BT Song 1581
“Concepts create idols; only wonder grasps anything.” — Gregory of Nyssa.
This is also true when it comes to bhakti. Bhakti never remains a concept or philosophy but becomes a relationship. Like all other human relationships that help one to live, bhakti does the same. Mere concepts, like philosophy, create only some ‘idol’ or ‘idolism’. Never allow bhakti to become a concept.
BT Song 1581 “Trust”
Simple English
1. Like an old man
Without a stick
Unable to walk
I am lying down
2. To stand tall
And walk confidently
Without devotion
I cannot live
3. Lift me up
Give me a stick
Train me again
To walk
4. Again, I
Without falling
With your eyes on me
You too
5. Let me walk
On my own
Again, you
Step back
6. Step by step
With fear
I too
Will walk
7. Where are you?
All around
I will look
8. Without seeing
Any vision
Without feeling
Your presence
9. Again, lying
Motionless
With the stick of
Devotion
10. Holding the hand
Of trust
I walk again
In life

BT Song 1581 “Trust”
Classical English
1. Like an aged man
Devoid of staff,
Disabled and supine,
Thus I lie.
2. To stand upright
And stride with courage,
Bereft of faith,
I cannot thrive.
3. Raise me up,
Provide a staff,
Train me anew,
That I might walk.
4. That I too,
Might not again fall,
With your watchful gaze,
And you too.
5. Permit me now
To tread alone,
And you once more
Withdraw.
6. Step upon step,
With trembling,
I too
Shall walk.
7. Where thou art
I shall perceive,
Surveying all around.
8. No vision seen,
Nor heart attuned
To feel thy presence.
9. Once more, unmoving,
I lie inert,
With faith’s staff
Firmly grounded.
10. Grasping the hand
Of trust,
I walk anew
In life.

BT Song 1582
All relationships remain a mystery. We understand without understanding properly. The more we live, the more we understand. This is truer when it comes to bhakti. Unless one lives in that relationship, all other forms and understandings about bhakti will remain elusive. The only way to communicate it to others is to live the life of bhakti, which alone will help them understand their bhakti while still striving to understand more and more.
BT Song 1582 “What’s the Need”
Simple English
1. Why should you
Talk with me
Why should you
Show yourself to me
2. To make me feel
That you are here
How much more
Should you do for me
3. I asked many times
For silent speech
I sought invisible visions
Every day
4. When I feel you
Without sensing
What is the need
For form and formlessness
5. I don’t need
Any of these
Telling others
Is also pointless
6. These things
Without any benefit
I don’t expect them
From you
7. Beyond the visible sights
Beyond the thoughts
That arise before me
8. Beyond the state
Called silence
I knew you
Without knowing
9. I too
Speaking without words
In a language
That understands and misunderstands
10. Trying to explain
Without clarity
Those who know and don’t know
Will understand
Dehradun, 26-2-2025, Night, 11.50
BT Song 1582 “What’s the Need”
Classical English
1. Wherefore should thou
Converse with me
Wherefore should thou
Reveal thyself to me
2. To assure me
Of thine existence
How much further
Must thou endeavor for me
3. I oft requested
For speech in silence
Invisible visions
I sought daily
4. When I sense thee
Without awareness
What need is there
For form and formlessness
5. I require not
Any of these
Nor is there value
In telling others
6. These things
Void of benefit
I expect not
From thee
7. Beyond the sights
Visible to mine eyes
Beyond the thoughts
That arise in my mind
8. Beyond the state
Known as silence
I perceived thee
Without perception
9. Likewise, I
Speaking without speech
In a tongue
Both clear and obscure
10. Striving to elucidate
Without clarity
Those who both know and know not
Shall understand
Dehradun, 26-2-2025, Night, 11.50
BT Song 1583
Another wonderful imagination of bhakti takes the real-life experience between a mother and child. We are familiar with the narrative in this song. The way the child pretends to be upset with the mother, expecting her to pamper it, and the way the mother first teases and then reaches out, enjoying the child’s reaction, is a vivid image that a bhakta could experience with the Lord. No doubt, unless one becomes like a child, the real nature of bhakti cannot be understood. Above all kinds of relationships, treating God as one’s mother is the best way of experiencing and expressing bhakti.
BT Song 1583 “Get Ready”
Simple English
1. There’s nothing
For me to say
Because you
Already know everything
2. There are a thousand things
I could say
For the reason that
You already know
3. I have the right
To speak or remain silent
But you have no right
To refuse to listen
4. When there are
Eyes that never close
And ears that never shut
What can you do?
5. Whether praised or blamed
Or blessed by the world
Where can you escape
From it all?
6. If I hide
In a corner out of spite
I’ll watch the fun
As you search
7. Pretending not to know
While knowing all
You’ll seek and come
To me
8. Stretching out your hand
To call me
I’ll turn
Towards the wall
9. Saying “Come when you will”
You too will try
When you try
To return
10. Suddenly I’ll come
And circle your leg
Saying “Lift me up”
I’ll persist
11. Without stopping there
I’ll strike your face
Fall on your shoulder
And cry
12. Every day without fail
We conduct this drama
We have never
Gone without it
13. The closeness it brings
Can’t be found elsewhere
We won’t give up
This game
14. There are a thousand
Such dramas
To say
I don’t have time
15. For that reason
I can’t leave you
A thousand reasons
For that exist too
16. Consider my right
And your duty
Think about
Just those two
17. Calmly listen
To what I say
Or get ready
To be punished
Dehradun, 27-2-2024, Morning, 5.30
BT Song 1583 “Get Ready”
Classical English
1. There is naught
For me to declare
For thou art already
Knowledgeable of all
2. A thousand things
I might declare
For thou dost
Know the reason
3. I possess the right
To speak or hold my peace
But thou hast no right
To refuse to hear
4. When ever-wakeful eyes
And unclosed ears are present
What then, canst thou do?
5. Whether praised, blamed
Or blessed by the world
Where canst thou escape
From it all?
6. When I hide
In a corner in spite
I’ll watch with amusement
As thou dost search
7. Feigning ignorance
Whilst knowing all
Thou wilt seek and come
To me
8. Stretching out thy hand
To summon me
I’ll turn
Towards the wall
9. Saying “Come when thou may”
Thou too wilt strive
When thou dost attempt
To return
10. Swiftly I’ll come
And encircle thy leg
Saying “Lift me up”
I’ll insist
11. Not stopping there
I’ll strike thy face
Fall upon thy shoulder
And weep
12. Each day without fail
We enact this drama
We have never
Gone without it
13. The intimacy it fosters
Cannot be found elsewhere
We shall not forsake
This game
14. A thousand such dramas
Exist
To relate
I have no time
15. For this reason
I cannot abandon thee
A thousand reasons
Exist for that too
16. Reflect upon my right
And thy duty
Consider
Only these two
17. With calmness hearken
To my words
Else be prepared
For chastisement

