BT Song 1586
Often I feel that both God and I play the game of hide and seek. Even though we both know where we are hiding and give each other hints to find, we still enjoy this game. I stand before Him while simultaneously hiding from Him. Knowing my play, He also remains calm, pretending not to notice that I am before Him, yet not searching for me. This reminds me of the Isa Upanishad’s mantra, which in one way portrays [Lot’s famous statement] ‘the transcendental immanence of God’:
तदेजति तन्नैजति तद्दूरे तद्वन्तिके।
तदन्तरस्य सर्वस्य तदु सर्वस्यास्य बाह्यतः॥5॥
“It moves, It moves not. It is far, and It is near. It is within all this, and It is outside of all this.”—Isa Upanishad, 5
BT Song 1586: Why are you not search?
Simple English
1. How many things do I say
To deceive you?
How many times
Do I hide the truth?
2. Yet you act
As if you know nothing,
That’s your greatness,
Isn’t it?
3. Even when you pretend
Not to see me,
I know it well,
Still…
4. To avoid showing you,
What all do I do?
That’s my state
Right now.
5. In this game
We both play,
In the end,
We both win.
6. Why do you pretend
As if hidden from sight?
It’s futile,
Isn’t it?
7. Even if you hide,
I’ll find you
With a little effort,
Show yourself.
8. Wherever I hide,
You still search for me,
Though you know
It’s futile.
9. If we both don’t
Intend to hide
Permanently,
Then why this game?
10. Why do we often
Play this game?
To see
What happens?
11. Even though I often
Hide from you,
You too
Hide from me.
12. As if not seeing,
You avoid looking for me,
Why is that?
13. If forgotten, you search,
If searched, you hide,
How long
Will this game go on?
14. If found, you hide,
If hidden, you are found,
What’s the name
Of this game?
15. Even though I say
Many things,
I can’t deceive you,
Can I?
16. In front of you,
I stand hidden,
Why then
Don’t you search for me?
BT Song 1586: Why are you not search?
Classical English
1. What countless things I say
To beguile thee,
How many times
Do I conceal the truth?
2. Yet thou dost act
As if ignorant of all,
That’s thy nobility,
Is it not?
3. Even when thou feignest
Not to see me,
I know it well,
Yet still…
4. To avoid revealing to thee,
What all do I do?
Such is my condition
At present.
5. In this sport
We both partake,
In the end,
We both emerge victorious.
6. Why dost thou feign
As if hidden from sight?
‘Tis vain,
Is it not?
7. Though thou dost hide,
I shall find thee
With some effort,
Reveal thyself.
8. Wherever I hide,
Thou still dost seek me,
Though knowing
‘Tis vain.
9. If we both
Intend not to hide
Permanently,
Then wherefore this sport?
10. Why dost we often
Play this sport?
To behold
What transpires?
11. Though I often
Hide from thee,
Thou too
Dost hide from me.
12. As if unseen,
Thou dost avoid seeking me,
Why so?
13. If forgotten, thou seekest,
If sought, thou hidest,
How long
Shall this sport endure?
14. If found, thou hidest,
If hidden, thou art found,
What is the name
Of this sport?
15. Though I utter
Many words,
I cannot deceive thee,
Can I?
16. In thy presence,
I stand concealed,
Why then
Dost thou not seek me?

BT Song 1587
The Lord’s sacrifice for us as Prayaschitta is not mere philosophy or something that can be communicated through theology. It is demonstrated in that while we were yet sinners, He died for us. Only those who experience their wretchedness can comprehend this great mystery, as everyone is ready to do something for good and noble people, but never to rescue and restore a culprit. Here, what the Lord has done stands unique.
BT Song 1587 Noble Sacrifice
Simple English
1. Whether it’s a sacrifice or an offering
You did it with your body
That’s the truth.
2. A thousand philosophies
Everyone can discuss
They can reason
And argue with intellect.
3. Yet, to pay the price
And give themselves
Such people
Are very rare.
4. Even if a few
Give themselves
The reason for it
Won’t be like yours.
5. For the good to live
Some will die
For others to live
They will give themselves.
6. To destroy the evil
Some will come
Giving themselves
They will end it.
7. To save the sinner
And then protect them
Who will come
And give themselves?
8. There lies the greatness
Of your sacrifice
It’s truly different
That’s the truth.
9. Those who say
This is mere philosophy
Let them think
How to accept it.
10. Yet those who feel it
In their spirit
Will daily remember
Your sacrifice.

BT Song 1588
As we gradually understand our relationship with others, God also helps us to understand our relationship or bhakti with Him step by step. In this, He uses His entire creation—most of all nature—to help us realize His glory and majesty. But when we return to our human realm, we revert to our inherent human nature. Then, as there is no other means, God comes down to our level as a human to help us understand that relationship despite our weaknesses. We regain that lost relationship through our bhakti, as we celebrate our relationship with Him each day.
BT Song 1588 Understanding Through Relationship
Simple English
When I didn’t understand
You came to make me understand
You came to me
To help me understand 1
Even when I refused
To understand you
You showed more compassion
Towards me 2
First, you made me understand
What it means to understand
By helping me understand
Myself first 3
After a bit of clarity
You showed and made me understand
What I needed to see
Clearly 4
Step by step
You helped me understand
Giving me the knowledge
Bit by bit 5
You gave me visions
In my soul
To understand with
My mind and heart 6
As those visions
Became clearer
I saw you
In your creation 7
I saw your rule
Spreading everywhere in nature
And I heard
About your glory 8
I heard from all the creatures
Living in it
About your greatness
And majesty 9
Then I saw mankind
Whom you created
To rule them
And myself too 10
Everything I had known
And understood disappeared
I realized the truth
About our condition 11
That’s why
You sought us
And came to find us
Looking for us 12
You came as a human
To save us
And protect us
Completely 13
To help me remember
The forgotten you
You gave me the scriptures
And made me understand 14
Yet even with my intellect
I couldn’t comprehend
And came back to you
Once again 15
With compassion
You stood as my friend
And made me understand
You completely 16
After that understanding
I lived in the relationship
With you and
Understood you fully 17

