Secular Song 636
Maintaining balance is the true art of life. In today’s fast-paced world, people are constantly rushing, often failing to complete tasks to their satisfaction. Balance isn’t about being inert or lazy; it’s about making thoughtful decisions, observing everything carefully to accomplish tasks with minimal strain and stress. Unfortunately, many busy people fail to understand that maintaining balance can sometimes be more demanding than rushing through life in haste.
Secular Song 636 – Action
Try to stay still,
Without doing anything.
Try to stay calm,
Without thinking of anything. 1
Even if you cannot,
Avoid it somehow.
Even if that fails,
Don’t worry about it. 2
We came to the world,
To act and do things.
Without action, life,
Won’t move forward at all. 3
If your strength fails,
The body’s health will end.
But even that,
Can be seen as an action. 4
But running tirelessly,
Rushing like a demon,
If you keep doing tasks,
The body will slow down. 5
After that, your body,
Will shrink and weaken.
Therefore, daily tasks,
Will eventually stop. 6
In everything, find balance,
And live life wisely.
Understand the reason,
For everything you do. 7
Standing at one boundary,
Looking at another,
You’ll see there,
A dim vision of life . 8
So, in everything,
Find balance and peace.
Living this way,
Is also an act. 9

Secular Song 637
It’s astonishing how gadgets have created rifts between people. Although we’re always connected, genuine fellowship is missing. Everyone lives on their own little island, believing their life is self-sufficient. In the past, we wrote long letters—sometimes pages—trying to save money by squeezing words onto a postcard, leaving no space between the lines. Then came the landline phone, gradually eroding the art of letter writing. Modern gadgets have nearly destroyed human fellowship and communication, leaving us with only simple emojis. Yet, we, the older generation, are content in a way. Though left alone, we manage our lives on our own terms, talking more with relatives and close friends rather than engaging with strangers or listening to them on social media. In the past, people lived like a herd of sheep, following a single alpha sheep. But now, people are more like cats—each going their own way, independent and self-directed.
Secular Song 637 – Laughing While Crying
I laugh by myself,
I cry by myself.
Then I write a song,
About all of this. 1
I read the song,
And enjoy it alone.
I clap for it,
All by myself. 2
There’s no one to ask,
Why I do this.
Even if they were,
They have no time. 3
In a way,
This is good for me.
I have no conflict,
With anyone. 4
What’s the use,
Of living together?
In everyone’s life,
This is the truth. 5
After cell phones came,
Everyone became,
Separated islands,
Far apart. 6
No one talks,
To each other anymore.
And if others do [in social media],
They listen carefully. 7
They laugh together,
And cry together.
But within the home,
They don’t do this. 8
If this is the state,
Of the home inside,
There’s no need to talk,
About the outside world. 9
People who lived,
Like a flock of sheep,
Have now turned,
Into groups of cats. 10
The saying, “The mind’s journey,
Is Shiva’s journey,”
Has now become,
So true today. 11
Like a typical siddha,
Everyone has gone,
And in the end,
They become like Shiva. 12
But poor Shiva,
What a situation!
Even he couldn’t,
Get what he wanted. 13
One at the side,
And one on the head,
This is how,
His situation turned out. 14
Whether it’s man,
Or even a god,
Whether it’s a goat,
Or even a cat. 15
A life like mine,
No one else has.
To get such a life,
Is impossible. 16
Thinking of my state,
I laughed within myself.
Thinking of others’ states,
I cried for them. 17
But no one knows,
About any of this.
But this too,
Is good for them. 18
Whatever happens,
Will go along with me.
This is the truth,
Of life itself. 19

Secular Song 638
Life is an unending story. It started somewhere by someone and will continue indefinitely. All we can do is adapt ourselves to the flow of the story, which may force unexpected changes not only to our character but also to the narrative itself. Yet, we must keep acting, unaware of how our role will end or where the story will take us. In a way, this is a good thing—it ensures we remain part of this never-ending drama called life.
Secular Song 638 – Endless Drama
What kind of drama,
Exists in this world?
We act in all of them,
And enjoy it a lot. 1
Every day,
A stage must be set,
And on it today,
We must perform. 2
There is no permanent stage,
For us to stand on,
And no fixed role,
For us to play. 3
We must wear the role,
That suits the situation,
And accordingly,
The story must be formed. 4
Even after writing the story,
And rehearsing well,
There’s often no chance,
To present it on stage. 5
During rehearsal itself,
The story may change,
And we must change,
Our role to match it. 6
As the story goes,
We go along,
And as we go,
The story changes. 7
There’s no time for breaks,
Or pauses in between,
We must keep rehearsing,
Without stopping. 8
Until the end,
We won’t know the finish,
If we manage to act,
And complete it somehow. 9
In the middle,
A new story may arise,
And this drama too,
Will continue endlessly. 10
Again and again,
The story may change,
And even the beginning,
May become unclear. 11
If we wish for this drama,
To end with us,
Even that chance,
Might be lost. 12
Some may come,
To continue what we leave,
And many will come,
To see what follows. 13
Therefore, in this world,
There is no end,
To this drama,
It never stops. 14

