BT Song 1451
A bhakta once asked me: “Is there anything you can share about the Good News?”
Though I gave my usual answer, for me, the Good News is about restoring the last relationship I lost. Sin, salvation, and redemption are, of course, part of the Good News. However, for a bhakta, it is more than these theological terms; it is about celebrating the eternal relationship with God. In Indian bhakti tradition, there are countless stories of saints who proclaimed they were found by God, even though they never sought Him. The story of Sundarar is one of them. His story is called ‘Thaduttatkonda Puranam,’ which means ‘Over Lording by Voluntarily Interfering.’ Sundarar recounts this incident in many songs, but space won’t allow me to quote them here.
BT Song 1451 Relationship That Never Knew Separation
Simple English Version:
1
Many found it by searching,
Many got it by seeking,
Others received by asking,
But I’m an exception to this.
2
I was searching too,
But I was not searching for you.
Though I tried many ways to get it,
I never had the chance to seek you.
3
I asked many to receive it,
But I never asked you to give it.
Yet I received you,
This still confuses me.
4
Should I call this your mercy,
Or think of it as your compassion,
Or name it as your grace,
For you came to me willingly?
5
No matter what term I use,
There is one thing beyond all this:
Though I lost the relationship in between,
It has been there since creation.
6
As you have redeemed
What belongs to you,
There are not enough words
To explain it further.
7
Rejoicing in that relationship,
I will continue to live with you,
For nothing can separate me
From this bond we share.

BT Song 1451 Relationship That Never Knew Separation
Classical English Version:
1
Many found it through their searching,
Many gained it through their seeking,
Others received it by asking,
Yet I am an exception to this.
2
Indeed, I too was in search,
But never was I searching for thee.
Though I pursued many paths to find it,
Ne’er came the chance to seek thee.
3
I petitioned many to receive it,
But never did I ask thee to bestow it.
Yet thou camest unto me,
And this remains a mystery.
4
Should I deem this thy mercy,
Or regard it as thy compassion,
Or proclaim it as thy grace,
For thou didst come to me unbidden?
5
Whatever term I might employ,
There is one truth surpassing all:
Though the bond was lost midway,
It has endured since creation’s dawn.
6
As thou hast reclaimed
That which is thine own,
Words fail to express
Its profound nature.
7
Rejoicing in that bond,
I shall dwell with thee,
For naught can sever
This eternal relationship.

BT Song 1452
As I continue to struggle both day and night to take care of my mother, who is almost bedridden, our ashram helper also couldn’t help me much. I asked her not to come at night with her husband to help me as she is unwell. Though her husband came and stayed, he cannot help during the night as he had a busy day. All the efforts my sister took to keep our mother with her are also not materializing. Not knowing what to do and unable to handle the situation on my own due to my health and age, the only alternative I have left is to plead with God to take some quick decision on what to do next.
BT Song 1452 Why This Indifference
Simple English Version:
1
Now we could reach
A conclusion,
Why should things
Slip from our hands?
2
Though you have
Sovereign rights,
You also should
Listen to me.
3
Did you create us
For you to remain alone?
Did you create the world
For you to act alone?
4
When we have an
Unbreakable bond,
Why did you allow
Any space for separation?
5
You must create
Another separate world,
For you to think and
Act on your own.
6
If you stay with me
In this world,
You should make decisions
After listening to me.
7
I won’t interfere
In any common tasks
That you perform
For everyone.
8
But when it comes
To my own rights,
I won’t let it go
So easily.
9
You alone gave
This right to me,
If you deny it now,
I won’t agree with you.
10
When it comes
To my rights,
I won’t listen
Even to your words.
11
As you know well
About my stubbornness,
You should
Bend a little.
12
When I cry
With much stubbornness,
Like a mother,
You should change.
13
Concessions are
A mother’s nature,
And you have
Plenty of that.
14
Then why this
Indifference now?
Turn back to
This crying child.
15
If you continue
To remain indifferent,
My stubbornness will continue,
This alone I say.
Gurukulam, 30-11-2022, 3.00 am.
BT Song 1452 Why This Indifference
Classical English Version:
1
Now we might reach
A conclusion true,
Why should things
Slip from our grasp?
2
Though thou hast
Sovereign rights,
Thou shouldst also
Hearken to me.
3
Didst thou create us
For thee to dwell alone?
Didst thou create the world
For thine own solitary acts?
4
When we share an
Unbreakable bond,
Why didst thou allow
Any space for parting?
