Secular Song 681
When my mother stayed with me in the ashram, she would often talk to herself. When I went and asked if she needed anything, she would reply,
“Nothing. Don’t come and ask me just because I said something. This is part of old age. We start talking to ourselves—sometimes without even realizing it. You’ll do the same one day. And when you do, you’ll remember me.”
Now I often remember her—not just because I too talk to myself or unconsciously hum and sing songs, but because I deeply miss her. I live a solitary life, like a recluse, in a remote place near the forest with no one around. Still, this isn’t unique to me. Many elderly people, even those surrounded by family in their homes, experience the same thing. This, too, is part of the reality of aging. Whether one lives alone or with others, no one can entirely escape it.
The only hope is to accept this phase and live it joyfully. In my case, at least, I can do so without disturbing or annoying anyone. This afternoon, while working on some art, I found myself talking aloud. That’s when I remembered what my mother had said—and I wrote this song, dedicating it to all the seniors who have the quiet privilege of talking to themselves.
Secular Song 681: Learn to Live
1
Speaking softly
to one’s own self,
comforting the heart
by one’s own words.
2
There is a life
that moves this way—
its given name
is simply “old age.”
3
Though the world
surrounds you still,
and many bonds
hold you near—
4
When you wish
to sit and speak,
who will have
the time for you?
5
Reduce your needs,
set speech aside,
let silence rest
upon your lips.
6
Draw yourself
into your own space,
learn to live—
this is best.
7
Endlessly thinking
of days long gone,
and longing again
brings no use.
8
Counting today
with sighs and tears,
lamenting on—
brings no gain.
9
Today will turn
into yesterday;
there is no way
to change that truth.
10
Say, “Today is good,
and so will be tomorrow,”
hold to that trust,
and bow to Him.
11
Thus shall you pass
the days ahead;
to live this way
is truly best.

Secular Song 682
This is one of my constant struggles: I don’t want to think or write, yet my mind doesn’t allow it. Unless I write down my thoughts, they continue to echo in my mind, even when I am engaged in other work. As I cannot control my thoughts, there is no escape for either of us.
Though I convince myself that I write only for my own need, I sometimes share a few with others. Later, I regret doing so—not because of their response or lack of response, but because I contradict myself. I say I write only for my own sake, yet I still feel tempted to share with others.
Secular Song 682 – No Way Out
1
If I do not think,
It is good for me.
If I do not write,
It is good for writing.
2
But I cannot
Stop my thoughts.
And my writings
Help no one at all.
3
Though I know
My state so clearly,
I cannot stop
Thinking or writing.
4
Better to write
My thoughts on paper,
And keep them
Only for myself.
5
Even that thought
Did not stay away,
Yet I share—
For reasons unknown.
6
Though I may say,
“I wrote for myself,”
I still share it
With others somehow.
7
If anyone
Speaks against my view,
At once I give
A ready reply.
8
Yet from that
Comes no benefit—
This truth I
Have clearly learnt.
9
Still for some reason
I keep on writing,
And keep on seeking
The reason why.
10
Until my thoughts
Take pity on me
And stop—
I know, there is no way.

Secular Song 683
As I was revising and editing my life story, several “new” things appeared—but all of them, in essence, remained the same. Whatever once came as new in a certain stage of life eventually became the past. And whatever comes in a later stage, though it appears new, also becomes part of the same past.
Each stage of life has its own needs and demands, and we adjust our lives accordingly. While reading all my past accounts, I said to myself, “I don’t know whether to laugh or weep.”
It reminded me of a few Tamil film songs by poet Kannadasan: “Some laugh; some weep; but I am laughing while weeping” and “The human race is a mixture of both—half laugh and half weep.” It also echoed the Hindi saying: kabhi gham, kabhi khushi (sometimes sorrow, sometimes joy).
As the life cycle repeats and each stage demands its own needs, I realized: neither do I need to laugh nor to weep—it is enough to recognize this one truth: life remains the same, even as we move from one stage to another. That is why I wrote this song.
Secular Song 683 – Understanding Is Enough
1
When I recall
All that has passed,
Tell me—should I laugh,
Or should I cry?
2
Neither of the two
Brings any gain,
Nor has my state
Changed in the least.
3
Today I weep
Over my condition,
Tomorrow for the same
I laugh at myself.
4
Though time has changed,
Though scenes have shifted,
My condition has
Remained the same.
5
A need arose
Fitting the heart,
And life was shaped
To meet that need.
6
Even today
This is what happens—
Where, in this,
Is any change?
7
Once born, we grow,
And keep on moving—
Such is the state
Of life itself.
8
Nothing new
Ever happens,
Nothing old
Ever changes.
9
So do not
Think of anything,
Nor weep or laugh
Because of it.
10
Whatever happens,
This remains the truth—
To understand this truth
Is enough.

