BT Song 1336
This morning, I was expecting a particular answer from the Lord. I don’t expect Him to speak directly to me or through scripture, but rather through the responses of those involved in decision-making. However, there was no response. After my morning meal, as I sat quietly, the first line of this song came to mind. I wrote it to express my thoughts to the Lord, teasingly suggesting that He should provide some response or continue to listen to songs like this one.
BT Song 1336 What is the answer
Simple English Version
Here is my answer
To your question
Where is your answer
For my question
When there’s
A relationship
Responsibilities will
Come naturally
If I ask this
Why do you get upset
You seem to
Hate me somehow
When no one else
Asks you anything
Why do you make
Excuses when I ask
Sure, you have
Many responsibilities
You have time
Only for them
But when it comes
To my needs
Where does
Your responsibility go
I didn’t ask
For any special favor
Whatever the answer is
I won’t refuse it
But showing
This kind of bias
Is not
Right at all
But now
That’s not possible
You can’t escape
From me
Don’t think
I’m like others
I will trouble you
By talking like this
If you give
Some kind of answer
The burden in my heart
Will go away
But if there’s
No answer from you
My heart will only
Long for it more
Hearing this kind
Of scolding so often
You have accepted them
Even as praise
Don’t think
Even in your dreams
That I will stop
Asking questions
Then writing
Poems like this
I will sing them
For you to hear
But understanding
Your responsibility
If you give an answer
I will sing your praises

BT Song 1336 What is the answer
Classical English Version
Here is my answer,
To thy question dear,
Where is thy answer,
To my query here?
When there exists
A bond so fine,
Responsibilities
Will intertwine.
If I pose this,
Why dost thou fret?
Thou seemest to
Bear a grudge yet.
When no one else
Dares question thee,
Why make excuses
Only for me?
Verily thou hast
Duties galore,
Time only for
Responsibilities more.
But when it concerns
My humble plea,
Wherefore vanisheth
Thy duty to me?
I asked not for
Special concession,
Whatever thou sayest,
I’ll make no objection.
But to show
Such discrimination,
Is not at all
A just proclamation.
But that, alas,
No more can be,
Thou canst not flee
From facing me.
Think me not
As others may,
I will persist,
And have my say.
If thou bestowest
Some form of reply,
The weight on my heart
Will softly fly.
But if silence
Is all I receive,
My heart shall ache,
And ever grieve.
Oft hearing this
Reproachful chide,
Thou took it as
Praises beside.
Dream not even
In slumber deep,
That I shall cease
My queries to keep.
Then writing verses
Such as these,
I shall sing them,
Thy heart to appease.
But if thy duty
Thou dost comprehend,
And give answer,
Thy praises I’ll send.

BT Song 1337
My mother became very upset and was lamenting from 5:30 to 7:00 pm. She has her grievances, which I understand, but I do my best to care for her within my limitations. Her ideal is to move back to Mathigiri and stay there with me. If she has to stay with others, she wants me to be there too. Her only demand is that I should not leave her under any circumstances, including my own health issues.
This morning, around 2:00 am, I couldn’t sleep, thinking about her needs. I didn’t want to get up and do anything. I couldn’t concentrate. I began to wrestle with the Lord in my heart, demanding certain things to help my mother live peacefully. I felt He didn’t consider my feelings and hurt me too much. Upset with Him, I got up and, by the dim light in our room, wrote this song. As usual, I ended the song teasingly, asking Him to choose between a bhakta or a slave.
I am not the only bhakta contending with the Lord. Even Purandaradasa says in one song…
O Lord, if you’re called ‘affectionate
To his devotees’ shouldn’t you be more
Accountable, responsive to their needs?
Who else is such a divine trickster
As Lord Purandara Vithala, supreme
Lord of liberation—but it all works out, tit for tat
O Lord of the universe
You enable the attainment
Of victory for your devotees. {Muyaakee, in Ramachandra Rao, S.K. Purandara Sahitya Darshana, 4 vols, Bangalore: Directorate of Kannada and Culture, Government of Karnataka, 1985. Purandara Sahitya Darshana, vol. I, song 53, p. 169}, in William J. BT Song 1337 Bhakta or Slave
Simple English Version
What did I ask,
And what did you give?
What kind of game is this?
Better tell me that.
Don’t I know,
When and what,
And how,
I should ask?
And won’t you,
Understand that?
Why give me,
Something else now?
If my asking,
Is not correct,
Better tell,
That to me.
If I fail to,
Communicate well,
Help me to,
Speak clearly.
But not doing that,
Is it right,
To give me,
Whatever you prefer?
Should I accept,
Whatever you give,
Without asking,
Any questions?
Though you have,
The right to do so,
Is it right,
To ignore my feelings?
Can anyone think,
That only humans,
Can have,
Humanity?
Won’t you have,
That too?
You lived,
And died as a human.
Suppose you,
Don’t have humanity,
Better tell me,
Do you have divinity?
If you don’t have both,
But only authority,
Better you tell,
That to me.
Then listening,
To what you say,
And accepting what you give,
I’ll live as a slave.
Renouncing my position,
As your devotee,
I’ll live on,
Without devotion.
Then surely,
You will understand,
How your authority,
Really is.
How hard it is,
To rule a nation,
With only slaves,
As citizens.
Do you want,
Slaves who obey,
Or devotees,
Who enjoy relationship?
Decide between,
One of the two,
Then I’ll tell,
The rest to you.