BT Song 1584
Though we can make God do our bidding and sanction our wishes, we still cannot manipulate Him by any means. We need to listen to Him and try to understand the way He moves things in our lives. Simply trying to twist God’s hand to dance according to our tune is impossible, and there is no point in blaming God after all our efforts to do so.
BT Song 1584 “Think”
Simple English
1. It’s been days since I read the Vedas
I completely forgot the prayers
But the lamenting hasn’t stopped
There’s never an end to it
2. Without asking before doing
Complaining after doing it
Saying, “How could you let go”
It’s of no use
3. Without seeking God at all
Without listening to people’s words
How many times have we ignored
What our own mind told us
4. In the way our mind went
Doing what we thought was right
Getting stuck after doing it
What’s the use of blaming God
5. We didn’t stop while doing it
Didn’t listen when it went wrong
How many times have we blamed
Saying, “What kind of God is this”
6. Listening to our own words
Doing the same every day
Where is the God who
Listens and follows us
7. No matter what we did
No matter how many temples we built
The God who dances to our tunes
Has never been with us
8. No need to read the Vedas
No need to pray either
Just stop the constant lamenting
Thinking will give the answer
Hyderabad, 1-3-2024, Morning, 10.30
BT Song 1584 “Ponder”
Classical English
1. Days have passed since I read the Vedas
I have completely forgotten the prayers
Yet the lamentation continues
There is no end to it
2. Without asking before acting
Complaining after the deed
Saying, “How could you forsake”
It avails nothing
3. Without seeking God even a little
Without heeding the words of men
How many times have we ignored
What our own intellect advised
4. Following the whims of the mind
Doing what seemed right to us
Getting entangled after the act
What use is it to blame God
5. We did not halt while acting
Did not listen when correcting
How many times have we complained
Saying, “What kind of God is this”
6. Listening to our own words
Repeating the same daily
Where is the God
Who abides and acts as we desire
7. No matter what we have done
No matter how many temples we built
The God who dances to our whims
Has never been with us
8. No need to read the Vedas
No need to even pray
Just cease the endless lamenting
And pondering will reveal the answer
Hyderabad, 1-3-2024, Morning, 10.30
BT Song 1585
After another trip to the North and South, I returned to the ashram, where I feel at home. Though I never give importance to any place, the life as a recluse gives more opportunities to have that exclusive relationship with God without others’ interference. Reflecting on my various talks with various people, mostly bhaktas but also others, helped me understand that understanding God is possible only through our relationship with Him, and no other means are helpful—at least for me. Celebrating that relationship, I wrote this song that helps me each day to understand God.
BT Song 1585 “I Reached Easily”
Simple English
1. Is knowing you
So easy
Is reaching you
So easy
2. A mind that doesn’t
Understand itself
Is there a way
To understand you
3. While I search
And wander
While reading
The scriptures daily
4. Without you
Searching and coming to me
How much have I understood
Tell me
5. Though I understand
The mind speaks
The intellect denies
And argues
6. What the mind understands
The intellect doesn’t grasp
There are no answers
For the intellect’s questions
7. Beyond both
To know you
The soul is still
Not matured
8. But one thing
I understand
Your relationship
Is clear to me
9. Living with
The understood relationship
The more I live
The more I understand
10. Living with you
Like that
As a relationship
I understood you
11. After this understanding
What more is there
To know
12. So the intellect
The mind and the soul
Continue
Their effort
13. I alone in your
Relationship live
Knowing you
I reached easily

