BT Song 1566

Last night, I woke up at 3:00 am. Though I was tired and didn’t want to get out of bed, I had to use the restroom. When I lay back down, a new line for the song [BT 1566] came to mind. Ignoring it, I tried to sleep, but my thoughts wouldn’t let me. I decided to record just the first four lines on my phone, but once I started, the next lines kept coming, resulting in a complete song. Frustrated and surprised, I wondered how so many thoughts and words could come from an empty mind. Until I renounce even the very thought, I cannot escape from it and its words.

BT Song 1566 You also are acting

 Simple English

1

When you are

Acting in a play,

What else can I do

Other than act too?

2

When you are

Making me dance,

What else can I do

Other than dance?

3

Who asked

For this play?

Who enjoyed

Your story and lines?

4

If you had seen

The play we did,

Then you would

Understand this.

5

When we come to you

Tired of writing

And performing

Many plays,

6

If you also

Put on a play,

To whom can we

Go and complain?

7

Not wanting to see,

Unable to refuse,

When we suffer

Like this.

8

If you say

This is also our act,

Then you also act

Like us, by saying this.

9

What is the need

For us to put on

Counter-plays

Like this?

10

Knowing what

Our real needs are

And acting accordingly

Is good for all of us.

1

When thou art

Enacting a drama,

What else can I do

But act in like manner?

2

When thou art

Bidding me dance,

What else can I do

But join in the dance?

3

Who hath asked

For this drama?

Who hath enjoyed

Thy tale and dialogue?

4

Hadst thou seen

The drama we performed,

Thou wouldst then

Comprehend this.

5

When we come to thee,

Wearied of penning

And performing

Numerous dramas,

6

If thou likewise

Stage such a drama,

To whom shall we

Then lodge our complaint?

7

Not wishing to see,

Yet unable to refuse,

When we endure

Thus.

8

If thou dost say

This too is our act,

Then act thou also

As we, by this saying.

9

What need is there

For us to stage

Counter-dramas

In this manner?

10

Knowing well

Our practical needs,

Acting thus is

Good for all.

BT Song 1567

Yesterday, I was invited to the inauguration of a Ram [or Modi] Temple in our local village by the village head. After the havan (yajna), when the call was given for arati, I went along with others. As the arati was about to begin, some devotees started ringing the bells hanging from the ceiling. Suddenly, the sound of drums and bells came from a corner of the temple. I was shocked to see an electric instrument doing both simultaneously. When the priest signaled to stop, someone switched it off.

I remembered how, in the past, devotees used to ring the big bells during arati. My mother, known as ‘Bell Mami’ in the Nataraja temple at Chidambaram, would go every evening and ring the bell during the main arati. When I visited my parents back in the late 1970s, I would accompany her and ring one bell while she rang the other. Seeing electric instruments replace this seva, I wondered how God would feel and wrote this song. I had already written about the future of such technology’s invasion in my article ‘Robo Guru.’

NB: When my sister called, I shared about the electric drum and bell. She said this isn’t new and has been around for at least ten years.

BT Song 1567 Robo Bell

 Simple English

1

Poor God ,

And He is indeed sad,

Not having any devotees

To serve Him.

2

When the time

For Arati comes,

All gather

Before Him.

3

Beating the drum

And ringing the bell,

They performed

Many services with devotion.

4

Without having

Time for that,

They even arranged

[electric] Instruments for that.

5

If this is

The current situation,

He is troubled

Thinking about the future.

6

Instruments performing

Many services,

Robots coming

As devotees to the temple.

7

Singing and worshiping Him

With much love and devotion,

Receiving Prasad

From Him.

8

Returning back

To their places calmly,

They will give that Prasad

To their masters.

9

Will it stop here?

We don’t know,

And how far this will go,

We cannot understand.

10

But seeing what is

Already happening,

All the things

That AI will do.

11

Thinking about all

Kinds of new inventions by them,

Poor God is indeed

Very much confused.

12

After observing

All these things,

Thinking this is

Kaliyuga.

13

He blames Himself,

Thinking that

All are His own

Mistakes indeed.

Gurukulam, 23-1-24, 8.10 am

BT Song 1567 Robo Bell

 Classical English

1

Poor God, indeed

He laments,

Having no devotees

To render service unto Him.

2

When the hour

For Arati doth arrive,

All assemble

Before Him.

3

With drumbeats

And bell ringing,

They performed

Divers services with great devotion.

4

Lacking time

For such acts,

They even arranged

[electric] Instruments for the same.

5

If this be

The present state,

He is much troubled

Pondering the future.

6

Instruments conducting

Many services,

Robots arriving

As devotees to the temple.

7

Singing and worshiping Him

With much love and devotion,

Receiving Prasad

From His hand.

8

Returning thence

Calmly to their abodes,

They will present that Prasad

To their masters.

9

Will it cease here?

We know not,

And how far this shall extend,

We cannot fathom.

10

But witnessing what is

Already unfolding,

The myriad tasks

That AI shall perform.

11

Considering all

Their novel inventions,

Poor God is indeed

Greatly perplexed.

