BT Songs 111 to 115

111.                   Give grace to live each day

Oh God you help me

To live one day at a time.

Oh you Master protect me

Not to be crushed by worldly desires.

If I continue to live with constraints

Then each day will go with fear

If you don’t keep your compassion on me

The time will go with much trouble in heart.

Why this much anger from you

Why this much hesitation on your part?

On this bhakta of yours?

To live each day with lots of struggles?

Future is a vain dream

Past is gone with lots of struggle

The present is the only reality

Even if that too becomes a struggle what can I do?

I don’t know what is good or bad

I act as per your wish on this stage

Deciding is your responsibility

I don’t have any personal choice in this.

            26-06-2001. Ranikhet

The context is this poem is again an uncertainty about my future that loomed over me on those days.  Where to have some place for me to stay was the question for me?  During this time Chakaravarthy was seriously searching for a place for an ashram and he wrote a long email regarding it somewhere near Thally (in 2001). Though I moved and was staying at Hosur in a rented house soon that too will come to an end.  That time, thinking about my future, I wrote this song.  Though I strongly believe in God’s respect for our free will, yet once I totally surrender my life, then I surrender that too to Him and will go as per His decision.  When I wrote this comment on 4th August 2014 at Mathigiri, this I strongly felt.

Song 112

This song is based on the Hindi song ‘Tumi hi mata’ [also from a Tamil movie [Kalathur Kannamma]  This is one of my favorite Hindi songs. As it has only two stanzas I added the last three stanzas to the Hindi song.  This Tamil version is not a verbatim translation.

112.                  Your my Mother and Father

You became my mother, father and brother

You became my friend on this earth

You came as my companion O Holy one

There is no one to show the way to me

Keeping your compassionate eyes on me, protect me

You uphold me by becoming father and mother

I weathered like an un-blossoming bud

Who dwells at your Holy Feet?

Keeping your compassionate eyes on me, protect me

You uphold me by becoming father and mother

I live like an unlearned fool

I become an ignorant without having any aim

Keeping your compassionate eyes on me, protect me

You uphold me by becoming father and mother

I am longing to see the Holy feet

And I  am bewildered not having that darshan

Keeping your compassionate eyes on me, protect me

You uphold me by becoming father and mother

Other than your grace, what else do I need?

You should show the light in this life

Keeping your compassionate eyes on me, protect me

You uphold me by becoming father and mother

            23-12-2003. Mathigiri, (Hosur)

Though I wrote this song in Tamil, I like the Hindi version more.  The words and meaning are very beautiful.  There are other such songs which do not mention the name of any God but are wonderful with meaning (Ithana Shakti hame dena data; Tu pyaar ka sagar etc.) and I never hesitate to sing them in my personal worship.  And we also use it in our mandali.

Already I have shared my view about using such bhajans borrowed from our Hindu religious tradition. So I need not repeat it again here.

113.                  An autobiography

I am not honest in my heart

And I knew it O my God as it is

I become dead in my mean mind

I understood my mean mind O master

In this life which I live everyday

There is no honesty in my thought

Like a mad man having a corrupt brain

I go as I like in this life

Though I know the truth

I never took courage to implement it

I am coward not having any personal strength

I told this to you

What other than this can I tell you

How am I going to express my inner heart?

O Lord as you knew all these

I need not tell taking many words

By the compassion which you show everyday

I live this life.

17-05-2004. Mathigiri (Hosur), Tamilnadu

One blessed thing with the Lord is that without any rituals, formalities and even any kind of preparation—at any time I can go and sit silently in His presence.  I don’t even need any special place like a prayer room.  But I will be careful to keep a pencil and a paper to write down the song that might come that time.  This song too on one such occasion.  For me the truth in my spiritual journey, when I sit for worship and prayer, more and more of my own shortcomings come before me than any other thought about what God has done for me.  Of course I am overwhelmed by such thoughts, but overcoming them, as I meditate about the grace of God, I feel some release in my atman as I am redeemed by Him to worship with this limitation.  What a wonderful blessing in the Lord.

114.      I should do your will

I should do only your Will—my Lord

Not doing anything according to my will—I should do….

Thinking properly what I want to do

By the mind which gone astray–I should do only

Is there any limit for the lust of the eyes?

It is better to live without the eyes–I should do only

Is it correct to be deluded by the lust of the flesh?

Is it possible for one quench the fire by pouring ghee in it? –I should do only

How I am bragging thinking about my life

But living as a mean rascal is the realty

The three defilements (malas) are nowhere else

None is putting any stumble for my mukti

            24-05-2004. Mathigiri (Hosur)

Like others several times in my life too I struggled with the lust of the eyes, lust of the flesh and pride of this life.  Those times my thought would be echoing Gita’s sloka (6:6) that ‘my own atman is my enemy and my own atman is my friend’.  I don’t want to blame the evil one for all the stumbling for my normal struggle as a human.  I strongly believe that though I cannot stop the bird from flying over my head, I can still stop it from nesting on my head.  And tapas is nothing but keeping a constant vigil over me not allowing anything to separate me from the love of God.

I find it easy to overcome the lust of the eyes and flesh, but the pride of life is a very subtle one.  Several times I think about what I am going to leave behind for someone to remember me?  As a single person, I cannot leave any lineage to continue my name.  All the artwork that I make and give to others will perish within a short time.  All my thoughts and emotions that I leave in writings will soon disappear.  But this longing for the pride of life often creates a stumbling blog to my atman.  To console myself, I will say, ‘every great personality of this universe like Muktinath, Muhammad, Rama, Krishna and Gandhi are a few exceptions.  Other great figures will be a small letter in the vast history of this universe.  Rest of the human beings are merely the space between the words to make others read the sentence clearly to understand the entire text.  Remain content one among the invisible, but important spaces of that history.’

115.                  Essence

If the essence is lost is there any use

Just think about this oh my heart

There is no other alternative to this in life

And there is no place to wander as one likes!

Food without salt is nothing but mere garbage

But the salt will become garbage if it lost its saltiness

To live as human is the truth in our life—but

If we forget this what will become our condition?

To live as a bhakta is your noble status

If you lost it then what will become your condition

That life which will become mere husk

Realizing this uphold God’s feet.

            26-05-2004. Mathirigi

In our bhakti in the Lord however knowledge (jnana) and karma are important; having our personal relationship with the Lord is the most important one. As someone once said that ‘faith begins as a relationship with the Person (Muktinath)…’ rest is only a means for us to further grow in the Lord.  Neither through karma or jnana one received the grace as it was a free gift from God. But we can grow without having jnana.  And we may fail to do our karma properly in the Lord. But without bhakti that relationship (faith) is impossible.