5
Thou must create
Another world apart,
For thee to think
And act in solitude.
6
If thou must stay
With me in this realm,
Thou shouldst decide
After hearing me.
7
I shall not interfere
In tasks communal,
Which thou dost perform
For all mankind.
8
But when it comes
To my own rights,
I shall not yield
So readily.
9
Thou alone didst grant
This right to me,
If thou dost now deny,
I shall not consent.
10
When it pertains
To mine own rights,
I shall not heed
Even thine own words.
11
As thou dost know well
My stubborn nature,
Thou shouldst
Bend a little.
12
When I weep
With adamant cry,
Like a mother,
Thou shouldst change.
13
Concessions are
A mother’s way,
And thou hast
Much of that nature.
14
Then why this
Cold indifference?
Turn back to
This weeping child.
15
If thou dost remain
Indifferent still,
My stubbornness shall persist,
This alone I say.
Gurukulam, 30-11-2022, 3.00 am.
BT Song 1453
As my mother’s condition slowly deteriorates, I have to look after her more than before, resulting in almost no sleep the entire night. This also affects my health significantly. Though my sister tries her best to move our mother to Chennai, there is still no house available near her to rent until the end of February. Each day becomes a struggle for me to survive. However, the only thing I know for sure is to pour out my heart to the Lord, knowing He is there to take care of me despite the situation. I still remember something I read long ago. A saint, unsure of his bhakti and mukti, went to God and said, “I am not sure about my bhakti and mukti. Ensure that I attain both.” In response, God said, “What would you do if you knew for sure? Do that alone now.”
BT Song 1453 Know One Thing to Do
Simple English Version:
1
I don’t know what to do,
Somehow I can’t understand.
Whatever happens,
I’m not to blame.
2
I didn’t say this
To shirk my duty.
I’ve never refused
The tasks you gave.
3
But when things
Go out of control,
Surely, I can’t be held
Responsible for that.
4
I know my limits,
I know my nature,
So I say this
Clearly to you.
5
I’ve never refused
When you gave me burdens,
I’ve never tried to escape
The responsibilities given.
6
Did you understand
What I’m trying to say?
But I can’t grasp
Anything properly.
7
Something is
Troubling me,
But I don’t know
What it is.
8
But don’t think
This is just
One of my
Daily complaints.
9
My life never goes by
Without lamenting,
Not even for
A single day.
10
Even though
The fault is mine,
I have no more
Strength to bear it.
11
If you can’t understand
After all I’ve said,
I don’t know
How else to explain.
12
But I know
One thing for sure,
There’s one thing
I must do again.
13
What I’ll do
If I understand clearly,
I must do
That alone now.
14
When you’re there
To protect me,
Nothing will go
Out of control.
15
The promise you gave,
That you’d take care,
Will remain
Steadfast always.
Gurukulam, 1-1-2022, 1.30 a.m.
BT Song 1453 Know One Thing to Do
Classical English Version:
1
I know not what to do,
Nor can I fathom it.
Whate’er befalls,
I bear no blame.
2
I uttered not these words
To shirk responsibility.
Ne’er have I refused
To fulfill your charge.
3
But when matters
Exceed my control,
Surely, I cannot
Bear the blame for that.
4
I know my bounds,
I know my nature,
Thus, I speak
Plainly to thee.
5
Ne’er have I declined
When thou gavest burdens,
Nor sought to flee
The duties given.
6
Hast thou understood
What I strive to convey?
Yet, I fail to grasp
Anything with clarity.
7
Something within
Troubles me,
But I know not
What it is.
8
Think not, though,
This is merely
Another of my
Daily complaints.
9
My life passes not
Without lament,
Not even for
A single day.
10
Though the fault be mine,
I lack the strength
To bear it further,
No more can I endure.
11
If thou canst not understand
After all I’ve said,
I know not
How else to express.
12
Yet, I know
One thing for certain,
This alone
I must do again.
13
What I shall do,
If I understand clearly,
That alone
Must be done now.
14
When thou art there
To shield me,
Naught will pass
Beyond control.
15
The vow thou gavest,
To tend to me,
Shall remain
Steadfast always.

BT Song 1454
For a change, I imagined placing God in my position in Viraha-bhakti, as this too is part of the theme of love in separation.
BT Song 1454 Spellbound
Simple English Version:
1
Though I came to talk,
I remain silent.
I completely forgot
What I wanted to ask you.
