BT Song 1476
The main deity at Trichy Rock Fort Temple, where I was born and where my parents lived for a long time after their marriage, is known as ‘Thayum Aanavan’—one who became a mother. This is the story: when a woman was in labor, her mother, who lived on the other side of the river Kaveri, couldn’t reach in time to help her daughter. Standing on the other side of the overflowing river, she prayed. At the right moment, Siva took her form and went to her daughter’s house, helping her deliver the baby. When the mother arrived after the flood subsided and learned what had happened, she praised Siva, calling Him: Thayum Aanavan.

BT Song 1476 – She Stands as the Symbol
Though this was
the expected thing,
How will my heart
bear the loss?
She bore us
with much pain,
She raised us
so we wouldn’t feel pain.
She carried
so many burdens for us,
She went through
so much pain for us.
She alone
disciplined us by punishing,
She alone
cared for us with compassion.
She alone spoiled us
by pampering too much,
But at the same time,
she never forgot to discipline us.
How to count them?
Are they one or two?
With whom can we compare
a mother on this earth?
Just for the sake of name,
though we mention others,
Our heart knows
which one is true.
When even God
fails before a mother,
What to say about
the struggling human?
It’s an unnecessary
debate to decide
who is greater:
Mother or God.
Though God dwells
everywhere,
He shows Himself
only in a mother.
Having the name
‘One who became a mother,’
He lives among us
and continues to guide us.
Though her body
is gone,
He still shows
Mother as the symbol of love.
How will our hearts
accept her loss,
who had
so many virtues?
But He alone gives
grace to encourage us,
and in her memory,
He will comfort us.
Swamimalai, 8-1-2023 (9-1-2023), 12.10 am.
BT Song 1476 – She Stands as the Symbol (Classical English)
Though this was
An expected fate,
How shall my heart
Bear the loss?
She brought us forth
With much labor’s pain,
She nurtured us
To spare us sorrow.
She bore
Many burdens for us,
She endured
Much suffering for us.
She alone
Corrected us through punishment,
She alone
Sustained us with compassion.
She alone indulged
By pampering us excessively,
Yet she never
Forgot to discipline us.
How shall we count
Such things, one or two?
Whom can we compare
To a mother on this earth?
Though we may mention
Others in mere names,
Our heart knows
Which is the true one.
When even God
Fails before a mother,
What can be said
Of struggling mankind?
It is a needless
Debate to determine
Who is greater:
Mother or God.
Though God dwells
Everywhere,
He reveals Himself
Only in a mother.
Bearing the name
‘Tayum Anavan’ [One who became a mother],
He resides among us
And continues to reign over us.
Though her
Body has departed,
He still reveals
Mother as the symbol of love.
How shall our heart
Accept her loss,
She who possessed
Such countless virtues?
Yet He alone grants grace
To comfort us,
And in her memory
He shall console us.
Swamimalai, 8-1-2023 (9-1-2023), 12.10 am.
BT Song 1477
After all the funeral rituals were completed, I returned to the ashram. As soon as I entered, especially the room where my mother lived and died, it was hard to accept and continue living without her. However, it is good that she has gone; otherwise, she would have suffered more in a bedridden condition. Though I could have done my best, it would still have been a challenge for both of us. So, I console myself that this was a loss for me, but she attained her ‘mukti’ from this earthly life. I don’t know where her atman has gone. With her body, my physical communication ended. But she will continue to live in her relationship with me forever as my AMMA. The Mahabharat glorifies a mother more than any other relative in our lives:
…maybe poor, he is still rich on entering his home, calling out to his mother.[Shanti-parva, 266.27]
But I am going to miss her physical presence and the opportunity to call her ‘amma’. However as I still have my relationship with her as son, I find solace in that:
…Able or disabled, lean or robust, the son is always protected by the mother…When his mother leaves him, then does the son become old, then does he become stricken with grief, then does he feel that this world has no interest for him (sunyam jagat). There is no shelter like the mother; there is no refuge like her; there is no defence better than her; there could be no one dearer than her (to the son) {Maha. Santi. 266, 29-31}….— Pandharinath H. Prabhu, Hindu Social Organization: A Study in Socio-Psychological and Indeological Foundations, Bombay, Popular Prakashan, [1940], Reprint 2004. p. 253
…The father’s affection had to be earned by implicit obedience, diligent work and a successful career, but a mother’s love and nurturing was unconditional and constant, regardless of the son’s response….— Mythily Sivaraman, Fragments of Life: a family memoir, New Delhi, Zubaan, an Imprint of Kali for Women, 2006, p. 22
Simple English Version
BT Song 1477 – You Live in Relationship
Though this is
a loss for me,
if this has given you
the freedom,
that’s enough for me.
What else do I need?
You need to live
somewhere else safely.
God who gave
life to this body
for some reason
now separated them both.
Though we might give
various reasons for this,
the Creator won’t give
any response to us.
Our physical communication
has gone with the body.
Where the soul has gone,
we don’t know.
But the relationship
still continues,
though none of us know
with whom.
As God alone
gave this relationship
to live as relatives:
parents, children,
siblings, and others,
this relationship
still continues
even after death.
What He gave,
He took back and we cannot stop it.
He gave the relationship
that He also cannot separate.
Accepting what He took back
and celebrating what He gave
is the best for us
as long as we live.
Therefore, Amma,
you continue to be there.
You live in your relationship
as a mother.
Though I might miss
another opportunity to see you,
you will always remain
permanently in this relationship.