BT Song 1337 Bhakta or Slave
Classical English Version
What did I ask,
And what didst thou give?
What kind of play is this?
Better tell only that to me.
Dost thou not know,
When and what,
And how,
I should ask?
And dost thou not,
Understand that?
Why shouldst thou,
Give that to me now?
If my asking,
Be not correct,
Better tell,
That to me.
If I fail to,
Communicate well,
Help me to,
Speak clearly.
But not doing that,
Tell me, is it right,
To give me,
Whatever thou prefer?
Should I accept,
Whatever thou give,
As per thy desire,
Without questioning thee?
Though thou hast,
The right to do so,
Is it right,
To crush my feelings?
Can anyone think,
That only humans,
Alone can have,
Humanitarianism?
Wilt thou not have,
That too,
As thou came and lived,
And died as a man?
Suppose thou,
Dost not have humanity,
Better tell,
Dost thou have divinity?
If thou hast neither,
But only authority,
Better tell,
That to me.
Then listening,
To what thou say,
And accepting what thou give,
I shall live as a slave.
Renouncing my position,
As thy bhakta,
Let me live on,
Without doing bhakti.
Then surely,
Wilt thou understand,
The nature of thy authority.
How difficult it is,
To rule a nation,
With only slaves,
As its citizens.
Dost thou want,
Slaves who obey,
Or dost thou need bhaktas,
To enjoy relationship?
Decide between,
One of the two,
Then shall I tell,
The rest to thee.

BT Song 1338
God allows many struggles in a bhakta’s life to test our bhakti. This is a common theme in all bhakti traditions. However, I have my own view on this. Though I cannot avoid struggles and trials in life, I believe God never allows them to test my bhakti. He gave bhakti for fellowship, a source of mutual joy. When I struggle unnecessarily, especially with secondary issues like day-to-day life (the primary issue being my relationship with Him), it feels like a test. Recently, the helper left suddenly due to personal reasons, and I ended up taking care of my mother and the property on my own. The couple who help come only in the morning for two hours, leaving me to handle everything else. At night, when I sat with the Lord, I questioned the trials He allows, as they affect not only my spirit but also my bhakti, in which He too suffers along with me.
Swamiji,
I have never felt that God allows or sends troubles to test my faith, as if I am being graded or evaluated. I believe troubles occur as part of this fallen world. Jesus knows what it is like to live in it; He was “tempted in all just as we are” (Hebrews 4:15). He understands and stands with us through it all.
God bless.

Yes, Dr. Hoefer, I completely agree with you. But what the intellect understands, the heart sometimes refuses to accept, especially when I struggle alone. My poems reflect my current situation more clearly than any theological reflections my intellect accepts. Thanks for your comments.

