BT Song 1231
Again, the question ‘what is silence’ came to me when I read any thought about it. Though every philosophical and theological tradition tries to separate the human psyche into various parts with various terms, ultimately, for me, we are an undivided whole or indivisible whole. The best and only answer to understand and explain silence is to remain silent.
BT Song 1231: What is Silence?
Simple English Version
However I stay
Quiet with my mouth closed
Silence still
Hasn’t come inside me
When my mind
Is talking to me
I can’t understand
What silence is
With the help of intellect
Control the mind
Those who mastered the mind
Told me this
Not knowing what is mind
And what is intellect
I went and
Asked them about it
Unable to understand
All their explanations
I stay quiet
Silently again
Not knowing
What is body, what is mind,
What is intellect, and what is soul
I am confused
Without body, no soul/breath
Without soul/breath, no body
There is no name
For the feeling inside
We use many names
To call them
But there’s no way to say
This is ‘intellect’ and this is ‘mind’
Once I clearly
Understood myself
There was no need
To search more
So whatever
Silence might be
There’s no use
Talking about it

BT Song 1231: What is Silence?
Classical English Version
However I remain
Quiet by sealing my lips
Still the silence
Has not come within me
When my mind
Converse with me
I cannot fathom
What silence is
With the aid of reason
Control the mind
Those who conquer the mind
Spoke thus to me
Not discerning which is mind
And which is reason
I sought and
Asked of them
Unable to grasp
All their explanations
I remain silent
Once more
Not knowing
Which is body, which is mind,
Which is reason, and which is soul
I am bewildered
Without the body, there is no soul/breath
Without the soul/breath, there is no body
No name exists
For the sense that moves within
How many names
We use to call them
There is no way to say
This is ‘reason’ and this is ‘mind’
Once I clearly
Comprehended myself
There was no need
To search further
So whatever
Silence might be
There is no use
In discoursing on it

BT Song 1232
All the writing about the body, mind, soul, and spirit (atman) seems very artificial to me. When various words are used to define and explain them, ultimately, who am I? Who is even asking this question? Is it my atman, mind, buddhi, or ego? Which language will define these faculties clearly and correctly and provide a proper answer? Finally, I conclude that no one can give a clear answer in any language for this question. The best solution is to stop asking such questions and try to live in silence—transcending even words.
BT Song 1232 Should Keep Silence
Stanza 1:
My mind is telling
Something to me
My heart is
Listening to it carefully
The buddhi is then
Analyzing it
My atman is
Watching all this thamasa
Stanza 2:
Once all these words
Have defined me
Finally not knowing
Who am I?
Searching for an answer
For this
I wandered everywhere
Not finding a proper answer
Stanza 3:
As proper words are
Not available in Tamil
Definitely there will be
An answer in other languages
As I searched
For those words
In other languages
I was disappointed
Stanza 4:
Finally, I came
To one conclusion
Then I found
A proper answer for that
Why should I ask
Even this question
Then in vain
Search for the answer
Stanza 5:
I should stop
Asking questions
I should know first
Who is the one asking this question?
Definitely not the buddhi
This I should know for sure
Once it is known that
It is not mind or heart
Or even atman
Stanza 6:
Knowing that
As no one asked
Such a question and
However anyone tries
In whichever way
As they cannot give
Any kind of answer
I should live in silence

BT Song 1232: Should Keep Silence
English style
Stanza 1:
My mind doth whisper secrets unto me,
While heart doth hearken with a tender ear.
And intellect doth scrutinize each plea,
As soul, amused, doth all in silence cheer.
Stanza 2:
When words have shaped and forged my very core,
I find, at last, I know not who I be.
I search for answers, wander evermore,
Yet proper truths evade my questing plea.
Stanza 3:
No words in Tamil can such meaning bear,
Yet other tongues might hold the sought reply.
Through foreign speech, I searched with utmost care,
But disappointment met my every try.
Stanza 4:
At last, a single thought within me grew,
The answer clear, no more my mind doth ask.
Why pose the question? Why the query’s cue?
To search in vain becomes a fruitless task.
Stanza 5:
No longer shall I questions entertain,
I first must learn who asks this, seeking true.
‘Tis not the mind nor heart that speaks in vain,
Nor atman’s voice that queries what to do.
Stanza 6:
For none may answer such a silent call,
No effort yields the truth that lies in wait.
In quietude, I find my peace in all,
And thus in silence live, accept my fate.

