BT Songs 1766 to 1770

BT Song 1766

There is a saying that a friend is someone with whom you do not need to explain yourself. Yet such understanding grows through the mutual understanding that develops between two people in friendship. But when it comes to God, there is no such requirement. Even before we attempt to explain ourselves, He understands us.

Therefore, all the words we use to explain ourselves and share our needs are secondary. Simply entering His presence, even when we cannot utter a word to explain our situation or express what is within us, may itself be a deeper prayer than all the words we could use—including the words of these poems.

BT Song1766

I Understand, Yet I Cannot Say

That word I seek,
I search for it each day;
Through it I long to tell
What I am within. 1

In every language
That I have known till now,
Why is it that this word
Has never come to me? 2

Something my heart desires,
Something it longs to find;
What exactly it may be,
Even I somehow understand. 3

And yet I have no way
Of putting it into words;
The opportunity to speak of it
Has not yet come. 4

If it is the need
Of body and mind,
There are a thousand words
In this world to say it. 5

But if it is the need
Of the very soul,
For that there are words
In the sacred scriptures. 6

Beyond all these,
There is something more;
How am I to reach it?
Even the way I do not know. 7

If I did not understand it,
And it simply remained so,
I could say, “Let it be,”
And quietly leave it behind. 8

But if I understand it
And yet cannot express it,
To whom can I go
And ask about it? 9

So once again
I have come to You,
Understanding, yet unable to speak,
And suffering in this helplessness. 10

Understand what I am,
Understand what it is,
And somehow, in whatever way,
Bring it to fulfilment. 11

BT Song 1767

A fish does not need to understand its need for water in order to live in it. Similarly, a bhakta may not always recognise the Grace in which she lives. It is often when she experiences its absence that she comes to understand what Grace truly means.

One can find this longing expressed in the songs of many bhakti saints throughout India. Narottama Dāsa Ṭhākura expresses it beautifully through the images of a fish longing for water and the cātaka bird longing for the raincloud:

jala binu yena mīna, duḥkha pāya āyu-hīna,

prema binu sei mata bhakta.

cātaka jalada-gati, emati ekānta-rīti,

yei jāne sei anurakta.

“As a fish without water suffers and becomes lifeless, so a devotee without divine love (prema) suffers in the same way. As the cātaka bird longs exclusively for the raincloud, so is the single-minded devotee devoted to divine love.” Narottama Dāsa Ṭhākura, Prema-bhakti-candrikā, verse 80.

The bhakta may not always recognise the Grace in which she lives, but when that Grace seems absent, she discovers how completely dependent she has always been upon it.

BT Song 1767 Live Each Day
with Him

Live with Him Every single day,

And then see what happens;

After that come and tell me. 1

He will give you courage,
He will come as your support;

When you stumble and fall,
He will embrace you upon His shoulder. 2

He will raise you
Like a mother,

Protect you
Like a father,

Be with you
Like an elder brother,

And join you
As a friend. 3

Though this may seem
Like a dream,

Though others may dismiss it
As mere imagination. 4

Those who have tasted
His grace surrounding them

Will know
The truth of this. 5

Only when it leaves
The water behind

Will the fish know
How much it needs the water. 6

Only when you live
Apart from Him

Will you then understand
His greatness. 7

Those who live each day
In that greatness

Will know
His true nature. 8

Therefore, live
In that greatness,

And every day
Rejoice in His grace. 9

Listen to what
The devotee who lives thus says,

And in the same way,
You too live each day. 10

BT Song 1768

This song is a meditation on the mystery of living in God’s presence. It is not an attempt to explain God through philosophical concepts or theological doctrines. Rather, it expresses the conviction that God is known through the lived experience of walking with Him each day.

Life rarely unfolds according to our desires. We make plans, cherish hopes, and seek meaning, yet events often take an unexpected course. The song is not trying to explain why life happens as it does; it is asking how we are to walk with God when we do not understand what is happening.

It does not interpret life in terms of fatalism, karma, or predestination, nor does it advocate passive resignation. Instead, it bears witness to a relationship of trust in which one continues to walk with God, believing that He is present even when life takes unforeseen turns.

Words such as “fate,” “free will,” or “God’s will” are ultimately limited. They are attempts to describe a reality that transcends language. Scripture, theology, philosophy, and interpretation may illuminate this experience, but they remain only footnotes to the living encounter with God. The experience itself cannot be fully captured in words; it can only be lived.

The song therefore ends with a simple prayer: “Make me that experience itself. Lead me day by day, and let me continue to follow wherever You lead.” In that daily companionship lies the deepest understanding of God.

In one of his songs, Kannadasan describes a devotee questioning God. God replies that only through experience can one receive the answers to life’s questions. When the devotee asks, if experience is inevitable, what then is the purpose of God, the answer is that God Himself is encountered through the experiences of life through which we come to know Him. See the song at the end.

