Secular Song 691

Old Age

Another senior citizen called to inquire about my health, saying he had heard I was not doing well. After some conversation, I told him, “I am fine, but these physical ailments are simply part of the old age journey.” When we say, “I am not well,” what we are really saying is, “I am growing older.” Once we accept this truth, the daily lament of “not feeling well” transforms into a kind of mantra for self-reflection, even meditation.

Take, for instance, my present condition. Yes, I have back pain and heel pain. Added to this now the pilonidal sinus has now resurfaced. It makes it difficult for me to sit or stand for long periods. Regular exercise worsens the pain: if I avoid exercise, my back stiffens; if I try to exercise, the tailbone pain intensifies. My brother-in-law advises complete bed rest, though he himself remains surprisingly active.

In the spring of youth, we command our bodies and shape our days, bending life to our plans. But in old age, the order reverses: life shapes us, and the body dictates its own rules. Our thoughts turn more often to yesterday, carrying fragments of who we once were into the present moment. The future itself begins to feel like an echo of the past. So when we say “not well,” we are not merely describing symptoms—we are whispering a quiet truth: that we are walking deeper into the country of age.

Voice of the Heart 691 — This Is Old Age

When sleep arrives, quietly receive it;
When troubles rise, endure and forgive.
This is old age—learn to perceive it,
Walk with wisdom, softly live.

Youth’s bright season has drifted away;
Now old age waits at the door.
Body and mind no longer obey
The words they once followed before.

We ran and toiled without a pause,
We lived our lives for others’ cause.
That busy time has slipped away;
Now comes the restful, quiet day.

Without clinging to memories past,
Without craving for things anew,
If today departs, let it be enough—
Live with this thought, serene and true.

Understand: even this is for good,
This truth the heart must learn.
Without expectation, day by day,
Let the wheel of life still turn.

Withdraw a little, lighten needs,
Set burdens down, release the load;
Until the end, with quiet grace,
Walk softly on the fading road.

The world will never wait for you,
Nor turn to watch what you pursue.
You cannot keep its racing pace,
So tears and laments find no place.

Yet there’s a world that is your own—
Learn to dwell where seeds are sown.
Leave a space for souls who near,
And hold a heart to draw them near.

When they arrive, receive with grace,
Serve them well in time and place.
Bless their path as they depart,
Then live the life that’s left at heart.

Secular Song 692

After my regular sādhana, I read three or four books, a few pages from each. Then I usually listen to an important video on philosophy or some other interesting subject. That night, after my regular reading, I searched YouTube for something I could listen to. I never scroll continuously; I select one programme and listen to it until the end.

As I could not find anything that caught my interest, I began listening to some Carnatic music. But even that did not hold my attention for long. So I closed my mobile and decided to spend the rest of the time, until I went to bed, simply sitting in silence.

But that turned out to be the most difficult task—not only for me, but perhaps for anyone. Though no one lives with me and I therefore have no one with whom I need to talk, I am still living with myself. I cannot completely stop talking. Similarly, whenever I listen to a programme, I usually do some cross-stitch work at the same time. Thus, almost every second of my life is accompanied by some kind of activity.

Of course, no human being can live without activity. And remaining inactive is itself another kind of activity—perhaps more difficult than doing something. I then began reflecting on my own life at this stage. Out of that reflection came the inspiration for this song.

It reminded me of the famous verse from the Bhagavad Gītā:

karmany akarma yaḥ paśyed …

“Whoever sees action in inaction and inaction in action—he is truly wise; he has accomplished his work.”

Perhaps I have not yet reached that state. As Arunagirināthar says in the Kandar Anubhūti, even when he was told simply to “be still” and “remain without words,” he admits that he did not understand that supreme state.

Kandar Anubhūti

{Kandar Anubhūti

“Be still; speak no more,” they told me—
Ah, that great truth! I understood nothing of it. — 12

When absorption is gone, when worldly speech and thought are gone,
When knowledge is gone, and ignorance too is gone—
That alone is the state. — 42

Perhaps I too have yet to master that art of simply being still—without speech, without action, without even the thought of being inactive.

Until then, I say something, do something, and somehow keep life moving.

Secular Song 692

I Keep Life Moving

What shall I say now?
I really do not know.
What shall I do now?
I cannot quite tell so.

A life with neither
Word nor deed to show—
Has not yet awakened
Somewhere in me, I know.

Keeping silent is easy,
It is not hard at all,
When there is nobody
To whom I can call.

And yet I cannot keep
My silence all the same,
For I live here with myself—
And myself knows my name.

To live without doing
Is not easy, I know;
For when that too becomes
An act, where can I go?

Thinking over these things,
I pause and wonder then:
What is this thing called life?
I cannot say it even.

Till speech and action both
Come quietly to rest,
Caught somewhere in between,
I do what I can best.

I say a thing or two,
I do a thing or two,
And keep this life moving—
What else is there to do?

