BT Songs 986 to 990

BT Song 986

As I watched one young Jain girl taking sannyasa, and the way her parents and other family members cried on that occasion, it deeply moved my heart. In her interview, that girl said that once she was ready to take the deeksha, she eagerly looked forward to that day. Added to this, when I was compiling my quotations, the following quote from Sudhakar also touched me deeply: “…The creative tension between identification and involvement on the one hand and separation and withdrawal on the other hand has always existed in Christianity. Christians are bidden to be in the world but also to be different from the world…” — Wilhelmina Sudhakar, Chosen to Serve: The Life and Writings of Paul Sudhakar, 2007, p. 14.

To me, the temptation to share more about my thoughts and life in the Lord with others through my poems and articles is also a kind of desire and attachment. On one hand, I want to share; on the other hand, I want to remain a more private person and a recluse, in letter and spirit. As I sat for my meditation and reflection, the words of that Jain girl came to my mind again, and I wrote this song as my prayer of the day. Of course, after closing my prayer, I asked myself, ‘What do you actually mean by renunciation?’ As it was already midnight (12:15 am), I said, ‘First renounce this so-called thought and reflection and go to bed. That is true renunciation for you.’ Then silently, I went to bed but was unable to sleep for a long time as I continued to think about it.

Song 986: Embracing Renunciation

Not for the world’s gaze I strive,

But in union with thee, I thrive.

In your presence, I abide,

With your peace as my guide.

Earthly fame, wealth’s allure,

Transient, fleeting, not secure.

The pleasures here, brief in span,

Nothing eternal in the mortal plan.

Though endowed with wisdom’s light,

Yet, self-renunciation takes flight.

In the guise of a seeker, I roam,

Yet, true renunciation’s not yet home.

Intellect grasps, yet heart’s shy,

Without whole surrender, I lie.

Oh Lord, grant me mastery true,

To relinquish self, and embrace you.

Yearning for your grace divine,

At your feet, my soul incline.

Oh, noble one, show me the way,

To bear your yoke, come what may.

Mathigiri, 9-10-2018, 11.30 p.m.

BT Song 986: Should Renounce

Not to live for the world to see

But living with you

Keeping me in you

And living with you

Carrying the peace

Which you give

I should sing each day

Thinking of your grace

Fame along with wealth

Is not permanent

The pleasures of this earthly life

Are not eternal

I haven’t seen

So far

In this fleeting life

Anything permanent

Though you gave

Knowledge to understand this

I don’t have the courage

To renounce myself

Though I live with the

Attire of a sannyasi

I haven’t realized

Renunciation in its fullness

Though I understood it intellectually

Unless I accept it with my whole heart

Oh my Lord, I don’t have

Victory over myself

When I come to your feet

With much pain thinking about it

It is not good on your part

Not to receive me

Oh noble one,

I should follow you

By taking up my cross

By renouncing myself

You should give that

Noble status of

Carrying your yoke

Which is very light

Mathigiri, 9-10-2018, 11.30 p.m.

BT Song 987

See: Cerebral versus emotional bhakti

Song 987: Unveiling the Mask

Like a cloud, fleeting and gone,

Like fog, vanishing at dawn.

Simplicity in devotion’s plea,

Yet, futile it seems to be.

Within, unchanged I remain,

No thoughts for thee to reign.

Living as I choose, with disguise,

How long can I keep up these lies?

Understanding dawns, yet no aid,

In my anguish, your touch delayed.

Tears shed, longing for your grace,

Endless waits in this endless race.

What’s the reason for your delay?

In my agony, let me not stray.

Yearning for that initial love,

Your grace, like manna from above.

Until you grant this love divine,

At your feet, I’ll forever pine.

Washing your feet with my tears,

In devotion, I conquer fears.

Mathigiri, 10-10-2018, 11.30 p.m. Hosea 6:4

BT Song 987: How Can You Understand?

Like a cloud

It is gone

Like the fog

It disappeared

How much simpler

Bhakti has become

There is no use in

Living as a bhakta

There is no true

Change within me

I don’t have the thought

To live for you

I live

As I like

But I put on a mask

For the world

How long can I

Act this drama?

How long can I live

Deceiving myself?

Even after understanding this

You don’t have concern for me

You didn’t save me

By redeeming me

I shed tears

Thinking about my condition

I longed thinking

When you will touch me

What is the reason

For further delay?

Is it right on your part

To leave me alone to suffer?

I need that

First love for you

For that, I need

Your grace

Until you bestow that to me

I won’t leave your feet

Even if you delay further

I won’t go anywhere

By washing your feet

With my tears

I will remain

Falling at your feet

Even after knowing

My nature

By delaying further

What are you going to gain?

Whether you spank me or hug me

It is going to be your hands

In one way it is

A gain for me

In both

Your hands will fall on me

But how are you going to understand

This calculation of mine?

Mathigiri, 10-10-2018, 11.30 p.m. Hosea 6:4

BT Song 988

As I began my regular night walk in the hall, I was reflecting on the response I was typing for a book. Though I managed to understand the main subject of the book and recorded my response, I am still not sure I understood all the complications, not only of bhakti but also of life on this earth. Then I said to myself in Tamil that I am living without knowing one thing properly (maybe cross-stitch could be an exception). Then I said to the Lord, ‘Anyhow, whatever my lack of understanding might be, I should only seek your grace.’ Though I didn’t want the so-called inspiration to disturb my night walk, as it continued to nag me, I finally succumbed to its pressure and wrote this song. After writing one paragraph, I would continue my walk and think further, then stop and write the next stanza. Like this, before completing my night walk, I wrote this song as part of my meditation.

