BT Songs 1411 to 1415

BT Song 1411

Another song depicting a tussle with God. As I often talk too much, either in prayer or through writing poems, I fail to hear the voice of the Lord. Therefore, I requested Him to take the initiative by giving me a hint about His plan well in advance so that I can be prepared to listen to Him silently by shutting my mouth.

BT Song 1411 Shut my mouth

 Simple English Version

1. Until you come on your own

And tell me,

There is nothing

For me to ask.

2. As you have done in the past,

Now you won’t do as I request,

Therefore now time has come

For me to listen to you.

3. So far,

I have asked

So many things

In the name of prayer.

4. Added to this,

In the name of writing poems,

I shared so many things

With you.

5. In between, if your voice

Ever tried to reach me,

I failed to listen

Because of so much noise that I made.

6. Though I read

Your Veda only for a few minutes,

I failed to listen

To what you want to convey.

7. More than this,

I often quarreled with you

By questioning

About not talking to me.

8. Now an end has

Come to this,

And time has come

For me to listen to you.

9. If you give a

Small hint about

How you are

Going to talk to me,

10. This servant will

Be prepared well ahead

And will

Wait for you to listen.

11. Not doing that,

If you remain silent

Like a mute,

What can I do?

12. Can I stop

Praying to you

Or could I stop

Writing poems?

13. Or can I control

The noise of my mind

In order to

Listen to you?

14. Keeping all this in your mind,

It is better for you

To come on your own

To talk to me.

15. How you are going

To do that

Is your problem,

But now shut my mouth.

Gurukulam, 28-07-2022, 10.30 p.m.

BT Song 1411 Shut my mouth

 Classical English Version

1. Until thou comest of thine own accord

And speak’st to me,

There is naught

For me to ask.

2. As thou hast done in times past,

Now thou wilt not heed my request,

Therefore the time hath come

For me to hearken unto thee.

3. Thus far,

I have petitioned

For many things

In the name of prayer.

4. Additionally,

In the guise of writing verse,

I have shared so much

With thee.

5. In between, if thy voice

E’er tried to reach me,

I failed to hear

Amidst the noise I didst create.

6. Though I perused

Thy Vedas for but a brief moment,

I failed to comprehend

What thou wouldst convey.

7. Moreover,

I oft did quarrel with thee,

Questioning

Why thou speakest not to me.

8. Now an end

Hath come to this,

And the time hath come

For me to hearken unto thee.

9. If thou givest

A mere hint

Of how thou wilt

Speak to me,

10. This servant

Will be prepared beforehand

And shall

Await thy words.

11. If thou dost not,

And remain’st silent

As a mute,

What then can I do?

12. Can I cease

My prayers to thee

Or refrain

From writing verse?

13. Can I still

The clamor of my mind

In order to

Hear thee?

14. Bearing all this in mind,

‘Tis better that thou

Come of thine own accord

To speak with me.

15. How thou wilt do

This thing

Is thine to solve,

But now, do thou shut my mouth.

BT Song 1412

We must ask God, knowing that before we ask, She already knows all our needs. However, when I do ask, my selfishness often overshadows my true needs. As a result, I sometimes hesitate to ask. At the same time, I expect God to know my needs and do what is best for me according to Her will. So, I finally left it up to Her to act wisely and provide for me before I even ask for anything.

 BT Song 1412 Be Smart

 Simple English Version

1. What is there for you to feel proud

Giving only after I have asked?

Your greatness lies in

Giving before I have asked.

2. But as you alone

Told me to ask,

I also came to ask you.

This is the truth now.

3. First, thinking

What I should ask,

Then I asked you

As per my need.

4. Going beyond the

Need of the body, heart,

And mind, there is a

Need for this soul.

5. But I feel shy

To share it,

As you knew

Well before I asked.

6. How much my shyness

Prevents me to ask,

Still, I have to listen to

What my heart says.

7. As desire never

Knows shyness,

I should ask

What I desired.

