,

I rested

And sat down.

2.

But again,

You set another race,

And made me run—

Where is the justice in that?

3.

How many races

Must I run?

In the end,

Only one crown is won.

4.

That one alone

Is enough for me.

Why do I need

Another one?

5.

First, tell me

How many races

You ran,

And then ask me to run.

6.

Then make me run,

And you can watch

As I run

For your amusement.

7.

Once you came

To the world,

Ran a single race,

And finished it.

8.

Will you dare

To come again,

And run

Another race?

9.

Is there one rule for you,

And another for me?

Is this rule

A just one?

10.

So, that’s enough.

No more races,

I don’t want

Another crown.

11.

Keep what you’ve given,

And leave me be—

That is enough

For today.

BT Song 1647 No need for any race

Classical English Translation:

1.

Thinking I had completed

My journey,

I rested

And sat in peace.

2.

Yet once again,

Thou hast set another race,

And bid me run—

Where is the justice in that?

3.

How many contests

Must I endure?

In the end,

Only one crown is gained.

4.

That one alone

Suffices for me.

Why should I

Seek another?

5.

First, tell me

How many races

Thou hast run,

And then bid me to run.

6.

Then make me race,

And watch with delight,

As I run

For Thy amusement.

7.

Once Thou camest

To the world,

Ran a single course,

And completed it.

8.

Wilt Thou dare

To return again,

And run

A fresh contest?

9.

Is there one rule for Thee,

And another for me?

Is this justice

Indeed righteous?

10.

Enough is enough—

No more races.

I seek not

Another crown.

11.

Keep what Thou hast given,

And leave me be—

That suffices

For today.

BT Song 1648:

The ‘Vadai’ rainy season, with its wind, is both an enemy and a companion to the girl who suffers from Viraha Bhava. Similarly, both shyness and longing complement each other in Viraha. However, Bhakti based on Jnana transcends shyness and rejects any restrictions on a personal relationship with Bhagavan. Over the past two days, there has been a slight drizzle with wind, making it very cold. In Tamil literature, this season is called the ‘Vadai season,’ where the longing lover expresses both her shyness and yearning when her beloved arrives but still stands apart. After a hot cup of tea, sitting by the bay window, enjoying the drizzle and cool wind, I thought this was the perfect time for another Viraha Bhakti song, and this song emerged from that meditation.

BT Song 1648 Bhakti without shyness

Simple English Translation:

1.

Not knowing

That desire is hollow,

I eagerly

Ran towards You.

2.

Yet modesty

Held me back on one side,

While desire

Pushed me forward on the other.

3.

Caught in between the two,

I stood confused

And exhausted.

4.

Unlike me,

You have no modesty,

And You are not

Without desire.

5.

Yet delaying

To embrace me

Is surely

Not just.

6.

Did You think

Where would she go?

Would You find comfort

In another’s embrace?

7.

Even after I gave up shame

And said all this,

Do You still refuse

To ease my yearning?

8.

Tell me,

Is there any devotee like me?

Think,

Is there any bond like ours?

9.

I cannot bear separation

Even for a moment,

I will never forget our love—

I lie at Your feet, unlike others.

10.

Some seek You

Only when they need,

And forget You

Once their needs are met.

11.

You wait

For their arrival,

But forget

That I am near You.

12.

I know

This is also a play,

And I understand

That it will end soon.

13.

But, O Lord,

I cannot bear

This interval

Even for a moment.

14.

After gaining this wisdom,

Tell me,

Is there any shame

In devotion?

15.

Leaving shame behind,

I embrace You,

And You

Merge completely within me.

Gurukulam, 16-7-2024, Morning 6:30

BT Song 1648 Bhakti without shyness

Classical English Translation:

1.

Not knowing

That desire is but vanity,

With eagerness

I rushed to Thee.

2.

Yet modesty

Restrained me on one side,

While desire

Urged me forward on the other.

3.

Caught between the two,

I stood bewildered,

And wearied.

4.

Unlike me,

Thou art without modesty,

Nor art Thou

Devoid of desire.

5.