BT Song 1233
Though I don’t get clear answers to some issues in life, I always trust that the Lord is there to guide and lead me. What does the future, particularly old age (I am already old), hold for me? I don’t know. But however it ends, it is the end only for the body and not for my atman, which will abide in Him always, as it does now.
BT Song 1233: You Are Enough
Simple English Version
Finally, I came
To tell you my situation
Where else can
This poor one go?
Once I came to you
As my last hope
Is there any way
For me to be troubled?
Though I
Don’t have a clear answer
You are there
To show the way
However the journey ends
That has already begun
I will definitely
Reach you in the end
This body of clay
Will pass away one day
It will surely
Mix with the elements
The life/soul alone
Will live on forever
It will attain
An eternal state
Only thinking
About it every day
And preparing myself
Only for that
I will pass
Each day
And I will sing your praises
With much gratitude

BT Song 1233: You Are Enough
Classical English Version
Finally I came
To reveal my plight
Where else can
This poor soul go?
Once I came to thee
As my final refuge
Is there any means
For me to be distressed?
Though I
Lack a clear answer
Thou art there
To show the path
However the pilgrim’s journey ends
That has already commenced
Surely I shall
Reach thee in the end
This body of clay
Shall pass away one day
Surely it will
Mingle with the elements
The life/soul alone
Shall live eternally
It shall attain
An imperishable state
Only contemplating
It daily
And preparing myself
Solely for that
I shall pass
Each day
And sing thy praises
With much thanksgiving

BT Song 1234
Several times in my life, all that I imagined or planned never materialized. Though God has arranged my life according to His plan, He still prepares me for it well before implementing it. Though I confess that I have surrendered my life to His will, the deceitful heart often deceives. But my only consolation is that, in spite of my deceitful heart, somehow in my spirit, I have surrendered my will to the will of God. And as He knows my thoughts well, though my heart deceives me, He always stands with me to forgive and restore me. I find solace when I take refuge at His feet.
BT Song 1234: Where Else to Go?
Simple English Version
You will accomplish
What is unpredictable
You will do it
As you planned it
You will prepare me
Well for that
You will arrange my life
Accordingly
When I depend
On you completely
Do I have any
Separate personal desire?
Whatever you do
Is acceptable to me
What’s the use of
Asking me about it?
These are not just
Mere words of formality
There is no place
For empty praise
Before my thoughts
Come to you
You know well in advance
There is no hiding from you
But there is no
Hope in me
The reason for that
Is not unknown to me
Though I come to you
As an innocent person
My deceitfulness
Has not completely gone
Though I make mistakes
You are there to rescue me
Oh my God
What else can I say to you?
The one who knows
My inner thoughts
I surrender completely to you
Where else can I go?
Mathigiri, 2-9-2020, 11:30 p.m.
BT Song 1234: Where Else to Go?
Classical English Version
Thou shalt accomplish
That which is unpredictable
Thou shalt do it
As thou hast planned
Thou shalt prepare me
Well for that
Thou shalt arrange my life
Accordingly
When I depend
Upon thee completely
Wherefore should I have
Any separate personal desire?
Whatsoever thou doest
Is acceptable to me
What is the use of
Asking me thereof?
These words come not
As mere formality
There is no place
For empty praise
Before my thoughts
Reach thee
Thou knowest well in advance
There is no hiding from thee
Yet there is no
Hope within me
The reason for that
Is not unknown to me
Though I come to thee
As an innocent one
My deceitfulness
Hath not fully gone
Though I err
Thou art there to rescue me
Oh my God
What else can I say to thee?
Thou who knowest
My innermost thoughts
I surrender completely to thee
Where else can I go?

BT Song 1235
For me, God provides every need in life, including the needs of our body. I cannot separate the needs of the body from the needs of the mind and atman. What God provides to the body complements the needs of my mind and atman, and vice versa. Tirumular rightly says, “As I took care of my body, I took care of my atman” (உடம்பை வளர்த்தேன் உயிர் வளர்த்தேனே). So, when God provides for them all, I thank Him, and when He refuses to give to either one, I accept His right to do so. But the secret of bhakti is to understand both and live in Him each day.
BT Song 1235: Your Right
Simple English Version
When you give
I will rejoice
If you refuse
I will accept it too
Giving or refusing
Is your right
Understanding this
Is my duty
The needs of the body
Are different
The needs of the heart
Are completely different
But my heart
Refuses to
Accept them
In different ways
All that is given
For the body’s needs
Will indeed
Help my heart
When the heart’s needs
Are fulfilled
The body will also
Rejoice in it
Creating body and heart
Joining together
As you provide
Their needs accordingly
As I live
Knowing you
I understand the
Meaning of this life
Therefore not
Despising the body
When I live
Taking care of it
As I join you
Who takes care of my heart
I will understand
The secret of life
Therefore knowing
All my needs
To take care
Of both of them
Understanding when
You give or refuse
I will live
Rejoicing in you