BT Song 1477 – Thou Livest in Relationship
Classical English Version
Though this be
a loss for me,
if this hath given thee
thy freedom,
that sufficeth for me.
What else need I?
Thou must live
somewhere else in safety.
God, who gaveth
life to this body,
for some reason
now hath separated them both.
Though we might give
various reasons for this,
the Creator respondeth not
to our inquiries.
Our physical communication
hath departed with the body.
Whither the soul hath gone,
we know not.
Yet the relationship
doth still continue,
though none of us knoweth
with whom.
As God alone
hath bestowed this relationship,
to live as relatives:
parents, children,
siblings, and others,
this relationship
doth still continue
even after death.
What He hath given,
He hath taken back, and we cannot prevent it.
He hath given the relationship
which He also cannot sunder.
Accepting what He hath taken back
and celebrating what He hath bestowed
is best for us
whilst we live.
Therefore, Amma,
thou continuest to be there.
Thou livest in thy relationship
as a mother.
Though I might miss
another opportunity to see thee,
thou shalt ever remain
permanently in this relationship.

Greater than ten teachers is the preceptor: greater than ten preceptors is the father: and greater than ten fathers is the mother. The mother is greater than even the earth. There is no guru greater than the mother.[Anushasana-parva, 105.14-5; also Shanti-parva, 108.16-7.]— Chaturvedi Badrinath, The Mahabharata: An Inquiry in the human condition, New Delhi, Orient Longman, 2007, p.360
It is only the mother who gives comfort and heals those in distress. Only that long does a person feel protected as long as the mother is alive; without her, he feels he is unprotected wholly.[Shanti-parva, 266.26]—ibid. p.361 [தாயற்றுப் போனால் சீரற்றுப் போகும்=once mother is gone, one won’t get welfare—Tamil proverb]
…maybe poor, he is still rich on entering his home, calling out to his mother.[Shanti-parva, 266.27]—ibid. p.361
Himself now a father, and a grandfather too, and of age one hundred, he behaves with his mother as if two years old.[Shanti-parva, 266.28]—ibid. p.361
Therefore, in the Mbh., and in the dharmashastra-s too, there is nothing more reprehensible than to disregard one’s mother.[See Shanti–parva, 108.13,28-30] The father may be repudiated but never the mother.—ibid. p.361

