Secular Song 641
“Old is gold” holds true in every area of life. While change is inevitable, and new forms emerge, when we delve deeper, we realize that much of what we consider inventions to enhance life are merely continuations of the past—exploring the unknown. The mystery of human life lies in the fact that, despite venturing into new areas, we often find ourselves returning to where we started.
Secular Song – Old is Good 641
No songs needed
No dances needed
No need to see
Or hear anything new 1
Repeating what was said
Seeing what was seen
It’s all gone sour
Don’t need it again 2
What’s new to see?
What’s new to hear?
What’s there in the new
To make it dear? 3
Grinding the same flour
Again and again
This life has become
So tiresome 4
Let it slide
Think and change
If we try to see
Or hear something new 5
Even in that,
No freshness found
Nothing new
Comes around 6
No matter how much
We add new spices
Cook it differently
When tried again 7
No matter how
The color changes
The taste remains
The same, unchanging 8
Looks may seem new
But when you taste
In the mouth,
The flavor’s old 9
Nothing is needed
Just being still
But even that,
Is old, until 10
Oh, that too
Is something old
That’s what we did
All along, so bold 11
So let things be
As they are
I looked, I heard
The old once more 12

Secular Song 642
After writing my review on Rebels Against the Raj by Ramachandra Guha, I reflected on the many who selflessly serve without expecting recognition, acceptance, or rewards. Most people never consider the thankless service of such individuals. Though hidden from public view, they quietly keep humanitarianism alive. We, the people, should take the time and effort to acknowledge and recognize them, even if we can’t emulate them. See Secular Song 631 for more on this.

Secular Song 642 – Sacrifice
This simplicity,
Who will gain it?
When you speak of it,
The mind is shaken 1
Giving up self-interests,
So many left behind
Thinking of their life,
Even wisdom is stunned 2
Thinking only
Of others’ needs,
For that alone,
They lived their deeds 3
Like melting wax,
They lived and ended
About them,
What can be said? 4
Thinking of them today,
Looking back,
No time left
To thank them right 5
Thinking of
Our rushing life,
What more
Can we say? 6
Human compassion
Has disappeared,
The thought of ‘man’
Has also vanished 7
No time to know
The self within,
And no time
To live for others 8
Newer values
Are ruling us,
Giving way
To their influence 9
While living,
When reading about
Their life of sacrifice,
It strikes us deeply 10
Hoping that the
Lost compassion
Will sprout again
In this world 11
Some who work
And live hard lives,
We must search
And learn from them 12
Worldly views
Hide within themselves,
Living simple lives,
They carry on 13
Even now,
Some live for others
Knowing their presence
We must realize 14
Their life,
Their service,
We must try
To make known to many 15

Secular Song 643
In some ways, life is like an athletic sport. Without proper training, one cannot achieve their goals. However, in life, even though others may train us, the struggle remains like an unending marathon or relay race. Just when we think we’ve successfully completed one challenge, another stands ready. The same applies to life’s struggles. They don’t end with us but continue into the next generation, as they inherit what we leave behind. Accepting that struggle is a part of life and facing it courageously—whether trained or untrained—allows us to leave a positive legacy for the next generation to learn from and continue.
Secular Song 643 – Endless Race
Without struggle,
Life does not move,
Without struggle,
Nothing is gained 1
Even if it moves,
What is gained
Is just another struggle,
What else can we do? 2
Struggling and struggling,
When we grow tired,
Even fatigue itself
Becomes a kind of struggle 3
Struggling with tiredness,
Fighting with fatigue,
When both become familiar,
Life moves on 4
After coming into the world
With all this,
Even when life
Comes to an end with it 5
Like an endless race,
Continuing what was left,
Others join in,
And that too continues 6
Turning into a race
With no end in sight,
With no way to stop,
That too continues 7
With no other way,
Running in this race,
Turning into
An endless race 8
So, get ready
To fight and struggle,
And learn to live
With it every day 9
No special training
Is needed,
No one to teach,
It’s not required 10
As it becomes
A part of life,
Let’s blend the two
And live sweetly 11

Secular Song 644
While scrolling through Facebook, I stumbled upon a group called “Sentamil Soali,” an exclusive community for Tamilians to share their poems. As a lover of Tamil and proud to have Tamil as my mother tongue, I immediately joined the group, even though I didn’t know anyone personally. One day, Sri Marayur Tanga. Karunakaran shared a poem alongside a picture of an elderly woman with wrinkles but a beautiful smile. Inspired by that image, I wrote this song. While Karunakaran’s poem was romantic, I saw in the woman’s face my own mother, and so I wrote this song, seeing only a mother in her.
Voice of the Heart: Song 644
When many pressures
Entered life,
Some wrinkles
Appeared on the face 1
But the mind’s rest
Is unknown to the heart,
How many beautiful
Smiles have bloomed 2
“No matter how much pressure
Comes into life,
Let your heart never falter,
My son,” she says 3
Without words,
Her beautiful eyes
Offer a deep
Embrace of love 4
This message
You have told us,
You lived it
Till now, dear mother 5
We, who found comfort
In your embrace,
Will always remain
Your children 6
Though once tied
In love to a husband,
You see us now
As your children 7
Whether young or old,
Whatever the age,
You will always
Be a mother to us 8

Secular Song 645
When I joined the group Senthamil Solai, I received a message welcoming me and addressing me as a “Poet” [Kavinjar]. It was the first time anyone had called me a poet, though once, a paper presented on my Bhakti Theology Songs referred to them as the work of a Tamil poet. Reflecting on this title amused me, yet it also made me appreciate the recognition of others’ talents. Such open acknowledgment should be welcomed. In fact, more than in any other nation, Indians—especially Tamilians—love to have special titles before their names in every field: politicians, artists, writers, speakers, singers, dancers, and so on. While I appreciate this trend, in my response, I wrote this song to express my belief that the only true and meaningful title one should earn and retain until the end of life is: “She or he lived as a human.”
Secular Song 645: Poet
Why the title of
Poet for someone?
Living as a human
And passing on is enough 1
To express a thought,
Why need a poet,
When the thought itself
Turns into poetry? 2
Arranging letters,
Forming words,
Does everything written
Become a poem? 3
Even the beauty
Within poetry,
Can it be fully
Captured in words? 4
Yet within this,
For Tamil alone,
A unique beauty
Comes on its own 5
For poetry, Tamil,
For Tamil, poetry,
Both blend
As one 6
And with Tamil
As the mother tongue,
What greater joy
Could there be? 7
In that joy,
Daily immersed,
We crawl and grow
In Tamil’s embrace 8
Turning into a human
Like a lotus,
The title of
“Human” is enough 9

Secular Song 645 :