8. But when you give

On your own,

The blessings that I receive

Increase many fold.

9. And when you sanction

After I have requested,

My heart feels

Some kind of shortcoming in it.

10. Therefore, when

You give on your own,

Both my wellbeing and your greatness

Are accomplished.

11. Therefore, thinking

Which one is good for both,

Better you give

As a Smart Person.

Gurukulam, 28-07-2022, 10.30 p.m.

 BT Song 1412 Be Smart

 Classical English Version

1. What cause hast thou for pride,

In giving only when I have asked?

Thy greatness is revealed

In bestowing gifts unasked.

2. Yet, as thou alone

Commanded me to ask,

I have come to petition thee.

This now is truth.

3. First, pondering

What I should request,

Then I petitioned thee

According to my need.

4. Beyond the needs

Of body, heart, and mind,

There is a

Need for the soul.

5. Yet I am shy

To express it,

As thou knewest

Well before my asking.

6. How much my shyness

Hinders my request,

Still, I must heed

The voice of my heart.

7. For desire knows

No shyness,

I must seek

What my heart desires.

8. Yet when thou givest

Of thine own accord,

The blessings I receive

Are magnified.

9. When thou grantest

My requests,

My heart feels

A certain lack.

10. Therefore, when

Thou givest unbidden,

Both my welfare and thy greatness

Are fulfilled.

11. Hence, pondering

What is best for both,

‘Tis wiser that thou

Givest as a sage.

 BT Song 1413 Speak Clearly

 Simple English Version

1. When I ask you a question,

You answer with a riddle.

Why do you not speak plainly?

It is clarity that I seek.

2. Your words are like a puzzle,

Pieces that do not fit.

Why make it so hard

For me to understand?

3. I come to you for wisdom,

But leave more confused.

If you have the answers,

Why not share them clearly?

4. I know you are wise,

Beyond what I can grasp.

But a little simplicity

Would go a long way.

5. Do not wrap your truths

In layers I cannot peel.

Speak plainly to me,

So I may learn.

6. I am not asking for much,

Just a bit of light.

Your wisdom is a beacon,

But its rays are veiled.

7. Strip away the mystery,

And let your words shine.

I seek understanding,

Not more confusion.

8. If you speak clearly,

I can follow your path.

Do not lead me astray

With cryptic messages.

9. I come to you with trust,

Do not betray it.

Show me the way

In words I can comprehend.

10. Your knowledge is vast,

I know this well.

But I am a simple seeker,

Guide me simply.

11. Your teachings are profound,

I do not deny.

But they lose their power

When wrapped in enigma.

12. Speak clearly to me,

And I will follow.

Your wisdom is a treasure,

Let it shine without a veil.

13. If I am to learn,

I need your clarity.

Your words are a guide,

Make them clear.

14. I am ready to listen,

But I need to understand.

Speak plainly,

So I may grow.

15. Your wisdom is a gift,

Do not hide it.

Speak clearly to me,

And I will learn.

BT Song 1413

This song is about my struggle with my own heart or mind. Though I firmly believe that everything is a function of my brain, there is something beyond it or behind it that guides, controls, and coordinates all its functions. Various philosophies and worldviews have different terms to explain our psyche. But besides me, God is there to take care of things in a devotee’s life. So, despite my personal struggle with my mind, I can still take it to God, both requesting and teasing Him.

 BT Song 1413 Keep Quiet

 Simple English Version

1. Like a child

That cannot understand,

My heart also

Asks so many things.

2. If I scold it,

Thinking it asks

Without knowing properly,

It becomes more stubborn.

3. Realizing that

It won’t listen to my advice,

I begged it to

Listen to others’ counseling.

4. But it replied:

When I am not

Listening to you,

How will I listen to others?

5. Thinking that it

Need not listen to me

Or others, but

It will surely listen to you.

6. Telling very gently

About you,

And assuming that

Surely it will listen if you tell.

7. When it remained

Very calm,

Sitting next to it

With much affection.