18. …these my father and mother are the idols I worship with whatever adoration due to the gods. 19. Thirty three million gods with Indra at their head, are worshiped by all men, so are these aged parents of mind worshipped by me….21 these my father and mother are my supreme gods…. I always try to gratify them with the offering of fruits, flowers, and gems. 2. To me they are like the three sacred fires mentioned by the learned….they are to me as the sacrifice in the four Vedas. 23. My five vital airs, my wife, children, and friends are all for them. With my wife and my children, I always serve them. 24. …with my own hands I assist them in bathing; I also wash their feet, I give them food. 25. I speak to them only what is agreeable, avoiding all that is unpleasant and disagreeable. I even do that which is not virtuous, to please them. 26-28. …I am always diligent in always waiting upon them. The parents, the sacred, fire, the soul, the preceptor,–these five ..deserve the highest worship from a person who seeks prosperity. By properly serving them, one acquires the merit of perpetually keeping up the sacred fires. It is the eternal and invariable duty of all who lead domestic life. [Fowler to Kunshika].—ibid. VANA PARVA, Vol. 2, Ch. CCXII..p.322

BT Song 1478
Others might think I am going overboard and still continue to cry for my mother. It is not mere emotional attachment but an umbilical relationship that makes me cry, often thinking about my mother as I miss her very much. The Lord understands and joins me in this madness as He gets trapped in the net of bhakti. So, after crying for some time, I poured out my heart and wrote this song expressing my current condition. Dragging God into our situation is part of bhakti; rather, it is bhakti. Bhakti is not just emotional expression or intellectual understanding but celebrating our relationship with God in every part of our lives.
BT Song 1478 – Both Became Mad
Simple English
Once we both
Became mad;
Who is to give treatment
To whom?
I babble like a
Mad person,
Intoxicated
With bhakti.
As you too
Are ensnared in the net of bhakti,
You lament
Seeing my state.
As I lament
Thinking of my mother,
You become sad
Considering my plight.
Who is to offer
Comfort to whom?
And how shall we both
Live by encouraging each other?
You know well that
If you bestow bhakti,
This alone
Will occur.
By placing bhakti
Above buddhi,
You have made the buddhi
Subject to the control of bhakti.
Bhakti will not deny
What buddhi states;
Buddhi will not reject
What bhakti accomplishes.
If both unite
And act in this manner,
What else will transpire
Except becoming mad?
Fortunately,
Our conditions
Have now
Aligned.
As I listen to you
And you listen to me,
We both comprehend
Each other’s mind.
It is better to remain
In this state for a while,
As it is
Beneficial for both of us.
As others keep away
From us, observing our state,
We can live
Unperturbed by them.
Should this become
Our permanent condition,
Then both of us
Shall be considered mad.
Gurukulam, 16-1-2023, 8.00 p.m.
BT Song 1478 – Both Became Mad
Classical English
Once we both
Did become mad;
Who shall administer
Treatment to whom?
I, like a
Mad person, do babble,
Intoxicated
By devotion’s spell.
As thou, too,
Art ensnared in devotion’s net,
Thou lamentest
Seeing my plight.
As I mourn
Reflecting on my mother,
Thou art distressed
For my condition.
Who is to offer
Consolation to whom?
And how shall we both
Live, encouraging each other?
Thou knowest well
That if thou dost bestow devotion,
This alone
Shall come to pass.
By placing devotion
Above reason,
Thou hast made reason
Subject to devotion’s sway.
Devotion will not gainsay
What reason propounds;
Reason will not reject
What devotion accomplishes.
If both unite
And thus behave,
What else shall occur
But madness?
Fortuitously,
Our conditions
Have now
Become the same.
As I hearken to thee
And thou to me,
We both do grasp
Each other’s intent.
It is preferable to dwell
In this state for a time,
As it is
Beneficial for us both.
As others shun
Our presence, beholding our state,
We may live
Untroubled by them.
Should this become
Our enduring state,
Then we both
Shall be deemed mad.
BT Song 1479
As my mother is gone, I began to think about what will happen to my future life, particularly if God allows me to live long enough. Imagining various possibilities, I cannot come to a conclusion. I always believe in living ‘one day at a time’ and, though not anxious about my future, I still think about it. However, after considering various options and sitting calmly, I wrote this poem as my prayer to the Lord. It is His responsibility; I need not think or plan about my future but live according to my principle of ‘one day at a time.’
Simple English Version
BT Song 1479 – Your Responsibility
This life of mine
is given by you.
How should I live
this life, you tell me.
Better teach me
and help me to live.
You also come
and live with me.
Though my heart
says something,
I don’t know
what is good for me.
I don’t know
for sure
what you think
for my life.
Today has gone
very well.
Tomorrow belongs
to you.
I can live
only like this,
and you know
how to make me live.
Therefore, why should I
think about
tomorrow’s life
today itself?
I should only
pray that
tomorrow also
goes like this.
Even that anxiety
also belongs to you.
Why should I
mention it?
My only duty
is to live each day
as you bestow.
That is my task.
Completing that task
today and preparing
to live
for tomorrow,
I came to
give thanks to you
before I
retired to bed.
If you give
another day tomorrow,
I will try
my best to live it.
If you call me
tonight itself,
I will come unto you
giving thanks.
If this remains
my final song,
that would be
great indeed.
If you make me
write another song tomorrow,
you alone are
responsible for that.
Gurukulam, 23-1-2023, 1.15 am.

