BT Song 1091
For the past few weeks, I have not been interested in writing anything, particularly poems. When inspiration comes, I deliberately try to avoid it. However, I feel that I have missed something in my relationship with the Lord. So, tonight, when I was meditating, I asked the Lord what is the one thing I have lost with Him. Then, the argument began between us. As usual, as an argumentative Indian, I won by kicking the ball into His court, and He is also happy about it.
BT Song 1091 Who Bears the Responsibility
What I have lost remains a mystery to me,
Why I stand perturbed is beyond my ken.
In quest of answers, I sought thee,
Yet, in silence, I stood, awaiting thy voice.
Thou didst declare that no bond binds us so,
Thou saidst my rights remain intact within.
Thou saidst my daily reverence was unfailing,
Yet, thou didst proclaim, I have lost something.
“What words did I utter to call thee unto me?
In what dire straits did I rescue thee?
Though thou didst falter many a time,
Why did I, with resolve, unite thee again?”
“To sing my praises, no messengers there be,
To do my bidding, no mortals there be,
To extol my glory, no tongues there be,
To fulfill my will, no servants there be.”
“What matter how many songs thou dost pen,
What worth is life lived solely for my sake?
Having lost the love borne at creation’s dawn,
What value hath anything done for mere pride?”
“To this query, I have no reply,
For this is no novel quandary to me.
I possess not the love that resides in thee,
Nor am I the cause for this malady.”
“Who bestowed this mind so fickle and frail?
Who placed trials in our path each day?
Who vowed that naught could sever us apart?”
“After thou gavest answer to this plight,
Pray, tell me how this loss befell.
When it is no longer I, but thou who remain,
Who then bears the responsibility for the loss?”

BT Song 1091 Who is Responsible
I don’t know what it is, but I lost something
I don’t know why, but I stood confused
To know that, I came to you
For you to say it, I kept silent
You said it’s not in the relationship with you
You said I didn’t lose the right within me
You said I never forgot to bow daily
Yet you said I lost something
“What did I say and call you?
In what state did I save you?
Even when you failed many times in between
Why did I join you again?”
“To praise me, there are no messengers
To do my work, there are no humans
To sing my glory, there are no tongues
To do my will, there are no servants”
“How many songs can you write, what does it matter?
What is the use of living for me?
After losing the love that existed in the beginning
What is the use of doing anything for pride?”
“I don’t have an answer for this
Because this is not new to me
I don’t have love like you
I’m not the reason for this”
“Who gave the unstable mind?
Who put trials every day?
Who promised me that
nothing would separate us?”
“After giving the answer for this
Tell me how I lost
When it’s no longer me but you
If lost, who is responsible for that?”

BT Song 1092
What cannot be communicated through letters, a bhakta can communicate through her bhakti. As God gave me the opportunity to be His bhakta, I thanked Him and wrote this song.
BT Song 1092 The Simple Path
Only I discern
The life I have lived
Only thou didst comprehend
And perceive my needs
What even I could not grasp,
My own mind unknown,
Thou didst redeem me,
Thou didst understand me
Oft, when I
Ponder upon it,
Even my wisdom
Stands astonished
Yet my heart
Doth clearly comprehend
That a miracle
Hath transpired
Ever did I inquire
Why thou didst this,
And thou gavest
A fitting response
I embraced it
And offered thanks,
With heartfelt devotion
I extolled thee
This bond we share,
‘Twixt us two,
None other
Can fathom
No matter how
I write and demonstrate,
Nothing can
Elucidate it
Thereafter, thou
Didst reveal a path,
And commanded me
To follow it
What could not be
Expressed in words,
Thou gavest a way
To understand with ease
I embraced it
And acted upon it,
I devoted
My life thereto
Living as a devotee,
Attaining blessings,
Every day I
Offered thee thanks

BT Song 1092 The Simple Way
Only I know
The life I lived
Only you understood
And felt my needs
Even when I didn’t understand
My own mind
You saved me
You understood me
Often, when
I think of it
Even my knowledge
Is amazed
Yet my heart
Clearly understands
That a miracle
Has happened
I always asked
Why you did this
And you gave
A fitting answer
I accepted it
And thanked you
From the depths of my heart
I praised you
This bond we share
Between us
No one else
Can understand
No matter how
I write and show
Nothing can
Explain it
After that, you
Showed me a way
And instructed me
To follow it
What couldn’t be
Explained in words
You gave a way
To understand easily
I accepted it
And followed it
I dedicated
My life to it
Living as a devotee
Gaining blessings
Every day I
Thanked you

BT Song 1093
பாவியை மீட்பதே குணமானபின்னே, ஏன் மீட்டாய் என்றே இறைவனைக் கேட்க வேண்டாம்
As saving the sinner becomes the nature of God, I need not ask the question: why He redeemed me, the worst sinner on earth. This is what Thirumular says in Tirumandiram: God stood next to the one who makes errors.
இறைவன் பிழைக்க நின்றார் பக்கம் பேணி நின்றானே
BT Song 1093 No Answer Needed
In the gutter lay the hound,
Why, oh why, didst thou show mercy
Only to it? Pray,
Do tell me why.
When the virtuous and wise
Lived in their splendor,
Why didst thou seek
The wicked one? Pray, tell.
Against nature’s decree,
Why hast thou acted so?
In my salvation,
What purpose didst thou find?
If it be true
That God resides
Only in the hearts of the pure,
Then
Why didst thou come
To seek the heart
Of the vile, and
Bear needless blame?
When I fled,
Seeking the way,
Wandering and lost,
Why didst thou call
With arms outstretched,
To welcome me
And bid me come?
Pray, tell me why.
Cleansing the filth,
Banish the stench,
In the heart of the home,
Why didst thou place me?
Licking the remnants
On the leaf,
Why didst thou
Set before me a feast?
All this while,
Living as thy devotee,
This one thing
I could not comprehend.
Since this is thy nature,
No further answers
Are needed,
Nor sought.

