This is also set in Tamil pan isai (music). I started to write this in September 1985 and completed it on 5-4-1986 at Lucknow.
12 I am a fool
I come unto your feet
As a rascal and fool
Ruling over me
By removing sins
Giving your Spirit as the evidence
And protecting me by your love
To live every day
To adore you
You protect me
I took refuge at your graceful feet
Both mind and words become
Corrupted one
There is no purity in thinking and
This is the truth
It is shameful to tell that
There is no firmness in my words/commitment
Sin has increased in
All my talk
To whom shall I appeal
Look unto me condition
I got wavering mind
I saw only a rebellious heart
There is no zeal in my spirit
There is no hunger after spirituality
I have a hasty mind
With so many thoughts
I rushed eagerly
To drink sin as milk
Who will know my wretchedness
Look unto me
What kind of life is this
Why even this birth itself?
There is no god which I didn’t call
There is no temple in which I didn’t worshipped
There is no guru to whom I didn’t surrendered
There is no scripture which I didn’t know/searched
There is no sect to which I didn’t appeal
There is no teertha (holy water) which is left without taking bath
Change this condition
O God my refuge
The life which I have in my mind
Is not practised by me
I don’t want to do the things
Which I do
I don’t rush to do the good things
Which I want to do
I don’t have the strength to
Remove the evils which I hate
My sinful nature is the reason
For this condition of mine
But what you have seen in me
To take pity on me
And giving up your divine nature
Taking avatara on this world
To give up your life
By taking pity on us
I don’t see any goodness in my life
The least one on earth
Won’t you listen the
Wretchedness of my life?
Where else I can go
Which path I will find
To get back my life
Which I have lost because of my foolishness?
How I will redeem (it)
I cannot find any way
By taking pity on me
Unless you give your grace by redeeming me
I don’t find any other option
For me to be saved
Not allowing me to die
In the quicksand of sin
By showing your mercy on this wretched sinner
You came taking pity on me
But not knowing
your grace
by drowning in the darkness of foolishness
I lost my life
Therefore take pity on
This poor fool
In this song both ‘sins in work’ and ‘sin in principle’ go hand in hand. In Hinduism too one can find the same kind of expression of both. However when it comes to theology, ‘sin in principle’ is either rejected or philosophically explained. I think that this too is the work of the philosophers and commentators who tried to dig out their own particular point of view in the complex scriptures which talk several views simultaneously. One reason could be that bhakti poems express the feelings, emotions and experiences spontaneously by pouring out the heart. That time a bhakta rarely takes note of the theological aspects seriously. Whereas those scriptures written to propagate particular principle/ideal/doctrine, care is taken to present a systematic thought. Of course still one can find contradictions and conflicting views placed side by side as we found both in Gita and Upanishads. One major reason is that interpolations distorted the original thought. Later compilers (Scribes) could have edited in such a way that it ended up distorting the original thought or adding more contradiction. But all these understanding about the difference between bhakti literatures from theological ones are more academic in nature and no Hindu pays much attention to it. (see my notes for song 11 from Hopkins)
Whereas when it comes to our bhakti in Muktinath, however esoteric could be bhakti and its various expressions (poems, arts) yet the role of theology cannot be ignored—however poor the poet or artist could be in theology. So I too, however I poured out my heart through my poems, unconsciously I was aware of the importance of theology. Several times this created some tension in my mind between the free expression of my thoughts and feelings on one side and the demand of theology on the other side. However I had one advantage. As I never shared my poems with others, I was a bit free in my expression. So the role of theology in my poems is guided by my ‘reflections’ however it contradicts with conventional theology among the Christians. So not minding others’ recognition, I continued to write poems for my personal sadhana. But reading scholarly books helps me to keep an eye on my theology.
Finally, one can find similar contradictions in Muktiveda also, however one tries to iron them out. Contradiction is going to be part of every Scripture and commentaries could try their best to resolve them. And a true follower of every faith needs to live with this contradiction. But a bhakta, though aware of the contradictions, can brush them under the bhakti carpet temporarily to worship the Lord.
