These days I am typing a thesis on Emily Dickinson for Shashikant of Mahari (Rewa, M.P.). Her poems are obscure and without some help, I cannot understand them. But, surprisingly, few of her poems are realistic, down to the earth and very simple to understand. The following one impressed me very much. Living as a recluse, she would not have lived as she wished in this poem. Whereas when God provided such a life of wandering man to me, where there came several opportunities to serve others, why should I regret it? Then I wrote this poem. Though I never like to give counseling, still I like to do service physically to others as much as possible. That’s why I never hesitate to cook when I visit my shishyas homes for them when they want to taste South Indian food, particularly Sambar and Idli. Most of them remember me for the food that I cooked not my teachings.!!! And I am happy about it.
72 Not living in vain
If I get an opportunity
To give a cup of water to another person
This life which I live on this earth
Is not mere waste
If I get an opportunity
To wipe out the tears of others
This life which I live on this earth
Is not mere waste
If I get an opportunity
To share in the sorrow of another person
This life which I live on this earth
Is not mere waste
If I get an opportunity
To mend the broken heart of another person
As much as possible
This life not a waste
In this funny life
In which we will go as we came
If we get an opportunity to serve others
Our life will never become a waste