Yet to delay

In embracing me

Is surely

Not just.

6.

Didst Thou think

Where would she go?

Wouldst Thou find solace

In another’s embrace?

7.

Even after I cast off shame

And spoke all this,

Dost Thou still refuse

To quench my yearning?

8.

Tell me,

Is there any devotee like unto me?

Consider,

Is there any bond like ours?

9.

I cannot endure separation

Even for a moment,

I shall never forget our love—

I lie at Thy feet, unlike others.

10.

Some seek Thee

Only in their need,

And forget Thee

Once their desires are fulfilled.

11.

Thou waitest

For their coming,

But forgettest

That I am near Thee.

12.

I know

This too is Thy play,

And I comprehend

That it shall soon end.

13.

Yet, O Lord,

I cannot bear

This interval

Even for a brief time.

14.

With this wisdom attained,

Tell me,

Is there shame

In devotion?

15.

Casting aside all shame,

I embrace Thee,

And Thou

Dost merge wholly within me.

BT Song 1649:

Every faith teaches that we are merely guests on this earth, with our permanent abode somewhere else—be it heaven or Mukti. An Indian proverb says that both medicine and hospitality are best for only three days. The guest understands this better than the host. Out of love, the host might insist the guest stay longer, but the guest knows that overstaying diminishes the hospitality. My plea to God is the same—never force me to stay longer than a guest.

 BT Song 1649 Unwanted guest

Simple English Translation:

1.

If I don’t ask You,

Whom else should I ask?

If You don’t come and give,

Who else can I turn to?

2.

The right to ask

Is mine,

The duty to give

Is Yours.

3.

I have nothing new to ask,

Nor can I ask

Without understanding.

4.

The lessons

Learned from experience

Are not

Easily forgotten.

5.

You fulfilled

The purpose of my coming,

And made me understand

The purpose of living.

6.

But You still

Refuse to reveal

The reason

For my continued existence.

7.

You may have

A thousand reasons,

But none of them

Matter to me now.

8.

I have only

One reason,

And You have

No way to deny it.

9.

After saying

“It’s enough,”

What’s the use

Of continuing to live?

10.

Like a guest,

Leaving quickly

Is good

For everyone in human life.

11.

If asked to stay

Permanently,

No guest

Would stay.

12.

Guests know

That staying too long

Lessens the value

Of the hospitality.

13.

You know well

Where my true home is,

So help me

Return there.

14.

Don’t keep me

As a guest here;

Help me

Reach my home.

Gurukulam, 9-5-2024, Night, 11:00

 BT Song 1649 Unwanted guest

Classical English Translation:

1.

If I seek not Thee,

To whom else shall I turn?

If Thou comest not to give,

On whom else shall I rely?

2.

The right to ask

Is mine,

The duty to bestow

Is Thine.

3.

There is nothing new

That I seek,

Nor can I ask

In ignorance.

4.

The lessons

Bestowed by experience

Are not

Easily forgotten.

5.

Thou hast fulfilled

The purpose of my coming,

And made me comprehend

The meaning of life.

6.

Yet Thou still

Dost withhold

The reason

For my continued existence.

7.

Thou mayest have

A thousand reasons,

But they avail me not

In this hour.

8.

I possess

But one reason,

And Thou canst not

Deny it.

9.

After declaring,

“It is enough,”

What purpose

Does continued life serve?

10.

Like a guest,

Departing swiftly

Is best

For all in this mortal life.

11.

If asked to dwell

Permanently,

No guest

Would consent to stay.

12.

The wise guest knows

That prolonged stay

Dims the worth

Of hospitality.

13.

Thou knowest well

Where lies my true abode;

Aid me

In my return.

14.

Hold me not

As a guest here;

Assist me

To reach my home.

