BT Song 1111

In the recent past, I was reading books related to sociology, anthropology, biography, history, etc. When I got another book on bhakti, my spirit was stirred by the very concept of bhakti. As I was reading the book: William J. Jackson’s “Songs of Three Great South Indian Saints,” New Delhi, Oxford University Press (1998), Paperbacks 2002, I began to meditate upon bhakti and wrote this song after reading a few more pages.

BT Song 1111: Devotion is the Only Way

Understanding the greatness of devotion,

Taking pride in being a devout one,

Filling oneself with pure devotion,

Living humbly as a devoted one.

Nothing surpasses the essence of devotion,

Living as a devout one carries no burden,

For liberation, there is no better path,

No other way is fully known.

Vedas and scriptures, all of them,

Do not show this simple way,

Those who have done needless research,

Have not attained the desired state.

With simple devotion, open your heart,

Invite the divine to enter within,

Give your body and mind to Him,

Blend and unite with Him.

Making love the key, knowing Him,

Living with Him inside and out,

Forgetting separation entirely,

Living on earth, bowing at His feet.

Only one thing is needed for this,

Realize that it is devotion,

Seek nothing else apart from this,

Attain this by thinking of Him alone.

BT Song 1111 Devotion is the Only Way

Understanding the greatness of devotion

Taking pride in being a devotee

Filling oneself with devotion

One should live humbly as a devotee

There is nothing greater than devotion

There is no burden in living as a devotee

There is no path better than this for liberation

There is no other way fully known

The Vedas, Agamas, and scriptures

Do not show the simple way

Those who do unnecessary research

Do not attain the desired state

With simple devotion, open the heart

Invite God to come inside

Give your mind along with your body to Him

Unite and blend with Him

Make love the tool and know Him

Live with Him both inside and outside

Completely forget separation

Live on earth bowing at His feet

For this, only one thing is needed

That is to understand devotion

Do not seek anything other than this

Achieve this by thinking of Him alone

BT Song 1112

Serving others by knowing their needs is one thing, but serving them by understanding their weaknesses is much greater. This is what God has done in our Lord for us. When we are weak, He steps in to give His shoulders. When we can manage on our own, He stands by. It is true that God helps those who help themselves, but He serves those who cannot help themselves. This is His will for all His bhaktas as well.

BT Song 1112: Your Will

Without a word,

You stayed with me,

Knowing what I need,

Before I could see,

Prepared everything,

Before I could ask,

Timed it right,

Completed the task.

Until I came,

And started to speak,

You stood by,

In silence so meek,

Before my mouth,

Could open to say,

You understood,

From my eyes’ sway.

Understanding my burden,

Knowing my weakness,

When needed, you offered,

Your shoulder with kindness,

When I was strong,

You stood aside,

But always close,

Never to hide.

No one has understood,

Me like you do,

No one knows my heart,

And sees me through,

Is this why you came,

Seeking me out?

Though divine, you served,

Without a doubt.

I’ve never met anyone,

Quite like you,

I don’t understand,

Why you do what you do,

But knowing the reason,

Matters not at all,

Even if known,

It wouldn’t stall.

You served the servants,

Lived helping those in need,

Seeking the needy,

In every good deed,

And knowing this wasn’t,

Enough for our plight,

You came to save us,

Shining your light.

Though sought by all,

As the divine,

You came to us,

Seeking to align,

Through this you made,

Yourself understood,

And made it our will,

To follow the good.

Accepting this truth,

I came as your slave,

To serve humbly,

And others to save,

Seeking the needy,

And helping in strife,

Serving and bowing,

To you all my life.

BT Song  1112 Your Will

Verse 1

Without saying a word,

You stayed with me,

Knowing my needs,

Preparing before I asked,

At the right time,

You brought what I needed.

Verse 2

Until I came to speak,

You stood quietly,

Understanding my thoughts,

Even before I opened my mouth,

You understood from a glance.

Verse 3

Understanding all my burdens,

Knowing my weaknesses,

You offered your shoulder,

When I needed support,

And stepped back,

When I gained strength.

Verse 4

No one else understands me like you,

No one else knows my heart like you,

Is this why you came to me?

Even as God, you served me.

Verse 5

I have never seen anyone like you,

I don’t understand the reason for this,

But it doesn’t matter,

Even if I knew,

It wouldn’t change anything.

Verse 6

You served the servants,

Sought out those in need,

And realizing this wasn’t enough,

You gave yourself to save us.

Verse 7

Though you are the God everyone seeks,

Why did you come seeking us?

