BT Song 1556

When I was reading the following lines from Rumi, I immediately stopped reading and wrote this song.

From Rumi:

                                        “But there’s no one

in there but you. Everyone else has left.

Who makes you sit still so long?”

“The one who keeps me in here is the one

who keeps you out there.

The same who will not let you in will not let me out.”

The ocean will not allow its fish out of itself.

Nor does it let land animals in

where the subtle and delicate fish move.

The land creatures lumber along on the ground.

No cleverness can change this.  There’s only one

opener for the lock of these matters.

Forget your figuring.  Forget yourself.  Listen to your Friend.

When you become totally obedient to that one,

you’ll be free.—The Servant who Loved his Prayers, Coleman Barks, The Essential Rumi, New York, HarperCollins, 2004 [1995], p. 90

BT Song 1556 A Call

Simple English

When the servant,

Who went to pray,

Came back late,

The Master called and asked:

“When everyone had left,

What were you doing there?

Why didn’t you come back

Right after the prayer?”

“The One who called me

Kept me with Him,

Not allowing me

To come back to you.”

When the servant

Gave this reply,

The Master, upset,

Asked again:

“The One who didn’t let you

Come inside

Also didn’t

Send me back.

The One who gave

Water for fish to live

And land for other

Animals to live

But the One who

Made this law of nature

Won’t give

A reason for this.

So if you too,

Deny yourself

And listen to His call,

When you begin

To obey Him,

You too will get

The same freedom.”

When the servant

Gave this reply,

The Master also

Understood his situation.

But when the call

For prayer was given again,

We don’t know for sure

What he did.

When many

Refuse to answer His call,

He lets only

A few come in.

Until you choose

Whether to go inside

Or stay outside,

I can’t think about you,

Because I have already

Received my call

And I have to go in

Before He shuts the door”

Gurukulam, 7-1-24, 10.50 p.m.

BT Song 1556 A Call

 Classical English

When the servant,

Who went to offer prayer,

Returned late,

The Master called him and asked:

“When all had departed,

What task detained thee there?

Why didst thou not return

Immediately after the Namaz?”

“The One who summoned me

Kept me by His side,

Refusing to permit

My return to thee.”

When the servant

Gave this response,

Again, in anger,

The Master queried:

“The One who forbade

Thy entry in,

Also withheld

My return.

The One who provided

Water for fish to dwell,

And land for other

Creatures to reside,

But He who

Enacted this law of nature

Will not furnish

A reason for it.

Therefore, if thou,

Also deny thyself,

And hearken to His call,

When thou beginnest

To obey Him,

Thou too shalt

Receive the same liberation.”

When the servant

Gave this reply,

The Master also

Comprehended his plight.

But when once more

The call for Namaz was given,

We know not for certain

What his actions were.

When many

Decline His call,

He admits but

A few within.

Until thou choosest

Whether to enter in

Or remain without,

I have no time for thee,

For I have already

Answered my call

Therefore I am rushing

Before the door is shut”.

Gurukulam, 7-1-24, 10.50 p.m.

 BT Song 1557 Commentary

I want to give up everything: reading, writing, thinking, and interacting. Though I returned to the ashram to spend time in solitude, the way I remain busy—very, very busy—disturbs me a lot. I calculate every second and try not to waste any time. I’m not sure anyone else would remain as busy as I am now. Even when I go to the restroom and sit on the commode, I do exercises (neck and eye movements) to save a few minutes from my exercise time. When I do kitchen work, I do several things simultaneously—heating food, filling water, cutting fruit, etc.

But when I was working on the computer, I suddenly became very tired and began to shed tears, thinking about my wretched condition. My mother is gone. Now I stay alone here for most of the day (almost 23 hours), yet I remain very busy.

As I began to cry, I became very upset with God and rebuked Him, which resulted in this song. What else can I do? Even He is not ready to stop this incessant inspiration and urge to write. It’s pitiful indeed, as He does not show His mercy upon me to save me from my burnout.

BT Song 1557: You Will Be in Trouble

Simple English

1. Are you still making me dance?

As if it wasn’t enough that I’ve danced so far.

2. Are you still making me run continuously?

As if it wasn’t enough that I’ve run so far.

3. What benefit are you going to gain?

I cannot understand your will so far.

4. Did I do the dances that I have done to tell you?

Or how to tell you all the races that I have run so far?

5. Look at my situation as I stand,

Dead tired from running a lot.

6. When am I going to remain silent?

When am I going to stand still?

7. Though I remain in solitude without others,

When will the roars of my heart end?

8. After knowing well why I came to you,

Is it right on your part not to bestow what I seek?

9. Do you not know for sure

what further you have to do for me?

10. Did I ever ask anything that is impossible for you?

If it is not possible for you, at least tell me that clearly.

11. It is indeed wrong on your part to pretend

as if you don’t know what I am asking for.

12. Stopping all reading, writing, thinking, and talking,

And sitting silently at your feet.

13. You should also bestow a situation where you do not talk,

And I do not listen.

14. Not doing that, if you continue to force me to act,

Then you alone will face a lot of troubles.

Gurukulam, 10-1-24, 7.45 pm.