BT Song 1093 No Need for an Answer
Lying in the gutter
Why did you show mercy
Only to the dog?
Just tell me that
When good and wise people
Were living around
Why did you seek
The evil one? Tell me
Against nature
Why did you do this?
In saving me
What use did you see?
If it’s true that
God dwells only
In the hearts of the pure
Then
Why did you come
Seeking the heart of
The evil one, and
Take false blame?
Leaving me
When I was running
Searching for the way
Wandering
Why did you
Call me over
With open arms
And welcome me?
Washing the filth
Removing the stench
In the middle of the house
Why did you place me?
Licking the leftovers
On the leaf
Why did you
Serve me a feast?
All this time
Living as a devotee
This one thing
I couldn’t understand
Since this is
Your nature
No further answers
Are needed

BT Song 1094
When I complete any work that stretches for many months or days, I feel a kind of inner satisfaction. I never like any work to remain unfinished. Naturally, I never commit to any work that I know I cannot accomplish. So, tonight, when I completed some work that stretched for several months, I thanked God for helping me to complete it. I strongly believe in bhakti through Karma yoga. That is why I always rejoice when God gives me the strength to accomplish any work of my desire or anything that He gives. For me, the nobleness of Mukti should be realized in this life when we serve God and others.
BT Song 1094 Thou Hast Granted Fulfillment
When in all things thy grace doth dwell,
Wherefore should worry find place within me?
When thou art ever with me,
What is loneliness to me here?
To savor each atom,
Thou hast fashioned a life most fair.
For this, with boundless grace each day,
O Lord, thou hast bestowed abundance upon me.
To accomplish each desired task,
Thou hast guided with precision.
Along with that, for all endeavors,
Thou hast granted strength to organize them well.
No matter the task at hand,
Thou hast ensured fulfillment therein.
When I came forth to lead,
Thou hast effortlessly transformed and completed it.
Amidst my duties, to devote myself to thee,
Thou hast fixed my mind firmly upon thee.
With a joyous heart to praise thee,
Daily thou hast showered thy grace.
With devotion, I bow at thy feet,
Completing my tasks, I find fulfillment.
Liberation, with its supreme greatness,
I shall perceive in my daily life.

BT Song 1094 You Gave Fulfillment
When your grace is present in everything,
Where is the place for worry within me?
When you are always with me,
What is loneliness to me here?
To savor every moment,
You created a beautiful life for me.
For that, your boundless grace daily,
Oh Lord, you have given me plenty.
To accomplish whatever I wish,
You guided it smoothly.
Along with that, for all tasks,
You gave the strength to organize them well.
No matter what the task,
You made sure to find fulfillment in it.
When I came forward to lead,
You easily transformed and completed it.
Amidst my tasks, to also devote myself to devotion,
You placed my mind firmly in you.
With a joyful heart praising you,
You showered your grace daily.
With devotion, I bow at your feet,
Completing my tasks, I find fulfillment.
Liberation, its supreme greatness,
I shall see in my everyday life.

BT Song 1095
I wrote this song after reading the following account, as no philosophy will help in crises in life other than the grace of God:
…Nanda says, ‘Since divinity pervaded everyone and everything, when he [Gandhi] prayed, he was not begging or demanding something from God, but for himself, “my Higher Self, real Self, with which I have not yet achieved complete identification”’ (Nanda, B. R. Gandhi and Religion. New Delhi: Oxford University Press, 1990: 9). One does not have to be an Upanishadic scholar to be able to say that here Gandhi was (p. 359) only echoing the hoary maxim, ‘tat tvam asi’ (that art thou). While Gandhi believed in the immanence of God in every human being, there were also occasions when he prayed to, what appears an external entity, for a gift or benefit. For instance, when his son Manilal was seriously ill for typhoid in 1901, Gandhi rejected the Parsi doctor’s advice to give the patient chicken broth and eggs, and instead gave him diluted orange juice, and ‘several three-minute hot tub baths a day’. When the boy’s temperature refused to come down with these administrations, Gandhi walked the streets and prayed calling, ‘God, God, God, God, please God’. Gandhi attributed Manilal’s recovery to God’s grace and said that ‘God had saved his [Gandh’s] honour’ (Fischer, Louis , The Life of Mahatma Gandhi. Bombay: Oxford University Press, 1990: 79-81). This incident shows his similarity with the behaviour of other devout people, and is quite different from praying to the brahman that is inside very atman. (Italics original)—M. N. Srinivasan, ‘Gandhi’s Religion’, pp. 355-361, in M. N. Srinivas, Collected Essays, New Delhi, Oxford University Press, (2002) Paperbacks 2004, pp. 359-60
BT Song 1095 Unyielding Philosophy
How much wisdom
One may speak,
When faced with truth,
What use is solitude? 1
Those who claim
To measure truth,
Disturb even the wise,
Misleading them. 2
Between knowledge
And the heart,
This battle
Never ends. 3
No matter how much
One strives,
Victory in both
Remains elusive. 4
What does the soul need,
To conquer?
Who can defeat
Themselves? 5
When one comprehends
And reconciles,
Who can stand
Against them? 6
In what manner
Can one strive
To grasp
The divine? 7
Enthralled,
He bestows mercy today,
To understand Him,
What path will suffice? 8
With knowledge,
Give your heart
To Him,
Understand the soul’s need. 9
Cleansing rites,
Shedding illusions,
Finding refuge,
You must know. 10
Beyond this,
In that state of communion,
Live each day,
Aspire you must. 11

BT Song 1091
