BT Songs 1101 to 1105

BT Song 1101

As people are suffering in most parts of India, and the rainy season has started in Kerala, we have a better climate with heavy winds blowing throughout the day and much moisture. Naturally, this is the season for viraha bhakti. As I was enjoying the cool climate, I thought of writing another song in the viraha-bhakti genre and wrote this song.

BT Song 1101  Good for Both

Verse 1

You know my state

Yet you mock me so

Pointlessly you get angry

At me, I know

You come to me

Then push me away

But you refuse

To tell me why, to say

Verse 2

Was it the anger

From our fight that day?

Or the disappointment

That I didn’t come your way?

Is it because you thought

You belonged to me?

Or the turmoil

Because I act knowingly?

Verse 3

Caught in the web

Of devotion, you see

Tried to understand you

With my mind, but couldn’t be

Confusing my heart

Did you disappear suddenly?

With life disturbed

Did you go far from me?

Verse 4

After flesh and soul

Became one, you know

And thoughts stood fulfilled

As we let them flow

Knowing with intellect

Is necessary, they say

Thus exploring

Will I lose you someday?

Verse 5

Do you think of

The love we had at start?

If there’s a change in it

Will you tell me from your heart?

Both of us

Haven’t been apart till now

What is this drama?

Will you explain it, somehow?

Verse 6

Summer has gone

Withering has come

The body too

Withered and glum

As the bangles fell

Shoulders weakened, too

Thinking of love

Eyes welled up, feeling blue

Verse 7

The width, depth

And length of love

Cannot be understood

By mind, my love

I don’t need

A reason, it’s true

Understanding this

Is good for me and you

Verse 8

So don’t

Pointlessly get mad

Don’t give reasons

That are just so sad

Don’t let the body

Wither in the gloom

Join me quickly

Don’t delay, come soon

BT Song 1101 Good for Both

Knowing my state

You mock me

Pointlessly getting angry

At me

You come to me

And push me away

But you refuse

To tell the reason

Is it the anger

That I quarreled that day?

Or the disappointment

That I didn’t come when called?

Is it the thought

That you belong to me?

Or the turmoil

Because I act knowingly?

Caught in the web

Of devotion

I tried to understand you

With my intellect

Confusing my mind

Withering has come

The body too

Has withered with paleness

As the bangles fell

Shoulders have weakened

Thinking of love

Eyes have welled up

The width, depth

And length of love

Cannot be understood

By intellect, dear

I don’t need

A reason for that

Understanding this

Is good for both of us

So don’t

Pointlessly get angry at me

Don’t give reasons

That are unnecessary

Don’t let the body

Wither in sadness

Join quickly

Don’t delay

BT Song 1102

Relationships demand communication. Unless we are able to communicate not just with words, but also through life, several frictions will arise in any relationship. At the same time, we cannot explain every misunderstanding about ourselves to others. We should try to explain, but if others are unable to understand, we should simply ignore it and continue living, as the Lord understands us clearly. Fortunately, he never demands or expects any kind of explanation in our relationship with him. A friend is someone to whom you need not explain yourself. With the Lord as such a friend, I can live with peace of mind and complete my life on this earth.

BT Song 1102 Thinking of Your Grace

Verse 1

Never parting, living

Always by your side

Always thinking of your grace

That never does subside

Living within you

Finding peace so wide

I’ll reach your feet

With devotion as my guide

Verse 2

When trials come my way

No matter what they bring

When baseless accusations

Start to cling

You bring comfort

To my troubled heart

I found peace

As tears depart

Verse 3

Living surrounded

By those who don’t see

Life on this earth

Becomes a heavy plea

Even when I don’t

Understand your plan

You bring peace

And that’s enough for me

Verse 4

When questions without answers

Stand before me tall

I don’t need

Any answers at all

Coming to you

Who understands my heart

No explanations needed

Just your presence, my part

Verse 5

When living with you

Things become so clear

No useless confusion

Ever comes near

Giving explanations

To those who don’t understand

Wastes time and energy

Better spent, better planned

Verse 6

Living with you

Who knows my mind so well

Thinking of your call

In my heart, it does dwell

Without separation

Finding joy each day

I’ll end my life on earth

Thinking of your grace, always

BT Song 1102  Thinking of Your Grace

Verse 1

Never parting,

Living with you,

Always thinking of your grace

That never diminishes,

Living within you,

Finding fulfillment,

I’ll reach your feet,

Soaked in devotion.

Verse 2

When trials come,

No matter what they are,

When baseless blame

Comes to me,

You bring comfort

To my heart,

I found peace,

As tears flowed.

Verse 3

Living surrounded

By those who don’t understand,

Life on this earth

Becomes a heavy burden,

Even when I don’t understand

The purpose you set,

Your peace

Is enough for me.

Verse 4

When unanswered questions

Stand before me,

I don’t need

Any answers,

Coming to you

Who understands me,

No explanations needed,

Just your presence.

Verse 5

When living with you,

There are no

useless confusions,

For those who

don’t understand,

Giving explanations,

Wastes time,

And is useless.