BT Song 1557: Thou Shalt Be Troubled

Classical English

1. Dost thou still compel me to dance?

As if not enough hath I danced thus far.

2. Dost thou still force me to run ceaselessly?

As if not enough hath I run thus far.

3. What benefit dost thou seek to gain?

I comprehend not thy will thus far.

4. Hath I performed the dances merely to recount them to thee?

Or how to narrate the countless races I have endured?

5. Behold my plight as I stand,

Utterly wearied from relentless running.

6. When shall I dwell in silence?

When shall I remain still?

7. Though I dwell in solitude, bereft of company,

When shall the tumult of my heart cease?

8. Knowing well the reason for my coming unto thee,

Is it just for thee to withhold that which I seek?

9. Dost thou not know with certainty what thou must do for me?

10. Hath I ever requested aught impossible for thee?

If it be beyond thy power, at least declare it plainly.

11. Indeed, it is unjust for thee to feign ignorance of my desires.

12. Ceasing all reading, writing, pondering, and discoursing,

Sitting silently at thy feet.

13. Thou shouldst also grant a state where thou speakest not,

And I hearken not.

14. Shouldst thou persist in compelling me to act,

Then thou alone shalt face grievous troubles.

Gurukulam, 10-1-24, 7.45 pm.

 BT Song 1558 Commentary

I know God gave me the same kind of life He gives everyone else. At the same time, I am searching for something different from normal life. I don’t know what it is. Sometimes I think I understand it, but other times I am not sure. But as this tussle in life continues, even such abnormality has now become a normal part of my life.

BT Song 1558 Not became a burden

 Simple English

I don’t want to

Live for myself,

But I can’t

Live for you either.

I am living

Each day as usual,

But I don’t know

Why I do it.

You never made me

In a special way,

And I never lived

Any special kind of life.

At the same time,

I don’t live like others.

I never tried

To do that.

You gave

What is common for all,

And you provided

The same for me too.

But I am seeking

Something different,

Though I cannot understand

What it is.

I am not sure whether

It actually exists or not.

If it exists, I don’t know

What it actually is.

You never

Spoke about it,

So I don’t know

What to do next.

When it is both clear and unclear,

I am not sure

Whether to give up

Or keep seeking.

All that is clear so far

Still remains unclear.

Those things unknown

Never become unclear.

This is my true

Condition today.

But this is not

Very hard for me.

As I have been living

This way from the start,

And it has become a habit

To keep living like this.

This life never

Became a burden,

Since I am not

Living for anyone.

10-1-24, Gurukulam, 7.45 pm.

BT Song 1558 Not became a burden

 Classical English

I desire not

To live for myself,

Yet I cannot

Live for thee.

I continue to live

Each day as before,

Yet I know not

The reason why.

Thou hast not made me

In a unique manner,

Nor have I lived

A life of distinction.

Yet I live not

As others do,

Nor have I sought

To emulate them.

Thou hast granted

What is common to all,

And bestowed the same

Upon me as well.

Yet I seek

Something different,

Though I comprehend not

What it may be.

I know not whether

It truly exists,

And if it does,

What it may be.

Thou hast not

Spoken of it,

Therefore I know not

What to pursue next.

When it is both clear and obscure,

I am uncertain

Whether to relinquish it

Or continue to seek.

All that is clear thus far

Remains obscure,

Yet those unknown

Remain not unclear.

This is my true

State today,

Yet this is not

Burdensome to me.

For I have lived

Thus from the start,

And it has become

Habitual to persist.

This life has never

Become a burden,

For I live not

For anyone.

 BT Song 1559 Commentary

When my regular time to read came, I took the book but was unable to read and sat quietly. Then I began to reflect on the song that I wrote during dinner. At that time, I said to the Lord that I don’t like the life I am living at present. At the same time, I cannot live a life for Him. Then I took the paper and wrote the rest of the poems as my prayer.

BT Song 1559 He has done the mistake

 Simple English

I am living

Running from place to place,

Yet life

Isn’t moving forward.

I try to live

Relaxed and easy,

But life

Runs away quickly.

If I beg,

Life tries to dominate.

If I try to control,

It begins to beg.

But we cannot

Leave it alone

And say,

“Let it be.”

There is no use

In asking God about it,

Just as there is no use

In asking Him anything.

Poor indeed is He,

For He is also running,

Not having time

To sit leisurely.

If He had created

Only nature

And not

Human beings,

This condition

Wouldn’t have come to anyone.

There would be no place

Even for these questions.

By mistake, He has made

A great error.

But why does He

Continue with it?

When He doesn’t know

How to end it,

Why did He

Even start it?

If we go and

Ask Him about it,

He says,

“No time to answer.”

When He has to run

Like this,

How can we

Live leisurely?

At least there will come

An end to us,

But poor indeed is His condition—

What can be said?

When the Creator Himself

Has to carry such a burden,

There is no other option for us

But to live like this.

Gurukulam, 11-1-24, 8.30 am

BT Song 1559 He has done the mistake

I live my days

Running to and fro,

Yet life itself

Doth not progress.

I strive to live

In leisure and ease,

Yet life doth

Hasten away.