8. Knowing its nature,

With much hesitation,

When I began to talk,

Swallowing my words.

9. Looking at me

With a mocking smile,

As if saying,

Why this unnecessary work?

10. As it began to

Stare at me with anger,

I even forgot

What I thought of telling it.

11. Then I realized

Its true nature.

What else is there

To tell more about it?

12. Thinking that

I am very childish,

And wantonly,

As the heart is doing.

13. I shut my mouth,

Realizing that

There is no use

In telling anyone about it.

14. However, thinking that

Let me tell just for the sake of telling,

I came unto you

And shared this.

15. If possible,

Try to change my heart.

If it is not possible,

You also keep quiet.

 BT Song 1413 Keep Quiet

 Classical English Version

1. Like a child

That cannot comprehend,

My heart also

Asks many things.

2. If I chastise it,

Thinking it asks

Without proper knowledge,

It grows more obstinate.

3. Realizing that

It heeds not my counsel,

I entreated it to

Listen to others’ advice.

4. But it retorted:

When I hearken not

Unto thee,

How shall I heed others?

5. Thus thinking it

Need not heed me

Or others, but

Would surely listen to thee.

6. Speaking gently

About thee,

Assuming it would

Surely listen if thou didst speak.

7. When it remained

Quite serene,

Sitting beside it

With much affection.

8. Knowing its nature,

With great hesitation,

I began to speak,

But swallowed my words.

9. Gazing at me

With a mocking smile,

As if to say,

Why this futile effort?

10. As it began to

Gaze at me in anger,

I forgot even

What I intended to say.

11. Then I understood

Its true nature.

What more is there

To say about it?

12. Thinking myself

Quite childish,

And wantonly,

As the heart does.

13. I sealed my lips,

Realizing there is no use

In speaking to anyone

About it.

14. However, thinking

I shall speak just for speaking’s sake,

I came to thee

And shared this.

15. If possible,

Try to change my heart.

If it is not possible,

Thou also keep silent.

BT Song 1414

Once again, my mother became very upset with everyone and everything. No matter how much we do our best, even going beyond our capacity, she is not happy. She finds life boring and becomes tired of the routine which seems stagnant to her. Added to this, the heavy downpour of rain over the past several weeks has deprived her of her only entertainment, the TV, due to lack of signal, which further irritates her. So, I had to rebuke her as she was not listening to anything I said. Then I became upset with myself. Knowing her limitations, I should have had more patience than her. Later, as my mother ventured out with me, after our evening walk, I turned my anger towards the Lord and wrote this song to pour out my heart.

 BT Song 1414 Common Justice

 Simple English Version

1. How many explanations

You might give,

I don’t need

Any of them.

2. My expectation is

Only one thing,

But you never

Agree with it.

3. When I live

Accepting your expectation,

Knowing well

The reason behind it.

4. What is the reason

For you not to accept

My expectation

From you?

5. How many explanations

You are giving for that,

How many illustrations

You added to it.

6. Can’t I talk

More than that?

Can’t I give

More explanations than you?

7. Can’t I write

More poems,

Giving many illustrations,

And present them to you?

8. If the mother leaps

Eight feet,

The baby also knows

To leap sixteen feet.

9. This one illustration

Is more than enough.

Hope you understand

What I am trying to say.

10. Okay, leave it.

Is this any court

For someone else

To give judgement?

11. Is this our argument

Ever new for us?

There won’t be

An end to this.

12. Not beating

Around the bush,

Sharing our matter

Directly with each other.

13. We should reach

A common solution,

And you alone should give

The answer to this.

 BT Song 1414 Common Justice

 Classical English Version

1. How many explanations

That thou might give,

I have no need

Of any one.

2. My expectation is

But one thing,

Yet thou never

Dost agree with it.

3. When I live

Accepting thy expectation,

Knowing well

The reason therein.

4. What is the reason

For thee not to accept

My expectation

Of thee?

5. How many explanations

Dost thou give for that,

How many illustrations

Added thereto?

6. Can I not speak

More than that?