for my life.
Today hath gone
very well.
Tomorrow belongs
to thee.
I can live
only thus,

how to make me live.

BT Song 1480
When I think about my mother, a burden presses on my heart, and I begin to shed tears immediately. Particularly as my mother passed away exactly four weeks ago, and I was sitting next to her the whole night crying, recalling the incident, I cannot control myself and begin to cry loudly. Fortunately, I am alone, and there are no neighbors around me, so I have the freedom to cry loudly. Unable to sleep, I got up and wrote this poem to pour out my heart. In one way, this pain is good for me as it works as a healing therapy.
BT Song 1480 – I Need This Pain
Simple English Version
Four weeks
Have gone quickly.
Days and times
Are fleeing.
But your
Memory remains
Within me
Very deeply.
Though I have
Lost you
Who were with me
Last month.
You will always
Remain with me
As I have you
Always as my mother.
There is
No other relationship
Like that of
A mother and baby.
There is no
Chance for the
Umbilical cord
Relationship to be severed forever.
There is no
Way for my heart
To find comfort
As I shed tears thinking of you often.
Somehow you
Didn’t give me
The strength
To bear the burden of separation.
When I get
The chance to
Remember you again
In that pain.
I need this
Pain also in my life
And I should see
You in that pain.
Days and time
Will flee as usual
And the scenes in the world
Will change.
But as long as
There is a heart
Your memory will
Always be there.
As that memory
Gives me burden
And as I shed
Tears by crying.
As long as
I have this body,
Your relationship will
Give me much comfort.

BT Song 1476 – அடையாளம் காட்டுறான்
எதிர்பார்த்த ஒன்று

அடையாளம் காட்டுறான் 12
இத்தனை சிறப்புகள்

இருவரின் மனதும்
ஒருவாறு புரிந்தது 11
இந்த நிலையிலே
சிலகாலம் வாழ்வது
உனக்கும் எனக்கும்
மிகமிக நல்லது 12
இருவரின் நிலைகண்டு
பிறருமே ஒதுங்க
எவ்வித இடையூறும்
இன்றியே வாழலாம் 13
இதுவே நிரந்தரம்
என்றுமே ஆனால்
பைத்தியம் ஆகவே
நாமும் மாறலாம் 14