Verse 6

Living with you,

Who knows my heart,

Thinking of your call

Given to me,

Without separation,

Joyful every day,

I’ll end my earthly life

Thinking of your great grace.

BT Song 1103

When I fail to understand myself—my mind, my intellect—it is better to keep quiet and refrain from giving advice on any matter. Despite my various sadhanas—reading the Word of God, maintaining silence, trying to understand the grace of God, and so on—all have failed to help me understand myself. But one thing I know for sure about myself or my mind—it is restless, unstable, quick to speak and decide. Therefore, with an unstable mind, it is better to keep quiet and not disturb others. While contemplating this, I realized that once I take refuge at the feet of the Lord, there is no longer a need to understand myself or my mind. With great joy, I gave up any attempt to understand myself or my mind.

Mathirigi, 23-06-2019

BT Song 1103

Verse 1

When my heart

Could not understand itself

It was best to stay

Silent, saying nothing

Verse 2

When you, who knows me

Remained silent

How could my heart

Find any clarity?

Verse 3

I sat in quiet contemplation

And delved deep within

Alongside that,

I read your words

Verse 4

I pondered

The advice of others

But my mind

Remained clouded

Verse 5

You gave me the gift

Of silence

And urged me to explore

My thoughts within

Verse 6

Yet, in silence’s embrace

I struggled

To grasp my true essence

Or understand myself

Verse 7

No matter my efforts

I could never fully

Decipher my own mind

Verse 8

It dawned on me

Without your grace

Within me

Understanding was futile

Verse 9

Even the grace

You bestowed upon me

Eluded my mind’s grasp

Verse 10

Then I realized

In simplicity

I found solace

Coming to you

Verse 11

What need does my mind have

To comprehend?

Even if it knew all,

What would it achieve?

Verse 12

I turned to you

My refuge

And in that moment,

My mind let go

Verse 13

With you, I found

Peace and understanding

Letting go of all else

I abandoned my mind

Mathirigi, 23-06-2019

BT Song 1103 I Abandoned My Mind

Verse 1

When my heart

Didn’t understand itself

It’s better to stay

Silent, saying nothing.

Verse 2

When you, who knows me

Did not speak

How can my heart

Know anything?

Verse 3

I sat quietly

And looked deeply

Along with that,

I read your book.

Verse 4

I thought about

The advice of others

But my mind

Remained unclear.

Verse 5

You gave me the mantra

Of silence

And told me to understand

My mind and thoughts.

Verse 6

Even though silence

Became my language

I failed within it

To understand myself.

Verse 7

No matter what efforts

I made

I could never

Know my mind.

Verse 8

Without your grace

Residing within

There’s no way

To understand, I realized.

Verse 9

Even the grace

You gave me

My mind couldn’t

Comprehend.

Verse 10

After that, I realized

Something simple

As a refuge

I came to you today.

Verse 11

What need is there

For my mind to know?

Even if it knew

What use would it be?

Verse 12

I came to you

Who gave me refuge

After that, my mind

Abandoned everything.

BT Song 1104

Reflecting on the past, present, and future, it’s amazing that I’ve managed to live this far despite my nature! But for the grace of God, I would have easily perished and never lived the life I have so far. Yet, I haven’t lived a life that could be called a real life. So life remains a riddle for me! As usual, I sought the answer from the Lord, which, as usual, he tries to evade. Therefore, until he provides the answer, I must live with this riddle, unable to solve it.

BT Song 1104Did I Truly Live?

I ask without knowing,

Understand what I say,

You accepted my question,

And answered my way,

Unravel life’s puzzles,

This life so unclear,

Grant me the wisdom,

To live without fear.

Thought it was easy,

Proudly I stood,

Wondered if it’s heavy,

Never understood,

Looked at those before me,

Tried to live like them,

Thought I could follow,

Be just like them.

Then I discovered,

The error I made,

Living like others,

Isn’t a trade,

Though life seems alike,

On this earthly plane,

Everyone’s journey,

Is uniquely their own.

Reflecting on life,

From then until now,

Feels like a mountain,

To climb somehow,

Did I truly live?

This question arises,

Deep within me,

In quiet surprises.

Knowing all this,

I see my state,

The life I lived,

Without a true fate,

Realizing it’s late,

To wake up and see,

I come to you,

To set my heart free.

No matter how I lived,

Reflecting brings no gain,

Lamenting the past,

Only brings pain,

But your grace was there,

I know it’s true,

That’s why I lived,

And that I knew.

Even with knowing,

I come to ask you,

Something unclear,

Oh Lord, it’s true,

If you understand,

But refuse to share,

How will I solve,

This puzzle I bear?

This isn’t new,

To me at all,

You haven’t done this,

Haven’t heard my call,

After creating,

Your role I knew,

Without realizing,

I didn’t ask you.

Leaving the creator’s,

Title aside,

To save the sinner,

With me you abide,

Living like me,

Understanding my plea,

Give me the answers,

To set my heart free.

