BT Song 1471
I came to participate in the rest of the rituals that my brother had to perform for our mother after her cremation. He arranged for me to stay in the very same room where she had stayed. I also stayed in the same room with her to take care of her when he went out. As I lay on the very same cot where she used to sleep, recalling her life which she never liked, I began to cry. Thankfully, she did not need to stay here for long periods and often came to stay with me, eventually moving to live with me permanently. Unable to control my tears as I recalled her life here and our relationship, I wrote this song seeking the comfort of God, which I desperately need now.
BT Song 1471 will be comforted
Simple English
Stanza 1:
When I cannot find
Comfort even after crying,
Who will comfort me?
Tell me who it will be.
Stanza 2:
It’s a waste of time
Seeking comfort from people,
As they have
Their own struggles.
Stanza 3:
If I pour out my heart,
The burden will lessen.
And if I cry,
I might find some comfort.
Stanza 4:
Though this is true in life,
I didn’t receive either.
What is the reason
For this?
Stanza 5:
If I share with others,
It will become gossip.
And the burden of my heart
Will increase.
Stanza 6:
If you refuse to comfort me,
How will my heart
Be comforted
Even after crying a lot?
Stanza 7:
Though time
Might change everything,
Your grace alone
Is the remedy for me.
Stanza 8:
When I cry and think
About the relationship,
I will thank you
For giving this wonderful relationship.
Stanza 9:
Thinking only of your grace
In that relationship,
I want to praise you
Every day in life.
Stanza 10:
Though living and separation,
Life and death,
Are the laws
Of nature.
Stanza 11:
As you alone
Created this law,
I have to live
Accepting it.
Stanza 12:
Still, when my
Heart is crying,
Your hands should
Hug me immediately.
Stanza 13:
And thinking of the
Comfort I receive from it,
My heart will
Be comforted.

BT Song 1471 will be comforted
Classical English
Stanza 1:
When comfort I cannot find
Though tears do flow,
Who shall me console?
Tell me, I pray thee.
Stanza 2:
‘Tis but folly
To seek solace from man,
For they too
Have their tribulations.
Stanza 3:
If I my heart unburden,
Lighter shall it be.
And if I weep,
Comfort may be found.
Stanza 4:
Though this be true in life,
Yet neither did I receive.
What cause
Hath this?
Stanza 5:
If with others I share,
‘Twill turn to gossip.
And the burden
Of my heart shall increase.
Stanza 6:
If thou refuseth comfort,
How shall my heart
Be comforted,
Though I cry much?
Stanza 7:
Though time
May alter all things,
Thy grace alone
Is the cure for me.
Stanza 8:
When I cry and ponder
Upon the bond,
I shall thank thee
For this wondrous relation.
Stanza 9:
Thinking solely of thy grace
In that bond,
I would sing thy praises
Each day of my life.
Stanza 10:
Though life and parting,
Life and death,
Be the law
Of nature.
Stanza 11:
As thou alone
Didst create this law,
I must live
Accepting it.
Stanza 12:
Yet when my
Heart doth cry,
Thy hands should
Embrace me forthwith.
Stanza 13:
And pondering the comfort
Thus received,
My heart shall
Be comforted.

BT Song 1472
These are pictures of my mother’s cremation, collecting her bones, performing the final rites, and immersing the offerings in the River Kavery at Kumbakonam. We are not supposed to take any pictures of such funeral rituals, but I did.
I came to Kumbakonam where my brother was performing the rest of the 13-day final rituals for our mother. Yesterday was known as ‘Pattu.’ On the 10th day, we children and relatives had to give her the final food on this earth, serving various dishes that she liked the most. After serving all the food on a cloth, when we had to go around and do the namaskaram to my mother, I began to cry loudly in front of everyone, unable to control myself. Though my brother tried to stop me, the main priest said, ‘Allow him to cry. This is the time you all should cry for your mother, thinking of all she has done for you in this life. Unless you cry genuinely, that atman won’t depart peacefully from this earth. I know how he took care of your mother, and she will be pleased to see that at least one person is genuinely grieving for her.’
After the ritual and bath, we all returned to the room. I was given the very same room where my mother lived for a few months with my brother back in 2012. As I became very tired, I slept after 8:30. When I woke up around 1:00 am, unable to sleep, I sat on the very same cot on which my mother slept. I too stayed in the same room with her to take care of her, sleeping on the floor. When most of the other distant relatives had left after today’s main event, I recalled Pattinattar’s songs (see song 1465, lamenting for his mother) and wrote this song with many tears.
BT Song 1472 Seeing in you
Simple English
Stanza 1:
The mother who
Fed us with milk,
Showing love
And adding affection.
Stanza 2:
I turned her to ash
By burning in the fire,
And immersed
In the water.
Stanza 3:
After completing
The ten days of rituals,
And following all
The ritual codes carefully.
Stanza 4:
As I remain
Alone, since all
Other relatives
Have left after the rituals.
Stanza 5:
Keeping her
In my memory,
Thinking about her love,
I will live each day.
Stanza 6:
Once I cry,
Shedding tears,
The heavy heart
Becomes lighter.
Stanza 7:
Memories will
Keep coming
Like waves,
Unable to forget her.
Stanza 8:
As you stay with me,
Showing
Mother’s affection
In such times.
Stanza 9:
Seeing her
In you,
Living in you,
And completing it.
Stanza 10:
I will live with you,
Having an
Eternal relationship,
Never knowing separation.

