BT Song 21.
BT Song 21. Need Grace
I need grace and more grace
Lord I need your grace
To protect and to lead me by encouraging!
Every day I need it more
Nothing good is in me to live
believing on my own strength
I don’t know what is the way out of it
I need your grace to accept and to lead me
The path which I tread is a life
full of bitterness
There was no peace even for a moment
And I need grace to protect and lead me
The life on this earth is very hard
And I don’t have strength to carry it forward
As the wind is blowing and rain is pouring
I need your grace to cross it
BT Song 22.
BT Song 22. Show your compassion
Look unto me O Lord this poor one
Who comes to your presence with much pain!
I don’t know what else I can do?
And there is no other refuge than Muktesan
Others refuse to understand me
And I don’t have refuge anymore among them
Enough Lord I don’t want any more trouble
O Holy one who is the end of my comfort
To whom shall I share by trusting anymore?
All my heart’s burden?
I didn’t see any friend or dear one
Who can understand me like you?
I won’t accuse them any more
After all they too are mere human like me with lots of problems
Yet you give me your compassion to this slave
Again one more time only through them (human)
This is written on 27-07-1988 at Madhubani when I face some crucial problem in my life and seva. I felt completely deserted by others and that time I poured out my heart to the Lord
The paradox and challenge in life is to understand the pain and blessing in human relationships. God cannot show His grace except human agency. At the same time He has to work only through our limitations. I often faced this crisis in my life. Being a single man I cannot openly share all my struggles in life on various issues. When I tried to share, then it became gossip or a point to mock me. Similarly when other bachelors sought my counsel in some of their struggles generally I avoided giving advice, particularly in their struggle in lust. My general counsel to them was like this: I know your struggle in this area. But if you have decided to marry, better seek advice from a family man. If you have decided to remain SINGLE then don’t seek advice from anyone.
This song was written when I was misunderstood for giving this advice to some bachelors who were serving with me. Then a new kind of gossip began to spread about me. Though I didn’t take it seriously, yet I learnt one good lesson through that incident and generally avoided giving any kind of advice to anyone, even if they sought it. Now too, counselling is the one thing which I don’t like. My one eternal creed is: however matured and have good experience in life, yet a sannyasi is not a good person to give advice. That is why when anyone approaches any problem in life my regular response is: if you cannot get a solution to your problem in life from your parents and elders you cannot get it from a sannyasi. He is not a good model for you to imitate in life.
Added to this my spirit of ‘recluse’ also forces me to keep away from people who are too much in their life struggle. At the same time I value the importance of human relationships. This may look contradictory to others, but for me this is the paradox of life—at least for a person like me. And I found a way through my poems to come out from that paradox in my life. Next to my poems, my personal diary also helps me a lot.

BT Song 23
குறிப்பாக ஸ்லோகம் 1.2.9-க்கு வ்யாக்யானத்தில் ‘Only an enlightened soul alone can enlighten other’ என்ற வரிகள் என் மனதை ஆழமாகத் தொட்டது.
23. A burning lamp
Only a burning lamp can light another one
Is true in life
I don’t find any use with my learning
Unless my heart with the power of the Spirit
Becomes a burning lamp by receiving the light (from you)
Having eyes I became blind, became duff even having ears
Became a fool, even though I have intellect, and became a poor man in my heart
Without you in my heart I became empty
I became a poor man in life without any resource
Became a burden to the earth and wasting my life all the time
Save my Lord Muktesa before I attain that eternal darkness
Before I go to my grave by wasting it on earth
Show mercy to this poor man in this life on earth
To become a burning lamp through your eternal Words
Give your words as the un-quenching lamp to this slave
Who sought your feet!
I stayed at Sat-tal ashram to do my personal studies in Hinduism. When I was reading Katho Upanishad on 11-04-1990, I was reading the verse 1.2.9 and the commentary on it. The lines in the commentary, ‘Only an enlightened soul alone can enlighten others’, touched my heart deeply. Immediately I wrote this song based on Psalms 119:105:
My reading of Hindu scripture and personal study on Hinduism helped me to think beyond Mukti Veda about the common grace of God which He bestows in every culture and tradition. I never tried to limit God’s revelation within the boundary of Mukti Veda. My bhakti in the Lord never forced me to throw away my heritage. At the same time I never want to despise it by saying that it served for a time being to lead me to the Lord [preparatio evangelica]. Once it served its purpose now I have to throw it away. If I do that the loss will be mine as no one could master all the cultural, spiritual wealth in one’s own worldview in which she takes birth easily. I don’t treat them as part of God’s gift in my life. They are mine by my birth right. They are my inheritance and not just a gift from God. And this is my personal belief that God never expects me to abandon which belongs to me. If I cannot abandon my mother, how can I abandon my heritage? My mother gave me physical birth and the Lord gave me spiritual birth. Then it means now I have to throw away my mother from my life—even if she is not ready to follow the Lord? If I cannot do that, then how would God expect me to abandon my cultural/religious/social heritage? Here I think the evangelicals, because of their misguided zeal for evangelism failed to understand the mind of God. But from the beginning I never succumbed to their over zeal to misguide me in this area.
BT Song 24.
BT Song 24. A refuge to the bhaktas
You are the Mother, you are the Father
You are my Master, You are my Refuge
You are my dear Friend
You are my compassionate Brother
You are the centre of my love
You are the Lord to my soul
Who stole my heart with affection!
I sing unto you in melodious music
With a melting heart and
Emotional spirit with bhakti
The eternal Being
God of God and True Jyothi (light)
The blissful Light
Refuge to the bhaktas
Where can I find language?
To praise you
How can I tell you?
The longing of this poor man’s spirit
How can utter them to you
Don’t you know my heart?
The Eternal one
God my Master
By cleansing my inner being
With blissful tears and forgetting myself
Like a girl who is
Struck with love
Seeking the face of the beloved
And every day approaching you
I offered myself unto you
Protect me; I took refuge at your golden feet
My heart melts in you
And the hairs stood up at the end
Tears flowing from eyes
Bowing at your feet with folded hands
I come unto you as my refuge
O Mother I am your child
I cannot find on this earth
Any other refuge other than your feet
At Sat-tal ashram when I was studying, thinking, writing and discussing about bhakti, on 25-11-1990 I wrote this song. This is one of my favourite songs.
Outward gestures like folding the hands, falling at the feet of the Lord, emotional bodily response like tears falling from eyes, hairs standing up etc. need not be the mark of true bhakti. One can show outward gestures without really having inner reverence. Similarly mere emotion can also result in bodily responses. But they too have some role in bhakti. Singing, dancing, clapping, smiling and weeping are exclusively human responses to emotions. Some may go overboard and some may underplay. But none can live without some outward expression for emotion.
Bottom of FormBT Song 25.
BT Song 25. Godless knowledge
Repeatedly pounding the husk
Won’t give a single grain
However you learn,
Without the knowledge of God
Learning too will become
A husk without a grain
Remember this in your heart
When I was reading Tukaram’s poems at Sat-tal ashram on 05-12-1990, inspired by its meaning I wrote the next two songs
For me one can have knowledge without bhakti, but one cannot have bhakti without knowledge. Mere learning without bhakti is like pounding the husk. Similarly without proper knowledge bhakti will remain mere sentiment leading to having several blind faiths. Knowledge helps to remove ignorance. Without removing the outside cover one cannot eat raw paddy. If the outer cover is ignorance, knowledge helps to remove it. But mere learning just seeking information without bhakti will never lead to true knowledge.