2
As you became
Very sad,
Knowing the reason,
I kept quiet.
3
When we are
Always together,
I forget what
You have given me.
4
Forgetting you,
By wandering much in this world,
I failed to remember
That you would feel sad about it.
5
Forgetting the words
I gave to you,
That I would return
Quickly back to you.
6
I treated you
As if you were my servant,
Here to do
All my errands.
7
Though I know well
That separation is painful,
I completely forgot
That it affects us both.
8
Forgetting that pain,
And upset with you,
How many times
Did I rebuke you?
9
When I was wandering
With selfishness,
Your face appeared
And disappeared immediately.
10
I ran back to you
Very quickly,
Feeling sorry
For my behavior.
11
But I stood silently
Before you,
Unable to see you
Face to face.
12
As you were troubled
Without me,
Not knowing
How to ask about it.
13
As both fear and shyness
Caught hold of me,
I stood before you,
Silently, not saying anything.
14
As you forgave me
As you always do,
I bowed at your feet,
Pleading for your grace.
Gurukulam, 1-12-2022, 2.30 a.m.
BT Song 1454 Spellbound
Classical English Version:
1
Though I came to speak,
I held my peace.
I wholly forgot
What I wished to ask thee.
2
As thou becamest
Sorely saddened,
Knowing the cause,
I held my silence.
3
When we dwell
Always together,
I forget what
Thou hast bestowed upon me.
4
Forgetting thee,
By wandering much in this world,
I failed to recall
That thou wouldst grieve for it.
5
Forgetting the words
I spake to thee,
That I would return
Swiftly back to thee.
6
I treated thee
As if thou wert my servant,
Here to perform
All my errands.
7
Though I know well
That separation is grievous,
I wholly forgot
That it is mutual to us both.
8
Forgetting that pain,
And in anger with thee,
How oft
Did I rebuke thee?
9
When I was wandering
In selfishness,
Thy face appeared
And vanished instantly.
10
I hastened back to thee,
With utmost speed,
Repenting of
My behavior.
11
But I stood in silence
Before thee,
Unable to meet
Thine eyes.
12
As thou wert troubled
Without me,
Not knowing
How to inquire of it.
13
As both fear and shame
Seized me,
I stood before thee,
Silent, not uttering a word.
14
As thou forgavest me,
As ever thou dost,
I bowed at thy feet,
Entreating thy grace.

BT Song 1455
I am reading the book Vedantic Approaches to God [Macmillan Press Ltd, London, 1980] by Eric Lott. He has done remarkable research on this subject. One term he often uses to explain both the transcendence and immanence of God is ‘transcendental immanence,’ which is the best word to understand the nature of God. However, for me, thinking and worshipping a God beyond our understanding and experience is difficult to comprehend. Even with His transcendent nature, He still limits Himself to have a relationship with us.
For me, salvation is not merely about sin and forgiveness or redemption and regeneration. It is about restoring the lost relationship between the atman and Brahman. The nature of this relationship leads to various philosophies in India, such as Advaita, Vishishtadvaita, and Dvaita. Each philosophy has its own approach to this subject. In Muktiveda, since we are created in God’s image, through mukti, we experience His presence all the time, yet we do not share in His essence. The exact nature of the Image of God in us is not clearly explained by any theology, and only a bhakta can experience this through their relationship with God.