BT Song 1650:

Lately, I’ve started forgetting many things. I can’t remember where I put things. One day, I was searching for my glasses while they were still on my face—not even on my head, as many seniors do. When I saw myself in the mirror in another room, I laughed, realizing I was already wearing them. Similarly, I’ve begun forgetting many thoughts I want to write down. In the past, during my walks, I could recall poems and write them down, but that seems to be a thing of the past now. In a way, I’m glad that God, understanding my needs, also granted me this gift of forgetfulness. It helps me relax and avoid being too preoccupied with writing. I want to limit my activities and spend my time leisurely. Often, I feel that I have nothing new to say beyond what I’ve already shared. Perhaps God granted this gift at the right time. If this turns out to be my final song, I would be content.

BT Song 1650 Began to forget

Simple English Translation:

1.

This is now

My situation.

What worry do I have

In speaking of it?

2.

My body and mind

Have both grown weary,

And along with it,

Forgetfulness has come.

3.

What I said,

What I did—

None of it

Is clear to me.

4.

Even in telling this,

I don’t fully grasp it.

Even if I write it down,

No one understands.

5.

Let it slide,

It’s fine.

Thinking You’ll understand—

That too is incorrect.

6.

What I came to say,

What it was—

Now,

I can’t recall clearly.

7.

But there’s no

Need for that.

There’s nothing new

To ask about.

8.

Since You are here,

Knowing

What I need,

And when.

9.

So, even this

Forgetfulness

Is now something

I need.

10.

Thinking this,

You gave it to me.

About that,

I have no questions.

11.

But why You gave it—

That’s something

I can’t

Forget either.

12.

So, keeping this

In memory,

I find no way

To remind myself.

Gurukulam, 19-7-2024, Night, 11:30

BT Song 1650 Began to forget

Classical English Translation:

1.

This is now

My condition.

What concern have I

In recounting it?

2.

Body and mind

Have both grown weary,

And with them,

Forgetfulness has arrived.

3.

What I spoke,

What I did—

None of it

Is clear to me.

4.

Even in conveying this,

I lack full understanding.

Even if written,

None can comprehend.

5.

Let it slide,

Let it be.

To assume Thou understandest—

Even that is incorrect.

6.

What I intended to say,

What it was—

Now,

It escapes my memory.

7.

But for that,

There is no necessity.

There is nothing new

To inquire about.

8.

For Thou art here,

Knowing

What I need,

And when.

9.

Thus, even this

Forgetfulness

Is something

I now require.

10.

Thinking this,

Thou gavest it to me.

Regarding that,

I have no queries.

11.

But why Thou gavest it—

That, too,

Is something

I cannot forget.

12.

Thus, keeping this

In remembrance,

I find no means

To remind myself.

 BT Song 1650 மறதி வந்தது

1.

இதுதான் இப்போ

எனது நிலைமை

இதைச் சொல்வதில்

எனக்கென்ன கவலை

2.

உடலுடன் மனதும்

ஓய்ந்து போச்சு

அத்துடன் மறதி

வந்தும் ஆச்சு

3.

எதைச் சொன்னோம்

எதைச் செய்தோம்

என்பதும் எனக்குப்

புரியாமல் போச்சு

4.

இதையும் சொல்ல

எனக்குத் தெரியல

எழுதி காட்டினும்

எவருக்கும் புரியல

5.

சரிவிடு போகட்டும்

உனக்குப் புரியும்

என்று நினைத்தால்

அதுவும் சரியில்ல

6.

சொல்ல வந்தது

என்ன என்பதும்

சுத்தமா இப்போ

நினைவுக்கு வரல

7.

ஆனால் அதற்கு

அவசியம் இல்ல

புதுசா கேட்க

ஏதும் இல்ல

8.

எப்போ எனக்கு

என்ன தேவை

என்பது அறிய

நீயும் இருக்க

9.

ஆகவே இந்த

மறதி கூட

இப்போ எனக்குத்

தேவை என்று

10.

எண்ணி நீயும்

எனக்கு கொடுக்க

அதுபற்றி கேள்வி

எனக்கு இல்ல

11.

ஆனால் எதற்கு

கொடுத்தாய் என்று

மறக்க நானும்

காரணம் இல்ல

12.

ஆகவே இதை

நினைவு வைத்தது

நினைவு படுத்த

வழியெனக் கில்ல