12

After beholding

All these happenings,

Reflecting this is

The age of Kaliyuga.

13

He blames Himself,

Pondering that

All these are His own

Mistakes indeed.

BT Song 1568

I know there is no point in mourning the dead, but while the body is gone, the relationship remains. I find it difficult to forget my mother. Often, her face comes to mind. I sleep in the same room where she lived and died. This evening, when I saw her photo, I couldn’t control my tears and told her, “Other than your face, whose face is there for me to look to for consolation in life?” With tears, I wrote this song expressing my grief. Various scriptures and theologies speak of life after death, but they are based on faith, not fact. The only fact now is that the body is gone, but relationships continue, particularly a mother’s, which cannot be replaced, even by God.

 BT Song 1568 Your Face

 Simple English

1

Where have you gone,

Leaving your child,

Who grew up

Seeing only your face?

2

I don’t know whose face

I should look at now.

You never taught

That to me.

3

There’s no use

In seeing others’ faces,

As they are

Not like you.

4

There’s no hope

Of seeing God’s face,

As I have never

Seen Him before.

5

There’s no use

In seeing His face,

As He wears different masks

For everyone.

6

So I often think

Of your face

And cry, remembering

Your face.

7

I don’t know for sure

If I’ll get another chance

To see

Your face.

8

Often thinking of you

In my heart

And seeing your

Face there.

9

Though I try to

Find comfort in it,

There is no

Use in it either.

10

This grief will

Remain within me,

And until the end of my life,

I will often remember you.

11

As I found

Some consolation in it,

I don’t even want

To give it up.

12

Seeing your face

In that grief,

Somehow spending

The rest of my life.

13

If I could see

Your face when I come there,

That would be

Enough for me now.

Gurukulam, 29-1-24, 6.10 pm.

BT Song 1568 Your Face

 Classical English

1

Whither hast thou gone,

Forsaking thy child,

Who grew in life

By beholding thy face alone?

2

I know not whose face

I should now regard.

Thou never taught me

That lesson.

3

‘Tis futile

To gaze upon others’ faces,

For they are not

Like unto thine.

4

There is no hope

Of beholding the face of God,

As I have never

Seen Him hitherto.

5

There is no use

In viewing His visage,

For He dons various masks

According to each one.

6

Thus, oft pondering

Thy countenance,

And weeping,

Remembering thy face.

7

Not knowing with certainty

If I shall ever have

Another chance

To see thy face.

8

Oft thinking of thee

Within my heart,

And seeing thy

Face therein.

9

Though I seek

Comfort therein,

‘Tis of no avail

In truth.

10

This sorrow shall

Abide within me,

And until life’s end,

I shall remember thee oft.

11

Finding some solace

Therein,

I would not even

Relinquish it.

12

Beholding thy face

Amidst my grief,

Thus shall I spend

The remainder of my days.

13

If I might behold

Thy face upon my arrival there,

That alone would suffice

For me now.

Gurukulam, 29-1-24, 6.10 pm.

BT Song 1569

Both God and mother have several similarities. God remains invisible, while Mother remains visible, showing what God would do if He lived among us physically. There is no other relationship like a mother on this earth. Similarly, for a bhakta, their chosen deity (ishta devata) is all-sufficient. Just as a mother cannot be compared to any other human relationship, neither can the ishta devata. Whatever they both do for their child is the best way to enjoy life on this earth.

BT Song 1569 This is enough

 Simple English

1

Whether you give a little,

That is enough for me,

But you rejoice only in

Giving a lot.

2

Whether you give a little

Or give a lot,

The joy of your devotee

Is your only goal.

3

If her child rejoices,

The mother also rejoices.

If the child cries,

The mother will worry.

4

As you also show love

Like a mother,

No one else

Will be there for a devotee.

5

A mother won’t give

Everything a child demands.

If the child doesn’t ask for anything,

She will give voluntarily, knowing the need.

6

Who else will be

Like a mother

Who always keeps

The child’s welfare in mind?

7

Similarly, you also,

To keep my welfare

And to cultivate

My character,

8

Will remain careful

In deciding what,

How, and when

To give to me.

9

Therefore, on this earth,

Both God and mother,

Keeping the welfare of

The child and devotee,

10

What they both do,

Nobody understands,

Definitely not

Both the devotee and child.

11

Even if they cannot

Understand them,

Who else will take care of them

On this earth other than they?

12

Therefore, I also

Will live each day with you,

Content with

Whatever you bestow.

Gurukulam, 2-2-24, 6.00 pm.

BT Song 1569 This is enough

 Classical English

1

Whether thou bestowest sparingly,

That sufficeth for me,

Yet thou takest delight only in

Bestowing abundantly.

2

Whether thou givest sparingly

Or givest in plenty,

The joy of thy devotee

Is thy sole aim.

3

If her child rejoices,

The mother rejoices likewise.

If the child weeps,

The mother is distressed.

4

As thou showest love

Like unto a mother,

None other shall be

There for a devotee.

5

A mother will not grant

All that her child demands.