BT Song 1768 I Follow Behind You

I wish that every day and hour
Would pass in goodness and grace;
I wish that every day
I might remember You and praise.

Yet even with such a longing,
What happens is something else;
Life takes its own strange course,
Quite different from what one tells.

Good or bad, the days go by;
Whether I remember or forget,
Time keeps moving on,
And every moment passes yet.

So, as time moves on this way,
Is the choice really in our hands?
Are we the ones who decide
Where the journey finally stands?

Should I say, “I walk the path
That destiny has laid for me”?
Or, “I simply follow the mind
And live as reason tells me”?

Or should I find my consolation
In thinking, “I live by Your will,”
And take comfort in believing
That Your purpose guides me still?

Yet all these are only
A play of words we say;
What truly happens to us
Is the only experience that stays.

There are no words with which
That experience can be told;
And yet to live according to it
Is truth, as I behold.

Therefore, become that very experience;
Take hold of me every day,
Possess me and lead me onward,
Guide me along Your way.

What does it matter how time passes,
Or where the passing years may run?
So long as I keep following You—
I shall go behind You, my One.

Gurukulam, August 3, night,
11.30

I asked, “What does it mean to be born?”

God said, “Be born and see!”

I asked, “What does it mean to learn?”

God said, “Learn and see!”

I asked, “What is knowledge?”

God said, “Know and see!”

I asked, “What is love?”

God said, “Give and see!”

I asked, “What is affection?”

God said, “Share and see!”

I asked, “What is the joy of a wife?”

God said, “Marry and see!”

I asked, “What is a child?”

God said, “Have one and see!”

I asked, “What is old age?”

God said, “Grow old and see!”

I asked, “What is poverty?”

God said, “Suffer and see!”

I asked, “What comes after death?”

God said, “Die and see!”

“If life can be known only through experience,

then, O Lord, why are You needed?”

I asked.

The Lord came a little closer,

and said,

“I am experience itself!”

BT Song 1769

Though the dark night of the soul is part of the spiritual life, as one matures in bhakti, one need not depend upon feelings and emotions to sustain devotion. The absence of emotional experience does not mean the absence of God. Greater maturity does not lessen love; it makes love less dependent upon feeling.

BT Song 1769 The Inner Awareness

Knowing You as You are,
Feeling You deep within,
I too walk
Along Your way. 1

Even when feeling fades,
Even when dryness comes,
I know that I remain
Within that inner awareness. 2

Though the love
I held at the beginning
May now appear
As though it were no more, 3

As the years pass
And experience matures,
Love too keeps growing
Until it reaches fulfilment. 4

The love that dawns
In the days of youth
Keeps growing,
And finds its fullness in old age. 5

After that fullness
Has finally come,
I too live
In it, day after day. 6

Knowing it from the beginning,
Growing within it,
And living with You
Each and every day, 7

Beyond all feelings,
Joined with You in relationship,
Walking with You
Is enough for me. 8

BT Song 1770

This is a famous Tamil statement, which Christians often use to explain the reason God created us. However, the bhakti tradition in Hinduism goes beyond the idea of worship and points towards a relationship or fellowship with God. God created the Ātman not merely to worship Him, but to enter into relationship with Him.

It is interesting to note that there is no account in Genesis of Adam praising or worshipping God before the Fall. Rather, God Himself came seeking Adam and Eve in order to have fellowship with them. It is only after the Fall that the human response to God is presented in terms of worship.

As a bhakta, I too often seek such fellowship with the Lord and try to offer myself to Him. I understand this to be one of the purposes for which He has given me bhakti. I am still not sure why God created everything. But I know that, having received bhakti, I want to use this life for the fellowship for which He has drawn me to Himself.

BT Song 1770  Seeking Relationship

Even if we sing with our lips
And offer words of praise,
Even if we bow our heads
And worship Him. 1

If it is done without
A relationship within the heart,
All these acts
Will become empty. 2

Did He create us
Only to praise and worship Him,
Is that all
For which we were made? 3

For countless messengers
Are already there
Before Him,
To do all these things. 4

Beyond all these,
What is it that He sought?
Tell me, for what purpose
Did He create us? 5

Even nature
Sings His praise;
All that moves
Offers worship to Him. 6

Yet He created us
Seeking something
That is not found
Among all those others. 7

That relationship
Which He seeks
Exists nowhere
Except with us. 8

When we come
Seeking that relationship,
To grant it to Him—
That is the blessing indeed. 9

நல்லதோ, கெட்டதோ, நாளும் போகுது;

ஆயினும், இவையெல்லாம் வார்த்தையின் ஜாலம்;

அதனைக் கூற மொழி ஏதும் இல்லை;

BT Song 1769

BT Song 1770
