BT Song 1546
We can repay others’ debts, even to God, but we can never repay the debt to our mother. The cost she pays to bring us into this world is her very life, and the sacrifices she makes to raise us start with her blood. Even if we are born to the same mother in the next life, we cannot repay that debt as we will incur new debt in that birth. Still, each child would prefer to be born to the same mother, if there is another birth. As I reflected on the last day of my mother’s life, with many tears, I wrote this song, longing to have her alone as my mother in future births—though I am unsure if that is possible. Whether mere theory or philosophy, even though each one desires their parents to attain moksha and escape eternal samsara (repeated birth and death), the affection for one’s mother makes one long to be born again as her child. As Manikkavasagar sang, it is worth having repeated human births if it means one can repeatedly have the darshan of God (Nataraja). The same is true for one’s mother in this life.
BT Song 1546 Should Incur Debt
Simple English
Is it possible to tell
All that you have done for me?
Are there enough numbers
To count all the burdens you carried for me?
Your sacrifice is
So vast
That it made me
A permanent debtor to you.
Suppose if there is
Another birth,
If possible, I would come
Again as your son.
If I try to pay back
My debts to you,
How can I pay back
The new debts that I will incur?
To pay back the debt to relatives,
We can help in many ways.
To finish the debt of other family members,
We can do many things.
By giving alms and
Doing all other rituals,
One can pay back
The debt to one’s father.
But how could anyone
Pay back the debt to a mother?
In which future birth and
In which way?
Still, you alone
Should become
My mother
In the next birth also.
Though I might accumulate
Unpayable new debts,
I also should be born again
As your child.
Though we are born repeatedly
And die again,
You should still become
An unbreakable relationship.
That alone would
Console me,
As I am mourning
Your loss very much.
Longing to have
Another birth to see you,
Spending the rest of my days
With much sorrow.
To come quickly
Back to you,
God alone should
Show Her grace to me.

BT Song 1546 Should Incur Debt
Classical English
Can it be told
All thou hast done for me?
Are there sufficient numbers
To count all the burdens thou hast borne?
Thy sacrifice is
So vast
That it hath made me
A permanent debtor to thee.
Suppose there is
Another birth,
If possible, I would come
Again as thy son.
If I endeavor to repay
My debts to thee,
How can I repay
The new debts that I shall incur?
To repay the debt to kin,
We may assist in myriad ways.
To resolve the debt of other family members,
We can perform various deeds.
By giving alms and
Performing all other rites,
One may repay
The debt to one’s father.
But how can anyone
Repay the debt to a mother?
In which future birth and
In what manner?
Still, thou alone
Should become
My mother
In the next birth also.
Though I might accrue
Unpayable new debts,
I should also be born again
As thy child.
Though we are born repeatedly
And die again,
Thou should still become
An everlasting bond.
That alone would
Console me,
As I deeply mourn
Thy loss.
Longing to have
Another birth to see thee,
Spending the rest of my days
With much sorrow.
To come swiftly
Back to thee,
The Divine alone should
Show Her grace to me.

BT Song 1547
A kind of silence came within me. It might be a stoic indifference to what is happening around me or to me. I even became upset with God and did not want to communicate with Him. I threw my hands up and said, “Let things go as they will, as I have no say in this.” But on the other side, my spirit would not allow me to remain calm and urged me to take the matter to the Lord and pour out my heart. However, I began to resist even that urge, and then my spirit began to rebuke me for this so-called ‘silence’ that I tried to keep within me.
BT Song 1547 No Time
Simple English
While he is there,
to do what is said,
What is the need to
hesitate and be tired?
When there is a generous one
to give what is asked,
Why not ask?
What is the reason?
When he gives
without reluctance,
How can reluctance
to ask come?
Is there any
hesitation in you?
Or is there
another reason?
All such things
Were put away
And you remained
Peaceful, isn’t it?
What will he ask?
How will he ask?
Even God fears,
Thinking this.
The calm before the storm,
How will it change,
We know.
Just like that, your silence
Is also there.
And he surely
Understands this.
A mute person’s trick,
The whole town knows.
The mischief you do,
Everyone understands.
Anyway, your work will happen,
Whatever you do,
He knows it too.
So, break your silence,
And say what you came to say,
Quickly.
To give you all his time,
Isn’t that enough?
The drama was well performed,
Enough of it.
Receive what you asked for,
And say good bye