BT Song 1473
As I stayed in the very same room where my mother stayed for a few months in the past, sleeping on the same cot, I often recalled my life with her and now without her. No amount of words can convey my feelings properly. But the only consolation I have is that my relationship with her still continues, though her body is gone, and the Lord is there to comfort me.
BT Song 1473 Live in the relationship
Simple English
Stanza 1:
I came to you
To share my burden,
For it will lighten
Once I share it.
Stanza 2:
Knowing my heart
Well in advance,
You came too
Before I called you.
Stanza 3:
When I stay
Silent,
Struggling to find
Words to convey.
Stanza 4:
You understood
My thoughts
In the tears
That flowed from my eyes.
Stanza 5:
Without giving
Any kind of response,
You came and sat
Next to me.
Stanza 6:
Wiping the tears
With your fingers,
You pulled me
Onto your lap.
Stanza 7:
When I leaned
On your lap,
It gave more comfort
Than that of a mother.
Stanza 8:
Gently brushing
My hair,
You stayed silent too,
Patting my back.
Stanza 9:
Many losses
May come in life,
But none equal
To that of a mother.
Stanza 10:
But there is no
Greater love than yours,
Which you show
More than a mother.
Stanza 11:
I will receive back
Double what I lost,
And live in that relationship
Which will never be lost.

BT Song 1474
After completing the 14th-day ritual for my mother, I came to Swami Malai with my second sister and her husband to their friend’s house. Both my sister and her husband went out for some work, but I went for a walk on the open terrace. Now I have to return to the ashram to continue living my life without my mother. That very thought made me cry for her. Then, thinking of her again, I wrote this song pouring my heart out.
I recalled several attempts I made in the past to send her away from the ashram so she could have a normal life with others in society, with relatives and companions. But again and again, she refused to leave me alone. She often said, ‘If I go, who will take care of you? Of course, I cannot take care of you as I used to in the past. But by staying with you, at least I can keep an eye on you.’ In the same way, on December 26th, when my sister requested me to give some milk to my mother, I gave her three spoons of milk which she managed to take. But immediately after that, her life left her body, and my sister told me: ‘From the afternoon, her pulse was fluctuating. But you were resting after you took care of amma the whole night. But she was holding her breath only to receive milk from your hand. As she received it, her breath left her.’
Recalling both her love and care for me, and the way her breath left after I gave the milk, will ever remain green in my memory as long as I live. Finding some comfort in these memories, I have to complete my race on this earth. This is a very cruel but unavoidable part of life.
BT Song 1474 Cruel indeed
Simple English
Stanza 1:
You gave me
An opportunity
To serve you,
To do seva for you.
Stanza 2:
Though I tried
Many times
To send you away
To others to stay.
Stanza 3:
Not wanting
To leave me alone,
Till the end
You stayed with me.
Stanza 4:
Thinking that
Without you,
My life wouldn’t be complete,
You stayed with me.
Stanza 5:
But giving me
A purposeless life,
You have
Left me alone.
Stanza 6:
Finally accepting
Milk from my hand,
You gave up
Your dear life.
Stanza 7:
The rest of my life
Will remain empty,
With no one
To fill your place.
Stanza 8:
Even God cannot
Replace a mother;
This indeed
Is a great truth.
Stanza 9:
Still, I have
To live;
That alone
Has become cruel indeed.
Stanza 10:
But remembering you
Each day and
Completing this
Earthly life.
Stanza 11:
Serving others
And remembering your love
Each day in my life.
Stanza 12:
I will complete my
Race on this earth,
Finally giving up my life,
Only remembering you.

BT Song 1475
‘All that is collected should be scattered; all that stands tall will fall one day; all that comes together will be separated; and all that is born will die one day,’ says the famous sloka (from the Mahabharata, I think). Everyone knows this fact, and I am no exception to this common rule. At the same time, each person has to handle loss in their own way. Particularly when one misses someone dear, the loss is beyond comprehension, though one is aware of the law of nature. Specifically, the relationship between a mother and child is unique. It is the kind of special relationship each devotee has with their chosen deity. The same is the case with me. As I slowly come to terms with the fact that my mother is no longer with me physically, it will take a long time for me to accept this fact mentally. The only way for me to handle it is to mourn and pour out my heart by writing poems like this. Of course, others who read this might get irritated. But I have to live my life, despite my vocation. So this evening, after an evening walk, when I returned to the room, I wrote this song in my mother’s voice, which was still ringing in my ears.
BT Song 1475 Comfort yourself
Simple English
Stanza 1:
You are crying for me,
That is enough for me.
There is nothing
I can do for you.
Stanza 2:
You were born as my child
And grew up as my son.
In my old age,
You became my mother.
Stanza 3:
I don’t have
The opportunity to
Come and be born again
As your child.
Stanza 4:
But I will live
In your heart.
There, I will live
As your child.
Stanza 5:
Only the body
Has gone,
And the relationship
Still continues.
Stanza 6:
You have lived
For me enough so far.
From now on,
You have to live for yourself.
Stanza 7:
I will continue
To watch you from somewhere.
If there is any need,
I will come immediately.
Stanza 8:
Don’t lament,
Thinking that
From where and how
I will look after you.
Stanza 9:
I will remain in others’ bodies.
In their needs,
I will come and
Seek your help.
Stanza 10:
In this land
Where one laments even for drying crops,@
I will dwell among
Those who seek help.
Stanza 11:
Fulfill your duty
By doing
Whatever seva
You can do for others.
Stanza 12:
Continue to cry
As long as there is need for that.
Then you
Comfort yourself.
Stanza 13:
Though the relationship between
Mother and child
Is common
Everywhere.
Stanza 14:
Our relationship
Will remain unique,
And only we
Know about it.
Stanza 15:
I don’t have
Anything more to tell.
I don’t have enough
Words to comfort you.