BT 1104 – Did I Truly Live

1.

I ask without understanding,

Understand what I mean,

You accepted and gave,

The answer I need,

Unravel the puzzle of life,

Untangle the mystery,

So I can live with understanding,

Bless me with this grace.

2.

I thought it was easy,

I felt proud,

I thought it was a burden,

When I thought about it,

I looked at those who lived before me,

I thought I could live like them,

I thought I could follow,

In their footsteps.

3.

Then I realized,

The mistake I made,

Living like others,

Is not easy,

Life on earth,

Is similar yet different,

Each person’s life,

Is unique and distinct.

4.

When I think about,

The life I’ve lived so far,

It feels overwhelming,

A question arises,

Did I truly live,

Like I should have,

This question keeps,

Arising within me.

5.

After realizing this,

I understood my state,

The life I lived so far,

Was without understanding,

Waking up now,

Seems useless,

Understanding this,

I came to you to explain.

6.

No matter how I lived,

Thinking and lamenting,

Over it is useless,

Yet I know your grace,

Has been with me,

That is why I lived,

This realization,

Makes sense to me.

7.

Even after understanding,

I came to ask,

Something from you,

Lord, I approached you,

If you understand but refuse,

To give an answer,

How will I untangle,

The final puzzle?

8.

This is not new to me,

You have done this before,

After creating me,

I did not know,

The responsibility you had,

I never asked you,

But now I seek,

Understanding from you.

9.

You abandoned your position,

As the creator,

To save me,

Thinking about this,

Understanding my state,

Since you lived like me,

Please give me the answer,

Understanding my situation.

BT Song 1105

After reading the accounts by Rev. John Stott in his biography, I contemplated God seeking us and us seeking God. Generally, while people seek God for various needs, Muktiveda says that God sought us. Though in the Indian bhakti tradition, there is a similar thought of God coming to seek the bhakta to ‘thaduttankolla’ (to save or prevent), the common perception of mukti is that we need to seek God to be saved. As I meditated on this inspiration, I wrote this song.

“Have we ever opened our door to Christ? Have we ever invited him in?” This was exactly the question that needed to be put to me. Intellectually, I had believed in Jesus all my life, but from a distance. I had struggled to pray through the keyhole. I had even tried to appease him with offerings under the door. I was baptized, yes, and confirmed as well. I attended church, read my Bible, held high ideals, and tried to be good and do good. But all the while, often without realizing it, I kept Christ at arm’s length, keeping him outside. I knew that opening the door could have profound consequences. I am deeply grateful to him for enabling me to do so. Looking back over more than fifty years, I realize that this simple step has changed the entire direction, course, and quality of my life. {Stott, John R. W. Life in Christ, Eastbourne: Kingsway, 1991. [Note: In the bibliography, there is no 1991c, only 1991a and 1991b. I took the reference from 1991b.—db]} — Timothy Dudley-Smith, John Stott: The Making of a Leader, London: InterVarsity Press, 1999, reprint 2002, p. 95.

BT Song 1105 – Seeking the Divine

If we speak of the Divine,

He must seek to find us,

Understanding the necessity,

And strive to attain Him.

As I go on my search,

If it becomes my destination,

Would being like the Divine

Serve any purpose for me?               1

How should I

Search for Him?

How can I

Reach Him?

What do I need

When I’m unsure?

How can I

Find Him?                           2

Understanding this reality,

I grasp its significance.

What I’ve sought

And come to realize,

Just as a mother guides,

He must come

And give Himself

For me to receive.                             3

Such a Divine presence,

Up till now within Him,

You alone, O Lord,

Nowhere else.

I searched and came,

Standing at the threshold,

Seeking permission to enter,

But no one inquired.                         4

Your simplicity,

Unknown to the world,

No matter where we seek,

We cannot find.

Thus, to understand Him,

Even for those who do not perceive,

Open the door

Yet the path remains unknown.                      5

To search and discover,

We must resolve ourselves.

Inviting the Divine,

We must call out.

When He comes to us,

Open the door

And He must give Himself.                             6

BT Song 1105 – Seeking the Divine

If we say ‘God’,

He must seek us,

Understand the need,

And strive towards it.

When I go seeking,

If it becomes a destination,

Would it be beneficial

To be like God?                 1

How should I

Seek Him?

How should I

Attain Him?

What is necessary for me

When I do not know?

How should I

Reach Him?                        2

Understanding this nature,

I realized its position.

What I have sought

And understood,

Like a mother nurtures,

He must come

And give Himself

To receive me.                    3

Such a divine,

Till now in Him,

You alone, O Lord,

Nowhere else.

I searched and came,

Standing at the door,

Permission to enter,

No one asked.                     4

Your simplicity,

The world does not know.

No matter where we search,

We cannot find.

Therefore, to know Him,

Even to those who do not understand,

Open the door

And the way remains unknown.                     5

To seek and find,

We must resolve.

Inviting the divine,

We must call.

When He comes to us,

Open the door

And must give Himself.                   6

BT Song 1105 – Seeking the Divine