Through this, you made us understand you,

And made it our will too.

Verse 8

Accepting this,

I came to serve,

Stood ready to work,

Sought out those in need,

Served and bowed at your feet.

BT Song 1113

See: https://dayanandbharati.in/oh-my-god-part-two/

BT Song 1113 Stands Beyond Limits

Buddhi not understanding,

Heart not experiencing,

Anybody can say in words,

Thousands of things.

How am I to convey,

About God,

Who came and

Dwells in my heart?

Though we comprehend,

Through the Veda,

Yet we haven’t discovered

The way to express about Him.

However we articulate,

Using words,

There’s no outlet

For the inner experience.

As I lived,

Unaware,

What exactly

Is my need.

He came willingly,

And resides quietly,

In my heart,

Without even divulging it.

He who transcends

All religions,

Yet accepted willingly

My limited heart.

When I asked who came within me,

‘Who are you?’

‘I am the Lord of mukti,

Whom you sought,’ he replied.

Though people

Speak thousands of names,

For God,

Who has no name?

He became Muktesan,

For me, granting

The liberation

I was seeking.

God who is

Without name or form,

Accepted that name

For my sake.

Though I worship Him,

By uttering that name,

Yet He remains

Beyond my intellect and heart.

Hence, unable to

Share more about it,

I will worship Him

Only in my spirit.

BT Song 1113 Stands Beyond Limits

Buddhi not understanding

Heart not experiencing

Anybody can say in words

Thousands of things

How am I going to share

About God

Who came and

Dwells in my heart

Though we understood

Through the Veda

Still we didn’t find

The way to express about Him

However we share

By forming words

There is no let-out

For the inner experience

When I lived

Not even knowing

What actually

Is my requirement

He came voluntarily

And dwells silently

In my heart

Not even sharing about it

The one who

Transcends all religion

Still voluntarily accepted

My limited heart

When I asked who came within me

‘Who are you’?

‘I am the Lord of mukti

Which you sought’ he responded

Though people

Utter thousands of names

For God

Who does not have any name?

He became Muktesan

For me as he gave

The deliverance

Which I was seeking

God who is

Without any name and form

Accepted that name

For my sake

Though I worship him

By uttering that name

Still he stands

Beyond my buddhi and heart

Therefore unable to

Share much about it further

I will worship him

Only in my spirit

BT Song 1114

Last night, due to a severe headache, I got up around 2:00 am. I could not sleep. I didn’t have the strength to get up from bed to do any work. After tossing and turning without sleep until 4:00 am, I got up with a murmur and made a cup of hot water to drink. Then I retired to bed and continued to toss without sleep until 5:30 am. I managed to sleep for 45 minutes and got up by 6:15 am to do my routine work. During the day, I couldn’t take proper rest. The whole day was almost wasted, unable to do my regular work. I couldn’t do my regular exercise, reading, walking, etc. Finally, at night, when I became irritated, before reading Muktiveda, I spoke to the Lord the first line in Tamil. To vent my anger, I first wrote this song except for the final stanza. After my regular readings, I went to bed after 12:00 am. But again, I got up at 2:00 am. Once I get up in the middle of the night, it takes me a few days to catch up on my regular sleep. Unable to sleep and unable to get up, I began to argue and fight with the Lord. Finally, I told Him that though He came as a human, He somehow forgot some basic needs for our life as He resumed His duty as God. Then I wrote the final stanza in my mind and completed the song this morning.

There is no reason for either God or me to blame my mind for this. I know it is the problem of my brain, which constantly thinks on various topics when I wake up in the middle of the night, refusing to let me catch my sleep again. In the past, I used to get up from bed and sit and type my thoughts to stop the disturbance of my brain. But these days, I cannot do it as I don’t have much strength left after doing every task in the house. The result is not only sleeplessness but also irritation and anger against God. Finally, He too owes some responsibility for a bhakta and is answerable to her. This kind of song is called ‘ninda stuti’—praising through blaming.

BT Song 1114: You Won’t Understand

When you don’t know my state,

Who can I complain to, where can I relate?

When you don’t reveal what I need to know,

Why should I waste my time, asking you though?

Have I ever asked for a miraculous sign?

Have I ever demanded what’s not mine?

For everyone, you provide naturally,

Why deny only me, tell me honestly.

Don’t say it’s all my fault, please,

Don’t stir up anger and unease.

Blaming the heart I can’t control,

Don’t push your responsibility onto my soul.

After giving everything for you to hold,

Don’t try to make me responsible, so bold.

Remember, I’m just a servant to your call,

Don’t ever forget this, not at all.

We can live without food or water for a while,

But without this, no one can survive a mile.

This natural law, so well defined,

I can’t explain it further to your mind.

Fine, you don’t understand my situation here,

You don’t even feel the need to care.

To the one who watches without a blink,

The value of sleep, you’ll never think.

Though you’re divine, yet human you became,

Forgetting human needs, isn’t it a shame?

Every day without rest or sleep,

Coming to you, my sorrow to keep.

Mathigiri, 28-07-2019, Night, 10:30 PM

BT Song 1114 You Won’t Understand

When you too don’t understand my condition,

To whom shall I go and complain?

When you refuse to give, knowing my need,

Why should I ask you unnecessarily?

Did I ever ask you to perform any miracle or wonder?

Did I ever ask for any unnecessary tasks?

As you bestow to everyone, which is part of nature,

Why do you deny only me? Better tell me that.

Don’t say that I am responsible for this.

Don’t unnecessarily provoke my irritation and anger

By blaming the mind which is not under my control.

Don’t shirk your responsibility.

Once I gave everything to you,

Don’t try to make me responsible for everything.

Never forget, even for a day,

That I am merely a slave who runs your errands.

We can manage to live for a few days without food and water,

But it is impossible for anyone to live without them.

I cannot say more about this to you,

Who has made this a part of nature.

It is true that you cannot understand this situation,

There is no need for that from you.

The one who protects us without blinking an eye,

You cannot understand the greatness of SLEEP.

Though you were a god and came as human,

Why did you forget this human need?

Is it mere waste for this slave to come and lament

Every day without sleep to you?

BT Song 1115

As I was reading the following song by Purandaradasa, I wrote this song inspired by it:

Pamanavadare (PDS@ Vol. 1, no, 49, p. 161)

For him who takes God’s holy name

humiliation is most welcome

To one who takes God’s holy name

to be insulted is not to be shunned

Ego is built on respect others give you

your tapas is lost when you’re given respect

egoistic Duryodhana was ruined

but there’s no doubt about one who can take

          respect and humiliation with equanimity

for one who says God’s holy name humiliation is welcome

Through humiliation one’s sadhana flourishes

One’s good deeds become fruitful when you’re humbled

because of trying tribulations and humiliations

Lord Vishnu came to save the child Dhurva

for him who takes the holy name humiliation is welcome

Where will I go, and what will I do?

As long as you are there O Vithala, Lord

of forest-dwelling yogis, protector of the poor

                    I don’t want for anything—except humiliation

–with humiliation I’m able to get you

so for him who takes God’s holy name

                              humiliation is most welcome.—p.82

@S.K. Ramachandra Rao, ed., Purandara Sahitya Darshna, Four Volumes, Bangalore, The Directorate of Kannada and Culture, Government of Karnataka, 1985

While in the bhakti tradition, humiliation is welcomed because of bhakti; in some sannyasa traditions, it is earned by deliberately acting in strange and violent ways so that others might humiliate and despise them, which will remove their past karmas and increase merit. See Thomas McEvilley, “Shape of Ancient Thought: Comparative Studies in Greek and Indian Philosophies,” Delhi, Motilal Banarsidass Publishers (2002), First Indian Edition, 2008, pp. 231-232 for ‘The tradition of the asceticism of dishonor’ (p. 231).

Though we need human relationships to live as humans, sometimes we need to seek the company of the Lord to have a personal relationship with Him, temporarily forgetting others to return with new strength to serve them. The same is the case with humiliation, which helps us to introspect and correct our faults.

BT Song 1115: I Came to Speak

Honor and disgrace,

Respect given face to face,

All from humans it seems,

Understanding these dreams.

Whatever may come my way,

Knowing it’s all the same each day,

In devotion’s warm embrace,

Finding your grace.

No place, no name,

No ties, no one to claim,

In this worldly race,

Thinking of your grace.

A life lived just for you,

Knowing this truth so pure and true,

Renouncing deeds that are wrong,

In my heart, you belong.

All actions left behind,

Thinking of you in my mind,

Holy one, I remember,

In my heart, you’re tender.

In solitude, I came alone,

Bowing at your throne,

Sitting by your side,

In your presence, I confide.

Wishing for moments like these,

For you to come and please,

Bonding with you this way,

Hoping you would stay.

Opening my heart to speak,

Joy within, I seek,

Filling my soul with delight,

With you, everything’s right.

BT Song  1111