BT Song 1338 Unnecessary Struggle
Simple English Version
What have I gained
By being your devotee?
What use is intellect,
When I still became a fool?
I babble on,
For I am troubled a lot,
What else can,
This ignorant person do?
Don’t ask me,
Who else does not struggle?
I know well,
This is my struggle.
I am not lamenting,
Due to fear of struggle,
I am not denying,
That I won’t struggle.
But I still,
Cannot understand,
Why this struggle,
Now, unnecessarily?
What am I going,
To achieve through this?
Till now,
I cannot understand it.
If you want,
To achieve something,
I surely won’t,
Be useful to you.
Am I going to,
Achieve anything new,
That others,
Haven’t achieved before?
But if you want,
To achieve something new,
Better you,
Search for someone else.
It’s enough,
For me to be a devotee,
What more,
Is there to achieve?
Is the struggle,
The only means,
To test,
My devotion?
When I come,
Unto you,
Do I need,
A separate struggle now?
Does devotion itself,
Need to be a struggle,
And do I need to struggle,
With you as a devotee?
Did you give devotion,
Only to struggle?
Did you redeem me,
Only to lament?
The aim of devotion,
Is to rejoice,
In a relationship,
By mingling with you.
Leaving that,
If I live struggling,
Then devotion itself,
Becomes a struggle.
Do I need to live,
In relationship with you,
Or should I,
Continue to struggle like this?
The final decision,
Is with you,
What to do,
Better tell that to me.

BT Song 1338 Unnecessary Struggle
classical English
What have I gained
By remaining as thy bhakta?
What use is intellect,
If I still be a fool?
I babble,
As I am much troubled,
What more,
Can this ignorant do?
Ask me not
Who else endures struggle;
I know well
This is my own plight.
I lament not
Out of fear of toil;
I deny not
That I will struggle.
Yet I cannot grasp
Why this struggle
Arises now,
Unnecessarily.
What am I to gain
Through such endeavor?
Till this hour,
I comprehend it not.
If thou seekest
To gain aught,
Be assured I shall
Not be of aid.
Shall I achieve
Anything novel,
Which others
Have not attained?
But if there be
Any new achievement,
Better thou seek out
Another for such task.
Sufficient it is
For me to remain as bhakta;
What more is there
To strive for?
Is struggle
The sole means
To test
My devotion?
When I approach
Thee, giving me
No separate struggle
Shall be needed.
Should devotion
Become a trial,
Must I contend
With thee as bhakta?
Didst thou grant devotion
Only for struggle?
Didst thou redeem me
Only to grieve?
The aim of devotion
Is to rejoice,
To mingle
In thy presence.
If, forsaking this,
I live in constant struggle,
Then devotion itself
Becomes a trial.
Must I dwell
In communion with thee,
Or must I
Continue to struggle thus?
The final decision
Rests with thee;
What to do,
Better thou tell me.

BT Song 1339
This song is a bit personal. I depend on others’ support to live here with my mother. When those who help me take advantage of my dependence, instead of confronting them, I silently show them I can manage several things on my own. I feel that everything I do, even day-to-day tasks, are acts of God accomplished through me. I know He won’t let me break and will send timely help to manage the situation. For the last few days, I’ve had to manage most of everyday life without help. Instead of giving up, I fight back with the Lord’s help, which gives me inner courage and physical strength. How long will it last? I don’t know, but I don’t easily give up under pressure unless it begins to affect others’ lives, especially my mother’s. After a long day, even when I’m physically tired and unable to rest properly, I find peace within me that gives me courage and strength.
BT Song 1339 I Get Peace
Simple English Version
There will be a reason,
For your acts,
Though it is hard,
For me to understand it.
But as you act,
With my welfare in mind,
When I think of this,
I get peace.
I know that,
Every movement is yours,
I also know,
You alone control everything.
Though I hesitate,
To act,
Still, as you control,
I act.
Though there are,
Shortcomings in what I do,
And there is a lack,
In doing with understanding.
I know for sure,
That the result,
Will be yours,
This I understood clearly.
As I know well,
About all my,
Shortcomings,
Within me.
I took courage,
And began to act,
Knowing well that,
All the acts are yours.
Fortunately,
I received you,
Therefore I also,
Understood myself properly.
Once this,
Knowledge came to me,
I give consent,
Whatever you do [in my life].
When I came unto you,
Taking refuge,
There came a peace,
Within me.
When I think about the,
Strength that it bestows,
I will continue to do your work,
Taking courage [in you].