BT Song 1547 No Leisure
Classical English
When present to perform
what is spoken,
What necessity is there for
weariness and delay?
When a bounteous one exists
to grant what is asked,
Why refrain from asking?
What reason is there?
When he gives
without disdain,
How can weariness
to ask arise?
Is there any hesitation
within you?
Or another reason
at play?
All such matters
Were subdued,
And you remained
In peace, did you not?
What shall he ask?
How shall he ask?
Even the deity fears,
Pondering thus.
The calm preceding the tempest,
How it shall alter,
We know well.
In similar fashion, your silence
Exists too.
And he surely
Understands this.
The trickery of a mute,
The entire village knows.
The mischief you engage in,
Everyone comprehends.
Regardless, your task will be accomplished,
Whatever you undertake,
He knows it too.
Thus, break your silence,
And swiftly speak
What you came to say.
To devote his full time to you,
Is that not sufficient?
The play was performed well,
Sufficiently.
Receive what you asked for,
And pack your things to say good bye.

BT Song 1548
As I suffered from back pain and was unable to move much, I was taking complete rest at Deepak’s house in Hyderabad. As I recovered, today I managed to move a bit and started walking slowly. But due to severe pain, I could not sleep much. Though I lay down to sleep, I got up because I could not sleep, and when I began to think about all He has done in my life, inspiration came, and I wrote this song, rebuking my mind never to hesitate to ask for more when He is ready to bestow.
BT Song 1548 Your Responsibility
Simple English
Gratitude should be expressed,
Thinking of the good deeds you do.
Yet I live, forgetting to do that,
Forgetting you.
If I refuse to do what is asked,
How can I get angry?
When you do things without being asked,
Even the speaking mouth falls silent.
Yet you do not get angry,
You maintain peace, thinking of my troubles.
If you compete with a list,
Asking questions,
What can I do?
A dilemma like a moral crisis,
Has never come to you until now.
Yet, getting stuck in it often,
And standing ashamed,
Is my nature.
If you say I should often express thanks,
Without pushing me to that state,
Giving me a heart that matches it,
Keeping everything done in mind,
Filled with gratitude,
Praising and singing to you,
That too is your responsibility.

BT Song 1548 Thy Responsibility
Classical English
Gratitude should be expressed,
Reflecting on the virtues thou perform.
Yet I live, forgetting to do that,
Forgetting thee.
If I refuse to fulfill what is asked,
How can anger then be aroused?
When thou do acts without being asked,
Even the speaking mouth falls silent.
Yet thou dost not get angry,
Thou maintain peace, thinking of my woes.
If thou compete with a ledger,
Asking questions,
What then shall I do?
A dilemma like a moral quandary,
Hath never come to thee until now.
Yet, often enmeshed in it,
And standing ashamed,
Is my nature.
If thou sayest I should often express thanks,
Without thrusting me into such plight,
Granting me a heart that matches it,
Keeping all deeds in memory,
Filled with gratitude,
Praising and singing to thee,
That too is thy responsibility.

BT Song 1549
As I recovered much from back pain and even resumed my evening walk on the roof, I retired to bed at night and thanked God for remaining faithful to His promise. I urged Him to bestow upon me a heart to remain thankful to Him always. As inspiration came, I wrote this song.
BT Song 1549 No Equal
Simple English
After saying yes,
There is no worry in the mind.
After coming and standing in your presence,
There is no doubt in the mind.
Yet this knowledge alone
Does not wish to stay calm.
A thousand questions,
Torture me often.
Oh Lord, besides your refuge,
I have no answer.
The questions humans ask,
Even the mind does not want them.
The answers received so far
Refuse to bring peace.
Desiring a life
Without questions and answers,
Coming to you
To ask for protection,
Removing worries,
Dispelling doubts,
The peace you give
Has no equal.

BT Song 1549 No Equal
Classical English
Having given consent,
There is no turmoil in the mind.
After arriving and standing at thy presence,
There is no doubt in the mind.
Yet this wisdom alone
Does not wish to remain still.
A thousand questions,
Oft torment me.
Oh Lord, besides thy refuge,
I have no answer.
The inquiries of mortals,
Even the mind desires them not.
The responses received thus far
Refuse to grant peace.
Desiring a life
Without questions and answers,
Coming to thee
To seek protection,
Dispersing worries,
Banishing doubts,
The peace thou grant
Has no equal.

