Boat song

This one I wrote in the flock tune known as ‘Thonippattu’ (boat) on 20-12-1986 when I was at Marandahalli in Tamilnadu. When the fisherman or the boat man sails on the boat, they sing songs with this tune.  One can feel the swing of the boat in the waves when singing using this tune.

அலைமோதும் கடல்மீது

அலைக்கழிந்திடும் சிறு துரும்பேபோல்

அவனியிலே இவ்வாழ்வினிலே

அமைதியும் பெற்றிட வழியேது–ஓஹையா ஓஹையா …

கடந்து வந்த வாழ்வினிலே

கணநேரம்  அமைதியில்லை

காற்றடிக்கும் திசைபறக்கும்

தூசிபோன்ற இவ்வாழ்வினிலே–ஓஹையா ஓஹையா …

நம்பி வந்த மனிதர் எங்கே?

நயமுடன் பேசிய வார்த்தை எங்கே?

நாசியிலே சுவாசமுள்ள

நரரை நம்பினால் கதியிதுவே–ஓஹையா ஓஹையா …

தேடிவைத்த செல்வமெங்கே?

திறமை கல்வி புகழ் எங்கே?

ஓடிச் செல்லும் உலகவாழ்வில்

ஒன்றேனும் நிலை நின்றதில்லை–ஓஹையா ஓஹையா …

ஆதிஅந்தம் ஆனவனை

ஆதிமுதல் முதல் நிலை நின்றவனை

மாறிடாத மாண்புடைய

மன்னன் முக்தேசனை அண்டிடுவாய்–ஓஹையா ஓஹையா …

நிலை நிற்கும் வாழ்வளிப்பான்

நித்தமும் உன்னுடன் வழிநடப்பான்

சத்தியத்தை நீ பற்றிக்கொண்டால்

நிச்சயம் உனக்கு ஜெயமளிப்பான்–ஓஹையா ஓஹையா …

Which is the way to get peace

In this life on this earth?

Which is tossed like a dust

One the wavering sea

The life which is like a dust

Carried by the wind

There was no peace even for a moment

In the life which is gone

Where are the people whom we trusted

Where are the words which they spoke very sweetly

This is the destiny if we trust

The human who has breathe on his nostril

Where is the wealth which you have collected?

Where has your talent, education and fame?

Nothing remains permanently in this life

Which runs very fast

Take refuge at Lord Muktesan

Whose Character never changes

Who is the beginning and the end

Who remains eternally from the beginning

He will give a permanent life

He will walk with you everyday

If you hold this truth

He will give victory definitely

One common theme in such boat songs is about the non-permanence of life.  As the boat is tossed by the wave, the theme of the boat songs too will reflect this non-permanence of life.  Such is the character of the Tamil poems which not only the tune but carries the theme according to the nature of that song.