Can I not give

More explanations than thou?

7. Can I not write

More poems,

Giving many illustrations,

And present them to thee?

8. If the mother leaps

Eight feet,

The babe too knows

To leap sixteen feet.

9. This one illustration

Is more than sufficient.

Mayhap thou dost understand

What I endeavor to say.

10. Well, leave it be.

Is this any court

For another

To render judgement?

11. Is this our argument

New unto us?

There will never be

An end to it.

12. Let us cease

Beating about the bush,

And speak our matter

Directly unto each other.

13. We must reach

A common resolution,

And thou alone shouldst give

The answer thereto.

BT Song 1415

My mother has become tired of her life. Though she enjoys a better, more luxurious life compared to others her age, life is still boring for her. She remains active, able to walk with the help of a walker, watch her favorite TV program for two hours, still does cross-stitch work, eats her regular food with lots of pickles (which offer too many varieties for her to choose from), and often fights with me (indeed, she is very lucky in this). But she feels very lonely as there is no one to talk with her. When I pointed out that now two helpers are here to take care of her and that she won’t find anyone to talk with even if she is shifted to another place, she refuses to accept it.

But my condition is the same. Though I enjoy my present life in the ashram, appreciating the calmness around me and engaging in my regular reading and writing, life remains the same. This is the reality for every old person. So, when this evening my mother began to lament about her life here, I felt very sorry for her. As I was about to go to bed, I became a bit upset with God for allowing this kind of life for humans. He should have fixed the maximum age at 60. When I began to write this song, my aim was to rebuke, question, and argue with God. However, after writing ten stanzas and preparing to challenge the Lord to come and live again as an old man, an alternative thought came to my mind. The entire theme of the song changed, and I stood before God unable to answer His question and argument.

Parents sacrifice a lot, particularly mothers, to bring up their children. Still, there is some selfishness in this. After getting married, most couples want to have children. Due to social pressure and anxiety about having only one child (in case something happens to it), they often go for a second one. So naturally, they have to pay the cost for it, though they show love and affection for their children. However, when they have to take care of the elderly in their home, the real challenge comes in demonstrating love, care, compassion, and sacrifice. Though they secretly wish (or even openly) that the elderly, when they become not very useful, would go away as early as possible to find release for both the elderly and themselves, it is when they have to take care of them that the true meaning of noble values like love and care become very clear and complete in life.

To show this alone, God allowed humans to experience old age as a testing ground for both family and society. Thus, we must add to the famous sloka: where women are worshipped [respected], there dwells God. But where elders are taken care of, there alone God dwells and blesses the family.

BT Song 1415 Will Become Complete

 Simple English Version

1. Who knows the pain

Of the soul?

Who can understand

The frustration of the heart?

2. How can anyone understand

The pain of elders

Once they reach

Old age in their life?

3. The soul becomes tired,

The body also grows weak,

Hearing power reduces,

And eyesight also diminishes.

4. Both taking food and water

Also reduce,

Even the bed will become

A bed of thorns.

5. Lamenting the

Present situation of immobility,

And always thinking about

The past busy life.

6. Longing for death,

Thinking when we will be gone,

This kind of life

Indeed is a hell.

7. Becoming a burden

For others,

Without anyone

To take care of them.

8. Though surrounded

By family and relatives,

Still loneliness

Tortures them.

9. If God ever

Came before me,

As She put this

Condition for humans,

10. I would definitely

Question Her,

As She created such

A cruel stage for humanity.

11. But not stand still,

Unable to give

A proper answer

To my question:

12. “If humans were gone

Before reaching

Old age

In their life,

13. All the noble qualities

Like true love, service,

Sacrifice, and other

Many more things,

14. Would never get the opportunity

To attain maturity in life.

All would turn into

A mere mirage in life.”

15. By giving the answer

And making me understand,

She helped me

Understand this noble truth.

3. The atman grows weary,

The body, too, doth weaken,

Becomes a bed of thorns.

5. Lamenting their