BT Song 1550
While staying with Kantha, who has now become a Congress MLA, in his comfortable house, I got up early after a hectic day of program visits to his constituency. I participated in the opening of his party office, went around in procession, and even gave a talk at the public meeting. Deepak was also staying with me. As I managed to get good rest and my back pain was gone, I lay down on the couch, reflecting on the frustrating nature of my heart, which never remains static with one thought. I was also torn in my mind between new opportunities to serve others and my longing to remain a recluse. I told Deepak that all these years, I have been wandering, not enjoying my life alone. Now that my mother has passed, I want to spend the rest of my life as a recluse. However, considering the needs of many and God’s demand to remain faithful to His call to serve others, I was again torn between my desire to live a solitary life and doing God’s will. Then, as inspiration came, I wrote this song, not knowing what to do further.
BT Song 1550 I Gave Consent
Simple English
You make me cross
unknown boundaries,
You make me understand
unclear actions.
If I always said,
“I don’t know, I don’t understand,”
You would say,
“Do it without knowing, without understanding.”
Everything I have
done so far,
How much of it did you do
with understanding?
If you understood everything,
You would still make mistakes,
So I refused to make you understand.
Because you crossed
unknown boundaries,
You clearly understood my grace.
If I had made you struggle within known limits,
How would you understand my actions?
After you clearly said this,
Without asking more, silently,
Wherever I send you,
You dared to go,
Whatever I tell you,
You agreed to do.

BT Song 1550 I Gave Consent
Classical English
Thou makest me traverse unknown realms,
Thou makest me grasp unclear deeds.
If I always proclaimed,
“I know not, I understand not,”
Thou wouldst say,
“Act without knowing, without understanding.”
All that I have thus far performed,
How much of it didst thou accomplish with understanding?
If thou understood all,
Still thou wouldst err,
Hence I declined to make thee understand.
For crossing unknown realms,
Thou clearly comprehended my grace.
Had I made thee toil within known bounds,
How wouldst thou fathom my actions?
After thou clearly spoke thus,
Without further inquiry, in silence,
Whither I send thee,
Thou dared to go,
Whatever I instruct thee,
Thou agreed to perform.

BT Song 1546 கடனாளி ஆகணும்
செய்தது எத்தனை
சொல்லியே மாளுமா
சுமந்தது எத்தனை
எண்களும் போதுமா
கைமாறு செய்ய
இயல்லாமல் என்னை
கடனாளி ஆக்கிய
தியாகமும் கொஞ்சமா
இன்னொரு பிறவி
என்று இருந்தால்
உனக்கே மகனாகி
வந்தே நானும்
எஞ்சிய கடனை
அடைக்க முயன்றால்
அதில்வரும் கடனை
எப்படி அடைப்பேன்
உறவின் கடனுக்கு
உதவிகள் செய்யலாம்
சுற்றத்தின் கடனை
பிரவிதம் தீர்க்கலாம்
தான தர்மம்
மற்றவை செய்து
தந்தையின் கடனை
ஒருவிதம் அடைக்கலாம்
ஆனால் அன்னைக்கு
பட்ட கடனை
எப்பிறப்பில் எவர்
எப்படி தீர்ப்பார்
ஆயினும் அடுத்த
பிறவியில் நீயே
எனக்கு தாயாய்
நிச்சயம் வரணும்
தீர்க்க முடியா
கடன் சேர்ந்தாலும்
சேயாய் உனக்கு
நானும் பொறக்கணும்
பலமுறை பிறந்து
மறைந்த போதும்
மறையா உறவாய்
நீயே மாறணும்
ஆகவே உன்னை
இழந்து வாடும்
எனக்கு அதுவே
ஆறுதல் ஆகும்
மீண்டும் காணும்
பிறவிக்கு ஏங்கி
எஞ்சிய நாட்களை
துயருடன் ஒட்டி
சீக்கிரம் உன்னிடம்
வந்திடும் நாளை
தெய்வமே எனக்கு
அருளிட வேண்டும்

Bhakti Song 1546