Secular Song 684
As I was reading some of my old diaries and records, I realized that the art of life is not easy. Unless we learn from our own experience, no one else can truly teach it to us.
Unlike other arts, the art of life is a bit complicated, for it demands that we combine two seemingly impossible things at the same time—like bowing without bending, or standing tall without twisting.
When these first few lines began to echo in my mind, I picked up my pen and wrote this song.
Secular Song 684 – The Skill of Living
1
Bent and straight,
Twisting and turning,
Life I have lived
In all its forms.
2
Yet I have not
Truly attained,
Until all things
Became as one.
3
When it was time
To bend, I bent;
When it was time
To rise, I rose.
4
By bending,
I did not gain;
By rising,
I did not win.
5
Wondering what
I ought to do,
I went to seek
Advice from others.
6
“Without twisting,
You must bend;
Without bending,
You must stand tall.
7
Without knowing
This rare skill,
There is no way
To understand.”
8
So they said—
And when I asked
If they would
Teach me the skill,
9
They replied,
“It cannot be taught;
This skill can
Only be known.”
10
So then I tried
On my own,
And learned at last
That special skill.
11
I wished to tell
And teach it
Gladly to
Other people.
12
But I understood—
Teaching it brings
No real
Benefit at all.
13
Even teaching
How to learn it
Brings no
Benefit either.
14
One must try,
Do it themselves—
For without knowing,
There is no way.

Secular Song 685
Recently, two people came from Hosur to meet me. After some conversation, they left. Later, one of them sent me a few voice messages asking further questions based on our discussion—particularly about doing sadhana.
In my reply, I wrote that the decision to begin any sadhana must be accompanied by the resolve not to abandon it quickly if it fails to produce the expected results immediately. As someone once wisely said, “Instant satisfaction is the curse of this age.”
Today, in everything we do, we want to see quick results. But every law has its own nature, and so does sadhana. Unless we persist in the path that once satisfied us in the beginning, changing from one practice to another will bring no benefit.
Of course, this is not limited to sadhana alone. Life is full of both short-term and long-term goals, and each must be pursued at its own natural pace. Abandoning any of them halfway will cause more harm than good—though even from such failures, we can learn valuable lessons.
Reflecting on this truth, I wrote this song.
Secular Song 685 – The Goal
1
In this worldly life,
Forever running,
Seeking to reach
Some unknown thing—
2
Not knowing
What that “one” is,
We keep on
Running blindly.
3
Without contentment
In what we have reached,
We set the next
As our new goal—
4
And keep on
Running forward;
This alone
Is the truth here.
5
To hold one goal
Firm in the mind,
And run straight
Towards that alone—
6
Though this truth
Is well known,
We forget it
And keep running.
7
The running itself
Becomes the goal,
So the race
Never stops.
8
Until we run,
Collapse in exhaustion,
And fall to death—
There is no other way.

Secular Song 681:

Secular Song 681:
1
9
कल बन जाएगा;
अपने आने वाले दिन;

Secular Song 682 –

Secular Song 683 –

Secular Song 684 –
मैं झुक गया;
6
झुकना सीखो;
7
9
“यह सिखाई नहीं जाती;

Secular Song 685 –
1
