Secular Songs 661 to 665

Secular Song 661

No one can learn or exist without the contribution of others—whether it is in the form of religion, language, or any ideology. Instead of viewing alternative perspectives as opponents, we should see them as contributions. By giving space for all kinds of expressions, we not only survive but also continue to grow. Otherwise, by creating divisions—based on language, religion, or ideology—we ultimately harm ourselves. If we adopt a savior mentality, thinking we are the only ones who can protect our particular point of view, we pave the way for enmity. In the end, both sides will be destroyed as the other is forced to use violence not only to defend but also to survive.

The Voice of the Mind 661 – Live and Let Live

Dividing like the months and languages,

We separate in many ways,

Even in birth,

We divide by race.

In the end,

We divide ourselves,

Questioning whether we are body,

Or soul, or mind.

Without separation,

There is no life,

And without dividing,

There is no living.

But if one destroys another,

Both will be destroyed,

There is no alternative.

Accepting differences,

And fostering unity,

If humanity is preserved,

We can live as humans.

There is enough space

For everyone to live,

This is what humanity

Must realize today.

But if we abandon this

And grow hatred,

That hatred will

Turn against us,

Gradually destroying

The sense of humanity,

And in the end,

Human kindness will completely vanish.

Voice of the mind 662

One person sent one Kural in which the lady says that though her beloved forgot her; she cannot forgot him.  This is found in Kammatppal in Kural in Viraha bhava.  But such kind of love though remain still part of few people’s life, the present generation has come out from such views and forgetting the past looking forward the future try to live their in the present.  I agree with them.  There is no point in ‘broken’ love affairs or marriages.  Though one’s mind will be affected by it, learning some good lessons through that bad experience one should move ahead in life than sit and lament about the past.  When I was invited for lunch during my visit to Ranikhet [Uttarakhand] the host invited another person from his neighbourhood from Delhi.  When I asked what he is doing, my host with a smile said, ‘He is searching for a better husband for his ex-wife who got divorce recently’.  Then we all laughed including that person.  Though I won’t agree ‘divorce’ as the solution for problem in marriage as it is another ‘problem’ than a solution, once divorced or a break has taken place in love affairs, there is no point of sitting lamenting over it.

When I was in Dehradun, I asked a mother when she was planning to arrange her son’s marriage. In his presence, she replied, “He says that unless he manages to find a better boyfriend for his ex-girlfriend who has recently broken her relationship with him, he can’t think about getting married himself. But the good news is that now he has asked me to find a girl for him and doesn’t want to go on another adventure.” We all laughed, including the boy.

Voice of the Mind 662 – Spilled Milk

What’s the point

Of sitting in front of

Spilled milk

And crying?

Remove the water,

Make rosewater,

And eat

What’s been prepared.

No relationship

Stands firm forever,

And there’s no way

To keep it steady.

Everything that stands

Will fall,

Everything gathered

Will separate.

Everything born

Will perish one day,

And in this situation,

There’s no change.@

If someone comes,

Welcome them,

If they part,

Send them off with blessings.

Wherever they are,

Let them live happily—

This alone

Is true love.

The past

Will pass,

And the future

Is uncertain.

Understand this truth,

And live fully

In this present day.

All accumulations end in decay;

All elevations end in downfall;

All unions end in separation;

And life itself ends in death.

Secular Song 663

The late Sankaracharya of Kanchi Mutt wrote a beautiful Sanskrit song for the late Bharat Ratna M. S. Subbulakshmi to perform at the United Nations. In one of the lines, the saint advises: “Avoid competition.” While competition can be beneficial in some contexts, it often leaves unhealthy impressions, especially on young children who are pressured to compete for titles.

Winners are frequently burdened with maintaining their status, while others, instead of feeling inspired, may develop an inferiority complex. Although the term “healthy competition” exists, human competition differs from that observed in the natural world. In nature, creatures compete for survival, but humans often compete for success, which is a relative value requiring others to fail. Success in this sense is akin to drawing a longer line next to an existing one to make the first line appear shorter, without erasing it. As Chatterji aptly defines it:

“True success lies not in defeating others but in uplifting oneself while inspiring others.”

‘…Competition can exist only with opponents, and not with colleagues.’[-Bankim Chandra Chatterji, quoted in Nirad C. Chaudhuri, The Continent of CIRCE; An Essay on the Peoples of India, Jaico Publishing House, Mumbai, (1966) Twelfth Jaico Impression:1999, p. 89].  And Elisabeth Elliot gives from her personal life’s experience by saying, ‘ I’ve been faced with the tremendously competitive brand of life here in the {United} States and the accompanying necessity of self-promotion which prizes and rewards the abilities of self-assurance, the art of making small talk dramatic and important, and the ability to sell oneself, in the face of which I always find myself pulling into my shell and having a fight with all sorts of feelings of inferiority….’[ Elisabeth Elliot, Who Shall Ascend: The Life of R. Kenneth Strachan of Costa Rica, New York, Happer & Row, 1968, p.114].  Of course others might have their alternative view which I respect.  But I never support competition.