So easy
Is reaching thee
So easy
2. A mind that knoweth not
Itself
Is there a way
To understand thee
3. Whilst I seek
And wander

Pray tell
5. Though I comprehend
The mind doth speak
The intellect denieth
And argueth
6. What the mind doth grasp
The intellect cannot
There are no answers
For the intellect’s queries
7. Beyond both
To know thee
The soul is still
Not matured
8. Yet one thing
I understand
Thy relationship
Is clear to me
9. Living with
The understood relationship
The more I live
The more I comprehend

BT Song 1581 “நம்பிக்கை”
1. ஊன்றக் கூட
கோலும் இன்றி
முடங்கிக் கிடக்கும்
கிழவன் போல
2. நிமிர்ந்து நின்று
துணிந்து நடக்க
பக்தி இன்றி
நானும் வாழ
3. தூக்கி நிறுத்தி
கோலும் தந்து
மீண்டும் நடக்க
பழக்கி என்னை
4. மீண்டும் நானும்
வீழ்ந்திடாமல்
கண்ணை என்மேல்
வைத்து நீயும்
5. நானே நடக்க
என்னை விட்டு
மீண்டும் நீயும்
ஒதுங்கிக் கொள்ள
6. அடியின் மேலே
அடி எடுத்து
அஞ்சி அஞ்சி
நானும் நடக்க
7. எங்கு நீயும்
உள்ளாய் என்று
சுற்றும் முற்றும்
நானும் பார்க்க
8. காட்சி ஏதும்
கண்டிடாமல்
மனதும் கூட
உணர்ந்திடாமல்
9. முடங்கி மீண்டும்
கிடந்திடாமல்
பக்தி என்னும்
கோலை ஊன்றி
10. நம்பிக்கையின்
கையைப் பற்றி
நடக்கிறேன் நான்
மீண்டும் வாழ்வில்

BT Song 1582 “அவசியம் ஏது”
1. எதற்காக நீயும்
என்னுடன் பேசணும்
எதற்காக நீயும்
காட்சியும் தரணும்
2. இருக்கிறேன் என்று
எனக்கு உணர்த்த
இன்னும் எத்தனை
எனக்குச் செய்யணும்
3. பேசாமல் பேச
பலமுறை கேட்டேன்
காணா தரிசனம்
அனுதினம் பார்த்தேன்

BT Song 1585 “எளிதில் அடைந்தேன்”
1. உன்னை அறிவது
அத்தனை எளிதா
உன்னை அடைவது
அத்தனை எளிதா
2. தன்னை உணரா
தவிக்கும் மனது
உன்னைப் புரிய
வழியும் உளதா
3. நானே தேடி
அலையும் போதும்
நாளும் மறைகள்
படிக்கும் போதும்
4. நீயே என்னைத்
தேடி வராமல்
நானே புரிந்தது
எத்தனை சொல்லு
5. புரிந்தது என்றும்
மனதும் சொல்ல
புத்தி மறுத்து
வாதம் செய்ய
6. மனதுக்கு புரிவது
புத்தியேன் புரியல
புத்தியின் கேள்விக்கு
விடையேன் இல்ல
7. இரண்டையும் மீறி
உன்னை அறிய
ஆன்மா இன்னும்
பக்குவப்படல
8. ஆனால் ஒன்று
புரியுது எனக்கு
அதுஉன் உறவு
தெரியும் எனக்கு
9. புரிந்த உறவுடன்
வாழ்ந்து கொண்டு
வாழவாழ
புரிந்துகொண்டு
10. அதுபோல் உன்னுடன்
வாழ்வதினாலே
உறவாய் உன்னை
புரிந்து கொண்டேன்
11. இந்த புரிதல்
வந்த பின்னாலே
மேலும் அறியத்
தேவை என்ன
12. ஆகவே புத்தி
மனதுடன் ஆன்மா
தமது முயற்சியை
தொடர்ந்து செய்ய
13. நான்மட்டும் உனது
உறவில் வாழ்ந்து
உன்னை அறிந்து
எளிதில் அடைந்தேன்