Song 988: Dwell Within Me

In ignorance, I trod this earth,

Seeking only your divine worth.

Though mysteries cloud my sight,

Your grace alone brings true light.

Unable to comprehend, yet clear,

You are divine, ever near.

In devotion, I find my place,

To worship you, my saving grace.

Beyond intellect, I strive to know,

Through everyday devotion, I grow.

Living each day in communion true,

With you, dwelling within me anew.

Mathigiri, 12-10-2018, 10.10 p.m.

BT Song 988: You Should Dwell Within Me

Though I live not knowing anything on this earth

I should seek only your grace

Somehow completing the race on this earth

I should reach your feet for sure

Though thousands of things remain unclear

I should understand you who understand me

Whatever might be the burden of this world

Your grace which you bestow is enough for me

Though I don’t have the capacity to understand clearly

I should clearly understand that you are God

By receiving the blessedness of living as your bhakta

I should have the boon only to worship you

Though I analyze with my brain

I should go beyond my intellect

I should experience that status

Only through bhakti in everyday life

I should attain that blissful status of

Living each day having fellowship with you

For this, you should dwell within me

By having fellowship with me

Mathigiri, 12-10-2018, 10.10 p.m.

BT Song 989

As I continued to type my reflection on Warren and Hooker, sometimes I wanted to give up even this kind of writing. In one way, I became tired of even such reading, reflecting, and recording my response. They all go in an eternal cycle without achieving any purpose in life, particularly for my bhakti. So as I was thinking about it during my meditation time, I said to the Lord, ‘Finally, I have to come only to your feet.’ Then I wrote this song as my prayer of the day.

Song 989: A Departure

To you, I finally turn my face,

My journey ends in your embrace.

All knowledge, thought, and strife,

Mere dust in the tapestry of life.

Reasoning and debates in vain,

In death, they hold no gain.

With the life left, I seek your grace,

In your refuge, my soul finds place.

Heart yearns, mind confounds,

In this dance, the soul astounds.

My fate, in your hands, I plea,

Grant me what my soul needs to be free.

A final plea to thee, my Lord,

No longer as before, I must afford.

Mathigiri, 13-10-2018, 11.30 p.m.

BT Song 989: Not Possible as Before

Finally, I should come to you

And keep myself within you

However I have lived so far

Hereafter I should reach your feet

What all I read, thought, and wrote

Won’t be useful even like the dust of the feet

However I reason and argue

They won’t help me when I die

For the rest of the life which is left to me

I should seek your feet by taking refuge there

Thinking that today I am going to die

I should only cling to your feet

On one side, my heart is seeking you

On the other side, my intellect inspires my thinking

Caught between them both

The atman alone swings in between them

Even after knowing this, my condition

What do you have as your will for me?

Whatever it might be

What is my requirement, you should do accordingly

Therefore, to tell my heart

This slave came one more time to you

I cannot live like before

You should keep it in your mind

Mathigiri, 13-10-2018, 11.30 p.m.

BT Song 990

After writing my response to Hooker’s statement that ‘the gift of grace’ is unintelligible to Hindus, before going to bed, I again reflected on this subject. Grace is important in the bhakti tradition in Hinduism, and all that I know about it came to my mind. I recalled several such poems in the Bhakti tradition, particularly in Tiruvasagam by Manikkavasagar. It is rightly said that: if one’s heart is not melting to the verse of Tiruvasagam, it won’t melt to any other verse (in any scripture). The way Manikkavasagar portrays the grace of God will melt one’s heart if they can read and enjoy it in the original Tamil. No translation can convey the deep meaning in it.

However, I found in the Lord a new kind of meaning and interpretation of the same grace. As I wrote in another song, He gave ‘grace’ even to the grace by demonstrating it on the cross. So as I began to reflect upon it, I wrote this song as my prayer for the day.

…In the village, all giving for weddings, etc., is done on a karma-like basis. If I give you ten rupees and three yards of cloth when someone in your family gets married, you will note it in a book, and when someone in my family gets married, you will give me ten rupees and three yards of cloth. In such a society, the idea of grace in a gift is unintelligible; perhaps it can only become intelligible over a long period of years. Words are part of the problem, but I would want to press the issue a lot further than words. (Hooker to Warren, 17 January 1970). — Graham Kings, Christianity Connected: Hindus, Muslims and the World in the Letters of Max Warren and Roger Hooker, New Delhi, (2002), Indian Edition, ISPCK, 2017, p. 260.

BT Song 990: Understood

I understood

The unique grace

I came to praise you

Thinking only that

In this life on earth

In which I lived without understanding

I realized the

New change that you gave

Though the word

Grace is a simple one

I understood the depth

Which is in it

Though many gave

Different kinds of explanation to it

I understood your explanation

Which you demonstrated by coming to this world

Though the noble ones

Found the meaning that

It is the

Undeserving kindness of God

Though I didn’t

Understand it clearly

I understood it

After you redeemed me by seeking me

But as I often

Miss it

I made it a very simple one

Which is indeed a very rare one

Though this

Became my habit

When I thought about

Your compassion for me

Then I

Understood it clearly

When I think about it

This song of praise was born

Therefore, O my Lord

I understood your grace

Which you gave me

To sing your praises every day

Mathigiri, 16-10-18, 11.45 p.m.

BT Song 986:
