116. Good share
I should seek only a good portion
What else do I require in this world?
Removing evil acts to a far distance
Completely removing wrong paths
Straighten the crooked heart
Removing the darkness from the heart—I should seek….
Anger, jealousy and the gossiping mind
The heard heart which utters hurtful words
The things which are shame to share
And not to do these and seek your feet—I should seek
01-07-2004. Mathigiri
When I was meditating about the Martha and Mary story, I thought about what that ‘good portion’ that Mary chooses. Of course our Lord Himself is that ‘good portion’. However, removing all kinds of evil thoughts and acts are the by- product of that relationship with the Lord.

117. I should have relationship
Every day I should live
Having a relationship with you in my inner being
When you come to have fellowship with me
I should not put any stumbling block
When you hug me as a mother
I should become like a crying baby
When you encourage me by patting
I should bow at your feet to learn from you
As an elder brother when you show me the path
I should follow you without any hesitation
When you took me on your shoulder as a friend
I should close my eyes by falling on it
When you come unto me with love
I should dwell on your chest
In whichever form of relationship you come
I should live with you in my inner being.

The bhakti tradition portrays our relationship with the lord through all kinds of human relationship and each has its own sentiment value. For example I say that when my Lord comes to me as a mother, then I should become a crying baby. Whereas when He comes to me as the encouraging father, I should bow at His feet to learn from Him. The reason is that in Indian tradition we can demand even by pestering a mother. Whereas when it comes to the father, one should have some kind of reverence to learn from him about life. The way I fall on His shoulder as a friend is different from the way I will dwell on His chest as a lady love.
The bhakti tradition describes this relationship as bhava (attitude towards God) which are six: 1) dasya (servant); 2) sakhya (friend); 3) vatsalya (parental/filial); 4) santa (child); 5) kanta (wife); and 6) madhurya or rati (romantic lover). And bhakti caters to the need of a particular need to meet our emotional needs of that time.

118. Bestow your grace
If I have that much love
Will I live this kind of life?
How limited is my love
Is it possible for me to tell them?
I cannot wash your feet with my tears
I cannot bow at your feet with my head
I don’t think you in my heart even for a moment
But I live a life as I like!
Did you give forgiveness in small measure?
Is it possible for me to tell the account of my sin?
However you forgave me
Yet I don’t have true love for you is the contention now
Not realizing the need of forgiveness
O king don’t you know I live with a corrupt mind
What else I will beg other than the freedom
I uphold my hand in begging and you kindly bestow your grace
06-07-2004. Mathigiri.
Several times I feel that I take the forgiveness of God for granted. The measure of my love can never come closer to the greatness of His forgiveness. But the way I take it for granted often hurts me more than hurting God. Someone well said that grace is free but it is not cheap. For me it is not cheap because it costs the life of the Son of God, but as I received forgiveness freely, I take it cheaply. About this our Lord Himself said, ‘which one is easy to heal or forgive’. Though redemption is the main theme of the gospel yet from a human point of view the forgiveness of God highlights that redemption. Otherwise atonement will remain one way for me for the Lord doing His part because of compassion. I asked one young man why the Lord died for us on the Cross. After thinking for a few minutes he said, ‘as God alone created us, He is also responsible for our sin. So He has to die for us.’ His simple understanding as a Hindu reflects the common view of many people. But the forgiveness from God makes me worthy to receive His grace. The atonement is one time act, but forgiveness from God never stops just for one time. Otherwise I won’t be qualified to receive his grace.
Of course I understand the subtle theological point that the atonement which highlights God forgiving our sin. At the same time the grace highlights that forgiveness is not just a one time event in my life.

119. Bow unto you
Oh Son of God I worship you
Who came as guru and become grace (in my life)
I worship you through my relationship (as a bhakta)
And not merely with an intellectual understanding.
You became the refuge for those
Who surrender to you as the only hope!
I bow unto you all the time
Who gave jnana by removing darkness
18-08-2004. Mathigiri, (Hosur)
Though I don’t believe in my intellectual capacity or need to understand and worship the Lord yet I give much importance to wisdom which He bestows to us. Vidya is different from Jnana in Indian tradition (I Cor. 12:8?). But Vidya is not limited only to learning through the text but all kinds of learning. Sometimes we acquire vidya from other sources like listening to sat-sangh (sermons), bhajans, reading books and commentaries on Muktiveda. Though they are good and need for our sadhana yet they too come under the need for our intellect. So intellectual understanding about the Lord either through Muktiveda or any other means is different from the Jnana. For me this Jnana is the new insight which will enhance our bhakti in the Lord through our personal relationship with Him. With or without the aid of vidya God can give that inspiration in our spirit and in this the role of Guru to prepare His disciple is very important. And I thank God for becoming that guru for me.
The concept of Guru is unique in Indian tradition. Transcending sectarian views it is even a pan Indian concept covering all aspects of life. Even transcending sectarian gods he or she is even considered as the eternal Brahman as the famous sloka depicts:
gurur brhama gurur visnu gurur devo mahesvarah/
guruh saksat param brahma tasmaisrigurave namah//
‘Guru is Brhama, guru is Visnu, guru is Siva; guru indeed is the supreme Brahman. Salutations to that guru’. – Swami Sivananda , Guru Gita in Sarva-Gita Sara, Tehri-Garhwal: The Divine Life Society, 2012 (fourth edition), quoted in Augustine Thottakara CIM, The Gita and the Gitas, Bangalore, Dharmaram Publications, 2014.p. 58
At the same time without a disciple there can be no guru. About this Thottakara says:
…a guru is born when a disciple approaches him for wisdom. Likewise a disciple emerges when he is accepted by a guru for spiritual formation…….Referring to them the Upanisads says: “Wonderful is the teacher, and smart is the disciple. Brilliant indeed is he who comprehends it when taught by an able teacher” (Katha Upanishad. II.7)….— Augustine Thottakara CIM, The Gita and the Gitas, Bangalore, Dharmaram Publications, 2014.p. 43
However the origin and growth of guruism is so complex that we cannot understand it from any one particular point of view. Like all other Indian concepts it speaks from various views and voices.

120. I should recognize you
Saranam
I should recognize you Oh my Lord
When you come every day to have fellowship with me
Pallavi
For my spirit to be stirred to burn like a fire
When you will teach me with one word—I should recognize you….
Like a wandering man in life
When I stumble not knowing the way
For you to hold my hands
So that for me to over come the world—I should recognize you….
Without a place of your own to stay
You too wandered on this earth to do seva
But there is a place for you to stay
And my heart is that place for you to rest—I should recognize you….
Oh my father you should come unto me
To have my heart as your temple
I won’t allow you to let go
Even if you desire to have some other place to dwell—I should recognize you….
2004.
This is one of my favourite songs. I wrote this after reading Luke 24:13-35. When I wrote this song I remembered what Manikkavasagar said (already quoted in BT song 19) I caught your feet firmly following you. Where else now can you go?

Bhakti tradition highlights the heart as the temple of bhagavan to dwell. There is a famous story about it in Periyapuranam. When the Pallava king Kadava Peruman constructed a grand temple for Siva at Kanchi(puram) and arranged for the consecration of it (kumbabishegam) a particular auspicious day was selected for it. But Siva appearing in his dream said to change the date as he is not available that date. When the king asked the reason for it, Siva said that Pusal Nayanar of Thirunindravur had invited his presence to come and dwell in another temple which he constructed. When the king with much anxiety went to see the temple there was no temple but the bhakta was busy in his regular sadhana. When the king requested him to show the temple which he constructed, then the bhakta revealed the temple which he constructed in his heart for which he arranged the consecration on the same day.