If I beseech,

Life seeks to dominate.

If I strive for control,

It begins to beseech.

Yet we cannot

Simply let it be,

Saying,

“Let it remain.”

There is no use

In questioning God,

For there is no

Use in asking Him.

Poor indeed is He,

For He too is running,

Lacking the time

To sit at leisure.

Had He only created

The natural world,

And not

Mankind,

This plight

Would have befallen none.

There would be no place

For these questions.

In error, He hath made

A grave mistake.

Yet why doth He

Persist in it?

When He knows not

How to end it,

Why did He

Unnecessarily begin?

If we approach

And ask Him,

He responds,

“No time to answer.”

When He must run

Thus,

How can we

Live at leisure?

At least for us

An end shall come,

But poor indeed is His condition—

What can be said?

When the Creator Himself

Must bear such a burden,

We have no choice

But to live thus.

Gurukulam, 11-1-24, 8.30 am

 BT Song 1560 Commentary

One question that often haunts my conscience is: how far do I remain faithful, at least to myself? Or am I acting a drama both to the world and to me? Do all my writings and sharing truly reflect my convictions, or are they merely a drama to deceive myself and others? Am I writing, particularly poems, only to create some records, or do I use them to genuinely express my thoughts, staying true to my own conscience? As I was reflecting on this, I wrote this song, as usual, urging God to pay immediate attention, as I now feel admitted to an emergency ward requiring intensive care.

BT Song 1560

 Simple English

I am not acting

Just for myself,

But at least staying true

To who I am.

If I live this way,

There are no words

To describe

The peace that comes.

When my own heart

Hurts me,

No treatment

Can be of use.

It will remain

A permanent wound,

And the pain will grow

As I live.

All the medicines

Given externally

Refuse to provide

A lasting cure.

They force me

To seek a permanent cure

And will lament

Until I receive it.

All the treatments

The world gives externally

Do not understand

The nature of the disease.

They try to remove

Only the symptoms,

But even in that,

They fail.

You, who know

The nature of the disease,

If you treat me

By coming to me voluntarily,

There is hope

For a lasting cure,

And it will bring comfort

Even to my heart’s pain.

I am not able

To come to you

Seeking treatment

From you now.

There is no other way

To be cured

Unless you seek me

On your own.

If you stay away,

Thinking this is just

Another one of my acts,

There is no other hope.

If you think this is

Just another act of mine,

Pretending to suffer

Severe pain,

You need not act

Another drama,

And I am in intensive care—

Please do not forget this.

Gurukulam, 11-1-24, 11.55

BT Song 1560

 Classical English

I act not

For mine own sake,

Yet I remain true

To myself.

If thus I live,

Words fail to express

The peace

That ensues.

When my own heart

Doth afflict me,

No treatment

Availeth.

It will remain

A wound eternal,

And the pain will grow

With my continued life.

All medicines

Administered outwardly

Refuse to grant

A lasting cure.

They compel me

To seek a permanent cure

And lament

Until I receive it.

All treatments

From the world without

Fail to grasp

The nature of the ailment.

They strive to remove

But the symptoms,

And in this,

They falter.

Thou, who knowest

The nature of the disease,

If thou dost treat me

By seeking me voluntarily,

There is hope

For a lasting cure,

Bringing comfort

Even to my heart’s pain.

I am not positioned

To come to thee,

Seeking treatment

From thee now.

There is no other means

For cure,

Unless thou seekest me

Of thine own accord.

If thou dost refrain,

Thinking this merely

Another of my acts,

There is no other hope.

If thou dost perceive

This as another act

Of mine, pretending

To suffer grievous pain,

Thou needst not enact

Another drama,

And I am in intensive care—

Forget not this.

 BT Song 1556 அழைப்பு

தொழுகைக்குச் சென்று

திரும்பாத அடியான்

ஆண்டை வெகுண்டு

அழைத்து அவனை        1

‘அனைவரும் சென்றும்

உனக்கென்ன வேலை

தொழுகை முடிந்தும்

நீயேன் வரலை’      2

‘அழைத்தவன் என்னை

அனுப்ப மறுத்து

உள்ளே தன்னுடன்

வைத்துக் கொண்டான்’         3

என்று அடியான்

சொன்னதும் ஆண்டை

வெகுண்டு மீண்டும்

அதட்டி கேட்க       4

‘உள்ளே உம்மை

அழைக்க மறுத்த

அவனே என்னை

அனுப்ப மறுத்தான்        5

மீனுக்கு நீரை

நீந்த அளித்தபின்

நிலத்தை மற்ற

விலங்குக்கு அளித்தான்        6

இயற்கையில் இந்த

உமக்கும் உண்டு’          9

என்று அடியான்

சொன்னதன் பின்னே

ஆண்டை உணர்ந்தான்

அவனது நிலையை       10

என்பது தெரியலை        11

வழியும் இல்லை         13

ஆரா ரணத்தின்

வலியால் துடிக்கும்

அடியான் வேதனை

நடிப்பென எண்ணி         14

நடிக்கவும் வேண்டாம்

நிலைமை அவசரம்

மறந்திட வேண்டாம்       15