This another relevant topic in bhakti tradition is that, though God is sovereign and independent to do anything He likes, when it comes to His relationship with His bhaktas, He too needs them to enjoy that relationship. This is a controversial subject, and many theologians in India have their own views about it. However, Ramanuja’s commentary on the relationship between the atman and Brahman is very important for understanding this. Though a bit long, it is worth reading the following extract from the book by Eric Lott:
First we may note the positive ways in which Ramanuja interpreted identity texts such as ‘That thou art’, drawing on the exposition in his systematic summary of Vedanta, Vedartha-Samgraha. In Brahman’s case the two terms ‘That’ and ‘thou’ can be brought into a relation of ‘appositional identity’ primarily because ‘Brahman is the Self of the embodied individual self’, and therefore can be given ‘the same name as that individual soul.’[Ramanuja’s Vedaartha-Sangraha, (Van Buitenen, J.A.B, ed. With intro. And annotated trans. Poona, 1965) paras. 19-20; cf. also Sri-Bhasya {on Brahma-Sutras} (Sampatkumaran, M.R., The Gita-Bhasya of Ramanuja, a trans., Madras, 1969. 1.1.1.] The term taad–aatmay, often used in Vedantic discussion to indicate the oneness of Brahman and other beings, means literally ‘whose self is that (tat)’, which is exactly how Ramanuja interprets their oneness, while denying any absolute identity’. (p.47)
… ‘Because of their intense love for me, they find that it is impossible to support their souls for even an infinitestimal part of a second without singing my praise, striving for me, and worshipping me.’ And the dependence can never be reciprocal, even though there will be some mutuality about the soul’s relations to its body. ‘My existence is not under their control…. I am the supporter of all beings; they can be of no help to me at any time.’.{Sri-Bhasya {on Brahma-Sutras} (Sampatkumaran, M.R., The Gita-Bhasya of Ramanuja, a trans., Madras, 1969 9.4-5, 14}
And yet, following the Gita’s own suggestion, Ramanuja describes a remarkable change in the Lord’s attitude towards his dependants, when their devotion is so intense that they feel ‘unable to sustain their souls without worshipping me, and when this worship is their sole aim’. For in such cases, even the Support feels that ‘without him [that devoted soul], I cannot sustain my soul’; ‘I treat them as if they were my superiors’.{cf. Gita-Bhasya, 7.18; 9.29} Clearly this is not an ontological statement on Ramanuja’s part, though it does have considerable theological significance.—p. 52
BT Song 1455 Limited Yourself
Simple English Version:
1
Without having any attributes,
Without any name or form,
When you remain
Invisible to us,
2
Why do you need
The word “God” for yourself?
This has now become
A question for me.
3
If you are called “God,”
And you remain beyond,
I don’t know
What you have transcended.
4
We have
Limitations for sure,
But where is there any limit
For you to transcend?
5
If we must
Understand this way,
Why are so many
Scriptures and philosophies needed?
6
If you stand beyond
Our senses and mind,
Then how can we seek you
Only through them?
7
Even if we reach
That stage,
How will we communicate
Once we come back?
8
Fortunately, when
I was seeking you,
Not beyond my reach,
You came quickly to me.
9
Mingling with my senses,
Fellowshipping with me,
You even helped my
Mind to understand you.
10
What many
Scriptures try to convey,
You conveyed
So I could understand.
11
You solved
All the riddles
That remained
Hidden in all Scriptures.
12
With the nature of God
And the name “Mother,”
You taught me
In the language of a child.
13
When you came to have fellowship with me,
In whichever way I sought you,
Taking that form,
You came to me.
14
When I sought you
In my soul, transcending all forms,
You filled me
Without any form.
15
So, when I call you,
Who have no
Name, form, or attribute,
You came immediately.
16
Though you remain
Transcending everything,
You limited yourself
To reveal yourself within my limits.
Gurukulam, 1-12-2022, 3.00 am
BT Song 1455 Limited Yourself
Classical English Version:
1
Without possessing any attributes,
Without name or form,
When thou dost remain
Invisible unto us,
2
Why dost thou need
The term “God” for thyself?
This hath now become
A query before me.
3
If thou art termed “God,”
And dost remain transcendent,
I know not
What thou hast transcended.
4
We are bound
By limitations assuredly,
But where is there any limit
For thee to transcend?
5
If this must be
The sole manner of understanding,
Why then require so many
Scriptures and philosophies?
6
If thou standest beyond
Our senses and intellect,
How shall we seek thee
Only through these means?
7
Even if we attain
That exalted stage,
How shall we communicate
When we return from thence?
8
Fortuitously, whilst
I sought thee,
Not beyond my reach,
Thou camest swiftly unto me.
9
Mingling with my senses,
Fellowshipping with me,
Thou didst even aid my
Intellect to comprehend thee.
10
What many
Scriptures endeavor to convey,
Thou didst convey
For my understanding.
11
Thou didst unravel
All the mysteries
That remained
Veiled in the Scriptures.
12
Bearing the nature of God
And named “Mother,”
Thou didst instruct me
In the language of a child.
13
When thou camest to share fellowship,
In whatever form I sought thee,
Taking that shape,
Thou didst appear unto me.
14
When I sought thee
In my soul, surpassing all forms,
Thou didst fill me
Without form.
15
Thus, when I call thee,
Who art without
Name, form, or attribute,
Thou didst come without delay.
16
Though thou dost remain
Transcending all things,
Thou didst limit thyself
To manifest within my confines.

BT Song 1451 பிரியா உறவு
1