BT Song 1340
Taking time to sit with the Lord is sadhana. It has many advantages. At the same time, ‘Practicing the Presence of God’ (the title of Brother Lawrence’s famous book) is upasana—worship. I enjoy both. When I get up very early and sit quietly with the Lord, I value that time as it helps me introspect and thank God for the help He sends through others. After spending some time in this way and feeling inspired, I wrote this song.
God not only suffered for us by taking our sin upon Him but continues to suffer with a bhakta in all her struggles. However, like a woman who suffers seeing the suffering of her beloved, a bhakta’s suffering increases as she sees that her circumstances force God to suffer along with her. While others may blame God, Time, or others for their suffering, a bhakta sees the Lord’s suffering in her own and requests Him to remove it, highlighting the difference between a bhakta and others. Bhakti views life and theology from a bhakti perspective.
BT Song 1340 I Will Continue to Do the Same
Simple English Version
What else can I do,
Other than this?
I will come,
And complain to you.
At any time,
I can come to you,
I can tell,
All my needs to you.
Others might,
Mock me saying,
This is nothing,
But a kind of mental disorder.
He is seeking a god,
Who is not even there,
Even if God exists,
He won’t come to help directly.
And they might,
Give advice to me,
To live practically,
By leaving these kinds of activities.
They shared,
Their experience,
They don’t know,
About my experience.
They don’t know that,
You will send someone,
To come,
And help directly.
You know for sure,
How to fulfill,
My needs, in which way and,
At what time.
And preparing me,
For that,
You will help me,
To live each day accordingly.
I know well that,
These are,
Not just,
Words of comfort.
As you are,
With me every day,
I shared,
My needs with you now.
You will give,
Clarity of mind,
And also provide,
Strength to the body.
Added to that,
You will give your grace,
For me to accept,
My situation in life.
Therefore I,
Again came to you,
And bow before you,
In thanksgiving.

BT Song 1340 I Will Continue to Do the Same
Classical English Version
What else can I do,
But this alone?
I shall come,
And complain to thee.
At any time,
I may come to thee,
And speak,
All my needs to thee.
Others may mock,
And say unto me,
This is but,
A kind of madness.
He seeks a god,
Who is not there,
Even if God be,
He will not come directly.
And they might,
Offer me counsel,
To live practically,
Forsaking such pursuits.
They shared,
Their own experience,
But they know not,
Of mine own.
They know not that,
Thou wilt send someone,
To come,
And aid me directly.
Thou knowest well,
How to fulfill,
My needs, in what way and,
At what time.
And in preparing me,
For this,
Thou shalt help me,
To live each day.
I know well,
These are not,
Mere,
Words of comfort.
As thou art,
With me each day,
I have shared,
My needs with thee.
Thou wilt give,
Clarity of mind,
And provide also,
Strength of body.
Moreover,
Thou shalt bestow thy grace,
That I may accept,
My state in life.
Thus I,
Return to thee,
And bow before thee,
In gratitude.

BT Song 1336 பதில் எங்கே
1
உனது கேள்விக்கு
என்பதில் இங்கே
எனது கேள்விக்கு
உன்பதில் எங்கே
உறவு ஒன்று
வந்த பின்னாலே
பொறுப்பென்ற ஒன்று
வந்திடும் தன்னாலே
2
அதையே கேட்டால்
உனக்கேன் கசப்பு
ஆயினும் உனக்கு
என்னிடம் வெறுப்பு
எவருமே கேள்வி
கேட்காத போது
நான்மட்டும் கேட்டால்
ஏனிந்தப் பசப்பு
3
அதுசரி உனக்குண்டு
ஆயிரம் பொறுப்பு
அதற்குமே நேரம்
உன்னிடம் உண்டு
எனக்கென மட்டும்
வந்திடும் போது
எங்கே போனது
உனது பொறுப்பு
4
தனியான சலுகை
கேட்கவில்லை
பதிலெது வாயினும்
மறுத்திட வில்லை
ஆயினும் ஓர
வஞ்சகம் கொண்டு
தட்டிக் கழிப்பது
மட்டும் சரியில்லை
5