Here is the Sanskrit song by Swamiji:

Maitrim bhajata akhila hrujetrim; Aatmavadeva paraanapi pashyata; yudham tyajata spardham tyajata; tyajata preshvakramamaakramanam.  Jananii pruthivii kaamadudhaaste; janakoo devaha sakaladayaaluhu; daamyata datta, dayadhvam janataa; shreyoo bhuuyaat sakalajanaanaam.

                                                 –H.H. Sri Chandrashekaraendra Saraswati Swamiji

Cultivate friendship which will conquer all hearts.  Look upon others as thyself.  Renounce wars; forswear competition.  Give up aggression others which is wrong.  Wide mother Earth, our Mother is here ready to give us all our desires.  We have the Lord, our Father, compassionate to all.  Ye people of the world, restrain yourself, give, be kind.  May all people be happy and prosperous.

Secular Song 663: Why Competition?

1.
By setting up competitions,
Giving points,
And declaring,
“This person has won.”

2.
Though this too
Is good in a way,
I fail to understand
Why this competition?

3.
There is no human
Without talent;
Nor is anyone
Unable to show it.

4.
Yet providing opportunities
And showcasing it
This way somehow
Doesn’t feel right.

5.
Though competition
May inspire,
The playing field
Is never equal.

6.
So let us avoid
This concept of competition
And give opportunities
Purely for talent.

7.
To encourage
Another’s skill,
Let everyone
Display their abilities.

8.
The mindset of competition
Brings nothing
But fosters
Inferiority.

9.
Yet without this trait,
Humanity
Has not lived
Until now.

10.
Competitions that inspire
Should come;
Competitions that degrade
Should disappear.

Secular Song 664

Progress in life requires the willingness to learn from others. While self-satisfaction is a virtuous quality compared to incessant longing, a desire to learn from others is essential—not just for personal growth, but for collective progress.

Some individuals, however, mistakenly believe their language, culture, or religion is entirely self-sufficient and superior, leaving them with nothing to learn from others. Such an attitude is akin to a frog in a well, unaware of the vast oceans and the broader world beyond its confines.

To grow, one must remain open to new perspectives and knowledge from the diverse world around us.

Voice of the Heart 664: What We Learn is a Handful of Sand

1.
There are thousands of things
We can learn from others,
And everyone
Needs this.

2.
What we have learned is little,
Much more remains,
And in this truth,
There is a message for us too.

3.
Just as iron sharpens iron,
When one learns from another,
Both are enriched.

4.
Boundaries expand,
Knowledge grows,
And we realize
How much more there is.

5.
We neither came
Nor can we live
In isolation;
Living alone serves no purpose.

6.
If we realize
That humanity is one,
There will be no divisions
Among us.

7.
The more we give,
The more knowledge grows;
The more we learn,
The more wisdom flourishes.

8.
This growth alone
Is the true greatness
Of the human race.

9.
Let us spread our wings
And soar in the sky;
Let us measure
The limitless cosmos.

10.
As we strive higher and higher,
We realize
The smallness
Of our own limits.

11.
If we give up this pursuit
And live like
A frog in the well,
What will we achieve?

Secular Song 665

There is a common saying: “When you don’t get what you like, start liking what you get.” While this is a practical approach to accepting the present, it shouldn’t lead to giving up hope for what you desire.

Another proverb reminds us: “Where there is a will, there is a way.” Balancing contentment with perseverance is essential. Accept the present, but also strive for the future. Longing for something can fuel determination and lead to paths you never imagined possible.

Both acceptance and ambition can coexist, driving us toward fulfillment while keeping us grounded in reality.

Voice of the Heart 665: Likes and Dislikes

1.
When I desired it,
It was out of reach;
When it was within reach,
I lost my desire.

2.
Seeking an alternative,
I asked a few,
“What is the solution
For this dilemma?”

3.
“Gruel money or mustache money,”
They said with a shrug.
What could I do
With such a reply?

4.
“You must let go
Of one of the two;
There is no other way,”
They proclaimed.

5.
Instead, I tried
Something different:
I drank the gruel
And wiped my mustache.

6.
By retaining both,
I left them astonished,
Staring at me
In wonder.

7.
“If there’s a will,
There’s a way,”
So goes the saying—
Isn’t that why it exists?

8.
With a slight
Shift in thought,
An alternative
Can always be found.

9.
When what you desire
Is beyond reach,
Try desiring it
Once it’s attained.

10.
Likes and dislikes
Are in our hands;
Recognize this truth
And embrace it.

Secular Song 661

Secular Song 662

Secular Song 663:

1.

2.

1.

2.

3.

4.
விட்டுவிடணும்;

5.

6.

7.

8.

9.

10.
நமது கையில்;