Secular Song 693

As I am celebrating Diwali in solitude, I recall my old and golden days with my parents and siblings. We would eagerly wait for the arrival of our elder brothers, as they would bring extra crackers for us to play with.

Apart from new clothes and sweets, the real festival was the celebration of relationships. We can see this everywhere in the world. Festivals are not merely about the things we exchange; they are about the people with whom we share them.

Of course, for a sannyāsi, celebrating a festival in solitude is perfectly natural. But for others, instead of merely ordering and sending sweets and other gifts online, even a brief visit or a phone call can bring a joy that digital greetings alone cannot provide. Otherwise, in our effort to make festivals convenient, we may unknowingly deprive ourselves of their real joy—the joy of being together.

As I sat quietly, immersed in the silence around me in the āśram, memories of those old days returned. Just then, my sister called to convey her Diwali greetings. Out of that moment of memory, solitude, and affection, I wrote this song.

Voice of heart, Song 693 Festival

Though we may drift apart,
Though we may remain in touch,
The bond of kinship continues—
This truth we must understand.

Such a bond, once lost,
Is difficult to regain;
So let us always hold
Its preciousness in our hearts.

Whatever differences
May arise among us,
There is no life in this world
That can live without relationship.

Strike water with your hand—
The water will not stay apart;
Why else would our elders
Have left us this proverb?

Those born together
From one mother’s womb
Will never again receive
The chance to be born so.

Knowing this truth,
Living and mingling with kin,
A life lived together
Is truly the higher life.

For this very purpose
Come the festivals:
Invite our loved ones,
And share our greetings.

Honour the dignity
Of this human life;
Rejoice together with our kin,
And celebrate the festival!

Voice of the Mind 694

As I sat quietly in the ashram, embraced by silence, I found myself reflecting on the many phases of my life. Each stage seemed like a wave that rose and fell without my full awareness — I came without knowing why, I lived without understanding how. And yet, must I truly know? For in this endless rhythm of coming and going, knowing and forgetting, life itself seems to repeat its course like an ancient chant that no one began and no one can end.

I am not the first to ponder such thoughts, nor shall I be the last. This cycle of birth and reflection, thought and repetition, will continue as long as the human mind exists — ever questioning, ever seeking, yet never reaching final knowing.

Still, within this ceaseless motion, there arises at times a moment of quiet — a stillness where the mind stops seeking, and simply is. In that calm, reflection itself becomes the purpose; not to find answers, but to rest in awareness. For me, that quietness — that simple seeing — is the true meaning of life.

Voice of the Mind 694:  Why all this — for what?

We came not knowing,

We lived not understanding,

Life, a fleeting breeze,

Rushed past and was gone.

We came for others,

We lived for ourselves,

Thus thinking so,

All men lived their span.

Born for others,

Living for self —

But why, for what,

None ever knew.

Yet even this became habit,

Life too turned

Into a jest —

And drifted away.

They came and went,

New ones arrived,

Thus endless became

This flowing chain.

Amidst this coming and going,

We too had

Our passing part

In the play of time.

Therefore, why should we know

For what purpose we came?

Why should we live

With any understanding?

Unknowing we came,

Unaware we lived,

Departing alone —

That alone remains.

Secular song 695

“Blessed are those who first practise and then preach. Otherwise, we will end up biting more than what we can chew.”

Secular Song 695 😂 Preaching to the World

When we give
An answer to others,
It turns back smartly —
And becomes our answer!

Unable to accept,
Unable to reject,
Our situation today —
What a grand tamasha!

“How simple it is!”
We told them always,
“To accept or reject —
It’s your choice, always!”

But when the same
Comes knocking at our door,
We stand there blank,
Not knowing the score.

Unable to chew,
Unable to swallow,
We choke and gasp —
Our pride turns hollow!

So, to escape,
We make a plan —
“Spit it out quick,
And run if you can!”

The thing that got caught
Halfway down the track —
From hand to mouth
But never to the stomach —

That very same gem
We gave others to chew,
And when they too spit —
We scold them! Oh, who knew?

This is what
The wise men said:
“Don’t preach to others —
Practise instead!”

Tell only what
You’ve done yourself,
And if you can,
Help someone else.

But who will listen
To words like these?
Among that crowd,
I too freeze.

Otherwise, why write,
Why speak, why shout?
This preaching act —
What’s that about?

முதுமை இங்கு வந்தாச்சு;

தேவைதன்னை குறைத்துக் கொண்டு;

संकट आए तो सह ही जाना;

बुढ़ापा आकर खड़ा हुआ;

दूसरों के लिए ही जीए सभी;

न नए की चाह में रोको सब;

सच्चाई को अपनाई है;

ज़रूरतें अपनी घटा लो;

दिल में इसे सदा संजोता;

पुरखों का यही कहा सत्य ठहरता;

संबंधों में रस घोलो;

मिलो, बाँटो, मनाओ हर्ष;

Voice of the Mind 694

Voice of the Mind 694: “किसलिए यह सब?”