BT Song 1235: Your Right
Classical English Version
When thou givest

If thou refusest

Understanding this
Is my duty
The needs of the body
Are different
The needs of the heart
Are completely different
But my heart
Refuseth to
Accept them
In different ways
All that is given
For the body’s needs

BT Song 1231 எது மவுனம்
என்னதான் வாய்மூடி
நானுமே இருந்தாலும்
என்னுளே மவுனம்
வந்திட வில்லை 1
என்மனம் என்னுடன்
பேசிடும் போது
மவுனம் எதுவெனப்
புரியவும் இல்லை 2
அறிவைக் கொண்டு
மனதினை அடக்கு
என்று என்னிடம்
வென்றவர் சொன்னார் 3
அறிவெது மனமெது
என்பது புரியாமல்
அவரிடம் சென்று
அதனையும் கேட்டேன் 4
அவர்கூறும் விளக்கம்
ஏதுமே புரியாமல்
அமைதியாய் நானும்
வாய்மூடிக் கொண்டேன் 5
உடலெது மனமெது
அறிவெது உயிரெது
என்பது தெரியாமல்
குழம்பியே தவிக்க 6
உடலின்றி உயிரில்லை
உயிரின்றி உடலில்லை
உள்ளாக இயங்கிடும்
உணர்வுக்குப் பெயரில்லை 7
எத்தனை பெயரிட்டு
நாமுமே அழைத்தாலும்
அறிவென்று மனமென்று
கூறிட வழியில்லை 8
இத்தனை தெளிவாக
என்னையே புரிந்தபின்
இதற்குமேல் ஆராயத்
தேவை எனக்கில்லை 9
ஆகவே மவுனம்
எதுவாக இருந்தாலும்
அதைப்பற்றிச் சொல்வதால்
பயனேதும் இல்லை 10

BT Song 1232 மவுனம் காக்கணும்
என்மனம் என்னிடம்
எதையேனும் சொல்லுது
எனுள்ளம் அதையுமே
கவனமாய்க் கேட்குது
அறிவுமோ அதையுமே
ஆராய்ச்சி செய்யுது
இதையெல்லாம் ஆன்மா
வேடிக்கை பார்க்குது 1
இத்தனை வார்த்தைகள்
என்னையே வகுத்தபின்
இறுதியில் நான்
யாரெனத் தெரியாது
இதற்கொரு சரியான
விடைதேடி நானுமே
எங்கெங்கோ அலைந்தேன்
பதிலுமே கிடைக்காமல் 2
தமிழுக்குத் தெரியாத
விடையொன்று நிச்சயம்
பிறமொழியில் இருக்கும்
என்றுமே எண்ணியே
அவற்றில் இதற்கான
விடைதேடிப் பார்த்துமே
அங்கேயும் காணாமல்
ஏமாற்றம் அடைந்தேன் 3
இறுதியில் நானொரு
முடிவுக்கு வந்தேன்
அதன்பின் அதற்கான
பதிலையும் கண்டேன்
எதற்காக இந்தக்
கேள்வியைக் கேட்கணும்
அதன்பின் விடைதேடி
வீணாக அலையணும் 4
கேள்விகள் கேட்பதை
முதலிலே நிறுத்தணும்
கேட்பது யாரென
நிச்சயம் அறியணும்
அறிவல்ல உயிரல்ல
மனமல்ல உளமல்ல
என்பது நிச்சயம்
என்றுமே ஆனபின் 5
யாருமே கேட்காத
இந்தயென் கேள்விக்கு
எப்படி முயன்றாலும்
எங்குமே எவருமே
விடைதர இயலாது
என்பதை உணர்ந்து
வாய்மூடி நானும்
மவுனமாய் வாழணும் 6