Uppuma and Amma
I made idli as the weekend special. Since there was some extra dough left, instead of keeping it for dosa or kuzhi paniyaram, I made idlies and stored them in the fridge. In South India, we also make ‘Uppuma’ from idlis. So this morning, I prepared idli uppuma, similar to regular uppuma made from suji or poha (there are various kinds of uppuma in the South). One thing to remember, if you’ve never made idli uppuma before, is to take it out of the fridge two or three hours beforehand. Then, prepare it just like regular uppuma (or with poha), adding vegetables, nuts, and dipping the idlis in water to crumble them before mixing with the vegetables. Enjoy with chutney, sambar, or your favorite accompaniment.
Uppuma is known as ‘Bachelors’ food’ throughout the day. It’s also referred to as ‘Studio artists music’. In the past, during disruptions in radio broadcasts, ‘studio artists music’ would play immediately—it was kept ready for such occasions. Similarly, if there was a delay before the next program, it would fill the gap. Like the famous children’s rhyme, there’s a bachelor’s rhyme for Uppuma:
Uppuma in the morning,
Uppuma in the afternoon,
Uppuma when the sun goes down.
While I was out for my evening walk, thinking about this, I wrote a song glorifying uppuma, which still remains a savior for many bachelors.
Translating this song in other languages is almost impossible. Anyhow I will do my best.

Uppuma is famously known as “Bachelors’ food” and is often referred to as “Studio artists’ music.” In the past, whenever there were disruptions in radio broadcasts, “studio artists’ music” would immediately play—it was always ready for such moments. Similarly, if there was a delay before the next program, it would fill the gap. Like the children’s rhyme, there’s a bachelor’s rhyme for Uppuma:
Uppuma in the morning,

Uppuma when the sun goes down.
During an evening walk, while reflecting on this, I composed a song celebrating Uppuma, which continues to be a lifesaver for many bachelors. Translating this song into other languages is nearly impossible, but I’ve done my best.
Secular Song 639
My Deity
The delicious Uppuma,
my revered deity,
cared for me
three times a day.
Will this happen
if my mother were here?
Will things change
if I marry?
Can anyone else
make Uppuma
like my mother does?
What if a wife
comes into my life,
could she cook
like my Amma?
So, other than
my Amma,
what others make
is just a trial.
Even after
understanding this well,
is it right for her
to witness this drama?
Is it fair
if she says
once married,
I’ll stay silent?
But having seen
my father’s state,
can I agree
to marry?
So, if my Amma
returns and prepares
Uppuma thrice a day,
Considering it
as nectar,
will my mind
refuse to eat?
Since that
will never happen,
now Uppuma
is my guardian deity.
Therefore, worshiping
this deity
and offering Uppuma
as a sacred offering.
Once Uppuma, the deity,
and this devotee
merge together,
will there be any separation?

Secular Song 640
Unlike friendship, which we can choose and discard, we cannot do the same with relationships. They exist before we’re born and continue even after we’re gone. Relationships come with an inheritance that we cannot escape. Unlike friendship, where enmity has no place, every relationship carries it. From the moment we’re born into a particular family, the enmity between relatives becomes part of our inheritance. Even if we wish to reconcile and discard the enmity, it’s not easy, as it involves both parties. Thus, the love-hate dynamic in relationships is an unavoidable part of life.
Secular Song 640 – Relationship and Enmity
Without relationships,
Without enmity,
There is no life,
And no way to avoid both. 1
One turns into the other,
And swaps places,
There’s always a reason,
No doubt about it. 2
Caught in between,
If we think of our life,
There is no cruelty,
Worse than this. 3
From the moment of birth,
It arrives with us,
And even after we leave,
It continues on. 4
We aren’t the cause,
But still,
There’s no way,
To avoid it. 5
Half of it comes,
And finds us on its own,
The other half,
We seek out ourselves. 6
So both together,
In life,
Always keep us,
Fighting endlessly. 7
We know what to leave,
And what to hold on to,
But still,
The choice isn’t ours. 8
The end is not,
In our hands,
You can’t clap,
With just one hand. 9
We’ll do our part,
And see it through,
Leaving the rest,
To others. 10
Whatever the end may be,
We are not,
Responsible for it,
In any way. 11

Secular Song 636 –

Secular Song 637 –

Secular Song 638 –

Secular Song 639

Secular Song 640 –