BT Song 1588 Comprehending Through Relationship
Classical English
When I was in ignorance
And understanding eluded me
You came to me
To grant me comprehension 1
Even as I resisted
The knowledge of you
You showed great compassion
And did not withdraw 2
First, you instilled in me
The essence of understanding
By allowing me to grasp
The knowledge of myself 3
After some clarity dawned
You revealed more,
Guiding me to perceive
With increased lucidity 4
Bit by bit,
You imparted wisdom
Helping me discern
With careful instruction 5
You bestowed visions
Upon my soul
That my heart and mind
Might grasp the truth 6
As these visions
Unfolded before me
I beheld you
Within your creation 7
Your sovereignty
I observed
Spread across
All of nature 8
From all the creatures
Dwelling therein
I heard tales
Of your majesty 9
Then I beheld mankind
Created to govern them
And reflected upon
My own existence 10
All previous understanding
Vanished, and
The truth of our state
Became evident to me 11
Thus, you sought us out
And came to find us
Persistently searching
For our souls 12
Incarnating as a human
You came to save
And protect us
Eternally 13
To remind me of you
When I had forgotten
You gave me the scriptures
And granted understanding 14
Yet even then,
With all my intellect
I failed to comprehend
And returned to you 15
With boundless compassion
You stood as my friend
Granting me full understanding
Of your essence 16
After attaining this comprehension
I lived in communion with you
And fully grasped
Your divine nature 17

BT Song 1589
Modern gadgets help me understand our communication with the Lord through prayers. Though we use human symbols to express our understanding about God having eyes to see and ears to listen, this is our own imagination. But still, we talk to Him, knowing well that He listens and with the assurance that He keeps an eye on us. When mobile phones first came out, I didn’t know that one could keep a wireless earplug and listen even while keeping the mobile in their pocket. I used to show my mother young people walking and talking, even laughing, thinking they had psychological problems because they seemed to talk and laugh without anyone around them. Later, I learned about wireless headphones. Then, I easily related my prayer with the Lord, as I saw tangible evidence for that. As I often do this, I now understand my sadhana of prayer better.
BT Song 1589: Don’t know how to pray
Simple English
1. I come unable
To stay away
I must tell you
Something.
2. Not knowing how to ask,
A fool am I,
What else can I do,
Beyond this?
3. I don’t understand feelings,
Emotions are unclear,
No change
In my body.
4. Like a stone
Thrown into a well,
I stood silently
Before you.
5. I come to speak,
But I can’t,
Searching for words,
I find none.
6. So I babble
Like a madman,
Hoping it reaches
Your ears.
7. With eyes and ears,
Mouth and nose,
Yet without
The five senses.
8. How do you hear,
I wonder,
I surely
Don’t understand.
9. Yet, why do I
Feel like speaking,
The reason for it
I don’t know.
10. This is my
Current state,
You too know
This truth.
11. As long as
This understanding remains,
I’ll do the same,
Again and again.
12. Thus will come
Peace and strength,
That’s enough,
What more is needed?

BT Song 1590
In our childhood, we used to do what is commonly known as ‘Kavidaradhu’—estranging from a friend and refusing to talk to him for some time. We both longed to talk with each other, but the question was who would break the silence. Then, using some pretense, one of us would break the silence. When others asked about it, we would say, ‘pazham vittaachu,’ meaning we had reconciled. In Tamil, ‘kai’ means unripened fruit, and ‘pazham’ means ‘fruit.’ Often, both the Lord and I do this several times in our relationship, and this is one such occasion.

BT Song 1590: Are you a guest?
Simple English
1. Are you a guest?
For me to call you to come?
If uninvited, you come,
Are you my kin?
2. Decide this first,
Then we can talk,
Further on
Anything else.
3. Like a third person,
You stand afar,
Is this right?
4. When living
As family,
Even understanding,
Standing apart, is it right?
5. Why should I
Tell you this?
Don’t you have
A share of the responsibility?
6. In relationships,
Small cracks
Often appear,
This is certain truth.
7. For that, every day,
Saying something,
Why do you
Argue like this?
8. Quarreling,
Then reuniting,
Is this our
New relationship?
9. If you remain
Without responding,
Is what you do
Completely right?
10. Unnecessary arguments,
How many do you make?
Useless questions,
How many do you ask?
11. For all that,
I have to answer,
While you remain
Silent.
12. If I too
Once remain silent,
You will understand
Then.
13. I’ll let this go,
Just this once,
If it happens again,
I’ll show my true self.