BT Song 1233 நீபோதும்
இறுதியில் வந்தேன்
என்நிலை சொல்ல
ஏழைநான் இனிமேல்
வேறெங்கு செல்ல 1
கதியென உன்னிடம்
வந்த பினாலே
கலங்கியே நின்றிட
வழியுண்டோ இனிமேலே 2
தெளிவான விடையும்
தெரியாத போதும்
தெளிவாக வழிகாட்ட
நீயுளாய் போதும் 3
தொடங்கிய பயணம்
எவ்விதம் முடியினும்
உன்னிடம் வருவேன்
அதுமட்டும் நிச்சயம் 4
மண்ணுடல் ஒருநாள்
மடிந்துதான் போகும்
மண்ணோடு மண்ணாகக்
கலந்துதான் தீரும் 5
உள்ளான உயிர்மட்டும்
நிலைத்துமே வாழும்
ஒருக்காலும் அழிவற்ற
பேற்றினை அடையும் 6
அதைமட்டும் மனதில்
அனுதினம் எண்ணி
அதற்காக என்னை
ஆயத்தம் பண்ணி 7
நாள்தோறும் நாளை
நகர்ந்திடு வேனே
நன்றிபல கூறித்
துதித்திடு வேனே 8
மத்திகிரி, 1-09-2020, இரவு 11.00
BT Song 1234 வேறெங்கு செல்ல
நினைக்காத ஒன்றை
நீயுமே நடத்துவாய்
நினையாத படியே
நடத்தியே காட்டுவாய்
அதற்காக என்னையும்
ஆயத்தம் செய்குவாய்
அதன்படி வாழ்வையும்
அமைத்துமே கொடுப்பாய் 1
முழுமையாய் உன்னையே
சார்ந்திடும் போது
எனக்கெனத் தனியான
விருப்பமும் ஏது
எதைநீ செய்யினும்
சம்மதம் என்றபின்
என்னிடம் கேட்டுப்
பயனேது கூறு 2
உபச்சார வார்த்தையாய்
இதுவுமே வரவில்லை
வீணான புகழ்ச்சிக்கு
உன்னிடம் வழியில்லை
உள்ளத்தில் எண்ணமும்
வந்திடும் முன்னமே
உணர்ந்த உன்னிடம்
மறைத்திட இடமில்லை 3
ஆயினும் என்மீது
நம்பிக்கை எனக்கில்லை
அதற்கான காரணம்
புரியாமல் எனக்கில்லை
வெளந்தியாக நான்
உன்னிடம் வந்தாலும்
கள்ளத்தனம் மட்டும்
முற்றாக நீங்கலை 4
பிழைக்க நின்றாலும்
பேணியே காக்கின்ற
பெம்மான் உன்னிடம்
வேறென்ன சொல்ல
நெஞ்சின் நினைவினை
அறிந்த உன்னிடம்
தஞ்சம் அடைந்தேன்
வேறெங்கு நான்செல்ல 5

BT Song 1235 உனக்குள்ள உரிமை
தரும்போது ஏற்று
மனதார மகிழ்வேன்
தராது மறுத்தால்
அதனையும் ஏற்பேன்
தருவதும் மறுப்பதும்
உனக்குள்ள உரிமை
அதனைப் புரிவது
எனக்குள்ள கடமை 1
உடலின் தேவை
ஒருவிதம் இருக்கும்
மனதின் தேவை
மறுவிதம் இருக்கும்
ஆயினும் அவற்றைத்
தனித் தனியாகக்
கூறிட என்மனம்
ஏனோ மறுக்கும் 2
உடலின் தேவைக்கு
தந்திடும் யாவும்
உள்ளத்தின் தேவைக்கு
உறுதுணை செய்யும்
உள்ளத்தின் தேவை
நிறைவேறும் போது
உடலும் அதனை
உணர்ந்து மகிழும் 3
உடலையும் மனதையும்
இணைத்தே படைத்து
அவற்றின் தேவையை
அறிந்தே கொடுக்கும்
உன்னை அறிந்து
வாழ்ந்திடும் எனக்கு
வாழ்வின் அர்த்தம்
நன்குமே புரியும் 4
ஆகவே உடலை
அசட்டை செய்யாது
அதனைப் பேணி
வாழும் போது
உள்ளத்தைப் பேணும்
உன்னுடன் இணைய
உலக வாழ்வின்
இரகசியம் புரியும் 5
ஆகவே எனது
தேவையை அறிந்து
அகம் புறம்
இரண்டையும் நன்கு
பேணிட வென்று
தருவதை மறுப்பதை
புரிந்து கொண்டு
அனுதினம் வாழ்வேன்
உன்னில் மகிழ்ந்து 6