BT Song 1479 – உனது பொறுப்பு
இந்த வாழ்வு
நீதந்த ஒன்று
இதனை எப்படி
வாழணும் என்று 1
சொல்லித் தந்து
வாழ வைப்பாய்
துணையாய் நீயும்
வாழ வருவாய் 2
என்மனம் ஒன்று
சொல்லிய போதும்
எனக்கெது நல்லது
என்பது தெரியாது 3
உன்மனம் என்ன
எண்ணுது என்று
எனக்கு என்றும்
நிச்சயம் புரியாது 4
இன்றைய வாழ்வு
போனது நன்று
நாளைய வாழ்வும்
உனது என்று 5
வாழ மட்டும்
எனக்குத் தெரியும்
வாழ வைக்கும்
உனக்குப் புரியும் 6
ஆகவே நாளைய
வாழ்வு பற்றி
எதற்காக நான்
இன்றே எண்ணணும் 7
இன்றுபோல் நாளை
சென்றிட வேண்டும்
என்று மட்டும்
வேண்டிட வேண்டும் 8
அந்த கவலையும்
உனதுமே ஆச்சு
அதுபற்றி எனக்கு
இனியென்ன பேச்சு 9
ஒவ்வொரு நாளும்
நீதரும் வாழ்வை
வாழ்ந்து முடிப்பதே
என்கடன் ஆச்சு 10
அந்த பணியை
இன்று செய்து
நாளை வாழ
ஆயத்தம் செய்து 11
தூங்க நான்
போகும் முன்னே
நன்றி சொல்ல
உன்முன் வந்தேன் 12
மீண்டும் நாளை
வாழ்வு தந்தால்
முடிந்த மட்டும்
வாழ்ந்து முடிப்பேன் 13
இன்று இரவே
என்னை அழைத்தால்
நன்றி கூறி
வந்து சேர்வேன் 14
இதுவே எனது
இறுதி பாடல்
என்று இருந்தால்
மிகவும் நல்லது 15
மீண்டும் பாடல்
எழுத வைத்தால்
முழுக்க முழுக்க
உனது பொறுப்பு 16

BT Song 1480வலி வேண்டும்
நாலு வாரம்
ஓடிப் போச்சு
நாளும் பொழுதும்
பறந்து போச்சு 1
ஆயினும் உனது
நினைவு மட்டும்
ஆணிபோல் மனதில்
பதிந்து இருக்கு 2
சென்ற மாதம்
இருந்த உன்னை
இந்த மாதம்
இழந்த போதும் 3
அன்னை என்ற
உறவு மட்டும்
என்றும் என்னுடன்
இணைந்து இருக்கும் 4
தாய்சேய் உறவு
போல ஒன்று
அவனி மீது
ஏதும் இல்லை 5
தொப்புள் கொடியில்
தொடங்கிய உறவு
துண்டித்து செல்ல
வாய்ப்பு இல்லை 6
உன்னை எண்ணி
கண்ணீர் சிந்தும்
என்மனம் ஆற
வழியும் இலை 7
இழப்பின் வலியை
தாங்கும் வலிமை
எனக்கு ஏனோ
நீதர வில்லை 8
அந்த வலியில்
உன்னை மீண்டும்
உணரும் பேறு
கிடைக்கும் போது 9
இந்த வலியும்
எனக்கு வேண்டும்
இதிலே உன்னை
காண வேண்டும் 10
நாளும் பொழுதும்
ஓடிப் போகும்
காணும் உலகின்
காட்சி மாறும் 11
நெஞ்சம் ஒன்று
இருக்கும் மட்டும்
நினைவு மட்டும்
அதிலே இருக்கும் 12
அந்த நினைவு
நெஞ்சை அழுத்த
அழுது கண்ணீர்
நானும் சிந்த 13
இந்த தேகம்
இருக்கும் மட்டும்
உன்உறவு என்னை
தேற்றி ஆற்றும் 14
