I recently came across the Miss World contest held in China. While I’m not typically interested in such events, I watched this one as it included an AIDS awareness segment. However, the selection of this year’s Miss World, a Chinese contestant, seemed blatantly stage-managed. Though I’m not an expert in judging such competitions, the entire process appeared artificial, as if following a pre-written script. It was particularly striking because the first and second runners-up were clearly more beautiful and talented. Yet, with the upcoming Olympic Games in China, it felt as though the panel, sponsors, and judges had already decided to crown the Chinese contestant, regardless of who truly deserved the title.
This kind of stage management isn’t limited to just this event. Many TV programs today, especially competitive ones, seem to follow a similar pattern. Performers who have connections to sponsors or are in some way influential often use every possible means to secure a win. While this might be acceptable if the sole aim is entertainment, it’s disheartening for those who put in considerable time and effort to genuinely compete. These individuals end up disillusioned by the manipulation behind the scenes.
Of course, we all have the option to watch or not, with the remote control in hand. But the erosion of certain values in these events is something we should all reflect on.