If the child asketh for naught,

She will give voluntarily, knowing the need.

6

Who else shall be

Like a mother,

Who always keeps

The child’s welfare at heart?

7

Similarly, thou also,

To preserve my welfare

And to cultivate

My character,

8

Wilt remain diligent

In deciding what,

How, and when

To bestow upon me.

9

Therefore, upon this earth,

Both God and mother,

Keeping the welfare of

The child and devotee,

10

What they both do,

No one comprehends,

Surely not

Both the devotee and child.

11

Though they cannot

Understand them,

Who else shall care for them

Upon this earth but they?

12

Therefore, I also

Shall live each day with thee,

Content with

Whatsoever thou bestowest.

Gurukulam, 2-2-24, 6.00 pm.

BT Song 1570

When I read the following Rumi’s song, I thought how adversaries can be God-sent angels bringing blessings into our lives. As I often say, God might use someone close to us to teach us a lesson. Knowing our weaknesses, He makes another person pay the cost for us to learn that valuable lesson. Our adversaries pay the cost for us rather than us paying it ourselves. Understanding God’s ultimate purpose for everyone allows us to see our adversaries not as enemies, but as part of God’s plan. We should pray for them to gain strength and receive grace to endure their ordeals.

As Ten Boom [in her book: Not Good if Detached] rightly said, ‘Our critics are the unpaid guardians of our soul’.

Checkmate:

…  … …

A certain preacher always prays long and with enthusiasm

For thieves and muggers that attack people

On the street. “Let your mercy, O Lord,

cover their insolence.”

He doesn’t pray for the good,

but only for the blatantly cruel.

Why is this? his congregation asks.

“Because they have done me such generous favors.

Every time I turn back toward the things they want.

I ran into them, they beat me, and leave me nearly dead

in the road, and I understand, again, that what they want

is not what I want. They keep me on the spiritual path.

That’s why I honor them and pray for them.”

Those that make you return, for whatever reason,

to God’s solitude, be grateful to them.

Worry about the others, who give you

delicious comforts that keep you from prayer.

Friends are enemies sometimes,

and enemies friends.

There is an animal called an ushghur, a porcupine.

If you hit it with a stick, it extends its quills

and gets bigger. The soul is a porcupine,

made strong by stick-beating.

So a prophet’s soul is especially afflicted,

because it has to become so powerful.

A hide is soaked in tanning liquor and becomes leather.

If the tanner did not rub in the acid,

the hide would get foul-smelling and rotten.

The soul is a newly skinned hide, bloody and gross.

Work on it with manual discipline,

and the bitter tanning acid of grief,

and you’ll become lovely, and very strong. (174)

If you can’t do this work yourself, don’t worry.

You don’t even have to make a decision,

one way or another. The Friend, who knows

a lot more than you do, will bring difficulties,

and grief, and sickness,

as medicine, as happiness,

as the essence of the moment when you’re beaten,

when you hear Checkmate, and can finally say,

with Hallaj’s voice,

I trust you to kill me. (p. 175)

BT Song 1570 Friends of Our Soul

 Simple English

1

You better give

Thanks to those

Who drive us

Towards God.

2

Better avoid those

Who try to persuade you

To keep away

From Him.

3

Whatever troubles

Might come in life,

And whoever might be

The reason for that,

4

They alone are

Friends to our soul.

Realizing this,

Give them thanks.

5

If we receive only

Blessings in life,

We might not even

Remember God for a second.

6

Even if a small trouble

Comes in our lives,

Immediately we will

Rush towards Him.

7

Therefore, whoever it might be

Who forced us to

Look unto the

Face of God,

8

Think about them,

Give thanks to them,

Continue to pray for them

To live properly.

9

As they have become

Merely an instrument

In the hands of God

To draw us towards Him.

10

And if we live

Realizing this truth,

Along with enmity,

Our troubles will disappear.

11

There is no need

For us to seek

Our adversaries

To bring trouble to us.

12

Even God doing

That part also,

Will come and Overlord us

Through them.

Gurukulam, 2-2-24, 11.00 pm.

BT Song 1570 Friends of Our Soul

 Classical English

1

‘Tis better to give

Thanks to those

Who drive us

Towards God.

2

Better to shun those

Who seek to persuade thee

To keep away

From Him.

3

Whatsoever troubles

Might come in life,

And whosoever might be

The cause thereof,

4

They alone are

Friends to our soul.

Realizing this,

Give them thanks.

5

If we receive only

Blessings in life,

We might not even

Remember God for a moment.

6

Even if a small trouble

Comes in our lives,

Immediately we will

Flee towards Him.

7

Therefore, whosoever it might be

Who hath compelled us

To look unto

The face of God,

8

Think upon them,

Give thanks to them,

Continue to pray for them

To live rightly.

9

As they have become

Mere instruments

In the hands of God

To draw us towards Him.

10

And if we live

In light of this truth,

Along with enmity,

Our troubles will vanish.

11

There is no need

For us to seek

Our adversaries

To bring trouble to us.

That part also,

Will come and overlord us

BT Song 1568
